On a late winter, almost spring, Sunday we decided to go for a ride to check out this donut place up in Cambridge, NY. A pleasant cruise in the countryside and about 45 minutes later we arrived at this food cart in the driveway. There were only 1 couple ahead of us in line, and this gave us time to look over the menu board to see what they got. Chose about 8 or items and paid for it. People were nice and pleasant. Line started to build up behind us. All the donuts we had were great. Donuts were cold but it's cold outside. Tasted fresh. Filled donuts were filled all the way with tasty fillings. Overall flavors were on point. The one ham and cheese croissant was tasty once we warmed it up in the microwave at home. Really like the pistachios cream donut. Worth the trip. Probably can't do much of this though as I am sure donuts is not good for the diet but donuts do make me happy. read more

THE. BEST. SPONGY. DELICIOUS. DONUT. CART. EVER. Ok so I absolutely love this place. We found out about it through the locals. The owner operates right from her property and makes the most phenomenal yummy spongy fluffy donuts ever. So worth it!!! Absolutely awesome owner and just the best local spot for donuts. Only downside: its almost a 3 hour drive for me. Worth it? Forever! If you're in the area make sure to check them out! Pairs well with a nice cider (argyle brewing right a few steps away). Oh my, this is a must stop, if you are in Cambridge, NY, on a Sunday morning. Extremely friendly family and even though the line might be long it moves pretty quickly. The donut cart is is perfect and brings back that old time feeling. Now, their donuts. The King's make the absolute BEST donuts and pastries in the country. Seriously, you cannot have just one donut. My favorite is their classic glazed donut, their Bismarck is so good too., they are all good lol I do wish they would make their famous donut holes. The apricot pecan scone was sweet and got tastier with every bite. I love pecans and good scones. This is most proper. Cinnamon spice donut most enjoyable and only $1 (so now you know the first couple smaller donuts aren't as expensive). Coffee cream a bit too sweet. Excellent flavor though. Apple fritter solves that one.. Not too sweet, crunchy outside, soft inside, appley. Maple bacon is saturated with maple flavor. Kinda outshines the bacon component. But if it's a choice of maple or maple bacon, is there really a choice? Lemon cream: Pass. Fake lemon, fake color. I'm no longer enamored with these donuts upon discovering this :( What other donuts use what ingredients? Are any of them all natural? Sigh. Chocolate bismarck: Not as chocolatey inside as I hoped, but the chocolate on top helped, except it was falling off when I got to the last donut later in the day. No judgement there. Stopped here because we heard about the hype. Now if you know us you know we love donuts. We were so excited about this place. The cart is adorable and the people were so kind, even waiting in line to get them was fun. We got several donuts. I bit into my first donut and it was a glaze and it immediately told me that the oil needed to be changed. Also it was so so dark, fried too long. My husband said the same thing for the apple fritter as well. The cheese danish, the chocolate croissant and the cinnamon roll were perfect. But everything fried was really disappointing. The world must know about what King Bakery does. Every Sunday and Monday morning, the King family produce astonishingly delicious donuts and baked goods from the bakery/kitchen of their stately home. As soon as trays of these wondrous creations are done, they're walked out to a small, burgundy cart set up right at the roadside where they are sold. The Kings churn out apple fritters, bismarcks, and filled donuts, as well as apple pie bars and other delights. It is a labor of love, and this love is apparent in every bite you take. Something as simple as a glazed donut is bright and flavorful, with a great consistency and a perfect layer of icing. But the more complex items (like those fritters and apple bars) showcase the skill of this baking clan even more - nuanced balances of spices and sweetness, amazing textures, wonderfully fresh ingredients. The locals are quite aware of this little gem, and the lines can stretch ten or fifteen back as the residents of Cambridge, NY know that the Kings will sell out by mid-afternoon. (Ok...caveat...I maybe eat one donut per year...I can't indulge in such sweetness or I wouldn't get out the door...) -Apple fritter: All I can say is....OMG. I'm a slave to anything chocolate normally...and I'm not usually a fan of raisins in my pastries...but this decadent, amazing fritter is a staple for the King's Bakery cart. Now I understand. I've converted. -Cinnamon roll: Outstanding. No other words needed. -Jelly Donut: VERY good (but I'm not a big fan of jelly donuts...I just took a bite of someone else's...). We've been going to Kings Bakery for a while, had seen them, and had wondered about them. This past Sunday, curiosity got the better of us. Barbara asked if we could buy a few of them, and was told "they're only sold by the dozen." Our curiosity whetted, we made the purchase. The extremely kind lady who runs Kings Bakery told us, "One of these, toasted, is my daily breakfast." All I heard as I was reaching for my wallet was that the lady ate one of these in the morning. Thankfully, Barbara listened intently, for it is the toasting that unlocks the secret of the Snowflake Roll. You toast them, and gently spread your choice of butter, preserves, whipped cream cheese, or Boursin Cheese on them. Then, you bite into something so fragrant, so wonderfully crunchy, so light and airy, that you cannot believe that it's a roll. It's something yet entirely other, something that just doesn't have a name. It's simply that indescribably delicious. The "only sold by the dozen" restriction? Anywhere else, you could say that exists for the convenience of the bakery, not the customer. Here, it exists to keep customers happy. I grew up going to the standing bakery and when that closed our town was definitely missing something so imagine our joy when Jana, Skip and Holly decided to start the bakery back up again. Sold only Sunday mornings out of an old Freihoffer cart recommissioned, you can't miss it because the line goes down the street, regardless of the weather. My personal favorite is the Bismarck, light & fluffy donut filled with delicious butter cream frosting followed closely by the cinnamon twist. I am not a donut lover, but will always make an exception for Kings. Donuts that are light and fluffy and made with a long tradition of love. Bismarck, maple glazed with bacon bits on top, apple fritters, and more. It does not matter what you get either way you will be blown away with how good it is. There is a long wait 30 minutes?? We bought an indulgent array of fresh doughnuts, assuring ourselves the opportunity to taste test, compare, and rate them against one another. Mostly we just needed an excuse for excess. It was hard to remain objective as each bite sent us soaring further towards a sugar-saturated paradise. No two doughnuts tasted similar, with subtle but important variations in the dough flavor and consistency, the glaze or frosting, the shape, and the type of filling (if any). This made the taste-testing extravaganza even more interesting. It's safe to say the (six) doughnuts we tried ranged from "A" to "A+" on a conventional grading scale - painstakingly, I arrived at the conclusion that my favorites were the cream-filled Bismarks and the maple-frosted glazed. Saw the line while driving through on a Sunday morning. Turned the car around, parked and got in line. It's a social event besides being good food. The locals in line will tell you what their favorite is, and there may even be a little arguing. But when you get to the wagon, there is nothing that you would not eat. It is all delicious. A twist is light and fluffy, A cream puff, well, it's like one of those textures that's crispy on the outside and melting on the inside. They also sell pies, but I'm thinking you must be one of the first five people in line that morning. They had strawberry-rhubarb and strawberry-rhubarb-apple, but the gentleman in front of us purchased both and they were gone. Obviously we were not in the top five. The cheery woman selling these delectables gave me a stern warning about the twist I was about to purchase..."I have to warn you these are still very, very warm."
