Kaya- and cream-filled sweet buns from a shelf near the fresh produce
    Julia N.

This place is small but packed with goods and the staff is very friendly and helpful. There's all the standard items you'd expect in a market (fresh produce, meat, seafood, frozen and refrigerated items, canned goods, dry goods in boxes and bags, sauces and spices and teas galore, etc.), but also housewares and freshly-prepared foods. There's even a selection of pastries with a variety of tasty fillings, such as cream, taro, and other fruit. The inside is very cramped, as the small building is filled to the brim with items, and I saw a guy behind one of the counters chopping cuts of meat out in the open, plus cardboard boxes filled with ice containing unwrapped cuts of seafood and meat (including pigs' ears and what appears to be tripe), so if you're squeamish about raw meat and slightly dingy surroundings, this might not be the place for you. But the prices are great, and the produce (vegetables and fruit) is absolutely gorgeous and fresh, and you'll get much better service here than at Tan A. I just wish I had gone here with a recipe in mind, as wandering the aisles, while a fun pastime, was a rather overwhelming experience. I ended up leaving with a cream-filled sweet Vietnamese pastry (delicious), a lovely ripe mango, a small tin of jasmine tea recommended to me by a very nice employee, and a refrigerated cup of coconut juice with coconut slices at the bottom. I can see myself going here regularly for anything I need to cook Thai and Vietnamese dishes (once I learn how, of course).

I love to cook "exotic" dishes, and I could find all of ingredients here. The aisles are labeled so things are easy to find. There's plenty of staff to help you as well. They even have a restaurant type place inside. We took a look at the menu, and it seemed like they offer lots. It smelled delicious! The fruit selection was so huge and was fresh. I browsed each aisle so I'd know what to get on my next visit. I can't wait to go back!

Back home in Houston, I know the only place to find good variety is at Asian supermarkets. So, I searched on Yelp. Here we are. I couldn't believe New Grand Mart has almost all mushroom varieties in the Asian markets: fresh Shiitake Mushrooms, Oyster Mushrooms, King Oyster Mushrooms (hardiest kind), White Beech Mushrooms, Brown Beech Mushrooms, Snow White Mushrooms aka Seafood Mushroom, Enoki (good for grilling), Wood Ear Mushrooms aka black fungus 黑木耳 (incredible meat texture), Baby Bella Mushrooms and Button Mushrooms. The only thing I didn't see was portobello Mushrooms. I immediately noticed the clientele was mixed ethnicity. Wow, the store was playing Spanish music and there were aisles of Hispanic products. So, I concluded that New Grand Mart is a truly an international supermarket. Definitely a good place to share my food culture knowledge by bringing people from other areas to come explore.

I have no idea what that means, but they have good sandwiches. What to get: A Prosciutto sandwich with Fresh Mozzarella added, maybe What else: Expect an upcharge to add Fresh Mozz How to improve: Don't upcharge so much for Fresh Mozz (sigh) Nick's is a little run-down grocery store which sort-of feels like walking into a check-cashing shop or an urban convenience store that just happens to have a wonderful old-school NY-NJ style Italian deli inside. The deli itself is great, and makes a lot of awesome sandwiches for decent prices. As I said, I don't like the weird upcharges for certain ingredients, but so be it. It makes the prices of a sandwich soar from decent to ridiculous. The sandwiches aren't altogether authentic Italian NY-NJ style, but they are very good. I loved the parts of it that I had fresh, however when I had the rest of the sandwich a little later it had gotten extremely squidgy and soggy because they use a regular loaf of bread rather than anythng hard or Italian. Again, makes it less authentic but still very tasty. Despite these remarks, I haven't had a sandwich this good in the Richmond area before, so you should give it a try. And if it were Niche Produce, then they'd only sell unusual and hard to get hipster vegetables and sandwiches. Whereas if it wer Nix Produce, it would close down soon. And if it were Knickers Produce then I would have torn them down a lot more quickly and intensely than I did in this review.

Still pretty new to cooking this kind of food, so I knew I had lots of spices to add to my collection and sure enough this place had all the spices and pastes other places don't sell. Lots of selection and good Indian music playing helped my usual wound up personality relax a little and get lost in staring at the wide variety of things, many I'd never heard of. I took my time browsing and thankfully I wasn't bombarded by employees trying to help. Later on when I got home I just happened to notice 1 of the 11 items I purchased was past it's best by date. Got on here and apparently this I wasn't the first or second person to have this problem. The thing that gets me is there were tons of what appeared to be employees stocking vegetables, you would think at least one of them would be assigned to go out and keep an eye for past due dates on the shelves. Really wanted to like this place with a 5 star, the music and atmosphere were on point but I'm really disappointed I basically wasted $ on something that employees should have been checking themselves. So far away it's a little difficult for me to return. I'm a big fan of Desi next door, and I'm sure I'll be back in the future, but next time I go here I will definitely take it upon myself to keep an eye out for dates. No reason this should have happened when other people already left reviews like this.
