Stopped in here totally off the cuff just bc the wait for a slice at Di Fara across the street was too long and my husband wanted a snack. Didn't expect much looking at the outside -- only to go in and see the whole fresh bagel-making apparatus, and get a poppy seed bagel my husband calls "the best bagel I've had in quite awhile." This feels like a tiny family-run business that has served the neighborhood for generations (I'm not sure about that though). There is no seating so be prepared to carry everything out. The place is small and they're not going to win any interior design awards - it's purely functional. And the bagels do not disappoint! I ordered an everything bagel with scallion cream cheese and lox. I watched the bagel come out of the oven and going from hot/steamy to hot/toasted was a nice touch. The fish was fresh and served in perfect proportion to the cream cheese. Really, just a great sandwich. Their cole slaw is excellent. Other sides are available and I ordered some black olives but they were the canned variety (I was hoping for unpitted Gaeta, which is a much better match). And there is a basic selection of teas alongside self-serve coffee. Will I return? Definitely. I do wish there was some seating but I'll take fresh lox over that any day. read more

A failed attempt at hitting up Di Fara's (http://www.yelp.com/biz/di-fara-pizza-brooklyn) (#1) resulted in my visit here at Kosher Bagel Hole. Despite being very saddened over missing out on some of NY's finest pizza, the underlying hunger overtook my need for preference and pushed for anything that I could shove into my mouth. After seeing random bunches of Hasidic Jewish gentleman walk in and out of this bagel shop, I was convinced this was going to be a good stop. And for a moment, it was. I ordered a couple of toasted bagels with lox spread and though a bit miniature in size, packed a worthy bite in taste. The spread was creamy, with just enough lox to get some salmon flavor and the bagel itself was devoured in a matter of seconds. I was ready to order another bagel (they have a decent variety here) but decided against it in fear of "bloated bagel syndrome" (#2). The Mexican guys behind the counter were egging my friend and I on about trying more stuff, but we decided against it. The owner seemed like a nice guy and offered us extra napkins after noticing the smears of lox spread on our faces. Instead, we went for some water and juice, which washed down quite nicely. In the end, these bagels are not so mind blowing that I'd go out of my way to return again. I'm not even sure I'd come back after another failed DiFara's attempt. But I do know that if I lived in the area, I'd be like the locals and hit this place up before heading to the train. ---------- (#1): Dom was vacation. I should've called ahead of time. While waiting for our 2-hour wait pizza across the street, we went here and ordered smoked salmon in a bagel. We requested to remove the inside to lessen the carb. They use traditionally made bagel. I haven't eaten at this place for years but was in the neighborhood and decided to stop by, they used to be known for great tuna fish and white fish salad. Picked up 2 sandwiches and honestly couldn't be more disappointed. I've never heard of anyone putting butter on a roll and tuna or whitefish salad on top. Whitefish salad is fatty as is, but butter??? Come on. Maybe it's under new ownership but when you pay $8 for a sandwich and they barely put any salad. I usually have a great experience with this place. Bagels are fresh and hot, and they've got 20 different types of cream cheese. Their breakfast platter is awesome and includes eggs, coffee and home fries. My favorites: 1) Toasted cream cheese and tomato on everything (make sure to specify toasted!) 2) Tuna on everything with lettuce, tomato and spicy mayo 3) Egg and cheese on everything - will not disappoint 4) Marcus - secret menu item - includes munster, mustard, lettuce, tomato and mayo, usually served on an everything bagel. This hack has been around for 10+ years and won't be on their menu, but one of the best things they've got My only downsides are: a) their cream cheese is not temp-tee, it's chalav Yisrael style cream cheese which tends to have reduced freshness B) their orange juice is not fresh and the Tropicana usually expires quickly C) when I asked for a dozen bagels, half everything half sesame, the guy gave me a bunch of plain and whole wheat too. Not a huge deal but would have loved if he confirmed it. Line is usually long, especially on Sundays. However, it moves quickly. Definitely a worthwhile choice if you're looking for an affordable breakfast for the family. I got a dozen bagels, full size orange juice and a quarter pound of lox for around $25. read more

This place is located right by my workplace, so I come here when I'm craving a Salmon Lox Bagel. I've been here twice already, and the first time I got an Everything bagel with salmon lox and plain cream cheese. I got a ton of salmon lox, and the total was around 7.50. One can certainly feel out of place if they are not Jewish. I came in yesterday with a blue hoody carrying my luggage with me as I was headed to the airport. I received the ultimate staredown predominantly by the hassidic jews also waiting in line to grab a bite but I understand particularly in current times why my middle eastern appearance (though I am Armenian) stirred up so much attention. I didn't let that stop me from ordering one of the most delicious bagels I've ever had. The everything bagel combined with an ample amount of scallion spread was absolute perfection. The eatery itself was organized and clean and I found the area itself quite charming. I actually preferred the small town feel of Midwood over the hustle and bustle of Manhattan. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my culinary experience here. I live in Las Vegas but if I am ever in the area again, I will certainly return. read more

The staff behind the counter is extremely fast and rarely make mistakes. Yes, they did make a mistake with me once. They mixed up the toppings on two bagels that I ordered. It's okay though because tuna on a cinnamon raisin bagel doesn't taste as bad as you think it would :P NOTE: There are two counters here, one to order a custom sandwich and one where you can get just coffee and pre-wrapped items. I expected the bagels to be larger in size, but I guess quality for quantity triumphs in this case. I had the whole wheat everything bagel with scallion cream cheese, salmon lox, lettuce, tomatoes, and onions. The grand total was $7 ish and it tasted amazingly fresh. I will be back for more. As far as Kosher bagels go, Bagel Hole is the place to go in Brooklyn. Definitely the most popular kosher bagel store in the neighborhood. Good spreads, quick service, but parking is a nightmare. I highly recommend walking there, or having someone pull up in front. If you double park you WILL get a ticket. Really wish they would upgrade their coffee. I never buy it. Hate when a bagel store buys cheap coffee, because they figure if you buy the bagel, you'll just buy the coffee by default. I can try to pretend to be an expert and talk about their thinness and over-crunchiness/dryness, whether toasted or not; about woeful lack of chewy substance under that crispy crust, but fact is - I'm not, I just know that these were far from the best bagels I've had. Plain cream cheese was not very good either, and was too plentiful for the amount of bagel. They have farmers cheese, which is a nice, unusual and tasty touch - a definite plus (if you never tried, beware that it's practically unsalted.) Coffee is typical barely drinkable $1+ crap, stay away if you are prone to heartburn - it will give you a particularly atrocious one.
