The only real purpose of any Krispy Kreme shop is to sell doughnuts, especially the classic glazed ones the company has built its repute upon over many years. Located not far from the UF campus on 13th Street, this Krispy Kreme is open 24/7 and often has fresh doughnuts availible. Should yours not be hot and fresh, here's a trick: put your doughnut in the microwave for about ten seconds prior to eating it and it will taste soooooo good. I am all for healthy food, all for growing things local and eating local and slow foods and all that BUT you've just gotta love Krispy Kreme nonetheless. This location is an older one, and the buidling is designed in the classic doo-wop 1950s Krispy Kreme style with the giant neon sign and all. It's a fun place and the staff is nice enough, though I agree they could perhaps keep things a bit cleaner. Krispy Kreme! What's not great to say about Krispy Kreme. Was driving home from work tonight and the Hot and Fresh sign was on! Seriously that is all it took. I pulled into the parking lot and jumped out like my car was on fire. You never know who you'll run into there. There were some cool old folks from Canada ordering hot fresh glazed donuts then devoured them right there at the counter. They were followed buy two young students from UF who bought a dozen and a container of milk to tear up sitting right there at at table. Krispy Kreme. It's a simple pleasure. I want these. They're fried wads of dough covered in sugar. I still want them. The shop is sketchy and scary. The countertops look as though they've been cleaned with a dirty mop. The hot doughnuts are only available when traffic is too heavy to get in or out, or better yet, at 3 a.m. I still want them. It's FRIED DOUGH, for heaven's sake. The sign wasn't on when we walked in but we saw them making them in the back so we asked the lady helping us if we could have the fresh ones and she gladly got them for us. Me and my boyfriend stopped here for breakfast on our way to the groceries. We came in, received no greeting, and the staff continued to conversate among themselves. Pure evil, masquerading as a tasty treat. I've been eating Krispy Kreme doghnuts since I was a wee lad. They are pure delicious individual heart attacks in a box. I love the hot glazed, and when I really want to send my blood sugar off the charts, i get the chocolate glazed glazed or one of those unreal Bavarian Kremes. This location is typical on sales and service, but features an awesome 1950s era giant roadside kitsch sign. Under today's sign code this could never be built - and they should make it a local landmark and preserve its neon genius. Note: On Friday and Saturday nights after the bars close at 2 am, you might run into about an hour or so of idiots doing an impromptu 'car show' featuring those freakish giant rims, hideous paint jobs and terrible 'music'. They work fast and efficiently when there's a line but even when there are just one or two customers, everyone has always been very polite. As a kid I used to always get Krispy Kreme, so it was a great surprise to see one still open while visit University of Florida. Ambiance: Very old school feeling, and of course it has the old fashioned Krispy Kreme feel to the place. Coffee: When there a doughnut, there must be coffee! The coffee was good, exactly what your would expect. THE DOUGHNUTS: Of course you have to go with a glazed for one of your doughnuts, but why not get a couple? There all delicious! I was not raised on Krispy Kremes. This I my disclaimer before I write this review. The donut are decent (not my favorite). They are light and fluffy but then completely coated in sugar that makes up the glaze. The only way to eat them is if they are hot and fresh. If they sit for awhile then they taste greasier. They have other options besides the original glazed but they are not as fresh. There are filled donuts too. The shop is small and outdated. There is really no place to sit and eat them if you wanted. This is the factory in town that makes the donuts fot all of north central florida it's where you get the freshest donuts and can find the "Hot donuts Now" sign lit if you're lucky. Krispy Kreme are yeast donuts so if you're a cake donut fan than you'll have to go to dunkin donuts instead but why limit yourself to just one kind of donut indulge yourself and try all kinds! These glazed donuts are exactly what you'd expect from a Krispy Kreme donuttery, airy soft and sweet. Best paired with a cold glass of milk. Many have said it before, but I will say it again, the glazed donuts got to be hot when you eat them, got.to.be. No other way. Their "Hot Now" sign usually turns on around 6:30pm or 7:00 pm everyday, that's the time to stop. The sign also goes on sometime in the early morning too, but I'm not sure of exact when. If you don't get there in time for a hot donut, check the side of the "dozen box" there's a tip on reheating your donut in the microwave. This Krispy Kreme has shockingly good customer service. I consistently visited this donut shop for years when I lived near by (2000-2004), and the staff was super polite and attentive. I have been visiting less frequently the last few years, however they seem to have maintained the same customers first attitude when I've been able to stop by. The reason this location was rated 4 stars and not 5 is due to the room for improvement. I recommend a site renovation. Keep the old style luster, just clean it up a bit. read more
