Libbie Market is the Near West End's premier boutique grocery store. It's maybe a quarter of the size of a major retailer, so I find it to be a less anxiety-inducing experience. (Grocery shopping is among my least favorite activities.) They have a decently sized parking lot, and I haven't had trouble finding a space. During the holidays, they had folks guiding vehicles into open spaces, so that was a nice touch. Inside, sale items are to the right upon walking in, followed by produce also to the right, deli and prepared items straight ahead, and frozen food back to the right. They have a good selection of Nightingale ice cream sandwiches and DeLuca Gelato pints. Snacks and refrigerated items are near the back, then as you loop toward the left there's a bunch of wine and beer, other random stuff, and bread/bakery items close to the check out. Lines are Covid safe with "stand here" stickers on the floor. Staff is pleasant and efficient. If you just need a handful of random items, this is a great option. I do grocery delivery for bulk orders, as I can generally find better prices through others. read more

Love this little local market!! I remember when it was Lukhard's! This is an exclusive, unique store stocked with hard to find items but also carries your basic staples and sundries. The prepared food and deli section is amazing! The cheese case is gloriously grate - you won't find a cheddar selection in town. It's that Gouda! Ok, ok, I know what you're thinking: "Brie done with the cheese puns!" One more thing: for real, don't pasteurize (pass your eyes) over the cheese case... heavy groan! I'm done! The impressive wine choices are popping and beer area is "ale" that and a bag of chips! There's a decent organic section, a fresh produce and floral department but one of my favorite parts to this store is the incredible bakery and candy department. It's smallish but mighty! This is one of the few spots in RVA where you can find Grandma's of New England coffee cakes which are fantabulous! Check it out! It's sweet!! I love the little café as well to come enjoy a respite for lunch, coffee, tea or just to relax and people watch. The check out is a breeze, and if you spend $50 you get your choice of a free product from the shelf on your way out. The place is always clean and the staff is uber helpful! The parking is a bit precarious so take your time going in and out. Nevertheless, Libbie Market is one of the best little shops around! read more

I just had probably the worst shopping experience ever in Libbie Market. I have never been treated so poorly as a customer and I am not one to leave reviews or take things to heart, but this is truly something I cannot stop thinking about. I live very close to the store and me and my husband are frequent customers, but after this I will probably choose to go elsewhere. I went in for a few items, one being an almost $60 bottle of wine and when I went to check out the woman at the cash register (older dark/gray hair) couldn't have been more rude. I was polite and handed her my driver's license where she proceeded to roll her eyes and act completely inconvenienced and say that she did not have her glasses and that she would have to find someone else in the store to look at my ID. She was absolutely rude the entire time at check-out after that and threw my stuff in a bag and didn't even acknowledge me. This was VERY disheartening from a local, well-loved grocery store and the owners/management at Libbie Market should really re-think who they have representing their business. read more

I went to Libby Market, over Christmas holiday weekend. The market's parking lot is accessible and lanes are well marked. The store is very orderly. The neighborhood is lucky to have such a market. The fruit is fresh and they have a diverse variety of fresh produce. The market has specialty items (bread, salad dressings, meats, cheeses, international products). *The prices are at a premium for most items. It was my first time at the store. I looked for Goya ginger beer, picked up a sandwich (that they make fresh, at the deli) bread and tea cookies. The only advice I'd give is to engage more with your customers and to make all areas of the store well lit...some of the areas, like where the tea cookies are, are dimly lit. The cashier at the deli talked to me while I waited to get my sandwich. The 2 guys at the register had no conversation (not even a hello or thanking me for shopping with Libby Market. Remember that your customer has choices regarding where to shop in Richmond, Va. (ie. the store is in par with Wegman's) You have a nice store. read more

Came across this market when I was on the hunt for my flavor Nightingale Ice Cream sandwiches. They had more selections that most of the markets that I went to. I caved in and bought 3 of the 6 different flavors that they had. The staff were super friendly and helpful in any questions that I had. Libbie is an upscale grocery store. The offerings are pretty standard with a few specially items thrown in. So you may be reading this review and asking yourself why they are worthy of 4 star rating. First is their outstanding service. Everyone is always smiling and kind. They never complain. They seem genuinely happy to work here. That within itself effects the atmosphere of the store. Secondly, they are consistent. They have some of the best Sweet Tea in Richmond for just over $1. (As a NC native where cheap delicious sweet tea abounds this is alone is worthy of the 4 stars). My favorite snack is their potato wedges which you'll find in the hot food section. Their fried chicken isn't half bad either. All in all, a great stop for baked goods, prepared foods and a last minute dinner ingredient. read more

We absolutely love Libbie Market. Great local grocer with fresh produce, prepared foods, coffee bar, fresh pastries, the works. They have some secret, old-school Ukrop's recipes (fried chicken!!) which make me come back on a regular basis even though I live 25 minutes away. Their catering service is also highly recommended and top-notch, and I use them frequently for office meetings. It looks like an old-fashioned neighborhood grocery store, and they do indeed have some items and services that have disappeared from the chain grocery stores, but the similarity stops with the characters who work there. It seems like they are hired by a company that gets a tax break for hiring workers who are otherwise unemployable, such as the mentally disturbed and petty criminals. It makes for a rather unfriendly and uptight shopping experience. I swear, I was asking for directions to the restroom, and as I turned to go into it, one of the guys who had been stocking cans ten feet away from me rushed into the restroom and locked himself in. Overall, definately not friendly service or staff. If you're hoping for the reincarnation of Ukrop's , this ain't it. It looks like we'll have to drive out to the county line and shop at Wegmans, if you want the whole package; good selection and good service. read more

A great place to go if you need to pick up some groceries and you don't want to deal with Kroger. They have a pretty good selection of the staple pieces of meals - pasta, rice, meat, prepared meals. They also have a bit of toiletries and clean-up supplies including toilet paper and paper towels. But, don't go there for a variety of selection for food - you'll likely pick between one or two brands/types. And don't go for the bulk items. They surprisingly have a large wine selection considering the size of the market. And (most importantly) they have some Ukrop's brand food! One downside... parking. The parking lot has a fair amount of spaces but it still manages to get packed in the evening. read more

If you want to be treated like a pile of sh*t , by both staff and customers.... well this is the place to go. I recently went in to buy a bottle of wine for a co-worker as a gift for their return post pregnancy. I was told by a friend that this was her favorite place to get her wine and of course I wanted to do something nice. The parking lot was small and packed to the brim which was the first problem ... it took me about five minutes to find a place to park ( but that's not really their fault ) but an honest complaint just the same . When I walked into the store I was thrown by how dirty it was. I had never been to the libbie market so ....I was expecting, because of its location and that zip code that it should have been a little bit more high-end ,something like a ,Fresh Market or Whole Foods... it looked a little bit like a Food Lion that got better merchandise. They had a wonderful assortment of cheeses and prepared foods and a very large selection of wine I have to admit that I was actually impressed. There was so much going on in this store at one time that quickly I was becoming overwhelmed. I tried asking the employees for help , that was truly a waste of time ,most of them wouldn't make eye contact with me or would flat-out ignore me! I honestly followed a woman through the store down the main aisle saying :ma'am could you help me, ma'am, could you please give me a hand... hahahahhahaha... she literally looked me ,dead in the face turned around and went off through one of the staff only doors that's when I found the manager. He watched her walk through the door he saw me say :ma'am could you please help me!!!!! When I told him how rude I felt that that was, he says " sometimes it happens " ( literally WTF ) But he did help me find the wine . That's why I'm actually giving it 2 Stars. ( was only going to give it 1 ) as for the rest of it. I'm not surprised in this town... the area where, libbie Market is ,is a pretty snooty, stuck-up, part of town anyway. Let's just say that I'm not the type of person that you would find at a libbie market at any given time ,I don't fall within their desired profile I should say. Which is most likely why I was ignored by the staff, pushed into, bumped into .... foot step on and stared at, by the other customers. I don't think that I would ever go back to libbie Market unless it was something very important. I had read good things about the sandwiches so decided to stop by when I was in the area. I got a made to order sandwich. You fill out a piece of paper and mark off the bread, spread, middle (meat), cheese, and toppings. The ladies behind the counter were pleasant and helpful. I choose the Boar's Head Oven Gold Turkey Breast as my middle and was excited to try it once I got back to work. However, upon opening the package I was very disappointed to find the sandwich had no meat in it! For me, meat is a priority on a sandwich so this was very disappointing. This is a total convenience play. You don't want to go to Kroger or Martins, so you suck it up, know you're going to pay a premium, and hit Libbie Market. And, you will pay a premium, but the parking lot's less of a hassle and the checkout counters are almost always staffed. As for their sandwiches, welcome to the "no ingredient" sandwich. Honestly, I recently ordered a turkey and Swiss sandwich and couldn't find the turkey. Awful. In fairness, if you pay a premium -- there's that word again -- they'll apparently add additional ingredients. Why not just make a decent sandwich in the first place and price it accordingly? ("Oh... I see... you actually want turkey and cheese on that turkey and cheese sandwich..."). Then there's the take out food... assorted salads and entrees like beef filet, chicken fingers and shrimp. I never touch the stuff because it just doesn't look appetizing. Maybe it's the lighting. Who knows, but it always looks as thought these items have spent one too many days in the case. So if you're in a hurry, not on a budget, and just want to pick up some basics, the Libbie Market might be for you. But, oh... those empty sandwiches... read more

Libbie Market was purchased by former Ukrop's employees a few months ago. Since taking over, they've given the store a bit of a makeover, and have somewhat changed the focus of the inventory. When it was Joe's Market, this smallish grocery store had a heavy focus on gourmet good with a few grocery necessities mixed in. The new owners have evened out the inventory, meaning that there are some more basic grocery items, but there's still a nice selection of gourmet goods. There's also a newly obtained ABC license, meaning you can get beer and wine. Yay!!! Libbie Market has a chef on staff, and they offer hot to-go items during meal times along with a chef's case of items that are ready to be heated and eated. I like the hot soups, especially the Maryland Crab, the salad bar, the hot fish and the spiced cold shrimp. I've gotten prime rib slices for my boyfriend, and while it is pricey, it's always cooked just right. Catering is also available. You can also order made-to-order sandwiches from the deli. There's also a nice meat case that offers cuts that are actually the size of one proper serving. This makes me happy. I love being able to pick up a small steak that's 4-6 oz. and eat the whole thing without feeling like I'm overdosing on beef. There's also a nice selection of specialty cheeses, spices and condiments. I recently picked up some awesome pickled green beans and some locally made salsa. One of the owners is almost always in the store, and the staff is all friendly. They've held onto the Ukrop's mentality of working hard to keep the customer happy. read more

I am so glad that this store is on my way home from work. Zip in and pick up some beautiful fresh fish for dinner. A six pack for the hubby. Some ice cream for my neice. Coffee for me on my way to work or Krispy Kreme donuts for that morning meeting that is probably going to go one about three times as long as it needs to and that I won't get through without some sugar and caffeine. The prices are a little more than what you will pay at a larger store but convenience can't be beat. It is truly get in/get out. Not five stars because I really miss those little gourmet items that they used to have that made it a really fun store to browse. Still, they are doing a great job balancing between convenience store, grocery store and corner market. Also, shopping local is a great good thing and this store is locally owned and operated. I've been to Libbie Market a few times, but most recently it was to pick up the best locally made bloody mary mix and pickled veggies (green beans and okra). If you haven't tried these products yet, you really, really should. Just add a little vodka and maybe some horseradish (if you like it extra spicy like I do), and you've got a perfect Sunday morning. Libbie Market carries a solid selection of locally produced products, gourmet items, and other pantry and fridge staples. They also have a deli, from which I've ordered a mighty fine sandwich, and a bakery. The staff is super friendly, and if you ask someone a question they can't answer, they'll find someone for you who can. The parking lot's on the smaller side, but I've never had an issue scoring a spot. If you're in the Libbie & Grove area and in need of some groceries or specialty food items, give Libbie Market a go! I have been in here several times since they have switched name and ownership from Joe's Market to Libbie Market. I went in for flowers the other day as they used to always have pretty good arrangements and I was visiting a sick friend. Much to my surprise they had pretty much nothing which really put me off for some reason. The store used to be known for it's gourmet selection of groceries not carried by most other stores in town but again, I will hold my judgment until they get things sorted out as it really seems in a state of flux still. They have a small salad bar, produce section, bakery, prepared foods, deli, seafood and meat sections. There are some seats to dine in and a small covered terrace with seating directly outside. The store is a fiasco right now and the employee's did not know where to send me and most knew nothing about the surrounding neighborhood. The store has taken on an air of desperation and it seems to me like they are months from getting anywhere near what the Joes' Market operation was. I assume they are still working out suppliers and the "product mix" but for now I will be avoiding it until they get their act together. Sorry but I will update in a few months. read more

This place saved me on a trip to Richmond, which is a city that is severely lacking in vegan options! I walked to all the local breakfast places and none of them had a non-dairy option for even just a bagel! Breakfast is especially tough when you're vegan as everyone wants to make everything with eggs and butter. I walked into Libbie Marker and at 8:30am the deli made me a custom sandwich! I had a baguette with hummus, roasted veggies and portobello strips, sprouts and avocado. All for just $4.99! I got another one to go for later in case I have a hard time finding lunch! They have a great selection of options for all dietary needs. They will even make you a sandwich on gluten free Rudi's bread if you just ask! There are many prepared food options, too if you're on the go. Even wine! They also have about ten different coffee options in there. I had Ethiopian Yiegacheffe! One doesn't go to Libbie Market for mass sizes of paper products or items currently found in Super Sized stores that carry more junk than food. Libbie Market is boutique grocery shopping. You go there for the best cuts of meat and fish, locally grown veggies and that perfect bottle of wine. No, it isn't cheap but sometimes less pricey means less quality. People who work there are actually nice and helpful. Another bonus, there are still items made by Ukrop's kitchen. My only complaint, the parking lot can be a horror; pick the right time. read more

You pay for the convenience of having a local Market but with that should be items that are not near the expiration date. Quite a few times I've picked up items that were expiring within a few days...had already expired ..or had been frozen I swear at least over a year. The place is usually a train wreck ...boxes everywhere and a funky smell. Granted all of the employees are super nice which is great but that's where it all fades. Libbie Market is not safe for anyone worried about COVID 19. I would not subject my family or friends to eat the food that is served here, as a dishwasher I was instructed to only rinse dishes that had raw chicken meat and fish to save time. There is a cockroach infestation and mold infestation. If you go to the back and look at the ceiling it's covered with black mold. Every time I was there I saw roaches. The dishes are always left unclean and the back of house is falling apart and could probably be condemned for an OSHA violation. Please consider your health first before shopping here. read more

They make the best pies. They are fresh frozen though, meaning they come in frozen and then they thaw them out and put in display case lol. They do have an awesome strawberry rubar pie in season and a incredible dutch apple pie. read more

I don't know what the fuss is about. I heard good things about this place and they had a specialty cheese I wanted in stock so I checked it out. Big mistake. At about 1:15 on Saturday my girlfriend and I showed up to have lunch and buy our Halloumi cheese. The place was a wreck. Café tables were filthy. Small selection of prepared foods for lunch, and what was left had been picked over and not refreshed. There were cardboard boxes piled on top of shelves and on the ground under counters and in corners. Really unimpressive. If it weren't for the specialty foods on the shelves, I would have thought I was in the nasty supermarket in the locals section of downtown Cancun that I once had the misfortune of entering. Try Ellwood Thompson instead. ET is bigger, has better variety, and definitely a lot more pride in the store than this place. read more
