I used to consider this a great place to grab a quick something--maybe an unusual beverage, maybe a Virginia-made ice cream, or maybe just something needed around the house. In short, it was a nice place for lots of unique or convenient goods. Unfortunately, I'll be crossing Shield's Market off the list, as they will not return products that were opened before being sold, decline to stand by their own policies concerning refunds, and steal from customers by accepting return of a products with the promise of an upcoming refund and then refusing to issue a refund. The short version of how I found this out started when I purchased of a bottle of vermouth and was not offered a receipt. The manager told me on a phone call that the store policy is to accept returns without a receipt for defective products returned within 24 hours of purchase, which should have meant that a receipt was not necessary. But the same manager nonetheless refused to refund my money even though they did take the product back. The longer version involves two additional trips to the store after the initial trip when I purchased the bottle (totaling three visits in as many days), assurance by the store's cashiers that a manager would be able to issue a refund (which is why I made the second additional trip during a time when a manager would be present), the store taking the bottle back on the promise that a refund would be issued (apparently I had bought the last bottle, otherwise I would have simply exchanged it), and then a stunning phone call from the manager (who had been too tied up with phone calls to speak to me when I visited the store while she was there). That phone call was stunning because the manager both advised me of the policy of issuing refunds (even without receipt) when a defective item is returned within 24 hours, yet then (when I reminded her that I had, in fact, attempted to return the product within 24 hours) refused to act on that very policy. It's worth noting that it was abundantly clear that the product's damage--what appeared to be a clean cut around 90% or so of the seal, so not exactly something one immediately notices when just trying to make a quick purchase--had occurred before I purchased it. No one else had touched the bottle after I purchased it and it hadn't been jostled or exposed to any unusual environmental elements. My credit card company recently completed its investigation of this matter and found in my favor, refunding the payment. Shield's Market apparently did not dispute the information I provided to the credit card company, despite a lengthy window in which it could have done so. Normally, if the return policy of a business seems irrational or simply customer-adverse, I would mention that in a review and, if it's a particularly obnoxious policy, would dock a star or two. However, that is not the case here. Shield's does have a reasonable return policy in theory, the problem is bigger--they simply refuse to abide by their own, stated policy. I can therefore only conclude that it is not a reputable nor even ethical business and have rated it accordingly. I recommend avoiding this business. read more

Super cool market with a great selection of freshly made meals, snacks and desserts. There is also a great variety of wine, beer, cheese, chocolates, and kombucha. You can find almost everything here including coffee, gift cards, and healthy beverages. The staff is so friendly and helpful! I'll definitely stop by here again! read more

Great local mini supermarket in the fan! This place has literally everything you can think of from fresh fruits and veggies- all the way to sunscreen for the summer! They also have great coffee, pastries, sandwiches, most from all local companies!! Today I came here to try C & C's cinnamon rolls. I've been wanting to try these because this company only works out of a home I believe and Shields market carries these! The cinnamon roll was great! You could definitely tell it was baked from scratch and the light cream cheese frosting was on point! They also serve beer and wine. This cute little mini mart has everything you need in case you forget anything! read more

This is what Fan living is all about. The ability to walk to one of the many "old school" convenience stores that dot the area. Shields Market represents the very top of what a market should be. In a neighborhood where homes hover in the 450-600k range at the top, the tastes of the average fan dweller have gone considerably upmarket. Luckily the recent redesign of Shields Market (run by Mary of Joes' Inn fame) has kept way up with the trends and tastes of this more upscale client. Sure you can grab some ciggies and beer, but now you can choose from a seemingly endless choice of upscale, boutique and local beers. They advertise "order at Joe's and pick up at Shields Market" which is a convenient and less fussy way to get your grub on the go then the seemingly always busy Joe's Inn. The full menu including beer and wine is available for pick up. There is a wide variety of Greek Specialties and baked goods to solve any late night or last minute craving. Fresh produce bought locally is also on hand and changes along with supplies. They even have a nice selection of vegetarian choices, an unusual option for a store barely 40 feet wide! Shields Market is so good they would do well by starting a chain of them to serve all of the neighborhoods in town. Come on Shields, bring us more, more, mooooore! read more

Welcome to the quick shop for the foodie in you. I loved the small, cozy feel of this place that echoed even into the "beer hut" (much too small to be a cave). Most of the shelves were stocked with organic and/or local goods which I appreciated. Staff was friendly and able to tell us about some of the local finds in the store. Great thing is they are open late and we weren't the only late night folks scanning the fridge for some lactose free ice cream (which they had!). I could see myself coming in here often for their extensive collection of wine and interesting cheeses if I lived in the area. Stop by to get a feel of what Richmond is all about. read more

I had the pleasure of living within walking distance of Shields, and it was definitely "the spot". Since I've moved I find myself really missing being able to walk over. Shields is adorable, for one, and extremely convenient. Want to order delicious food from Joes Inn, but don't want to sit down and eat there? Pick it up at Shields! Craving King of Pops, but don't want to drive there? Go to Shields! They always have a selection. Need a bottle of wine, or some beer? Shields has a huge selection (especially for the size of the place). Forgot to make your lunch for today? Stop by and get their pre-made food such as wraps (I ate these religiously for 2 years), salads, and yummy deserts like the Oreo Fantasy or Peanut Butter Dream! I can't say enough good things about Shields, I've never met an employee I didn't like either, super nice and friendly people. This is "the spot" in the fan y'all. read more

This market is fucking great. My only real issue is that I wish they had a better produce section...and maybe even meat section...but maybe that's just asking too much... First of all, I think the people who work here are among some of the friendlier Richmonders I've ever encountered...maybe they aren't true Richmonders but either way, I'm glad to see them when I walk in the door. I love that Joe's Inn is right across the street and that they manage the market too. The beer and wine selection are pretty decent and I always find myself standing in the beer cooler...by myself...for at least 10-15 minutes. weirdo. Oh. My. God. Shields Market saved me today from a sea of finals, ridiculous projects, and the desperate search for a roommate. But seriously. I am speechless. This was such a great little neighborhood market! There was Blenheim ginger ale (my crack), a decent selection of cheese and sopressata, a case of cupcakes, and some take out sandwiches. I got a Sprecher cream soda, a tuna wrap, and a cupcake. Everything about it was excellent--the price (under $8 for all three), the quality, the ambience... I'll be back. Hell, I might even move to that apartment two blocks away just for the sheer convenience of Shields. *UPDATE* Their cupcakes are from Pearl's in the West End and they always have a decent variety of flavors. The cake is always moist* and there's plenty of decadent frosting, but not an obnoxious amount. I like the red velvet, EVEN THOUGH it's frosted with buttercream, but the Top Hat (yellow cake, chocolate icing) and the Candy Cup (peanut butter cake, chocolate frosting) are also great. Shields Market is a great locally owned convenience spot. Any time I need a snack, beverage, veggie to finish out dinner or bottle of wine I make a quick stop here. First off: the selection of convenience grocery items is much better than your average convenience store. You'll find Amy's Organic burritos and soups, organic frozen vegetables, specialty chips and crackers and more. Second, this store is owned by Joe's Inn, the restaurant across the street, and there's a case that's full of take-out goodies made by the restaurant. In winter, they often have delicious stuffed acorn squash. You'll also find salads, Greek specialties, pasta dishes and other meal options. There's also always a selection of freshly baked cookies, etc., at the checkout. If you order take-out from Joe's Inn, this is also where you pick up your order. Third, when the new owners gutted and remodeled the original business, they added a big, wooden wine shelf that's always packed with a variety of bottles. There's also a walk-in beer refrigerator with the standards and a few less common varieties. You'll also find a wide selection of sodas and other drinks that always includes San Pelligrino and Orangina. Fourth, right inside the front door there's a cooler area that's filled with fresh fruits and vegetables. A few weeks ago I was making dinner and realized I didn't have any vegetables to finish out my meal. I stopped in here and picked up a sweet potato and broccoli rabe. I couldn't believe I found broccoli rabe at a quick, convenient market! Overall, I love this market. It's the perfect quick stop for almost anything you need. read more

I am so happy that someone shared the "secret" of Shields Market with me. Okay, I guess that it wasn't too much of a secret, but who knows how long I would have gone without discovering this gem. As it is, I lived here in the fan for exactly 3 days without knowledge of its existence and I don't know how I survived. I woke up on day 4, slightly hungover and with multiple chocolate cupcakes on the verge of staleness and wondered to myself how I was going to tempt my roommates into eating another vegan chocolate stout cupcake. I remembered a conversation from the night before about making whipped cream/leftover cake/ fresh fruit layer dessert and knew that I had my solution. One problem: I was in need of heavy cream to make the whipped cream. There was NO WAY I was going all the way to a major grocery store for heavy cream. Then I remembered Shields Market, I applied a layer of mascara and sunglasses (counterproductive, I know) and went on the trek. I was greeted with a great market with an awesome wine selection, gourmet chocolate bars, mix & match six packs, and chips ahoy.. I'm hooked. Did I mention the great selection of everything else? They might not have multiple brands of spaghetti noodles to choose from, but they do have more then your typical convenience store. Including heavy cream. Long story... well, long... Ok, so you're in the neighborhood. You have a choice of Strawberry Street or Shields. Which do you go to? For snacks, missing dinner ingredients or other convenience store foodstuffs, you could go to either. For household items or prepared food, go to Strawberry street. For beer, wine, champagne, fancy beverages, upscale foods or local items, go here. The alcohol selection here is wider and prices are good. I've been here once when there was a beer tasting and that was cool, unexpected. You can build your own six pack. As you can see in the photos, they have one of those walk in fridge things for the beer. They have many locally produced snacks and dessert items, like Pearls Cupcakes. You just look at those tasty cupcakes at the register and try and get out of here with ONLY a sixpack when you've been sent on a beer run. You try it. read more

Does anyone else think it's weird that the convenience store owned by Joe's Inn is actually nicer than Joe's Inn?? Only in Richmond I suppose. Sheilds market is clean and has a pretty upscale selection for a convenience store. They also serve a variety of ready made food from their case and I have never had anything less than delicious (and at a fair price to boot). My favorite market on Earth. I used to always have my neighborhood markets where it would take me so long for the regulars to start being nice to me--and even then they'd still act like I wasn't kosher enough. Not at Shield's. The first time I ever walked in to Shield's, I had a good conversation with Kiera; and boom. Now I never walk in without the "Oh hey!" from every single person who works there. They treat everyone who walks in the door like they're a pal. That is how neighborhood markets should be. Oh yeah, the selection. It's good. Descent selection of wine, beer, pasta, crackers, chocolate, soda--everything. I even come here to pick up a bag of lettuce from time to time. read more

I LOVE THIS PLACE! Great for late night snacking, picking up some really decent cheeses for fantastic prices (boars head cheeses for under $5!) Their sausage/dry salami selection is decent for how tiny it seems, also the same goes for their wine selection! They used to have an amazing Cider selection, but i feel like most people fall off the crafty ciders and go more toward the mainstream so they must not carry as many anymore...great chicken salad also! They always have a nice sweet escape in their front case whether it be a cupcake from Pearl's or a small container of Oreo Fantasy- which brings me back to elementary school...chocolate pudding, cool whip, and crushed Oreos never tasted so freaking good! read more

How I absolutely love Shields Market! I used to live right around the corner from this hidden place. You'd never know it was there unless you walked or drove down Shields. I literally went there everyday to get lunch. And usually if you order from Joe's Inn for take out, you have to pick it up at Shields. The beer selection is a lot nicer than your average grocery store. I loved having access to Lagunitas right around the corner from me. The staff is great and you'll make friends with them quickly if you go there often like I did! Oh and if you love rice pudding, you will eat the entire container when you get it, I LOVE the rice pudding! read more

This is an absolute Fan gem. With great local options such as King of Pops, Nightingale ice cream sandwiches, C &C cinnamon rolls, and coffee it's a place you'll want to frequent. This place is great! It is so charming inside and out and they have everything you need for a "quick stop to the store". The staff and owner are very warm people and I love just hanging out with my dog and passing the time with good conversation. They also have the cutest dog sculpture sitting out front! read more

I came in a week ago and one of the employees was incredibly condescending. I understand this is a neighborhood shop with a lot of regulars. But being on a casual basis with some customers does not mean you treat everyone so flippantly. I changed my mind about something I was going to purchase and handed it to this boy behind the register telling him this while paying for the other 5 items I WAS purchasing. He snapped "oh great I guess I'll put it back". then when I looked at him incredulously he said he was joking. It was rude, obnoxious, degrading and a terrible way to treat a person. to add insult to injury, I received no response from managers. I tried emailing, using the contact form on their website AND their facebook page. Radio silence. Way to make it crystal clear that you don't care about customers experience. read more

I live right through the alley from here and stop in all the time. They have just enough selection to cover all of my cravings and missed grocery items.
