Service: In a nutshell Kruba refuses to address their poor service. Bad and indifferent wait staff is a reflection of management. Repeatedly wait staff will pass by your table noticing that you are still waiting for your order, but will not say a single word, nor return the next time with your order. It isn't until you are finally fed up and complain that miraculously your order materializes from the kitchen. No sincere apology, no compensation on your check. Let me preface the food portion of this review by saying, I enjoy Thai food, I make authentic Thai food at home and have lived in Thailand. Food: I have frequented this place on a number of occasions, and as Thai food goes, it is mostly passable. Nothing in particular stands out about this restaurant as dishes can be very inconsistent. One day a spicy dish can have just the right amount of heat, then next time it will be mild and the next time after that it can be overpowering. The prices outside of the lunch specials are very insulting. $13+ for a plate of noodles is borderline crazy. The same can be said for their fried rice dishes. The food itself is not that bad, but with an overpriced menu and horrible service, something is bound to be acceptable. The dishes that I enjoy the most are Larb Gai and Nom Tok, but then again it is pretty difficult to screw up a salad even though Kruba has managed to do so on the heat of the Nom Tok on more that one occasion. The Sea War is horrible and you can count the pieces of seafood in it on one hand. The peanut sauce with the chicken satay is complete garbage. The spring rolls appear to be mostly spring roll paper leaving you wanting for some substantial filling. The Panang curry is fairly decent and you do get a fairly decent portion. I've tried the sushi and,.... well, first off, cuisine restaurants should do just that, stick within their cuisine. When you start going all over the global food map you end up not do any one thing very well. Kruba exemplifies this concept and as such the sushi is not remarkable. If it were not for the dearth of dining options in and around the immediate ballpark / Department of Transportation area, I could easily see Kruba failing as a restaurant. As a reader you may have noticed that even though I do not particularly care for this restaurant, I have tried many of their offerings. To be fair, I'm always about chances, and in many cases I've been part of a larger luncheon or business meal where the selection of restaurants has not been my choice. Maybe it was the hunger taking over, but I thought this place was excellent! A little pricey for Thai food, $14 for chicken pad thai, but it was delicious. The noodles were cooked just right, a little chewy and lots of flavor. The chicken was not dry and they even had mini tofu bites. We also got the Hawaiian roll. It was my first time having asparagus in my sushi haha. But everything blended together very well. It was a little spicy because of the sauce. I would love to come back to this place and recommend it if it wasn't so expensive. Maybe for a special occasion because the interior is beautiful. So much detail, even down to the check holder. It's a work in progress. There are few issues with this restaurant that need to be addressed - 1. The weird disclaimer on the back of their sushi menu is very unusual and the essence of the message is essentially there is no way you are getting your money back if you dont like what you order of if you eat more than 10% of it. I think that is a bit off putting and Kruba should stand by their product more than having to worry about that situation. 2. Kruba is going to price themselves out of the market. Dinner for two with a sushi app and a shared entree and a beverage each was $160 which is relatively expensive for what the offering is. They can still offer affordable quality without making it a restaurant to go to occassionally. 3. The portions offered are not in line with their high prices. That being said we all know that restaurants serve too much food but if you are going to cut that down in half or more you can't really charge the same thing. 4. Their bar situation needs to be addressed and it needs a lot of work. The issue is not selection but rather they do not have half or more of what they are offering on their menu. If you are printing your menu just drop the items you don't have at the moment, we all expect the menu to expand as the business adjusts. That being said the food was very good and the service was attentive. I certainly hope this one lasts because as all of us have mentioned they are definitely filling a void in the area. I've been waiting ever so patiently for Kruba to open and when it finally did I made a bee-line straight there! Now I've been here on several occasions, way after the lunch rush, and the service was horrible on every occasion. I've literally walked in the restaurant and had to wait for someone to even greet me! Several staff members walked right pass me a few times before I had to stop them and tell them I hadn't even been helped. I order a few rolls to-go and I am told it will only take 15 mins. Mine you there is no one else even in the restaurant. About 35 minutes later I finally ask someone the status of my food and it is brought out, but it had been sitting in the back for some time. I finally just eat there and when I started eating I realize there is wasabi mixed all in the sushi already! I hate spicy food but I can't wait another half hour for it to be fixed. I proceed to tell my hostess about it and she reminds me of the disclosure on the menu and told me "You already eat it". I had to tell her I was just letting them know and I was not requesting a refund. Don't waste your time, or more importantly your money (it's pretty expensive) until they learn to adequately run a business. read more

I had a horrible experience at Kruba Thai and would not recommend eating here. There are far too many better Thai restaurants in this city to waste your time on this one. Here are the reasons why: 1. Long wait for food. I entered the restaurant alone at 11:45, hoping to beat the lunch crowd. Since it was only me I figured it would not take too long to get my food, especially since the restaurant was not crowded. I order from the lunch menu, which comes with Miso soup and a spring roll for the appetizer. I waited, and waited, but no food came. Then at around 12:20 when I had not even received my miso soup and spring roll appetizer I finally asked what the hold up was. I took me another 10 minutes to get my food after I had asked. And when it came out, they brought out the appetizer and the entree all at the same time. By this time is was 12:30. I had waited almost an hour for my food. 2. Food is not that great. The Miso soup was very very salty, but bland at the same time. The spring roll tasted stale, like it had been frozen then defrosted. I ordered Pad See Ew, and it was bland as well. Normally, when I order Pad See Ew it comes with lots of veggies and tastes very fresh. In this case, it came with 4 sad looking broccoli florets, and that was it. I was super disappointed. 3. The service is horrible. At first the server seemed nice enough. She asked for my drink order, and quickly came back with my Thai Iced tea. But after that she did not even come over to ask how I was doing. Remember how I waited 40 minutes to get my food. Yeah, she didn't stop by on her own during that entire time. After about 30 minutes of waiting for my food I had to get the attention of another server to try to find out why I hadn't received my order yet. 4. Small portions. Maybe I've been spoiled by other restaurants, but the portions here are really small in comparison, especially considering their entrees start at almost $13. Overall, I'd say don't waste your time or money. All this place has going for it is the lovely decor on the inside. If you enjoy Thai food, please go someplace else. You will not be impressed with the quality of the food here, and the prices are on the high side. read more

So excited about this new addition to Navy Yard! --Great decor, big place with lots of seating --Service was good (although we were the only ones in the place for most of the time we were there) -- hope it stays good! --Pad thai was excellent: not too saucy or heavy. Vegetable curry was very, very good though not as spicy as we had asked for (note to self: tell waiter you're very seriously about 'very spicy'). A girlfriend and I stopped in to eat here after our reservations at another restaurant fell through. We were immediately in awe of the beautiful decor. The restaurant itself is pretty big, but the decor makes it very warm and inviting. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted by the hostess and seated. The waitress soon came by to take our drink orders and appetizer orders. I got the streamed edamame and my friend ordered some shrimp dish; the name escapes me now. My dish tasted like...well...steamed edamame-pretty hard to mess that up. My friends dish look good. She said it tasted delicious. For the main course, I ordered the Pad Thai Jai. It was very tasty! It came out piping hot and very quickly to boot. FOr the price, I got a lot of food and was able to take some home for lunch the next day. All in all, I had a good dining experience. Although the pricing could be better and the HH menu could be more extensive based on other sushi restaurants in DC. The sushi is very fresh and the drink pack a pretty good punch. As far as the thai food I've only had the beef drunken noodles for which I'm not that big of a fan =(. I've only been twice but I would definitely visit again. If they expanded and lowered their happy hour menu it would definitely be as busy as some of the other restaurants in the area. Food options at the Navy Yard use to be very limited, but they are slowly coming around. One of the first places that opened was Kruba Thai. The atmosphere inside is beautiful. The woodwork is impressive and truly representative of that Thai feel. The prices are a bit much to eat here all the time, but there is a special lunch menu that you have to know about and request if you want it. We frequently walk to the restaurant, order our lunch specials (a half size portion of the food and 2 spring rolls) and head back to the office to eat. I am also happy that they will let you get a Thai Ice Tea to go. This has become my sanity break... because Starbucks is too far. The service has never been an issue. In fact, one day it was incredibly hot and we walked over to Kruba. While we waited for our food order to come up, the host gave us water and told us to drink because of the weather. read more

I was hesitant about checking this place out due to all the reviews in regard to poor service, but I'm glad I gave it a chance! I've been twice now and everything has been delicious. The service was a little slower on a busy Friday night but overall can't complain since I was out with some friends and in no rush. They have a huge dining room and bar inside and plenty of seating outside, too. They have a great happy hour from 4-7 (I think) including drinks and apps/food. Moved to the area recently and have been here about three or four times (and many more to come seeing as there aren't many Asian food options around and I need my comfort food). I was wary of the star rating, but have had great experiences every visit so far! The Thai dishes I've had were overall pretty good. Pad See Ew is my go-to noodle dish -- not too sweet like most places, which I like! The Num Tok is also refreshing. The Tom Yum Goong is the perfect amount of sour (*really* sour!) and authentic. I was extra, extra wary of ordering sushi at a Thai restaurant, but I'm glad I did. It was surprisingly good! The sashimi appetizer is a great portion, the fish fresh and tenderly cut. I've also had the lychee mojito which is tasty (albeit light on alcohol). It surprises me how empty this restaurant typically is (though I'm not complaining because I never have to make reservations). I found the prices to be reasonable for the area and haven't had a problem with service. Love the ambience, too! read more

Who knows what happened, but it's taken a sharp turn for the worse and the quality no longer reflects the high(ish) prices compared to other DC and VA area Thai restaurants. First time patron here. Literally just ate there 20 mins ago. Here is the rundown: If you work on the navy yard or close by, this is one of the better places to grab lunch. Tired of the same old (and unhealthy) fare on the navy yard, I trek-ed down here to grab lunch. They have some sort of $12 Lunch special that looked like a good deal. I was in the mood for sushi and needed a healthy dose of protein so I grabbed 3 rolls. The first one, tuna roll, was meh. Small size with seaweed wrapping on the outside. The fish could have been more fatty however the colorization was good for tuna. The second was a Yellow-tail and Scallion roll. This one was a little better, but still the same small size. The Fish was decent, with the discolored ends on the bottom. Quality could have been better. The onions really made this one pop, and I enjoyed this little roll. The last one was a home run. Its amazing how many sushi joints can jack up something so simple as a Avocado Salmon roll. Here, they do it right. Each piece was about twice the size of the previous rolls. Big pieces of salmon and avocados. The wrap was on the inside, with the rice on the exterior. The flavor was fantastic.... very clean and fresh. I should have just ordered 3 of these. Each of the rolls I had were between $6-7.50. There were some others on the list that were more than double ( Point- Sushi does not have cream cheese or fried or other weird crap that ruins the taste of fresh fish. Go eat a burger if you want that trash). One major gripe was the price of drinks. Unsweetened Tea was $2.50, not that expensive..... But a cup of coffee was $3. Little 5 oz cup of black coffee should be nowhere near $3. That is just ridiculous. All in all, I will go there again. I might try the Thai food on a day when I need the carbs and or cheating. I usually visit on the weekends, and it's always very empty and quiet in here. I hope they do enough business during the week with the workday crowd, because I really like this place and want to see it stick around! It's a very large space and is beautifully decoarated with elaborate carved wood statues, wall art, and embroidered silk. The staff are nice and helpful, and they are especially accomodating with dietary restrictions and answering questions about the ingedients. They have sort of a fusion style menu with sushi, Thai curries, noodle dishes, stir-fry, and a full bar for drinks. The sushi rolls are big, with lots of filling, and the curries are flavorful and spicy. They also bring you the condiment pepper trio to add some spice if you need it. I found the noodle dishes to be a little bland and oily, but was able to spice it up myself. There are a couple TV's at the bar, if you need to keep an eye on any sports while you eat. read more

This place is great! My family went to a Nats game and were looking for a nearby dinner spot afterwards and found Kruba through Yelp. What a find! We were very pleased. The service was friendly and not too fast/not too slow and the decor was really nice. In fact, we all commented on the cool faucets in the bathroom--not just the sinks, which were cool too, but the faucets themselves! I had the garden herb rolls to start, which were pretty standard as far as garden rolls go (I love them). We also had the chicken satay which was also standard. When our entrees arrived though--wow, they were big! My mom and I both had the grilled rainbow trout filled with Thai herbs (lemongrass, ginger, etc.) and a delicious julienned mango/lime/cilantro/green onion dipping sauce. It came with some steamed veggies (broccoli and carrots) and a serving of white rice. The fish itself was delicious--huge and infused with those herbs! My dad had the steamed rockfish and its preparation looked similar to our trout. My brother had some chicken dish--he said he didn't even know what it was called, but it looked tasty. My jasmine tea also came in a pretty mug. I don't know--it was the little things (the little things!) at this restaurant that delighted me so much. Oh yeah, and my big (big!) hunk of fish. Every time we go to this place, it gets better and better with more and more people. My bf and I have been going here for over 8 months and the place has changed for the better. Let's talk about the changes. 1. The food, definitely more flavorful and fresh now. Maybe a new chef? I don't know, but whatever it is, keep on rockin' it Kruba. 2. I ordered the drunken noodles & my friend had the pad Thai-they tasted the exact same! They were both bland, lukewarm, & poor quality. The service was also sub-par. We had a server who barely spoke English, making it very difficult to communicate about the menu, any modifications, etc. Another server kept coming over to translate & the drunken noodles still didn't come out correctly (I wanted to add mushrooms & have them remove another vegetable that I can't remember). We ordered: Pad see ew w. Chicken, fried rice with chicken, drunken noodles with chicken, Thai green curry with tofu, and a duck dish. It was weird because they charged dinner prices for lunch due to the fact that it was Labor Day. They forgot to add the chicken to our 2 orders of drunken noodles (a travesty).. and we paid that extra charge for chicken/dinner prices! And the flavor of each dish was very similar. There was no basil in the drunken noodles ?!! There was an interesting dark flavor, if I could describe it that way, more Malaysian than Thai. Usually green curry is a bit more thin and extremely flavorful but this was super thick and just salty. A lot more I could say but will stop here. Service wasn't super friendly and the prices were about average for the Navy Yard area (which is to say moderately overpriced). Came here for carry out yesterday evening because my friends and I were going to Rockin on the Riverfront. The event's website suggested getting sushi or Thai food from this place so we obliged. First impressions: The place was nicely decorated, with wooden carvings throughout the restaurant. The inside was a little empty, but most diners were eating outside because the weather was gorgeous. The prices on the sushi were way more than most of my friends wanted to pay (California roll at $6.50, and when I live 5 minutes way from Yoyogi's in Gaithersburg, I really was hesitant in paying that much for a Cali roll or anything else). I ordered the Pad See Ew with chicken ($13.95) and my other friends ordered the Pad See Ew with pork, Drunken Noodles, Pad Thai (vegetarian) and a combo of yellowtail, tuna, and some other sushi roll. It took us over 20 minutes to get our food. A friend had to ask the hostess how much longer our food was going to take, and she had to ask 3 times for the hostess to fully understand. Food impressions: it simply sucked. My Pad See Ew was slightly watery on the bottom. The chicken was dry. The friend who ordered the sushi rolls claimed it was the worse sushi he's ever had. The pieces looked small and he wasn't even sure if what he was eating was yellowtail. The friend who ordered the Drunken Noodles was super disappointed with the lack of heat (spiciness) especially since 1) he was white (he told me write it to make this clear), and 2) Drunken Noodles supposedly was the spiciest thing on the menu with 3 pepper icons. TL;DR: Service was slow, food was mediocre, pricing is way too expensive for the quality of food. read more

A few friends and I gave this a go after good reviews from trusted friends. I will never grow sick of Thai food and this place did not disappoint. The inside of the restaurant is unique and they gave the traditional Thai food a different spin. I had Thai ice tea (best I've had in DC) and green curry. The kai tom gai soup is amazing. The only thing I was disappointed by was the sticky rice and mango at the end for dessert. They used black rice and it was not as good as other places. Still worth a try! read more

We stopped into Kruba and got a bunch of sushi and Thai food. It was nice to have options. Kruba is a huge restaurant located in Navy Yard. We came in on a cold Friday evening and there weren't many people inside, but there was a steady flow of guests. However, we were able to get seated right away. We immediately ordered sushi and drinks. Both were pretty good, but not the best I've ever had. They were actually out of several items we ordered. We then ordered soups and split a curry dish. The soup was fine. I got hot and sour soup and my wife ended up with miso. The highlight were some delicious mushrooms that were in the soup. The curry was good, again nothing super special but it hit the spot. So all in all, the food was good, not great, so I can't give them 5-stars. However it was convenient and super fast to get seated. There were clearly a lot of regulars in the restaurant as well, as evidence of the fact that this place has solid food. I don't know if this would be a destination restaurant for us, but it was great for the odd night where we could stick close to home in the Navy Yard and enjoy some sushi and Thai! I guess I should warn that parking can be a hassle in this area. Plan on walking a couple blocks and you will be fine. read more

I absolutely love this place. The food is great, and they are very friendly. I threw a dinner party for new years and ordered a giant order of Pad Thai and Pineapple fried rice and it was a huge hit. I probably order from them on a weekly basis. My only two complaints are that 1) They still do not have a website. Or at least an on-line menu. I'm praying to high heaven that they eventually get on-line ordering, this related to my next point 2) They need to hire someone who speaks fluent english or fluent enough english to take a phone order. Really wanted to love this place. I work at the ballpark, so the fact that they opened a sushi place THAT DELIVERED nearby made me happy. Working late on a non-game night, my boss and I decided to give it a shot. I got two sushi rolls, she got chicken fried rice. Kept it standard so that we could get a feel for the place. Food: Meh. Fried rice was OK, but not worth the price - even by DC standards. Pretty bland. The sushi was on par with what you might get at a supermarket. I think it was the sushi rice that was poorly made, and the fish didn't wow. Delivery: Given our food choices and that we are less than a five minute drive away, and it really wasn't peak hours, I was shocked when I was told it would be at least an hour. Additionally, we asked for extra soy sauce, which they either forgot or ration. I'm pretty surprised how highly this place is rated on yelp. Maybe our food would have been better if we had eaten in or picked up, but we thought it was average at best, and very overpriced for the (lack of) quality we got. We decided to grab a late lunch at Kruba after ice skating at Canal Park. As soon as we stepped inside we were blown away by the decor! I'd seen a few interior photos online, but they don't convey the gorgeous wood carvings that are EVERYWHERE. It's a feast for the eyes, if you appreciate that sort of thing. Even the details are special; there are the bamboo chopstick holders, the carved wood menu covers, the rustic pottery that the food is brought out on. Even the check comes out in a little handpainted box. There's also a ton of natural light coming in from the windows that cover two sides of the restaurant. The food was above average but the portions were a little small for the prices. We shared a Rainbow Roll, which was delicious but thinner than we're used to, and a shrimp Pad Thai. The Pad Thai was pretty good (not too oily and it had a lot of shrimp) but I thought it was on the small side. It came in a fried noodle bowl, which was cute, but I would have preferred more noodles and vegetables. The service was impeccable, with the arrival or drinks and food perfectly timed. That said, we were there at an odd time of day with only one other table occupied, so they had plenty of waitstaff available to take care of us. Despite the some what high prices I'd definitely come back. It's the best Thai I've had in the Eastern quadrants of DC, and the ambiance is so completely wonderful. read more
