Finally, a Ramen joint in Ealing!! With a lunch menu that's of excellent price, you'll want to be…read moreheading straight here for your lunch break (especially when it's cold outside! Nothing like a bit of ramen to warm your belly up.) We were sat upstairs and brought water and menus. At first, I thought, what a cool small ramen spot - but no, there's a downstairs!!! There's actually loads of space! Do not be deceived if it's full upstairs, chances are there's seating downstairs. The lunch menu consists of any small ramen bowl on the menu and a side for £9.95. I chose the pork, ginger and garlic gyoza, which came to the table fresh from the kitchen. For mains, I chose the Miso mushroom ramen, which was absolutely delicious. There was a variety of mushrooms which topped the homemade noodles, accompanied with a seasoned egg, black kale, bamboo shoots and spring onions. The broth was made up of konbu and shiitake mushroom and was miso based. Delicious!! I had the option to upgrade to a large bowl for an extra £1.95, but it was rather filling! I would definitely come back again to try more from the menu; I've got my eye on the chilli chicken ramen for next time!

The noodles were done just right and weren't too chewy or undercooked or over cooked just done perfectly. Everything about this place felt very precise and impeccable like you'd expect in a real Japanese establishment in Tokyo. I had the pork, ginger and garlic gyoza to start and they were plump and juicy as advertised. I had the Tonkotsu ramen which comes with the delicious pork broth. It came with roast pork belly, bamboo shoots, bean sprouts, spring onions. Very filling and good value for the money. I will be back.

Successfully converted my girlfriend to the religion of Ramen! 5/5!…read more Arrived at 8pm without a reservation and it was pretty busy. Two other groups were waiting for tables. Always a good sign! Made a reservation for 8:45pm and went out for a drink. Make sure to make a reservation on Fridays! I ordered a Tokyo Tonkotsu (large with no extras) and a Kirin beer and my girlfriend ordered a Wakame Ramen (medium with extra pickled ginger) and a plum wine! The ramen was really really good. It looked like Jason Pollock splattered my t-shirt with Pork Bone broth afterwards! The large portion for more than enough (and we had just finished a long walk and we're starving). I would recommend adding extra pork but that's the only thing I would change. The extra pickled ginger also supposedly went really well with the Wakame (chicken) ramen. I will be coming back here soon and bringing the rest of the family!

Not bad for a random ramen spot on the English seaside…read more The Tokyo Tonkotsu bowl is less like the complex, thin broths at self-aware ramen shops across NYC and more like the hearty, no-frills ramen I had in Japan (e.g. Tenkaippin!) - so unctuous and flavorful that the broth is undrinkable at the end. I was expecting something more watery and clean-tasting from the vegetarian soy milk ramen. What came instead was thick and rich, nearly as heavy as the tonkotsu (minus all that salt). It had no soybean flavor, but I can see it being a holy grail for vegetarians who want to experience the luscious guilt of a fatty pork broth. I'm still conflicted (my palate wanted soy milk!) but it was certainly tasty. The karaage was not what I expected either. It's more a boneless tebasaki - fried chicken morsels given the Japanese chicken wing treatment, coated in a thin, sweet soy glaze. I liked it but was craving the typical, dry karaage fried lightly in starch. I do wish the bowls had been served hotter. They use thin noodles (apparently made in-house?!) and wanting to retain the noodle consistency is one excuse for serving a broth less than boiling hot, but the noodles got soggy quickly anyway. Manager and staff are friendly. Actual Japanese people come here willingly! 10% student discount helps with the £8 pricetag.

Finally. I've been waiting patiently for Masterchef winner Tim Anderson to open his restaurant…read more After many rumours, he has finally brought his Japanese fare to Brixton Described as a ramen and izakaya place, the menu is divided into 7 ramen, a burger, a rice dish and 9 small plates. There are noticeable elements of Caribbean cooking in some of the dishes I chose the kumamoto ramen, which most resembled my favourite tonkotsu. For me, ramen is about the broth. Here, there is the satisfying richness that comes from long, patient simmering of pork bones but it had an odd thick consistency, almost like a roux had been mixed in to thicken the mixture. A shame as the rest of the bowl was exemplary I had some goat curry tsukumen (dipping) curry. Nice hot curry. Not suitable for tsukumen A grapefruit shichimi salad was refreshing but the portion was small So want to love this place but can't help feeling that Japanese food, especially ramen has moved on in London

Nan, ban, thank you ma'am…read more Went into Nanban worrying that their vegetarian options were going to mug me off, like vegetarian options usually do. I was wrong though. Staff were friendly and the food came quickly. I also think the price was very decent considering the portion size and the quality of the food. I'll just do a quick run-through of the food I had: - Small plates: - Grapefruit Shichimi Salad - Grapefruity. Spicy. Decent. Yaki-Imo - Posh baked potato. Decent. Karashi Renkon Chips - Crisps out the packet. But decent. Large plate: - Mojiko Yaki-Curry - Delicious mess of rice, egg, Japanese curry sauce, melted cheese, and vegetables. Top notch. Only downside to the whole thing was - where's the soft-serve ice cream which they said they had on the online menu! Sort it out!

Round two was less impressive…read more We started with the kimchi and karaage. The kimchi was passable but the karaage was disappointing. The chicken came piping hot but the batter was bland and needed more seasoning and the chicken could have done with a marinade. We both ordered a veggie ramen, one spicy miso and the other spicy konbu. Both were a bit bland and could have done with more base flavour. The broth was watery and needed more of a boost. To top it all off, the beer was flat and even upon sending it back, another glass of the same draft beer came back. Service was slow and unhappy. Our waiter seemed on the other side of miserable. Cheer up! It can't be that bad. Unfortunately, a disappointing meal.

We decided not to travel into the city and instead find something to eat nearby. This place was about a mile from our flat and although has few reviews seemed promising, so we were on our way. We arrived around 9p and the place was packed! We were seated at the bar and ordered gyoza, beer, and three bowls of spicy tonkotsu. The gyoza was delicious and you could definitely tell that it was homemade. The ramen was delicious! The noodles were excellent and the broth was flavorful and the right amount of spice. The egg was pretty good, not the best I've had but still good. The portion sizes were perfect and we walked home with full bellies. The beer was delicious!

They…read moreprimarily make two things: okonomiyaki (a Japanese pancake street food with various fillings) or noodles, again with a variety of ingredients. The great thing about okonomiyaki is that you can choose what to put in it and this customisable element is what this restaurant loves. I went for their special which is seafood based and I loved it but you can plea around and create it the way you like it. I think the pancake is better than the noodles so get that and then a starter. I recommend the aubergine. The kagua beer is really good too and rare as it used to be only one guy making it in Japan and it has only recently been licensed to a Belgian brewery too. In general, the food is delicious and you should go try it out and the atmosphere feels very authentic, they even have Japanese music playing in the radio (which I ended up shazaming to find what they were). Go eat there... Go now...

Legit good Japanese izakaya-style place specializing in okonomiyaki. Overall all the food is solid…read moreif not spectacular but certainly better than you might expect in London. Even though your okonomiyaki options in London are limited, they're still strangely plentiful compared to the USA where the embrace of Japanese food culture is much more codified into life; it's still strange to me that during the last 30 years the Japanese cuisine that took off was sushi instead of ramen and all things izakaya. But here in the UK capital you have Abeno, which is good but takes itself a little too seriously for what is supposed to be the most casual and customer-focused of dishes (the translation is basically "as you want it"), and Jeux Jeux which is solidly meh. Okan sits right inbetween and feels as close as you can get to eating the famous dish in Osaka. I don't want to stretch that comparison too far but squint a bit and suddenly you might imagine for a moment you're eating in the middle of Shinsekai instead of Brixton. You can order your okonomiyaki as western as you like it (take out all that seafood, add the cheese!) and it'll still be just as delicious if you had ordered something closer to the spirit of the "nation's kitchen". Vibe is good, food is good, people are pleasant. Recommended!
