Their snack, cracker, and chip brands are better than Nabisco, Frito-lay and Keebler in my estimation. The Winking Owl wine is under $3!! And packing your own groceries? Yes please! I usually stand at the end of the conveyor belt and watch in horror as some nitwit packer puts a crate of clementines on top of my bread. It's happened! Or some store clerks put one item in each bag?! Who trained these folks? So, I enjoy packing things my way! And I do like bringing my reusable cloth or plastic bags, they hold so much more that those thin cheap plastics ones at most stores. The cashiers are lightning fast and checkout is a breeze! When I took the plastic wrap off of my container, I could smell that the food was old. It's that scent of warmer lights and old oil. I still took a bite and the chicken was indeed old. The wedges were old as well. They were hard and chewy on the outside. The cornbread was as hard as a brick. I didn't even bother to open the package. My son and his dad enjoyed their food. They got subs and chicken strips. Publix usually doesn't have nasty food. I probably just caught them on a bad day. I will still go back.

Recently, I visited Richmond to care for a friend while she recovered from surgery. Her comfort food? Ukrops orange salad. She sent me to the local Food Lion to get it. I am not sure why it is called salad, as it is really orange jello with pineapple bits. Yet there it was, nestled amongst the potato salad and egg salad, next to the rotisserie chicken. It was enjoyed that same evening and my patient sank back onto the pillows, the post-surgery pain a little more bearable.

This Food Lion outlet near the intersection of Patterson and Lauderdale in westernmost Henrico Country is immaculately clean and organized. It's staff is attentive and helpful--sure signs of strong customer-driven management and an ethos that works. There are at least a half dozen supermarkets nearer to my home. It's because of my experience every time that I drive right past them to buy my groceries here. My highest endorsement.
