My wife and I love to try out different Japanese/ramen spots around the area and, so far, Kontentsu has been our favorite. We try to come once a month to enjoy their delicious spicy tonkotsu ramen, spicy gyoza's and chicken karaage. The service is excellent. At least, for us. No matter who you get as your waiter/waitress, they will always treat you with respect and make sure that everything is to our liking without behaving in an exaggerating manner. How busy it gets in the restaurant truly depends on what time of day you are there. We like to go right after they reopen from the middle of the day, and we tend to experience a calm atmosphere as things get going once again for the evening rush. Our family came on a Wednesday evening, where we enjoyed the Baked Salmon roll ($17) a decent, slightly heavy cooked roll with a sweet hoisin sauce, the signature Kontentsu roll ($17) a (quite) spicy tuna roll with yet more tuna on top, and the delectable Crunch Albacore roll ($17), a crab and shrimp filled roll with seared albacore and crunchy onions on top. This final roll was unique, delicious, not too heavy, and bursting with flavor, with the crunchy onions contrasting markedly against the delicate sushi on top - a must try. Our children shared a Tonkotsu Ramen, which was good but nothing exceptional. The service was very friendly and accommodating, even for our quite dynamic children, where we were seated readily and cared for throughout the evening. The inside is cozy, clean, and unassuming. Prices, listed above, were fairly standard for food of this quality. At the end of the visit, I liked Kontentsu. With the exception of the Crunch Albacore roll, it was good but not extraordinary, but perhaps that is what Japanese cuisine is meant to be: quality, reliable, and understated. This is our second time at Kontetsu and enjoyed our food. We came right when they opened so got seated right away. By the time we left more people came so this place gets packed and busy. The place is simple but the chandelier made of strainers was cool. The food is pretty solid and delicious except for the side of pork belly that I got. It was over grilled and dry.. felt like it's not freshly made just reheated. I wasn't impressed with the service. We were the first to come in to restaurant, but my daughter got her food last. When I asked the waitress about my daughter's food and roll, she seemed overwhelmed and upset. The restaurant also didn't have kid friendly options. The spicy ramen was good but nothing incredible unfortunately, it wasn't spicy enough compared to most places but that's not the problem the problem was the flavor. The curry was good, but nothing particularly special and I think I would have preferred katsu chicken with the curry, or at least for the karaage chicken to be a bit crispier. We came across Kontentsu and decided to give them a try. We had a hard time finding them at first, not realizing that they are on the upstairs floor. There was plenty of free parking in the public space, so that was not an issue at all. We came here for two things and two things only: edamame and tonkotsu ramen. I ordered a regular meal and asked for extra noodles ($2.50 additional) which made it into a perfect meal to share with my son. He insisted we get corn and extra seaweed as well. My son LOVED it! He kept giving thumbs up and saying it's a 5-star rating, and chowed it down relatively fast (impressive for a child that usually eats extremely slowly). He's also had quite a lot of ramen, and also had some delicious meals in Japan, so I was pleased that he liked his meal. Service was friendly, fast, and we got served right away. Do not go here--especially if you have a disability or rely on a service dog. I had an awful experience, and it sent my stress and anxiety levels through the roof. The manager clearly disliked animals and completely ignored the law regarding service dogs. When I arrived with my service dog, he demanded to see a "certificate." I explained that legitimate service dogs don't have or need certificates--federal law only allows businesses to ask what tasks the dog performs. He then said my dog "doesn't look like a service dog," and when I tried to clarify, he began yelling and claiming he was a "specialist" who trains service dogs. Not only was that false and unprofessional--it's illegal to impersonate a professional in that field. It was one of the most hostile, humiliating experiences I've ever had in hospitality. One of my roommates mentioned how she used to work here and how her and her bf were gonna have dinner here, so my other roomie and I tagged along. The restaurant is beautifully done, and very creatively done as well, from the cherry blossom tree in the back and neon signs to the ramen strainer chandelier, the ambiance here is amazing! Great music too! I tried the tuna crips for appetizers and it was good, very unique profile of flavors, you get some sweet with a bit of a punch from ginger and still the savory taste of soy sauce. For a drink I got one of their sakes, it was very strong, but also tasty. I ordered the Karage Chicken Curry Don with extra chicken and wow... I was in heaven! The thick, creamy curry was perfectly buttery and salty with that strong classic curry flavor, paired with the crispy chicken Karage it was to die for! I also tried some of my friends pork chashu don and it was soooo good, the pork was perfectly tender and soaked up all the flavors! Service was exceptional! Montrose Glendale has a beautiful gem resting right outside of downtown. This is hands down the best ramen I have ever had in my life. The flavor is rich and creamy. Th noodles hand made and truly a work of art. The spicy miso ramen is a beautiful combination with some f creamy broth and spicy chili oil. The cilantro compliments the soups so well. This was my first experience trying a ramen noodle restaurant. This restaurant is not good for grandparents! We only went there because of my granddaughter's birthday thinking we could find something on the menu to our liking. Since I don't like pork, I thought I would try the teriyaki chicken. It was awful! Mainly, the chicken was still pink inside and undercooked. It was super bland. I kept trying to find some enough-cooked pieces in my bowl, but there were none. The broccoli was barely cooked all. It was hard, crunchy and plain with no flavor. Only the rice was tolerable and was okay with added soy sauce. My granddaughter's taste in her spicy ramen soup was to her liking, so if that's what you're looking for, they have it here. Otherwise, everything else was terrible! My husband ordered curry chicken, but the chicken was fried, which I didn't want, but he said it was cooked okay. They also do not serve any dry wine, just Saki, beer, and plum wine, so I ordered iced tea instead. I would rather have eaten a banana for dinner and had a better time than eating here at this restaurant. It's only for millennials, Gen Z, Gen Alpha, etc. who are having fun with their crowd.
