On Saturdays Fresh Market has fresh pizza on sale for 7 dollars. We've enjoyed them for the last few days. They also have excellent pastries. We got a tart and chocolate eclair. This was a special treat. Prices can be high but sales can be found. read more

I stop by here whenever I am looking for something specific. They are a little more expensive than other places but follow the deals. Thursdays they have $6 rotisserie chickens. They also have fresh pizzas you can take home & cook.. I also like their Nut and spices section because they will have things you cannot normally find at other places. This chain has become my favorite store offering great specials. I love the Commonwealth store in Midlothian. I only buy my meats from this store now. Much better quality than Food Lion or Kroger. I try not to look at ratings before I actually rate a place that I've been to. Recently, but I accidentally did. And I'm kind of at awe about the low star count for the fresh market. It's a really good place. I enjoy going there. They have items that normally wouldn't be found in grocery stores. Yes, the prices are a little high. However, it's a boutique type of grocery store and the quality that you're getting the. Selection that you're getting is definitely worth the money that they are charging for it. Even the coffee they have great selections of coffee, which is wild to say, because, who, in the world would think that a grocery store would have really good coffee. But if you want to skip Starbucks and try them out one morning, it may be worth it. Their steaks and meats and proteins of all selection are really good, really well cut, and the people behind the counter actually. The Fresh Market in BranderMill has excellent customer service--staff at the front and around the store are always friendly and helpful. However, the cheese and meat departments were disappointing. Many premium cuts of meat didn't look fresh, and I had to triple-check packaged cheese for mold. The employees cutting the cheese seemed uninterested in their work, which made for a frustrating experience. While the store is clean and well-stocked with other quality items, the meat and cheese departments definitely need improvement. read more

DO NOT try the order online for pick up. This location does NOT have a clearly visible/marked designated parking spot for pickup. Went to get the order and parked right out in front of the store. The delivery person came out but only went to the one designated pick-up parking spot, which we discovered AFTER talking with the manager was on the far side corner building. The clerk did not see a black truck parked there and went back inside. All app prompts where followed - which by the way said nothing about a designated parking spot for pick-up. Had to go inside and ask for our order. The person that said he was the manager was rude and said, "next time find the designated parking spot". So yes, my hubs got rude and used a bad word and the "manager" threatened to call the cops when he picked up our bag that we already paid for. Said we were stealing. We told them the sign was turned around and a delivery truck was blocking the "designated" parking spot. We were the only black Jeep truck parked in the parking lot too. No effort to even glance around for us. These staff members are about the most rude and ill-prepared to deal with customers unlike any I have ever encountered. They need some serious training!!! Ive attached a picture of the pick up parking spot. The tractor trailer that was blocking it had moved while we were in the store trying to get our order. really the worst fresh market produce department. fruit is always just on the verge of rotten. can't even buy the good mushrooms (maitake, oyster, etc) because they always smell like rotting fish. came home with grapes and pears for our toddler and they were both rotten in 2 days. meat department is good, the usual fresh market quality. staff is super nice. read more

Depends on which location you visit with the one on Commonwealth Dr being the worst IMO. I have been in this store and picked up a piece of fruit that was rotten. Sadly, the next piece I picked up was just as bad. One of my favorite things there is the roasted chicken salad. The container we took home was disgusting. We had to avoid bones and pieces of fat. I finally threw it away. The store on Parham Rd, which may have been the original, is impeccable. If I have time, I'll drive over there. Most of the employees are kind and helpful but, there is an older woman cashier and she's loud and rude. One time there was a special if you purchased something in particular and she berated me. When I tried to explain she said she couldn't take my word, she would have to confirm this with the manager. I was so embarrassed!! I received an apology from the manager and I told him of the other experiences I have had with her. He was not happy but that woman needs to go! read more

I've been to almost every Fresh Market in town (and out of town) and by far, the Commonwealth Center Parkway location is the best! Best food (yes, it does make a difference at which location you buy), best and friendliest service! and a really nice store layout (It's not so big that you need to walk 1/2 mile to get through the store). Fantastic market! It is where we buy most of our groceries. Even wine and flowers. Their stores are attractive, clean, and a little dimmer lighting with woodgrain look flooring, which I like. The atmosphere makes you feel much at home. Their prepared deli items wlll usually make a meal for two, which we like. Also a very nice selection of greeting cards ,classy gift bags, and cocktail napkins. And between all their stores, I can usually find one on my way home from somewhere I am already running errands. It was a very nice additiion to the Commonwealth Center right across from the entrance to Brandermill. And to echo comments from a previous comenter, yes, they do have a very nice, friendly meat counter! Oh, I almost forgot to mention several items they are experts on -- prepared mashed potatoes and pies. Their MP's are the best we've ever had -- even beat the ones made from scratch! And when you're in the mood for some pie -- you don't even have to buy a whole one! When you're in mood, just pick up a half one - aleady packaged in an east to open clear container with a lid that snaps closed. Our favorites are the chocolate fudge and pumpkin! And they have a wide selection of gellatos to complement them. I don't think their prices are way above others. What a shame. This place use to be amazing. At 5 pm, went in to get a few items from the meat counter. Waited almost 10 mins and finally another customer asked an employee to page someone. Then go to the deli counter, three people working, and told it would be 10 mins to get American cheese. They do not want my business. read more

So, I love the quality of the food here, although it is pricey, and the service behind the counters is wonderful, but my issue with this place is their alcohol policy. I went in with my husband last week to get items for a nice dinner between us and when we went to the cashier, I was asked for my ID even though I wasn't the one paying. When I inquired why my ID was needed when I wasn't purchasing the alcohol, we were told it was their policy that all accompanying individuals be of legal drinking age and that if I didn't have it, they couldn't sell the wine to us! This policy is not only irritating because we are in our 40s but it says that I now can't buy alcohol at this place if I'm with my teenage daughter because she isn't 21; therefore, I won't be returning and will shop elsewhere where their policy is more common sense. read more

My husband and I were excited when this FM opened. The store is comparable to other Fresh Markets in the area. Per usual, the meat department is excellent, the deli counter is great with very nice and delightful employees, and the produce section (almost) always have what I need. My only real complaints about the store are the layout and the bakery department. The layout is a bit awkward. When you first walk in, you have all this open space in front of the deli and throughout the produce department. However, when you get over to the prepackaged food aisles and frozen foods, it's like those were installed as an afterthought. It is so crowded and clausterphobic over there. Then, when you walk to the beer and wine section right next to those aisles, tons of open space yet again. They really did not think this layout through. As for the bakery, it is definitely a fail for me. I've had positive experiences with the bakeries at other Fresh Markets and rarely have had any issues. This particular Fresh Market might want to speak with the manager that oversees their bakery. I've frequently received items from the bakery counter that were obviously stale. Particularly the cupcakes. The cookies and pies seem to be okay, but the stuff at the actual bakery counter is hit or miss for me. Also, the case with the loose cookies and pastries? I swear that thing is always near empty no matter what time of the day or week I go. The bakery issues can definitely be rectified with a bit more attention to detail with their quality control, which is why I'm not dinging the store too heavily for that. One thing I've learned with Fresh Market is that they can be pretty consistent across the board from store to store with some things while other things (such as departmental issues, customer service) seems to be store-centric problems. Again, management can easily take care of these issues over time and possibly change my rating to a perfect 5-star! read more

So Fresh Market's Meat and Seafood Department service counter employees have now turned into the Covid-19 police. The meat department has a wait in line sign before you can enter. I entered the area from the wrong location near seafood counter, there were zero customers in the area or in line. Observing the seafood for possible purchase the clerk behind the counter walked up and I asked a question about a product, he answered. At that time a young lady walked up behind me with a cart from the main entrance and he chastised her for entering the area without permission..she turn around in disgust and left the store. Minding my own business I made a decision and selected some seafood for purchase the clerk wrapped it up handed to me...then told me I could not enter the area to the meat and seafood dept without coming from the designated entrance. I told him in the beginning I was only viewing the selections and that no one was in line or in the area. The clerk began to lecture me that it was "state law". Once again I told the clerk I was only looking when I walked the area and if it was a problem in the beginning he should have said "I'm sorry but you have to walk around the barriers and I have to approve your entrance to view product for the selection...but he didn't ..he again lectured my on what I could not do...I asked him is this lecture was going to continue...he grabbed the potential purchase and walked off...I left the store. read more

Beautiful produce department and friendly staff there. Cashiers? Hmm, it is a hit or miss (mostly a 'miss!') Quite unprofessional and careless. Lazy too! Such a small market and you need to drag your butt and be uninterested? You get paid, don't you? I think they forget they are not volunteers. Returns: Also a mess! I try to never have to return anything there again, therefore: I don't purchase anything I am not 100% I will like. And that was the return case for a bakery item. Bakery: I agree with Kimberly, above. They are not fresh and some cakes, others at their bakery are extremely sweet (and I have a sweet tooth! ) and eggy tasting; consistency is not good either. What a shame! Normally, these types of markets have excellent bakery items - like Whole Foods, for instance: great bakery. So, I only shop there for unique items I cannot find anywhere else. I also agree with Brandon (above): a Trader Joe's and/or Whole Foods would be a great addition and give us more choices. Hopefully, making Fresh Market aware of competition and hire at least adequate employees for their front line. I almost left all my grocery there once, because of the rude and unprofessional cashier. I love Fresh Market, and especially love their meat department. This review is concerned specifically with the new Fresh Market on Hull Street and their meat department. The rest of the store seems fine, but it's the meat department that keeps me coming to TFM and it's the meat department that has let me down. I have a lot of experience dealing with Kevin and his team in Midlothian, and they have set the bar high for service and quality and the Hull Street Fresh Market does not cut it in comparison. The Hull Street TFM appears to use old meat in sales. I've noticed multiple Tuesdays now that they cover old ground beef with some that's freshly ground. When you get home and open the package up, the ground beef has a brown center with a bright red outer layer, and if you know beef, you'll know that it gets brown when it oxidizes. Oxidization happens on the outside first. If it's brown on the inside, then it's being intentionally covered up in an attempt to get more sales and less waste out of it. In a quality-oriented environment, that's unacceptable. It's what I'd expect in Walmart, but not TFM. You can look at the ground beef that Midlothian sells and see it is a beautiful, fresh red color throughout the entire batch when you get home. The boneless chicken breasts and pork shoulders I buy there have also been sub-par. The chicken has been gooey at times, indicating age or improper storage. The pork shoulders often come with a dried exterior and the netting embedded in the meat, another indication of age or improper storage. In these situations it could be the case that the items are not sealed properly when stored at night, causing faster aging of the products. Regardless of the cause, these situations are preventable if employees pay attention and follow proper food storage and disposal guidelines. The Midlothian store may have spoiled me, but I'm fairly lenient with what I get, and the quality I've seen at Hull Street has not proven itself to even be a consideration when I'm shopping for my meat. While I'm still a pretty gung-ho "Fresh Marketer," I'll wait the Hull Street store out until it steps up its game. read more

Just arrived from NY, and thrilled to see a familiar place!! The staff are lovely, especially Sean in the deli department, and the quality is on par with my NY FM. I haven't bought deli, meat or seafood from anywhere else and won't! Yes it is more expensive but my family is worth the $$$. The only place I felt was not up to snuff was the produce section, however still better than most. I'm thinking I'll shop the Farmer's Markets instead and use FM produce as a decent back up. A very nice looking grocery. Lots of stone outside and a very nice interior. Nice size. I've reviewed other fresh Market's in the regional Richmond area. This is as nice as the Carytown store, maybe nicer. They have, in my opinion, the best meat department of the super markets in Richmond. The beef is outstanding. The chicken breasts on Tues are a fabulous deal. They have an excellent selection of sauages. I know of no other store that has hot Italian sausage, chorizo and Brats that all look so good. And since I've had them on numerous occasions, excellent tasting. This store has a great deli and a fabulous wine layout and selection. It's a very nice addition to the area. I left w/ my sausages and beef. My intent was to do some, as I call it, competitive shopping, and as an ex-retailer, not in the grocery business, (except when I was 7- 10, in my father's grocery ) My opinion in comparing stores is this is a very nice store. read more

I really like The Fresh Market but a few times this year we have not purchased fresh/quality items at the Commonwealth store. Early this year we picked up one of the "quick" meals at the front of the store. It was a steak dish with a very tasty wine reduction sauce. The problem was the tenderloin was the tail end and so thick with tendon we could hardly chew it. That was $17 down the drain. More recently we bought two sweet kiss melons that were in netting that belied their freshness. Both were overripe and mealy (and we ate both within 24 hours of purchase). Lastly, I bought a Mascarpone ice cream that I was craving because it was the only thing in the ice cream cabinet that fell in range of my low carb diet. I started eating it and the texture was all wrong. Turns out the expiration date was over 6 months ago. I don't know if it's the location of this store or what, but we've never had these issues at the Carytown store. read more

Disappointing... Definitely not on par with the other Fresh Markets in the area. The hummus for sale was expired. The meat was a weird brown color. The olives had a film over them. The french bread was stale. There were lots of holes on shelves where things were understocked which leads me to believe it's not doing so well. No surprise with the prices so high and produce so bad. Also, they don't sell those yummy chocolate chip muffins that other FMs sell, they only sell the double chocolate ones which aren't good. So if they can't even give me those, then why go here at all? Really sad that Barnes and Nobles was booted for such a low quality FM. I was really looking forward to buying good meats and veggies, but I will have to keep traveling to the Huguenot store for that. read more

I really wanted to make this my go-to place for fresh fruits and vegetables, but sadly I've been disappointed in the quality and freshness too many times. I kept going back thinking it was a fluke. Nope. Their stuff looks great on the outside but almost every time without fail I get home and my produce is rotten or just not quality. My peaches were either "mealy" or a weird brown color all over when I peeled it. The mango was various shades of brown inside and definitely had a funk to it. Like a sour smell despite smelling and feeling ripe on the outside. Avocados are almost always hard as rocks and when they "ripen" end up with black spots inside. I bought an organic cucumber, making sure it was firm since they begin getting soft on the ends when they are going bad. I got it home, slid it out of the plastic wrap and it was slimy! Strawberries look great at the store but in just two days--every time without fail they all have these rotting soft spots all over. We've never gotten to finish a carton because they rot so quickly. Now maybe the strawberries could partly be because of where I'm storing them in the fridge but goodness...this many bad experiences tells me something is wrong. read more

I like shopping in the store and think it is very nice. My problem is with the holiday meal we purchased for Thanksgiving. We went into the store and tasted all of the foods that were being offered with the meals. The food at the testing was great. We ordered a traditional meal, and a small meal. Pick up went great. Then the big day arrived and we finished cooking the turkey and warming up the side dishes we had ordered. The following items we ordered were almost inedible: stuffing, gravy, cranberry salad. Bland, no taste, really bad! The whole turkey was good, the turkey breast furnished with the small meal was a smoked turkey roll. I don't like smoked turkey roll. (I should have ask more questions about it.) the mashed potatoes were very good. The Cherry Pie was great as always. Overall I consider this experience a fail. I was embrassed in front of my family and friends. I won't purchase this service again. read more
