Why did we come here? Well, we were looking for lunch and most places were closed by 2PM in preparation for dinner service and we were waiting until 2:30PM for a reservation at a nearby spot. The ice cream looked interesting, in particular the shaka-boom; think of a taiyaki but in the shape of a Hawaiian hand symbol. I customized mine to include a pineapple and vanilla soft serve, matcha powder, li-hing mui powder (preserved plum), and coconut cream. I've been wanting to try this place for years after seeing their cute shaka waffles. I finally made it a point to stop by on a Saturday afternoon. Located in the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center, parking was a bit of a struggle since the lot was pretty packed. They're a Japanese inspired dessert shop so they have mochi waffle pops, drinks and they're famous shaka booms! It's basically like taiyaki, but instead of a fish shape, it's a shaka. You get to choose your filing for the shaka, soft serve flavor and two free toppings. I got our shaka filled with haupia with dole whip soft serve topped with lihing powder and fruity pebbles. You can't beat the pineapple and lihing combination and the shaka waffle was nice and crispy with the creamy haupia filling. The worker did such a good job making it look super cute. I was also worried about the portion, but I didn't realize they not only add soft serve in the cup, but soft serve on top the shaka as well. The dole whip was fantastic I had the mango pineapple swirl. If you need a dole whip fix without having to go to the dole plantation this is the place for you. I am from Long Beach so I had always thought the only place where you could find dole whip would be at disneyland at the Tiki Juice bar but I couldn't be more wrong. Located on the second floor of the Royal Hawaiian Center, you'll find Kokoro Cafe. A small counter operating dessert shop on the corner inside of the Pa'ina Lanai Food Court. The funny story is that I've wanted to check them out after seeing pictures of their Shaka-Boom years ago but never got around to it (I still haven't tried it yet). Kokoro Cafe caught my eye with its simple yet extensive unique dessert menu. They offer their famous Shaka-Boom as well as soft serve, floats, drinks, and Mochi-Pop. For their desserts, you're able to customize your own or choose from their set menu. Since I was somewhat full from dinner and had never seen a Mochi-Pop before I had to try one! I opted for the Paradise Dreams Mochi-Pop which came with Haupia Cream, Coconut Flakes, and Passionfruit Sauce. The Mochi-Pop is relatively small and served on a popsicle stick on a plate which I found necessary. The waffle came warm and was soft, chewy, and a bit flimsy. I needed to use a fork to cut and eat it so having the plate was perfect. It would've been nice if the waffle was a bit firmer. Aside from that, it was packed with shredded coconuts and a delicious sweet, tangy, and flavorful passionfruit sauce. Although a bit sweet, I found it to be the perfect amount! My friend got their Oreo Sundae which was a daily special. I had a bite and it wasn't anything special--just vanilla ice cream and crushed Oreos. The small cafe is popular and the workers do a good job managing the crowds. Considering the desserts are made to order, service was relatively fast and friendly. They also validate parking if you park at the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center parking garage. Everything looked delicious on their menu and I love that the combinations are endless for their desserts. It's a little pricey for what you get but super tasty! I'd be interested in coming back to try their other Mochi-Pop flavors as well as their Dole Whip since it's dairy free! read more

Update: 10/23/22 The Dole Whip served at Kokoro Cafe is deliciously refreshing and spot on to the Dole plantation's Dole Whip. The difference is the cost for a small cup is $4 and a large cup $8. The price is pretty steep for this dessert. So when you realize that they serve the Dole Whip with a very large hollow center (see pic), you'll feel pretty ripped off (-2). The explanation the worker and manager gave is that the only way you can get the swirl presentation is you have to start the swirl around the edge and work your way up to give it the swirl shape. That being said, as many of us have experienced getting soft served ice cream from a machine at a buffet restaurant is that you can start the swirl from the center and work your way around the edges and and repeat for the perfect volume and swirl shape. Why can't the workers at Kokoro cafe do the same since the price is so expensive for what you get? The manager was understanding when I about my concerns and offered a small ice cream to make up for the large hollow center (+1). I've had the Dole Whip Float in the past here at Kokoro and it was very good and refreshing. The hollowness in the center was present but not as large volume as I saw today. If your concerns are similar to mine, then avoid ordering the Dole Whip or any other soft serve desserts. They have other desserts to choose from including ice cream. read more

What a cute ice cream shop! Soft serve is my preference so Kokomo Cafe is always a stop when I'm in Waikiki. Located on the top floor of the Royal Hawaiian Center, it's always crowded!
