There's a very wide variety of Asian and Hispanic ingredients here. It's nice that they're able to source some fruits that other groceries typically aren't able to like cherimoya, mangosteen, and longan. I haven't gotten meat here before, but it all looks fresh. The only downside is once you start getting close to the seafood section all you'll be able to smell is fish. The last time I went I got some plantains and they fried up nicely. read more

Since we don't have an H-Mart for some reason this store is the next best thing. They sell food from all around the world and have the best and freshest produce around. Their prices are also really good and affordable. They are lacking in the customer service department at the registers. New Grand Mart is my favorite international/asian grocery store in Richmond. They have a large variety of produce, meats, frozen items and regular shelved items. They carry a lot of Japanese items I regularly buy, yakiniku sauce, bulldog sauce, kewpie mayo. I love their instant ramen section they have the biggest variety I have seen. I've only visited the Chesterfield Midlothian Turnpike location, but there is another one in Henrico. Really vast selection of pantry and packaged Asian and Hispanic foods, including aisles of noodles, ramen, spices etc. I'm sure if you were looking for something, they would have it. Prices are a little high and the store itself is large but pretty dirty. This store has a wide variety of Asian and Hispanic foods, snacks, produce and items for your home and kitchen. In the back of the store there is meats and a seafood section with live and fresh fish. The fish area has a pretty strong fish smell but you can also smell the cleaning products which is nice too. There is a huge area for ramen and ramen items you can throw in like seaweed strips and more. They have several different selections of kimchi in the cooler and in the aisles in cans and I grabbed a few different ones to try. In the front of there store there is a small restaurant with a bunch of different foods that is hot and a little sitting area where you can enjoy it there if you want. The store was a little dirty as far as the floors and coolers and a lot of items did not have prices on them so I had to assume for a few things I got. All over this is a very nice store for items you would not find in a regular grocery store. read more

While this supermarket conveniently has products that are difficult to find elsewhere in the area, it leaves a LOT to be desired: 1 - The store is not clean. They should be referred to the Department of Health, for inspection. You cannot ask them for assistance. 3 - The Korean Management/Owners are gruff, rude, unhelpful and unfriendly. 4 - Packaged/Canned food items are often WELL beyond their expiration date. 5 - The parking lot is pitted and poorly maintained. As an alternative, I'd recommend the other New Grand Mart on Horsepen and Broad St.. It is far cleaner, and the staff is a bit more helpful. read more

New Grand Mart has served me well for many years now. The weekends can be really busy so I try to do my shopping Sunday evenings or during the week. Like most grocery stores or markets it's easy to discover a few things that you like here more than somewhere else. Sometimes it's a fresher selection of produce or a cheaper selection a vegetable. Service and cleanliness are better than their local competitors as far as international markets go and prices are food. After a busy day or before deliveries the shelves can be a bit bare but hasn't usually been a problem. The parking lot needs help but that's not up to the store or its owners to take car of but felt it was worth mentioning. We've probably been here a hundred times over the years and even though it's not as convenient to get to anymore there's still things we come here for specifically. read more

Given on what day you go the produce isn't the best quality and some of the store might have a strong fish smell. Each time I believe I reached the final frontier of interesting stores in Richmond, somehow I'm introduced to something new! The New Grand Market is a 3 store chain, with 2 locations in Richmond. It is at once an Asian and Latin supermarket, with goods serving each group equally. They honestly have items I've not seen elsewhere, including fruits, veggies, packaged and frozen items. They also have a restaurant in the front that based on clientele must be good and will be tried on another visit! I'm told that if you buy their fresh fish, they'll fry it for you! Which brings me to the only negative, which resulted in my subtraction of one star, was the smell around the fish area that was breathtaking in a bad way! I found the majority of the produce to be in Poor condition. When I first walked in, I was impressed by the 'mountains' of produce, but upon closer inspection, you could see it was not fresh for most of it. It was quite warm and humid in the facility, and that probably didn't help. Prices were quite a bit higher than Walmart or Kroger, including for their meat, which was honestly a very limited selection. The cleanliness of the place was very low, and honestly, I wouldn't touch any of their seafood. I'll stick with smaller Latino Marts and Walmart/Kroger/Wegmans for quality produce and prices that really are lower than this place. read more

I'm just super happy that they opened an international store. They have many other locations, but finally one in Richmond! It's clean, well-stocked, and the prices are great. They have Korean, Thai, Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Spanish, Vietnamese, and many more ethnic items... The staff is friendly and their prices are reasonable and cheaper on some of their fresh produce than regular stores in town. There's a reasonable selection of frozen items and fresh produce. The selection on the noodles, seafoods, snacks, and candies were impressive and I haven't been disappointed in any of my purchases. I love walking up and down the store reading labels and discovering new items. Pretty good selection of pan items too. My family and I like to do a lot of hot pot and hibachi at home and you can basically find everything you really need for traditional hot pot: veggies, different kinds of fish balls/cake, thinly sliced beef, and asian satay sauce. I've been to a few asian grocery stores in the area and I have to say New Grand's is the largest in variety and has the best quality produce. Since the owners are Korean, they actually have some really good made kimchi! They also have a small Korean restaurant inside! The food is alright. I enjoyed the noodles there...but that's for another review. So if you want a drink or a food to buy before you go shopping for groceries. Also wish they had some fresh prepared Chinese or Japanese items but not really, besides seaweed salad. Also their dried seaweed was insanely overpriced and I could not find smaller bags of rice (I was looking for a certain type for making rice ball). So it's a mixed bag, but definitely good for produce and staples, plus the staff is more pleasant than Tan A and the prices lower. read more

I have been awaiting the opening of this store for what seems like forever, so when I saw on Yelp that it had opened, I immediately planned to check it out during my weekly weekend grocery run. Walking in to the store, I nearly cried tears of joy. I have been wanting a store like this ever since I moved to Richmond four years ago. The store is fairly large and still very bright and new. Since it was already 8:10PM, I first went to check out the restaurant area (closes at 8:30PM). I had wanted to get something to-go to take home to eat after buying groceries, but the combo dish I wanted (jja jjang myeon plus sweet and sour pork) was only available dine-in. Thus, I decided to order in. The price was moderate, but the portion was HUGE, so it's a very good value. I kind of wish the pork half of my bowl came with some rice, but at the same time, I guess having it be all meat is a good deal too. The noodles were excellent, and I hear they are made in-house. There are a good number of Korean dishes on the menu, and I'd love to try more on my next visit! As for the store itself, I spent a good hour wandering and exploring. Like others have mentioned, it is organized by cuisine type/region. There is definitely quite the variety of goods, ranging from Korean to Chinese to Vietnamese to Indian to Mexican to Middle Eastern. Part of me actually wished they had less breadth and had focused on a more comprehensive stock of one region (e.g. East Asian), but I guess having all of these goods in one store is kind of cool too, and it claims to be an international market after all. I think it will take me a while to become familiar with this store and where everything is located, but it seems to carry most of everything I would need. There were a few items that I haven't seen anywhere else in Richmond (non-frozen beef tendon, salmon belly) that I used to get back in college, so that was exciting. They even have Mexican coke which I use in my stewed pork dish! As for the quality of the goods, it's relatively good quality. Maybe not the best ever, but more than decent and everything is clean and organized. The produce area was pretty large and extensive. Since I came so late, they had already packed up the fresh seafood area, so I didn't get a chance to see all the fish. They have a live fish section too, which I haven't seen anywhere else in Richmond. As for prices, they are not particularly cheap, but I suppose reasonable for Richmond. Back in California, Asian grocery stores were great because they tended to be cheaper than their Western counterparts; here, I think I would come more for their specialty/ethnic items. Overall, I am SUPER excited that this grocery store opened up; there was certainly a need/demand for it. I guess I have a reason to start going south of the river more often. ;) read more

I wanted to like this supermarket more based on the high reviews.... but I went on Saturday and was not impressed 1) some of the produce looked rotten or almost rotten. Especially the mangoes. 2) while they had a bunch of different meat cuts, it didn't look fresh! It looked like it had been sitting there for days... 3) tons of flies buzzing around in the store I did find a bunch of Asian sauces which I couldn't find elsewhere so that was a plus. I didn't find the prices to be great though, as some of the other reviews mentioned. Come here for their non-fresh produce and you'll be fine. read more

It's the best Korean food in the area. I recommend their stews, but all of the dishes are excellent. The market closes at 10pm, but the restaurant inside it closes at 8:30pm. But as long as you order before 8:30, you can linger and take your time eating. The menu is the same for both lunch and dinner. The duk-boki is excellent and they have more familiar dishes like bibim-bop, and traditional meals like mackerel and jampong. Go for the food and then get some groceries. I love this Korean grocery store and food court. They have lots of items and everything I am looking for at great prices. They also have a fantastic food court with lots of options. The food is delicious, fair priced, and comes out relatively quickly. I got the Rabokki (tteokbokki and ramen) and it was incredibly spicy, just how I love it and how it should be made! I guess the owners of this store or chain believe anything is okay for people in the Richmond area looking for quality Asian and international food selections. This store's inventory and variety of selection choices is downright pitiful, and if the owner(s) were at all interested in providing customers with a decent variety of food selections they should visit some of the well known Japanese or Korean chains found on the East and West coasts (Mitsuwa, H-Mart & Hanam, etc.). Really nice store but the female cashier was so rude to me today. She barely opened her mouth to say hello, she slammed all the food I bought into the bags and handed me my receipt with her head turn away crumpled up between two finger like "here, get out." As a Behavioral health RN I am well aware about proper social behavior & skills across many different cultural groups. her behavior was rude across the board. With the social climate the way that it is and the horrific way minorities are being treated it seems like minorities would be kinder to one another. Being Korean, my standards for Korean food are very high. I live in Northern Virginia,where the Asian community is very big, but have attended VCU for undergrad and now grad school. Being in Richmond, I always wanted a big Asian market and good restaurant to pop up. Now, I come to New Grand Mart at least once a week or once every other week. The grocery store has all the necessities and for the most part is fairly priced (when compared to Northern Virginia Asian grocery stores). The food court inside the store is awesome! Most of the dishes are below $10, which make it even better when trying to eat some delicious Korean food. There are a couple other Korean restaurants nearby, but do not taste nearly as good and are pricey. As a added bonus, they also carry some Korean bread and cakes. I would strongly recommend this place. I know that I go just to satisfy my Korean food cravings! read more

I'm so happy theres a big asian market in the Richmond area, that's only 15 minutes away from VCU. So unfortunate that I recently graduated and am moving back to Northern Virginia... Anywho, for all the asian food lovers out there - this place is your shit. Great prices, decently clean, and they have all of the weird, specific, and authentic asian food that you could possibly crave for and need, unlike the small korean market close by that only had a limited variety of foods available. Hours of operation are also awesome. They also have a food court here - which is open 11am-8:30pm. Good amount of variety of food. When my friends and I went, though, they didn't have Donkatsu available, which was a bummer. Flavors weren't the best, but they were there, and also the portions were pretty big. ** Food Court Review ONLY ** The restaurant area is located right next to the registers and the last couple aisles of the store so there may be some customers walking by and admiring the food options here. There are about 8 tables here so there's limited seating. You order at the counter and then you pick it up yourself when your number is called. The food came out in less than 5 minutes and was pretty decent. We got: Jia Jang Myun- noodles/vegetables/pork/black bean sauce, combo fried rice- squid, shrimp, scallop, egg, and black bean sauce with onions and a spicy noodle soup with shrimp and mussels. My fried rice was pretty tasty and had a good amount of shrimp although I am pretty sure the scallops were missing.. The noodle soup was spicy but there was no indication that it was on the menu..? The black bean sauce that came with the Jia Jang and my fried rice were the same but delicious as a side or over the top of your dish. Everything on the menu is under 12 bucks I believe and they have a water dispenser for the food court area. Once you're done eating you move your dirty plates to a rack. I wasn't too impressed by the noodle dishes though but the next time I come hungry before grocery shopping I will probably get something here to eat. Ok, so I'm one of those Yelpers who was eagerly waiting for New Grand Mart to open since last year when it was first announced, drove by frequently to watch the progress, and got more excited than an adult should get from a new grocery store opening. With all that said, I'm a huge fan of this store and have been here 20+ times already. I feel lucky that it's closer to my house than Kroger, which makes it an easy stop. I'm still exploring their diverse product line, experimenting with new things every week, but I am convinced they are the place to buy produce and seafood. Not only do they have a great variety of each, their prices are low! I love how I can buy a whole fish and ask them to cut it up as I want or leave it whole. I love that I can buy blue crabs that are still crawling and live talapia from a tank. I love that they have whole jack fruit! I don't know what jack fruit is or how it tastes, but I see a lot of people buying it so it must be a good thing! I also love that they give me a free bottle of water when I buy groceries...shopping is hard work!
