That line is not to enter the market place. It's for HOLBOX. Onto the food! The menu is short. We ordered a few items to try. I can only tell you we enjoyed two items the most. Flora De Calabaz and Tacos Costilla. (Check out the photos) Both delicious. The rest are just okay IMO. It's open seating. You pay, get a number and find a seat. I'm surprised but am with no doubts that the best tortilla that I have ever had is here. The quesadilla guisado is excellent, contains high quality cheese, and truly highlights the beauty and deliciousness of their tortilla. The molotes de platano was a highlight dish. The plantain balls were savory sweet, fluffy, slightly crispy and were sitting in a bath that reflected the sweet and savory categories, then contrasted with silky, smooth, complex flavors. We visited Mercado La Paloma to eat at Holbox. However, being a Saturday the line was all the way to the DMV. So we decided to try Komal as neither of us had been there. We ordered the Molotes de Platano, Tlacoyos, Tacos Sonia, Milpa Salad, & Quesadilla de Huitlacoche. I really liked the Milpa salad and the quesadilla. We weren't crazy about the Tlacoyos. They seem somewhat heavy and stodgy. Overall, I found it very tasty and authentic. We also ordered Agua Fresca and I like the fact that it wasn't as sweet as some other vendors make them. Komal more than lived up to its hype. They have huge bins of the heirloom corn they use and you can see the heirloom Ayocote beans as well. The tortillas are other worldly--the stretch and the bite, it smells like fresh breakfast. Been following Komal on Instagram for awhile and was happy to finally try them! Been chasing a high from the street food in CDMX and this definitely scratches the itch. Tried the squash blossom and corn quesadilla and the taco sonia. Love these beautiful corn tortillas but felt like they were a bit stingy with the salsa. Taco sonia was pretty big and difficult for me to eat (like I definitely needed a fork and knife). I liked the quesadilla more than the taco sonia and I really want to try them when they have huitlacoche (sometimes they announced on their Instagram). The nextdoor, Holbox is getting ridiculously busy lately. I've been going there since 2018 and Holbox was a special place for me for a long time. Now that I'm getting older, I don't have the same patience to wait in line to get the food I use to get so quickly. hahaha I'm happy for Holbox's great success tho. Anyway that's the reason I decided to try Komal one day. Don't get me wrong. I still love Komal but I am not excited about the inconsistency of the dish I like. I always order the same taco, "Taco Sonia". The first few times were absolutely amazing. I wanted to go back and eat it again and again. But then the taco was very salty a few times. And another time, it got too soggy with the sauce. I want to have the same "wow" experience like the first time but it hasn't been the same. I hope Taco Sonia will taste good again. p.s. What a gem! This is a stall in Mercado la Paloma. On the weekend, there is free parking in the rear, because they use the DMV parking lot. Don't be scared off by the line outside the door. That's for the fish joint. Instead, walk past that and go to the right. There, you will find friendly staff where you order at the counter and then find a table. Every dish here we had was fantastic. Komal is putting out some great food. I recently tried a chicken tinga sope made with blue corn masa. It was so tasty and filling. A great balance of flavor. I recommend you try it. This is a casual setting with other restaurants sharing the same space and tables. So you can try something from the other great restaurants in this center. It wasn't perfect, but it was perfectly delicious! I tried the tlacoyos and Taco Sonia, and both were packed with flavor. The tlacoyo was even more flavorful than the street version I've had in Mexico City. However, it was a bit tricky to eat by hand, as the masa didn't hold together well--it fell apart quickly. Komal's take on the dish feels more refined, ideal for eating with a knife and fork. It's beautifully plated and full of flavor. The Taco Sonia, while incredibly flavorful, could benefit from a slight tweak in plating and preparation. The blue corn tortillas couldn't quite hold up against the wet filling, causing them to disintegrate when folded, turning into a bit of a mess. My suggestion: serve the meat filling separately with the tortillas on the side, allowing guests to assemble smaller tacos with the option of adding salsa or other wet ingredients on the side. The tortilla could also be made a bit sturdier to withstand folding and the journey to the customer. This taco is definitely not suited for takeout in its current form--perhaps making them smaller or lighter would help. It's not quite there yet, but with a little tweaking, it could be perfect. That said, I wouldn't be surprised if Komal earns a Michelin Bib Gourmand one day, and I could see them expanding with a concept similar to Xokol in Guadalajara. I can easily overlook the slight tortilla mishap because the flavors were absolutely out of this world. Bravo to Team Komal for delivering some of the most tasty and elevated Mexican food in Los Angeles. The service at the register and food delivery was also fantastic--smiles all around, and they were super patient with me. Go now. Then go again to try more dishes. It's that good. Okay there is a lot to unpack here and I want to give you the skinny. One, this is NOT Holbox light or whatever. I have been to Holbox and these two places are not at all similar. Komal is NOT Holbox nor does it try but what it does, it excels at. This food is simple clean and lovely. They make their own tortillas from blue masa right in front of you. They use Oaxacan cheese. The brisket tacos are wonderful and served simply with onions and cilantro with a nice salsa. There is no squid ink here. There are simple/home flavors made with care and love. The next thing was the black mole. I LOVE black mole, and this is the best I have found so far in LA. The squash blossom quesadilla is wonderful and sweet corn gives it a surprising pop. But this food is more Oaxacan than new wave fusion tacos you are being inundated with around town. But if you want simple excellent crafted classic food, this is the place. Enjoy. read more

Went to try Komal today for the first time. I was super excited. I've been waiting for the place to open for some time. I would check in on the progress during my visits to Holbox. and when I seen the reviews after they opened I was even more excited. The food was good really good I ordered quite a few items off the menu since it was my first time But before leaving when I realized I was missing something that I ordered and verified that indeed it was paid for they didn't offer me a refund nor did they offer to make me my missing item. The girls at the front counter seemed confused and were nervous and proceeded to tell me I received all my food. I would remember everything I ate and if I say I didn't receive it then they should honor that. It was not a small order mistakes happen. They checked with someone in the back a couple of times but whomever is making the decisions back there said no that it was their wired against mine. The fact that they dismissed me left me feeling robbed. Needless to say I won't be going back just on principle alone. Wish them the best but I hope they figure out their customer service. I still Proceeded to order masa and a dessert to go. Just very saddened by the whole experience. I haven't tried the masa yet but will be attempting to make tortillas soon. Busy weekend. LAFC v. Internet Miami. Could understand the waiting time, but It took 40 mins to get our food to go( tacos and a hongo quesadilla) because they gave our order to someone else. My boyfriend was standing in front and watched them give it to someone else who was holding an order number which is only given to people eating there. We ordered Togo and they didn't give us a number. Just asked for a name. So why give a Togo order to someone holding an order number. Food was good but my quesadilla wasn't that warm, as they had to remake the tacos so my quesadilla was just sitting there. Stepped by Mercado de Paloma over the weekend with the fam. Tried Komal for the first time and wow. The tylacoyos, flor de calabaza quesadilla, and the guisado quesadilla were all fantastic. I'm a sucker for the blue tortillas and Oaxacan cheese!!! The guisado had some pork in it which was delicious. I also loved the sides of salsa. We were exact to try Komal after having heard so much. There was a giant line outside for Holbox outside - but we made our way in to a much shorter line at Komal. We tried a number of things, some better than others. The molotes were yummy and the chuchito as well. The taco Sonia was not that flavorful and it came with no salsa which was probably (hopefully) just an oversight. The tlayocos were great and the corn and bean salad was amazing. We finished with the pan de calabaza which was just ok. Wanted to love it - but like was all I can truthfully say.
