Having grown up in the 718, whenever I'm in NY, I usually don't venture into Manhattan since I've done most of the touristy stuff and stay in Brooklyn to hang out with family. But one thing I ALWAYS gotta do is have a NY bagel. I've lived in the DC Metro area for over 20 years, and I still can't find a shop to get an even half decent bagel; and don't get me started on "pizza" which usually runs the gamut of mediocre to abysmal. I think the difference really does come down to "the water," as New Yorkers jokingly often cite as the reason baked goods taste better. The water in the DC area has a strong chlorine after taste and leaves a "heavy" almost metallic mouth feel. By contrast, the water out of the tap in Brooklyn almost has an "effervescent" quality where it bubbles momentarily and it has a clean light finish. Regardless of what is the secret sauce, H&L Bagels serves some of the best (definitely the best in Bay Ridge) bagels in all of Brooklyn. A quick Yelp search will return many more well-known bagel joints, but I prefer smaller neighborhood gems like H&L. To me, this place is a combo of part bodega and part bagel bakery. Walk into the narrow store, and the front part has a deli case with the usual assortment of cold cuts, cheese, and prepared salads. But then as you get closer to the back, that's where the good stuff is located: the bagels. There are an assortment of flavors, but whenever I'm in town, I gotta go with the sesame, onion, and everything bagels. And what makes these so good is the slightly crunchy exterior with a pillowy soft chewy interior. And you know these are all hand rolled, water boiled, and then baked as all of the bagels have an irregular shape with some being more round or elongated; but I'll take hand made over supermarket mass produced any day. This place is take out (and cash) only, so after I get back to my brother's place, I smear on a light coating of butter or cream cheese, and it's like I'm 10 years old again. On my most recent trip, I took back a dozen bagels with me to Virginia, and can I tell you that even after 6 days of the bagels remaining out on the kitchen counter in a paper bag, they stayed fresh and just needed a few minutes in the toaster for revival. Try that with any super market or Costco bagels, cuz after 3 days, those kinds have the consistency of hockey pucks. And (as of this review) at $1.15/bagel, that is a steal for this quality item. Unless you have family in the area or are passing through to Staten Island, you typically aren't going to be in this section of Bay Ridge. But if you happen to find yourself near H&L Bagels, stop in and grab a 1/2 dozen...you'll thank me for it later. read more

H & L is one of those decent bagel stores that'll get the job done when it comes to your breakfast. Isn't the best bagel I had but certainly wasn't the worst. For me it was just a bit too crisp for a bagel. Maybe it was baked too long after boiling? The place is old school and the workers are definitely friendly here. You're also able to see the entire baking process in the back while you wait on your order. Long lines around 8am means this place has a following. Not the best but defining not the worst. read more

Best bagels in Bay Ridge but loosing its way. The owner is having trouble attracting workers so his lines are insane. He is in a war with himself to keep prices low but can't hire enough workers because he dosen't want to pay enough to attract more employee's. He has lost control of the place and walks away when it gets out of control, which is a daily event! read more

First, I've been frequenting H & L for nearly a decade now. My apologies for not writing a review sooner. Pricing is extremely reasonable, sandwiches are delicious (and large!), bagels are the best in the city, and I'll die on that hill. All that AND the staff is absolutely incredible and fast, and the place is always packed. I also want to say that the turnover rate for staff seems to be damn-near zero (same staff this whole time), and that's got to say something awesome about the place and the team! Kudos! As I sit and cobble this one together I am surprised that its taken me this long to do a Yelp narrative considering just how long I've been a patron of H&L Bagels. Now truth be told, over the years its generally my practice to only get their awesome bagels but on occasion I grab a breakfast sandwich or one of their deli sandwiches. Happily I can say that everything that I've ever had here was tasty and devoured to the max. I used to live around the corner from the place, but over the years have moved a few blocks away and I mention this because there are other bagel stores close to the two apartments I've lived in since that original time and I still will find myself walking over to H&L to get what I need. Now some folks have reported that its a busy place and yes that is true. The aisle to get to the counter is narrow and on one side is the glass displays and their preparation space while on the other is the refrigerators with the assorted sodas, milks and juices. In the front of the space there is a small counter where one can sip a coffee and eat something but its not spacious at all yet good in a pinch if you think you only need five minutes to do that before getting on with your day. My standard order is a dozen bagels and I usually split this between the everything bagel and the garlic ones. I used to love poppyseed and sesame seed ones, but leaned towards the everything ones some time ago and rarely look back. Every so often I will buy a couple of salt bagels and eat them as if they were a pretzel. Great place and should be supported. read more

this place is usually busy. The flow pattern isnt great with one big line forming and usually the 2 workers helping out the customers. It is certainly a typical ny bagel shop. They have the different cream cheeses, different spreads, chicken salad, egg salad etc. All look pretty good and Look forward to trying the chicken salad since it looked especially good. I ordered an egg sandwich and a bagel with cream cheese. I had high hopes based on my experience but I left underwhelmed. The prices are right but the bagels did not meet the high ny standards. Dont get me wrong they werent bad but they were missing that bit of flavor/texture that only comes from the best bagel shops. After living in bay ridge nearly a year I always overlooked this place, but its definitely a useful find. THe bagels are basic Brooklyn, they will satisfy. It is cheaper than other places in the area and has a large variety of bagels. They have pumpernickel and whole wheat varieties made in everything or sesame which I have not seen before. They also have mini bagels with the same assortment of choices. Where they fall short is in cream cheese choices because they didn't have low fat so I am sure there are no fruit favors or fancy tofu varieties. Great bagels that are consistent and taste exactly as you would expect. They always have what I ask for unlike other places in the area. Line may seem long when you walk in only because the place is small. Line moves quickly and I've never been in there for more than five minutes when getting bagels.
