The 14'' blueberry pancake- doesn't look as big here as it is
    Ashley H.

This place was fun! Tiny little spot. The owner/waitress was a hoot, friendly and helpful. We had the famous 14'' blueberry pancake and all three of us could only eat half but the leftovers were delicious the space is eclectic with decorations for every season and holiday but I enjoyed it the breakfast plates we got were all yummy- everyone enjoyed their eggs in their different styles and the toast was yummy. We enjoyed the local maple syrup from a nearby farm- my friend bought some to go which was really reasonably priced. Would eat here again if stopping through Bennington.

The "giant pancake" post-hour long wait.

Papa Pete's was disappointing. When we arrived (10 am on a Saturday) they told us food would be a 30 minute wait, which was fine so we took a table. We ordered coffee (which tasted like Folger's, it was mediocre) and water. We placed an order for 3 eggs, hash browns, and white toast along with a giant banana pancake. We were told the giant pancake would take 20 extra minutes. I said that was fine and said we could take the dishes as they were ready, the waitress said "that's not how we do things here, they all come out together." We waited for 45 minutes and received the smaller items, and the waitress said the pancake was getting put on the grill now so it would be another 20 minutes, even though she had told us everything would come out together. The smaller items were fine, but unseasoned. The giant pancake came out after 1 hour total and it was fine, but it could have had more bananas. One small container of maple syrup was provided for the pancake and extra small containers are $2 each, so use sparingly.

    Stuffed French toast with blueberries

Food amazing, along with the portion sizes! My husband had the giant pancake and I had the stuffed French toast with fresh blueberries!!! Owner is amazing she makes it a place to be in. Service was great and lots of laughs. Ambiance is down home and great. If you're easily offended you may not want to stop. This place reminds me of a big family! We will be back again and again. We also were able to park our 5th whee and truck no problem

Best staff ever. It's like a comedy show and best big breakfast for an entertaining and relaxing start to the day. Come to laugh and roll with the punches. Enjoy a "Vermosa" or two and make sure you tell the Bitch how wonderful she is. She is awesome and deserves it. Seriously, Kathy, you made our visit memorable and we thank you!

    Poached eggs

I thought I reviewed this place before but apparently not. We stopped on the way back to NY from a ski trip to Okemo. It was a Sunday morning and the crowd was pretty light but that filled in a bit while we ate. From the street this place doesn't look very special and the interior decor is a bit outdated but the food was exactly what we were looking for. The menu isn't as big as many comparable diners but the offerings vary enough to keep everyone satisfied. Items from burgers to pancakes to reubens to a variety of egg based breakfasts. I had the philly cheese omelet and my wife had Poached eggs. Our son had a pbj which he devoured. The breakfast potatoes were excellent and the horse sauce on the side of my philly was a nice touch. Omelet was good and packed with meet and peppers. Poached eggs were cooked good as well. Food came quick but they had one waitress in duty who was super friendly but she was stretched thin. So while the food was on the good side of fair and pricing Very good, the one waitress won me over with her table side manner. She gets 5 Stars. Spoiler alert: no reflection on the food but the next sentence may spoil your appetite. Our four year old was very tired from a long weekend and choking a bit from his allergies. He choked so much that he vomited at the table a bit (before eating his entire sandwich) Without missing a beat, the waitress brought napkins and towels to help clean him up. He didn't make much of a mess but she made him and us all feel comfortable with the mishap. We found out she was a mother and school teacher so it made sense. I don't wish this on any of the future diners but I just needed to mention bc so many servers could have made a big deal, shamed or ignored what happened and this women stepped up. Thank you to her and we will definitely be back when he's feeling a bit better. As noted above, he proceeded to eat his entire meal after that and her service was a big part in that.

Everything is really fresh, and made to order. The fish is freshly battered (so are the shrimp), and the portions are great. I also recommend the burgers, they are not anything crazy gourmet, but they are fresh, and for only a little more than the place with the arches down the road, you get something that you know is real, freshly prepared, and on an amazing bun. The chicken tenders are the only thing that's just kinda OK, but only because they don't make them in-house. They work for a picky kid, but otherwise stick with the other stuff on the menu. I haven't tried the pies, but they are freshly made there too. There is also a little assortment of British food and candy there, which might be something a little fun that you don't normally find here. Not a great spot to bring a big group, but very worth stopping in if you want a quick bite while you are passing through downtown Bennington.

Most of it was stringy, they offered only potatoes as a side, and "whatever the chef decides on a particular day." My husband's filet mignon was overcooked and dry, his potatoes lukewarm, and scallops overcooked. He told the waitress who offered to take the scallops - not the entire plate. The manager came over to apologize and asked my husband if he'd like to try anything else but he was too disappointed and lost his appetite. He explained that we were celebrating our anniversary but the woman didn't care to acknowledge it. After all that, the waitress returned and asked if we wanted to see the dessert menu without apologizing about our meal. Very unprofessional. We declined, paid the check, and left the bare minimum tip, which we never do. We don't blame the waitress for the food, but for her service technique and disinterest in her patrons' needs. Oh, they didn't charge us for my husband's meal but lacked the courtesy to tell us in person. Needless to say, despite the charming atmosphere, excellent salad bar, and incredible appetizers, we will not return. Maybe the chef had an off night, but what excuse did the staff have?

I ended up leaving angry and literally cried.... Their online ordering has a Reuben with an option for $2 extra meat & a note box so I cld have written there asking for the extra portion on the side. EASY. Yet, I went in person to see what the specials were hoping for a great lunch, because Im here for medical procedures at the hospital and had fasted since the day before. Id never been to The Elm Street Market before, but it was close to the hospital, & love Vermont markets for all the years I have lived here. But THIS place :: T E R R I B L E mistake! The employee at the counter was as fake & uncaring as it gets, & shld definitely not be the customer guy. He would not just let the added side be $2 , but wanted to weigh it out & charge me for a deli style $6 sliced side in a package as an addition to the $14 sandwich. ($20 Reuben?!) I said I didn't need or expect a package of sliced cold meat, that I was just adding the side portion to share with my pups. For Lunch. He just becomes patronizing, dense, & fully lacking capacity or willingness to help and says he "can't bc it just doesn't work that way" unless I get it on the sandwich. I cld order it online but not with him at register. And for some reason he cant figure out a $2 portion of meat. Surreal Incompetence. The next level of downhill not-so-fun is seeing the tiny soup. A cup of soup for $8. A latte "special" that I cld not even taste the smoked maple flavor and was only 3/4 full. It's actually shocking- what happened to actually CARING about just helping ppl have a good experience if you are working in the restaurant business as a small local independent market? Hey Elm Street Market Fella, you cld do the simplest things like not try ripping ppl off & being kind! His patronizing attitude & lack of capacity really took it over the top- how am I supposed to enjoy this $36 ordeal? Supposedly he is refunding the meat, bc I explained I didn't order a package of meat. He took it out of bag & literally said "take your sandwich & drink & go". I was upset~ I said this is truly unacceptable ~ try some Kindness & Authenticity! And left. The other young lady who was working that day & witnessed this whole debacle seemed to feel bad making 'Im So Sorry' faces. She at least offered me a dollop of maple syrup & noted the drink was not filled~ but also was being oppressed by his attitude. I cld tell he was being an overbearing tyrant. Wtf - this is NOT Vermont as it should be DUDE. All it took was putting a few slices on the side for $2 & filling up a drink. Ridiculous.
