The Bagel Hole (aptly named) is a local, hole in the wall, delicious spot for a grab and go bagel. No frills, no toaster, just good bagels. There can be a line out the door of the teeny storefront on the weekends, but it tends to move quickly and I would say the bagels are worth the wait. Very affordable too! The bagels have a nice crispy crust, a nice chewy texture, and most impressively I think the flavor itself is very tasty. Good and salty! I love how salty the everything seasoning blend they use is. Worth noting - the bagels are on the smaller side. In the warm months there is a makeshift outdoor space to enjoy your bagel, but really it's a takeaway spot. I would recommend getting a bag of bagels to go and making a bagel sandwich yourself at home, especially if you like a toasted bagel. Definitely my favorite bagel spot in Park Slope, and one of my all-time favorites in the whole city! read more

The bagels are good. But sometimes I like to pick up Friday bagels to eat on Saturday...or buy them on Saturday to eat on Sunday, etc. Well, the last time I did that, it was super-hard the next day. I had to wet it & microwave it slightly (a little trick I read about - you get the bagel slightly wet and then microwave for 10 secs or more). Lived in Brooklyn for most of my life, and this is EXACTLY what a Brooklyn bagel shop, and a Brooklyn bagel, should be. There's a reason there's a line out the door every Sunday morning. This is the gold standard of bagels, bagel shops, bagel shop employee attitudes, bagel shop cleanliness. You want your bagel toasted? Do you go to the Louvre and ask if the Mona Lisa can be brightened up a little? Want service with a smile? I'm sure there's a Cheesecake Factory in Omaha that will oblige you. I've tried bagels from several places in NYC. Zabar's, which were surprisingly lame. Russ And Daughters, which were very good, but the wait is ridiculously long. Empire Bagels in the Bronx (see my review) which were excellent. Now, after hearing Bill Deblasio's assertion that these were best in NYC, I've tried The Bagel Hole. First, I'll say I toast my bagels and I don't care who doesn't approve. I'm from South Jersey, not NYC. So these bagels lived up to the hype. I've heard some reviewers kvetch that they're small, but they're not that small. They toast up beautifully and have a great texture. A little bit of chew, a little crunch from the toasting. Perfect. They're great with a smear or for a breakfast bagel sandwich. I followed the advice of another yelp reviewer and got the Garlic And Herb spread. It was great. Just like the reviewer said, very garlicky. In conclusion, Bagel Hole in Brooklyn and Empire Bagels in the Bronx are the two best bagels I've had in NYC. read more

Everything a good New York bagel should be. Chewy with a great crust, hot out the oven & no need for toasting - the Bagel Hole is a big fat yes. There's always 11 varieties streaming fresh out the oven, but I recommend going with the classic egg bagel, cream cheese, & lox. And don't toast it, for god's sake. It's already perfect in its natural, doughy-chewy state! Don't be turned off by Bagel Hole's unsuspecting store front, which probably hasn't changed much in the 30 years it's been open. Why 3.5 star? Well I have to agree with some of the reviews. Bagel is tiny for NYC standard. I bet whoever roll it has a tiny hand too. I finish the bagel in like 4 to 6 bites not half but the whole damn thing with cream cheese and . Serious get someone with a bigger hand or bigger machine. Bagel with cream cheese and a coffee will cost around $5 or less. This is about the cheapest you can go. Bagel is a cold which I hope was freshly made that day. I am pretty sure it is because they are selling bagel at $90 a piece or $1 for 4 or something if they are like a day old. I wouldn't try anything else and I honestly think they should cut out the salad and other item off their menu. Try something new instead. The place is tiny. It forms exactly one line in and one line out. After placing an order, you should go wait outside and come in after 5 minutes to pick up. This is run by a young group of men and I appreciate their hard work. A bright lighting and refined menu will really lift this place up a lot. Check out the pictures for their menu and special. They use to be good. Like 30yrs ago. The bagels are the size of mini-bagels and the inside is a shit hole with roaches. Place hasn't been cleaned let alone renovated since they opened. I went a few years ago, back when I lived in the area. While the bagels were good, the attitude of the staff made me not want to go back. When I asked to have the bagel toasted, instead of saying something along the lines of "we unfortunately don't have a toaster in the store and we recommend for the best experience that our bagels be eaten as they are sold", the staff rudely replied--in a haughty and disdainful tone--"we don't toast our bagels." After that experience, I would always trek a little further to a different bagel place where I could get my bagels toasted and without a side of contempt. Grabbed some bagels from Bagel Hole on Saturday morning. A small and mighty bagel, which is exactly what I was looking for. Quality: Bagel Hole is one of the more polarizing bagel shops in NYC, but I honestly thought they nailed it. Coming in it is important to first know four things, it is cash only, the bagels are smaller, the menu is confusing, and they don't toast the bagel. So bring cash, order extra, think about what you want first, and rethink how you eat fresh bagels. The bagels themselves are boiled, and have a significant shell. It is tough on the outside, which is great when you prefer them to remain fresh. The cream cheese is solid, really slathered on, so a high cream cheese ratio. Big chunks of scallion in the flavored cream cheese and the lox is better than it looks in the display. The Everything bagel is a little heavy on salt, so keep that in mind with the other items you add on. I ordered a Plain Bagel With Plain Cream Cheese, an Everything Bagel With Lox & Cream Cheese, and an Everything Bagel With Scallion Cream Cheese, and while there was no bad item, that is the order of my preference. Quantity: People may be up and arms about the smaller size bagel, but they are cheaper so order extra. Value: $2.25 for a Plain Cream Cheese Bagel. $3.75 for a Scallion Cream Cheese Bagel. $9.00 for a Lox & Cream Cheese Bagel. Ambiance: Bagel Hole is literally just a hole in the wall in Park Slope Brooklyn. Enough space for two people at the counter and one person to squeeze inside behind them. A refrigerator with a few cream cheese and drink options on the right, and rest of the space is for the staff. A few signs hang overhead, but they don't have a ton of helpful information, better to check menu online ahead of time. And on a hot day it was sweltering inside. Also, no seating inside or out, so have a plan of where you will be enjoying your bagels. Crowd: There was a constant line of four or five people on Saturday morning. They are quick behind the counter, so it moves fast. Service: The staff expects you to come in ready to order and with cash. Parking: Street parking throughout the area. read more

Life often imitates art, and recently my life has taken on the plot of a Seinfeld episode. After spending all of last Saturday going around to the library and several stores trying to print out a Groupon for the Bagel Hole which entitled me to a dozen bagels and 1/2 lb of cream cheese, and which expired the next day--Sunday--I arrived at The Bagel Hole [in the Wall] the next day, waited on a long line out the door, and was informed by extremely rude counter people that no Groupons were being accepted that day but that I could come back the following day (Monday) to use the Groupon. The store had extended the Groupon expiration date, though not through the following weekend. It is common sense that most people only have use for a dozen bagels on a weekend. Moreover, the fact that the store was unprepared for people to be redeeming these Groupons on a weekend reveals very poor planning. I had been planning to bring the dozen bagels and cream cheese to a marathon-watching brunch in the Slope, and I had absolutely no use for a dozen bagels on a Monday on the way to work. I was informed that the manager would be back in "five minutes," when I asked to speak to him, but I actually waited much longer than that. When the manager finally got there, I told him that his business chose to offer a promotion through Groupon, that I purchased this deal, and that the Bagel Hole had to make good on the deal that day per the terms of the deal. The manager begrudgingly let me have the dozen bagels I was entitled to but told me they were all out of cream cheese, so I could not have the remaining part of the goods the deal entitled me to. This was both untrue, as I saw cream cheese in the case, as well as annoying to the brunch guests, because who wants to eat a dry bagel? After this experience, I will no longer be a patron of this shop. I never thought these bagels came close to earning the #1 in New York award. I would sooner walk the length of Prospect Park over to the 2/3 trains, even with bad weekend service, and go all the way up to Absolute Bagels on 108th and Broadway for the best bagel in New York (served by friendly counter people and a very nice owner/manager) than come back here and deal with such rude staff and unsavvy business people. read more

The bagel doesn't have the bottom side, so it's like you took 2 bagels sliced it in half and took the top side of the two and made a new bagel. It's just too much bagel for me. 3.5 stars is right for this place, as it wavers between 4.5 and 3 stars. If you come at the right time, usually a weekend morning, the bagels are hot and fresh and amazing. If you come at the wrong time - later in the afternoon - the bagels taste almost stale, are hard to chew and just aren't that good. The rotating cast of teenage boys that works at this bagel place doesn't help either as they have 0 customer service skills, seem like they are asleep half the time and couldn't care less that you are a customer there. It also looks super dingy and not clean. However, on occasion I've had an incredible bagel there that was worth all the above. I have not found a better place in the neighborhood either. read more
