I stopped in this KK yesterday, Thursday afternoon at around 2:00 PM. I was looking for the heart-shaped donuts with the "sweet heart" messages that KK is advertising nationally in the wake of the one-year lack of the Sweet Heart little candies. Alas, there were none at this location. But, I thought a donut or two would not be a bad thing. The place was empty of other customers, I supposed due to the time of day? I stood at the donut counter for about 2-3 minutes with no body paying attention. Four employees were standing by the drive-thru window talking about something. Finally, the woman who seemed to do most of the talking looked over and came over to serve me. Her attitude seemed to be that she was perturbed at being interrupted and that she was doing me a favor to wait on me. Having selected three donuts, I walked over to the register to pay. She walked back over to the people to whom she was talking before, carrying my donuts, before finally coming over to the register to ring me up. All this time, there was never a smile, no friendly words or attitude. As I left, there were still no other customers in the place. I told RF and we penciled Krispy Kreme into our Sunday schedule. We got to Krispy Kreme around 5:20pm waiting for them to churn out fresh original glazed at 5:30pm. We got a little impatient after a few minutes; we marched in there with our wallets and demanded their donuts. We got 4 original glazed, 1 lemon filled and 1 raspberry filled. We wolfed down those 4 original glazed in no time. Those donuts were so warm, light, fluffy and sweet, it was hard to engulf just one. (I myself can breathe down 6 on a good day. Don't judge me!) They practically melted in my mouth and did not give out a greasy after-taste. Be sure to watch the birth of these delicious goodies on the conveyor belt, it was quite entertaining. Today, I stepped into a Krispy Kreme for the first time. I've had Krispy Kreme donuts once had never before been to an actual store. For a very long time, I imagined the stores to be swamped with hideously irresponsible, pre-diabetics stuffing themselves to a gruesome early death. However, with the fortunate influence of Dr. Atkin's diet, I hoped foot traffic volumes would have plunged as fast as their bloated stock price since 2005. Thankfully, my hopes were confirmed. This Krispy Kreme was basically empty when I showed up at 4pm, the perennial snacking hour. I thought it was closed at first, with the empty donut production line sitting idle like a scene out of a cliché post-apocalyptic flick. I had come with the very earnest expectations of reveling in the fabled pleasures of the fresh donut, so this was not a great start for my quest. At the counter, I had the option of going for a single taste at 99 cents or $7.69 for a dozen. Both were extremely tempting as I had just returned from Australia where similar Krispy Kreme donuts cost a very dear $3 each and $30 per dozen. Maybe that's why I didn't see as many morbidly obese Australians? Hum, imagine the possibilities. In any case, the chocolate-dipped with custard-filling beckoned. As the trays were overstocked with donuts, I knew I was out of luck for a fresh one. As soon as I got my two donuts (enough for a first taste), I could barely restrain myself for all the anticipation. I inhaled the first one ravenously, almost callously. The overwhelming sweetness struck me like a storm wave. Yet, I felt an abject emptiness. Somehow, the cold donut offered up nothing to my satisfaction. Quite perturbed, I immediately went to town on the second donut, devouring it strenuously. Again, I was left with the nihilistic horror of nothingness, neither bliss nor pain. Dejected, I staggered out of the store as I nursed my two-donut stomach bomb. I was at once filled with both dread for the misery to come and an atomic suger high. I remember when Krispy Kreme was popular. Always packed, 24 hour drive thru, dozen to share among friends. Now it's just used as a weight-gaining method for actors (see George Clooney) for film roles. Each donut is approx 250 calories (or more) which makes it one of the most unhealthy snacks you could have. I VERY RARELY eat donuts, but I can appreciate its existence. My favorite has to be either the sugar or choco creme filled. I love that when the hot light is on, it's really easy to score a FREE donut just by asking for a sample. Tonight, we got to eat free donut holes straight from the fryer. I do love watching the dough being fried and glazed. It's pretty entertaining. Makes me feel full/fat just by watching. One thing that might be an extra turn-off was that my friend and I witnessed one of the donut handlers with only ONE glove on but using both hands to scoop up the donut holes onto the cooling sheets. Uhhh... I sure hope that hand is clean, but I would have felt better if she was wearing both gloves. Actually, each worker had only ONE glove on. Unsanitary!! After going to the Krispy Creme in Union City, I honestly expected the same quality in the taste of donuts for this location. Pros: Location: It's right off highway 101 and in a great commercial area where McDonalds is just walking distance from the venue. Donuts: The donuts here are cheap and tasty with a lot of variety to choose from, but in terms of freshness, I wouldn't agree. I came pretty early in the morning around 9am, and they tasted a bit stale. Atmosphere: The place is pretty clean and has a lot of history within the walls of the venue. You can actually see how they make the donuts during certain times of the day which is pretty cool. Cons: Service: Despite the language barrier, the service was not so great. The person helping me kept rushing me and she ended up charging me more than what I ordered. it's a long 20ish minute drive, but it is so worth it. at the peak of my KK obsession, my friends and i went once on a thursday night, and then again 2 nights later on saturday. and everyone bought a full dozen for themselves. granted i never actually finish a full dozen but the fact that i was ever able to eat more than 3 in one sitting kind of makes me ponder the real reason for gaining so much weight during my senior year. hmmm. i swear the workers knew all of our names by the 5th visit....in one month. they are the coolest bunch of staff ever. they enjoy our fish faces we make as fresh glazed doughnuts are made. they laugh with us as we are somehow so amused by their holiday snowmen doughnuts *yay!* remember their doughnut of the day weekly chart? yep...tried every one. and just the other day i got to try their new pink sprinkled valentine heart doughnuts! yay! i'm not a fan of sprinkles though so i won't be eating anymore of those. i don't buy a dozen for myself anymore and i can barely finish 3 in one sitting. but there will always be a place in my heart for krispy kreme. *sigh* oh, and i'm absolutely addicted to the maple flavored ones. keep those away from me if you ever want to see the light of day again! read more

The price I paid for a cream-filled chocolate donut was decent and, on the inside of the place, it's very clean, well-lit and spacious. Facts: * It's located in a sizable shopping center, but be warned that this shopping center can get very crowded whenever Costco is open. * You can also go through the drive thru, but be warned that the line there can be long too. * Huge variety of donuts to choose from. Overall, my donut was not terrible, but the freshness that I would expect from a donut that I bought first thing in the morning just wasn't there. I like the small mom-and-pop donut shops better because, in my experience, they put more emphasis in the freshness and taste of the donuts than the chain places do. I must admit, I got consumed by the Krispy Kreme craze a few years ago when I lived in San Diego. Before it opened there, I used to drive 2 hours up to the block at Orange in LA county just to get some. It wasn't long before people found out about my treks up there and sure enough, I was coming home with 14 or 15 dozen in the back of my tiny Honda Civic. But now, the novelty has died down. Especially the Creme Filled Chocolate Donut, that was very delicious. You can always never go wrong with the original glazed donuts. They were delicously sweet as always, just not warm like I had hoped for them to be. I don't recommend their Mocha drink, it tastes like Carnation Hot Chocolate. Better stick with Coffee. So I'm continuing on my series of places to take your hot date when you're a little financially unstable (aka - yo' broke but you need to impress). This next stop is to the infamous Krispy Kreme Doughnut shop. Conveniently located off Highway 101 in the Costco shopping center. This place has 15+ assorted doughnuts from the simple but sweet sugar glazed to the delicious creme filled chocolate covered doughnut. So taking your girl out here will take some luck and great timing. The key here is the red "Hot Doughnuts" sign. For those that are unaware of the Krispy Kreme rule, this sign indicates that they are making glazed treats and you are entitled to 1 free glazed doughnut upon request. But they are really strict about the rule so don't annoy the staff and abuse the rule when the light isn't on. Luckily this shop is located right off the freeway and the sign is easily viewable. You're going to need to plan your date so that you can calmly drive past the shop several times throughout the night. It'll definitely be on sometime during the night, so be patient but alert. So after forgetting your wallet at home or getting gas at a station at the Rengstorff exit or whatever your excuse is to drive past the doughnut shop the feelings of anxiousness will all disappear once you see that red signal. What's worse is that my receipt with the correct order was taped to my box, which means that nobody even looked to see if it was the correct donuts in the boxes.
