Let's cut straight to the point -- the food is good, but not the only choice for decently authentic ramen in the area (given the also newly opened Shogun), and I won't be going back because of the following issues: Extremely small portions. My tonkotsu ramen had one slice of stewed pork in it. Three is the standard, and I've never been served just one solitary slice in all my history of ramen escapades. But hey, maybe you're a petite eater and that doesn't bother you! So let's talk about the truly appalling service -- in fact, the worst service I have ever experienced at any restaurant. Everything was average at first, but as it came to the end of our meal, we were sitting there for 20 minutes desperately trying to get the waiter's attention as he just continually chatted with another patron (a friend I assume). He made eye contact with us several times but still, nothing! He just watched us as we got up to look at the menus posted on the window to check the prices, calculate our bill ourselves, and leave the money on the table so that we could finally leave. Ridiculous!

Hands down best kara-age I've ever had.

I've never professed to be a fan of ramen, but after checking out all the positive reviews and hearsay about goemon ramen, I decided to head down alone one afternoon and give it a try. Situated at the bottom of Preston Street (so many great food places here), Goemon is a 'blink and you'll miss it' type of establishment so keep your eyes peeled! Once you step inside it isn't anything remarkable looking, simple decor with relaxing classical music playing in the background. The member of staff who served me was attentive (but not overly so) and was happy to make a recommendation for an inexperienced ramen eater like me. I ended up having the pork tonkotsu with a side of tori kara age. I LOVE tori kara age and the one here is the best I have ever tasted. Ever! The ramen dish itself was incredible, so rich and full of flavour. I couldn't actually eat it all, and that's not a bad thing, I just wasn't expecting it to be so rich in flavour. I noticed on Ketan's review you could add double the noodles for £1 but I didn't bother. I'd definitely recommend giving this place a go.

Amazing Raman and a glimpse of Japan in Brighton! I think most people know Preston Road as the Main Street for Asian cuisine but Goemon brings it together! Food is cooked and served within a good time slot, smells good each time and never fails to fill our appetite! The price is suitable to the size fishes and broth variations you can get, so it's a win for both. My only concern is the lack of spacing as it can get popular in the restaurant. Would recommend if you love ramen and Japanese food for sure! We ordered the Tonkatsu and Tokyo Ramen!

Cannot fault this restaurant. Hands down my favourite place to eat ever. Tokyo tonkustsu is a dream. Lovely staff. Very reasonably priced. Highly highly recommend!!

E-Kagen serves the other thing - the big, robust unsubtle Japanese food that fills you up and isn't nearly so polite about it. As such, despite being older, it is still among the more exciting places to eat Japanese food in Brighton. Wonderfully cheap, the ramen has punch, depth and comes beaded with soul-nourishing grease. I'm obsessed with Kimchi and the Kimchi ramen is orientalist soul food: hot, filling, spicy and with half a boiled egg in it. The perfect Sunday breakfast with the second best people watching in North Laine. Don't bother with the Sushi - I'm sure it's fine, but it feels like a necessary addition to a menu forced to court expectations - go for a proper hot meal and leave stuffed and happy.

I love their age-tofu, their kimchi ramen, and their katsu curry with egg. Their ramen is really standout, very fair pricing and fresh. Their sushi is good quality, some of the best quality you can get in Brighton, but portions are SMALL. If you are hungry or a big eater, be prepared to shell out lots of ££ if you're there for sushi. Problems - their weird and ever-changing opening hours. I feel like they change them all the time! I feel like I can never plan to go there because I'm not sure it will be open. Service - is friendly, but sporadic. I mean waiting forever to get tap waters, having to ask for share plates and the server being confused, and the last time i went the missed out on one of our mains (mine! :() so i had to wait another 15 mins while everyone else ate. All the problems being said - I still go back because if I want ramen or sushi, this is still my favourite.

Firstly, you will get way more produce for your money and also was more items that you would ever see on a supermarket shelf. As a chef, this place has allowed me to cook far more dishes than I would have been able to without the stock they sell. From expected noodles and soy sauce to palm sugar, if it's in a recipe they will likely sell it. There is also a nice range of cooking items like woks and crockery all at decent prices. What I also like is having a hunt through the freezer compartments for dumplings, Chinese buns and dim sum. You can even get random Chinese sweets like white rabbit candy (very tasty). The owner is a really sweet lady, who will happily have a little chat and offer the odd cooking tip. You will also find a lot of adverts on the shop front for Oriental cooking lessons, which would be a good way to get more out the shop. Argh! I should have listened to my inner radar better…read more It was a cold and rainy evening when I arrived in Brighton for their inzugural official Yelp event. Having a little time before the event, I was looking for something warming for a quick dinner and Mr Noodles caught my eye as I drove past on the way to park at Churchill Square A quick walk back up the street led me to read the menu offering ramen - perfect cold weather food and cheap at £6.80 for their signature Mr Noodles ramen bowl. So, I headed in to find canteen style seating and a largely student clientele I supplemented my ramen with an order of fish sushi. Sadly, the sushi was dreadful. Possibly the worst sushi I've ever had. The maki rolls were pre made. The rice was cold, tasteless and hardened with anaemic filling The ramen bowl was large with yellow soft egg noodles rather than proper ramen noodles. The soup tasted more like Chinese noodle soup. The dish was at least filling even if it wasn't authentic ramen To be fair, the price suggests that they're catering more to the student rather than tourist trade and while I toyed between 2 and 3 stars, I can't quite fogive the atrocious maki rolls. Next time, I'll be more organised and arrange to have dinner with one of the local Brighton Yelpers

Who would have thought that this somewhat strange combination could make me so happy! They have a selection of flavours which means I will have to return on a regular basis until I have sampled the lot. This time I tried the mango, the taste was fresh and subtle, I'm definitely a fan. And at £1.95 it's a tasty bargain too. The restaurant was empty when I went in, it was about half two in the afternoon so I'm hoping that trade does pick up at more regular meal times. It did give me a good opportunity to chat to the lady about the availability of bubble tea down south though! I didn't stop for food but had a quick browse of the menu. Lots of Japanese style rice and noodle dishes, katsu curries and a limited sushi choice. I will be back soon to sample the food and get my bubble tea fix!

Had a very odd meal here for a friends birthday recently- sadly not a success!…read more I didnt go for the all you can eat buffet (i'm never going to eat £15.80 worth of sushi) but off the main menu instead- beef ramen contained few vegetables and a LOT of seaweed- and about 3 pieces of beef. Stir fried veg was tasty but underwhelming. But the buffet menu my friends went for was made difficult!! Theres a constant review of the menu as the names of the dishes on the sheet you order it on dont describe what it is! So your constantly searching and comparing menus to make sure what you order is on the approved buffet list. What happens when you dont? Well some have supplments or are in red so cost more, my poor friends accidently paid nearly an extra £5 for one dish as more £'s on others where they hadnt realised red meant extra! Service is slow and inconsistent. It was very busy but Friday nights are busy everywhere so no excuse!! Sorry sushimania-you left us very disappointed and still a bit hungry!!

Oh Sushimania...I had such high hopes!…read more Last night I ordered from the Brighton branch of Sushiamania, using their website to order and opting to collect from the restaurant once my food was ready. The selection on their website is vast and the prices very reasonable and the website is very easy to navigate, which is always a plus! When I went in to collect my order the staff were extremely friendly! Once they knew which order I was there for they were very quick to get it for me and the man was very polite and even used my name several times when we spoke. I went for two sushi rolls (spicy tuna and salmon with a Teriyaki sauce) and some chicken dumplings. First of all, this was way too much for one person - they even put two sets of chopsticks in my take-away bag, embarrassingly! :P One roll and the dumplings would be plenty for an individual. The dumplings were delicious! Crispy, but still soft enough, and the sauce they came with was delightful. The sushi rolls, on the other hand, left me a little underwhelmed. The tuna roll appeared to have cooked tuna in it - reminiscent of that from a can - and both rolls lacked a little flavour, in my opinion. They looked wonderful and came with complimentary ginger, wasabi and a big pot of soy sauce, but unfortunately the taste didn't match the presentation for me. I am hopeful that I simply made the wrong food choices here. The service was outstanding and, as far as take-aways go, the prices were very good here. I was hoping this could be the great Brighton sushi place that I've been searching for, but unfortunately I am left unsure. I will go back to this place, as always, and give it a second chance. The interior of the restaurant looked beautiful and I know they do some great in-house deals, so perhaps my next visit will be a sit-in experience, rather than a take-away. Give this place a shot, but avoid the tuna if you're going to be unhappy without the usual raw fish.

Tuna nigiri was strangely colored and not too flavorful whereas seared salmon belly was a bit better and close to standard. Much better was chicken katsu curry and the gyoza, both of which were perfectly fine preparations of the comfort food classics. The vibe is a little weird.
