Situated in the heart of Hove, Fortune House is a great little Chinese takeaway. Having always…read morecalled rather than visited the establishment I' can say they have always been uber friendly and prompt delivery staff. The menu has the usual selection of Eastern classic like sweet and sour and lots of noodle dishes. Obviously its not the most healthy option but if you hungover it has the ideal selection of delicious stodge. They are also open until 11.30pm most eves so if all else fails he Fortune House will be open.

Sadly, it didn't really live up to expectations: the food was MSG-heavy and not particularly good, although I seem to have been lucky, judging by some of the reviews below. I certainly haven't experienced anything that badly sanitised, but it wouldn't surprise me greatly. The food here was truly nothing special. It's not as if Fortune House are doing anything particularly wrong: the prices and menu all scream of cheap, not-particularly-well-made take-away: if you're expecting anything more than that, then ordering take-away probably isn't for you in the first place. The stuff I had was basically perfectly acceptable, if not the best Chinese food I've ever had. I guess what I'm trying to say is: even the best take-away couldn't be more than 3 stars in my book, and this one seemed perfectly acceptable. In the end, there's nothing particularly to write home about when it comes to Fortune House. It's your bog-standard take-away; I didn't have a particularly bad experience, but if you're a frequent orderer of takeaway, you'll know the risks!

First, the food quality is good and reasonably priced (13 pounds). I ordered the big bowl pho soup includes noodles, meatballs, and beef with a side helping of bean sprouts to add. It was satisfying and hearty. The only blemish was that the broth had a bit more fat than I would have liked. Location is convenient for visitors to Brighton. It's on Preston Street near the Waitrose supermarket. From the Brighton I-360 tourist attraction, it's about 1-2 blocks north away from the water. From Churchill Square (near the clock tower), it's about a 5-7 minute walk to the west (along the street that is reserved for buses and taxis only). The restaurant is a bit tiny - I would recommend it for solo diner or couples. It's not convenient for a large group. Preston Street has a nice boba tea shop across the way and other restaurants that are worth a look-see. Overall, I would recommend "the Big Bowl" for visitors to Brighton who are looking for authentic Vietnamese pho.

I ordered the Bún cha combo which has vermicelli noodles, grilled pork, chicken and a spring roll. It comes with a dipping sauce that's a mixture of lemon juice, ginger, chilli, garlic and vinegar. It was tasty and cost just under £9. Service was very friendly and nice. I will definitely come back and try other items on the menu!

I've lived in Brighton for nearly two years now and, as a person who spent my formative years in…read moreHong Kong, could not find any local Chinese restaurant that took my fancy -- until now. As the first dish arrived, a warm noodle dish with a fermented bean sauce that I've ordered at countless Chinese resistants over the years despite repeated punishing disappointment, I was shocked to find it to be... perfect. Just the right amount of rich meat flavouring, no bitterness or cloying sweetness dominating the dish, and perfect ratio of sauce to noodles. The best version of this dish I have eaten outside of China. Then I tried the next dish -- again a commonly available and frequently ordered seared green beans with some spice and minced meat. Disbelief began to set in -- this was the best version of this dish I had in my LIFE. I began to wonder if I had accidentally starved myself for a week to make everything taste this good. Maybe I was going insane from infrequent Chinese food consumption. Maybe I needed to eat at a trashy Chinese restaurant to make sure I was properly calibrated. How could this random restaurant on Queens road, full of eateries that don't even have to be good because they get tourist foot traffic, be blowing my mind? We ordered yet two more dishes. The "Chinese Burger" -- our server admitted he just couldn't find a decent translation for the dish -- which consisted of fatty shredded richly flavoured meat not unlike the Chinese version of the shredded whole roast hog sandwiches that have recently joined London food markets in Southbank Centre and Borough Market. Much like my discovery of Polish lard spread with bits of bacon, the flavour put me beyond caring about the fat content. We finished with a Hunan tofu dish that, again, was stellar and for me an interesting contrast to a lot of the Sichuan tofu preparations I've tried in the past. Unusual for Chinese restaurants in the area, the server/owner was really friendly and chatty, talking about his idea behind the restaurant and photographing the food for the pictures in the window. It was a really warm welcome and only made me more excited to return. The only caveats are the small seating availability (it wasn't crowded -- yet -- but they only just opened a week ago) though they do takeaway, and the fact that the English menu is different from the Chinese menu, and contains an odd assortment of things mostly that people who don't really like and/or know Chinese food could order. It's ridiculous and you should order from the pictures in the window or ask the waiter what is actually on the Chinese menu. I begged them to translate it before I left. I'm still really confused about how every dish was beyond delicious. I will have to go eat at the lowest rated Chinese restaurant on Yelp, a Michelin starred one in London, and here again before I will probably be able to truly believe this magical experience really happened and can be had anytime I'm willing to spare a 5 min walk and £15pp. You think I'm joking, but I'll report back after I'm sure I'm properly calibrated.

Just one passing thought about Unithai Oriental Market sets me off into dream land again…read more.. thinking about the amazing red curry (likely the best I have ever had) and the spectacular soup (6c). It was like something out of dreams... and something that I never wanted to end. I wanted to become un-full so that I could go back and do it all over again. The bok choy was also amazing... simple, lovely sauce. Every dish could not have been any more tasty. The issue was with the time. We got there and were lucky to get a seat (arrived around 2:20pm on a Saturday). It was the last two seats in the house (not a large place to start with). Then the food took almost 45min to come out. And were I not so crazy-hungry it would have been okay. I heard the employee tell others over the phone that it would take an hour just for carry out. What this means is that the food is fresh - it's not some food stuffs hanging out in big pots just waiting to be placed in front of you. Just don't go too too hungry - it hurts. But the reward is so worth it. So so worth it. The staff are super friendly and the little food stuffs they sell at the market are great as well. I just love this place, and can't wait to be back in Hove at eating-time. It's what I'll go to sleep thinking about... then I'll likely have lovely happy dreams.

Ok so I'd happily live in here…read more My review is for the restaurant in the back of the supermarket - I've been back a few times since my last review and the food is always incredible. It's now my favourite restaurant in Brighton without a doubt. The noodle soups (6a and 6b on the menu) are fresh and always delicious. They taste just like in Thailand and are truly a cure for anything, be it a hangover, cold or a bad mood (or just because...!) 6a is a huge bowl of clear, flavourful stock, beansprouts, perfectly cooked rice noodles and fish balls, amazing fish sausage and ground pork. SO good. 6b is the bolder, richer older sibling. A dark and seriously aromatic broth with rice noodles, tender pork slices, springy pork balls and ground pork. For just over £6 it can't get any better! Add some (or all) of the condiments on the table, but be especially generous with the chilies in vinegar, so good. The chili flakes are HOT though! Both noodle soups are wonderful, textural experiences and a true meal in a bowl, although we always order a side of morning glory in either oyster sauce or chilli and garlic - both are perfect. The service is always great but at it's best when the aunty is there because she is lovely, clearly passionate about Thailand and Thai food and is very chatty and impressed if you speak any basic Thai. It's always busy but you'll always get a table after a wait. When it's especially packed or if you're dining alone you may be put on the communal table which is still comfortable, fun and people are often very friendly. If your a fan of real Thai food and are happy to eat somewhere casual, unlicensed, cash-only and in the back of a Thai supermarket, you definitely won't be disappointed!

Always a good sign! Made a reservation for 8:45pm and went out for a drink. Make sure to make a reservation on Fridays! I ordered a Tokyo Tonkotsu (large with no extras) and a Kirin beer and my girlfriend ordered a Wakame Ramen (medium with extra pickled ginger) and a plum wine! The ramen was really really good. It looked like Jason Pollock splattered my t-shirt with Pork Bone broth afterwards! The large portion for more than enough (and we had just finished a long walk and we're starving). I would recommend adding extra pork but that's the only thing I would change. The extra pickled ginger also supposedly went really well with the Wakame (chicken) ramen. I will be coming back here soon and bringing the rest of the family!

Not bad for a random ramen spot on the English seaside…read more The Tokyo Tonkotsu bowl is less like the complex, thin broths at self-aware ramen shops across NYC and more like the hearty, no-frills ramen I had in Japan (e.g. Tenkaippin!) - so unctuous and flavorful that the broth is undrinkable at the end. I was expecting something more watery and clean-tasting from the vegetarian soy milk ramen. What came instead was thick and rich, nearly as heavy as the tonkotsu (minus all that salt). It had no soybean flavor, but I can see it being a holy grail for vegetarians who want to experience the luscious guilt of a fatty pork broth. I'm still conflicted (my palate wanted soy milk!) but it was certainly tasty. The karaage was not what I expected either. It's more a boneless tebasaki - fried chicken morsels given the Japanese chicken wing treatment, coated in a thin, sweet soy glaze. I liked it but was craving the typical, dry karaage fried lightly in starch. I do wish the bowls had been served hotter. They use thin noodles (apparently made in-house?!) and wanting to retain the noodle consistency is one excuse for serving a broth less than boiling hot, but the noodles got soggy quickly anyway. Manager and staff are friendly. Actual Japanese people come here willingly! 10% student discount helps with the £8 pricetag.

In my historical experience I has never found that to be the case and dismissed their complaint. After going there last week I was shocked to find out it is the case. They were not busy (5 tables in use) and the service was awful. Pancakes and hoi sin sauce along with cucumber and spring onion were forgotten when we ordered duck and by the time then came out the duck was cold. The crispy Mongolian lamb was greasy damp and slimy. They kept bringing out the wrong food. The worse point is that they are now pumping so much MSG into their food that after hardly any starters we were so uncomfortably full. I refused to pay the service charge but begrudgingly paid the £60 for 3 people for the food which only included one beer and two lemonades and about the same amount of food as you would find in 3 takeaway cartons. If you have enjoyed Jade in the past please don't go there again as the experience will now make you angry and wish that you could borrow a Delorean from Michael J Fox.
