What started off as a pop-up that sold sherbet in pints - Mr. Asato has finally opened his first dine-in experience. The shave ice omakase needs reservations made online in order to be seated. I never made a reservation so I opted for a mango orange sherbet (still delicious!). Would love to try the shave ice omakase which was just awarded the James Beard award on my next visit. Can never go wrong with Mr. Asato's sherbet. Definitely some of the best in Hawaii! I also recommend checking out if their truck is parked at any events! got to try asato's flavor lab/omakase experience during my trip to oahu and let's just start by saying reservations are extremely hard to get as there's only 4 seats and 2 time slots a day for the experience. i didn't take many pictures as i wanted to enjoy the experience there, but the lab starts out with a rainbow gummy in their lemon peel powder, which they offer you another piece if you liked it, that tasted like a tangy haribo gummy. next was a tasting of different pieces from their crackseed shop and an experiment with making your own lemon peel soda. the crackseed tasting pieces were quite small as they're predominantly candies/gummies coated in li hing or lemon peel powder and other dried/dehydrated pieces or suckseeds. the soda experiment was fun and had a unique lemon flavor. last but not least, probably the best part of the experience was their shave ice. the strawberry shortcake shave ice was my favorite as it had the fluffiest texture and different layers to the shave ice. the creme brûlée was shave ice was okay, very ice and the syrup was quite sweet/rich for my liking. the staff that did our experience was very sweet and the shop is actually located inside a clothes store so the ambiance was very casual. i personally would only do this experience once, especially for the price point and what you're actually getting. read more

We did a Waikiki staycation this weekend and finally got to have some real relaxation time so we decided to venture around Waikiki. Asato's happened to be super close to our hotel so we decided to go and check it out. I didn't realize they were in a store so at first we didn't really know where it was. But my boyfriend found it tucked away in the back of a cute surf shop (King's and Queen's Hawaii). I know their menu is a little different then their shop they had in Nu'uanu because I've seen pictures of shaved ice and fancier desserts but I didn't see that on their menu when we went and I didn't ask. So we settled for a scoop of green river each, and my boyfriend got his with lihing mui sauce on top. Honestly, can't go wrong with green river. I also got a package of the lihing pineapple gummies because they were calling my name. We'll have to come to try their flavor lab things but I'm glad we were able to find them so next time we go we know where to go. read more

Interesting, moderately overhyped and definitely overpriced. For the 4-course dessert tasting and the shave ice you need to make a reservation. They are located in the Hyatt Waikiki where the old Dylan's Candy Bar store was. Now it is a mixture of retail meets the sherbet and shave ice. For the omakase dessert 4-course you sit at the bar facing the pastry cooks. It starts with a small layered jello with dried lemon peel for dipping. Just ok, nothing special = 3/10. Then you receive a plate with tiny bites of local style crack seed and assorted gummy and fruit belts with li hing mui and lemon peel. It's literally one bite each. You receive a soda pop made table side that you can add sweetner or acid or salt to make your drink more suitable to your palate. Everything is very lemon peel (dried salted lemon) or li hing mui (dried salted plum) pronounced = 4/10. You can literally buy bags of these things at any sundry or convenience store on island. They serve you some kind of tea, it was brown. Then for the last 2 courses you receive a massive shaved ice with toppings; strawberry crunch with pound cake and homemade cool whip frosting. That was good, huge, had nice flavor, was subtle and the addition of the cream and cake and crunch on top made it enjoyable = 8/10. Final course is the creme brulee macadamia nut shaved ice topped with creme brulee and a strong macadamia nut syrup flavor. It was smoky, nutty, sweet and unique = 9/10. The entire experience is $58 per person and does not include tip. Realistically this is very expensive but we did leave full and felt like it was worth closer to $25-30 range. A lot of local flavors and not your traditional dessert stop. There's a good amount of salty notes. The limited seating and limited availability makes it seem like a really special sought after experience. (Good marketing tactics)! read more

I went in thinking it would be more like traditional shave ice, but the texture was actually closer to a sherbet or frozen dessert, which turned out to be perfectly refreshing in the Waikiki heat. The flavors were great and tasted vibrant without being overly heavy or artificial. One thing to know is that it's tucked away in the back corner of another store, so it can be a little easy to miss if you are not paying attention. I'm more of an ice cream girl than sorbet/sherbet but I do have to say I was super impressed by Asato's! The shop is a quick walk away from International Marketplace (where my friends and I parked). We tried to all get different flavors so we could try as many as possible! The flavors we got ranked in best order were Passion Orange Guava, Strawberry, Pineapple then Passion Orange. I thought the passion orange guava had a really strong flavor in a good way, and you can't really go wrong with strawberry and pineapple. The passion orange was a little disappointing (the flavor was still good but when you compared them to the others it was a little more bland). FAVE FOOD EXPERIENCE! What an amazing food experience on our honeymoon! The girlies were so sweet and a joy to chat with throughout the experience. You really can tell they enjoy what they do and are so proud of the shaved ice lab they have started up with the owner! It is located inside the clothing store, but it is very intimate as I believe there are only four seats. In this case my husband and I were the only ones and it was so sweet of the girls to be so accommodating and chatting with us. As for the shaved ices, AMAZING. We got to try three! My favorite is the crème brûlée cause of the caramelized sugar texture while my husband's is the strawberry lilikoi since it had little cake chunks. Learned about Asato's Waikiki through some Instagram post. If you enter through the street side, you have to walk to the back corner for Asato's. It's a pretty simple area with a couple of counters and simple flavors. We got three to try and they were all delicious. There was no one there when we went and I don't know if that was a fluke, but we walked up, ordered 3 different scoops. The consistency was really good and the flavors were outstanding. It's inside the clothing store, so just make sure you don't look for a stand alone ice cream shop. Asatos is definitely a local favorite and I appreciate that I was able to sample their offerings at the Hyatt. On a hot Sunday afternoon their frozen offerings hit the spot. It's a little difficult to find as the dessert bar is located within a store. It was not busy at all. The store surrounding the dessert bar was almost sterile. It was fun to see that Asato offered all these li hing flavored gummies besides the ice cream. At the counter the servers were okay...not especially friendly but not mean either...just there. We ordered 4 different types of sherbet: coffee, mango, pineapple and strawberry. Everything was good. The sherbet was on the lighter side and hit the spot. You don't feel too heavy after consuming all the dessert. It was just right. There are nice benches in the hotel to enjoy your dessert. I read an article recently about the shop which highlighted the local flavors they make, and took note of their li hing flavor as my friend loves all things li hing. Omakase, but make it dessert! Asato's was such a fun and unique experience and the perfect start to our vacation in Hawai'i. We booked our reservation for the Flavor Lab Tasting Experience a week in advance. Actually, they only take reservations a week in advance. We were watching OpenTable like hawks, waiting for the reservation time to open and snatched it up in a matter of seconds heh heh heh... Asato's is located inside the Kings and Queens store in the Pualeilani Atrium Shops. They offer validated parking at the Hyatt Regency with a $25 purchase. We arrived about 10 minutes before our 2pm reservation time and were immediately seated at their counter. The counter sits only four people, which explains why reservations were hard to get. The shop itself only takes up a small corner of the Kings and Queens souvenir shop, so seating is limited. If this is on your list, you'd better have quick fingers on OpenTable. If you're unable to snag a spot for the Flavor Lab, you can still walk in to buy their candy, sherbets, and sorbets. The first course of the Flavor Lab tasting experience was a gummy bear jello served with lemon peel. This jello was made by melting down gummy bears and letting them coagulate into colored layers. It reminded me of the jellos from the dessert sections at Asian buffets. I thought it was a fun and creative way to showcase two of their candy products, gummy bears and dried lemon peel. Dipping the jello in the lemon peel gave it a nice tangy twist. They offer you a complimentary second jello if you'd like, which I gladly took. The second course was the "taste of the crack seed shop," which was a sampler platter of 15 different pieces of candy sold at their shop. The platter featured candy with regional Hawaiian flavors influenced by Chinese immigrants such as li hing mui and haw flakes. Most of the candies were served sprinkled with li hing powder which added a salty, tangy kick. My favorite was the lemon peel mango gummy bear. The third course was a lemon peel soda, served as an interactive flavor laboratory. We were given a base drink of club soda mixed with lemon peel syrup along with 4 dropper bottles containing simple syrup, saline solution, citric acid, and malic acid. The idea was to experiment with the different ingredients to see how they affect the flavor of our soda. This, by the way, was why I wanted to come. It was really fun playing with the droppers to customize our drinks. They even gave each of us a bottle of the lemon peel syrup along syrup to take home! And yes, each bottle was under 3 oz, so you can take it on your flight in your carry-on. The fourth course was shaved iced. Typically, each person would get to choose between the Li Hing Strawberry Crunch Cake Shaved Ice or the Crème Brûlée Shaved Ice with Macadamia Crunch. But since there were three of us, they gave us both as well as an experimental third flavor - Strawberry Purée with Sour Cream and Brown Sugar! Each flavor was so good, and the portions were huge! We were so full by the end of this experience. We could not agree on which flavor was the best and each had our own favorite. My personal favorite was the Strawberry Li Hing Crunch Cake. I really liked the play on the classic strawberry crunch cake popsicle and the unique twist from the li hing powder. The cubes of chiffon cake inside were so soft, fluffy, and delicious! I always love a crème brûlée moment as well - especially when they blowtorch it in front of you. And the Strawberry Purée, sour cream, and brown sugar combo was so new and cool! Our omakase master informed us that this combination was inspired by a treat that locals would have as children - dipping strawberries in sour cream and sprinkling them with brown sugar. I would liken the sensation to a tangy, sweetened Greek yogurt. It was not a combination I expected, but I found myself continuously scooping away at it! I had such a great time at Asato's. It felt like an experience that was unique to Hawaii that you couldn't get anywhere else. I loved learning about the local customs and how different cultures came together to make something new. This experience made our trip so special, and I highly recommend for others to come try! read more

Oooh! I totally love finding and trying different sweet and snack places close to work. My friend and I went on a short walk from the International Market Place to find Asato's Waikiki in the King & Queen's Store at the Hyatt. Totally worth it!! If it says it taste like strawberry, green River or passion orange, even the lemon peel gummy bear, it literally taste exactly like that item in sherbet consistency. I got the green river and the passion orange and both were amazing. The Passion Orange tasted just like the Hawaiian airline juice cups, but in sherbet form. Stopped by for some ice cream on the way back to your hotel. The location is not what I expected, inside the Kings and Queens clothing shop. Its a small ice cream joint with a few bar stools to sit at the countertop. Nevertheless the sherbet/sorbet flavors offered were traditional hawaiian flavors and are non-dairy treats. We tried the Ube and POG flavors and both were delicious. They also offer sample tastings to see what you like. Service was excellent and the 2 employees were nice. read more

Tiny space on the Waikiki strip with great sorbet flavors! Had the mango orange and lychee sorbets, really special!! I didn't get a chance to get the omakase but the sorbets were worth the visit! Quick service and refreshing spot to go to if you're in the Waikiki area! read more
