We popped into Franklin Square market on the way to happy hour at Chianti. Without great…read moreexpectations, we figured we would check out the little market that used to be a "mini" Market 32. When we entered the building, it was the quaintest, little urban shop--a counter with prepared foods on the left and a trendy restaurant entrance on the right. The market in the middle was full of curated items intended to capture customers. From fancy jarred items to unique serving tools, there was a curiosity around every corner. When we looked over the divider to the bar area, we were captivated. They advertised a happy hour that included six dollar drafts and sangrias. So, we figured we would give it a try. My husband ordered a Peroni, and I ordered one of the three specialty sangrias--the garden sangria. Since the happy hour appetizer offerings didn't interest us much, we opted to order Kalamata Polenta Frites off the regular menu. When the sangria arrived, it was garnished beautifully. The muddled fruit was an intriguing addition to the semi-sweet wine concoction--truly garden variety. While my husband's Peroni was pretty straightforward, the polenta frites knocked our socks off. They were piping hot. They were incredibly crispy. They were creamy and flavorful in the center and accompanied by a complementary dipping sauce. An item we have never experienced before in our pretty diverse travels. Needless to say, we never made it to Chianti.

Everyone that works there are friendly and love to chat with you. I ended up getting the lake sandwich, tiramisu, a cake pop (huge), and rainbow cookies which were awesome. Lake sandwich was turkey, provolone, arugula, cranberry mayo, and bacon. I would have added onions but that's my fault. (They offer coleslaw on it but I skipped that). The bread is what made the sandwich. Seeded and crunchy yet soft. So delicious! Been looking for a sandwich like this for a while!

Made the best Chimichurri tacos on the grill tonight courtesy of Fresh Markets meat counter and their amazing marinade!! So glad the gentlemen at the meat counter were so prompt and helpful while I was making my selections. I will definitely return for the meat counter. It was my husbands birthday, so I also grabbed a cake and some desserts for the fam -- the cakes are about what you would pay at Price Chopper, but in my opinion, they appear to be made with more attention to detail. If you're having a hard time finding birthday candles with numbers, they have a huge selection next to the cake counter and some Birthday cake pieces as well. The way to shop at this store is by learning the regular sale days. Tuesdays deals are: $5.00 12 inch pizza $3.99/lb Chicken Breast $5.99/lb ground beef $5.00 rotisserie chicken Fridays deals are: 2 for $5 burgers Each week they choose a different fresh deal, so you'll likely find a deal for $5.00/lb meat. This evening it was carne asada chicken breast cutlets. Other elements that I really enjoy is that their olive bar has Dolmas!! It's the only one that I know of that carries them in the area. Never realized how difficult it is to find specialty food until I moved back to Saratoga from Texas. Plus, my kiddos love going with me for the candy by the pound jars -- they really love getting to make their own selection and mix. While I do find the market to have steeper prices, I do enjoy the convenience, but I have to shop the deals.

We ate the whole bag in the parking lot. I had to go back and get more to bring home. We went there for apple picking and I have to say their per person bag requirement kind of caught me off guard. I've been to other places where you can buy a bag or as many bags as you want to go pick apples but this one requires every single person to purchase a bag. A peck of apples is $14. So you can imagine if you have a bunch of kids over their age requirement and have to buy a bag for each kid, it's very expensive and you get more apples than you could possibly eat. We go for the experience and usually fill a bushel bag or two. I did not like that. It was the reason why we did not go to Bowman's. They got us anyway. The store was filled with fresh vegetables and apples and all kinds of things you could purchase. Breads, maple syrup, soup mixes. I would come here just to shop! There was a live music, which really set the tone for a beautiful fall day. We bought some cute bucket hats from a vendor out front. The staff was super friendly too!

The farm market is amazing, with excellent produce and local products you'd expect at a market such as jellies, and of course some excellent cider donuts. They work hard to make visiting here a destination, particularly on weekends, with live music for adults and other events, and of course apple picking, mazes and other fun kid-friendly activities. The apple picking itself is a bit hit-and-miss--a lot of spots can be sparse--perhaps a victim of their own success. Not always the best yield here, but then you mostly go for the experience, right?
