We dropped into Pho for lunch on a rainy Monday in Brighton. Food was great and the service was amazing. Everyone was really friendly especially our waitress, Sam. I was really starving and so pleased that food came really quickly. The noodle soup (vegan) was delicious and the ginger tea really hit the spot. Carafe of water also really appreciated. Water filled timely. Orders taken promptly. What was pho-awful -'s: - Pho. The shrimp was overcooked. The beef brisket was not standard and well done. The rice noodles didn't taste right either. Kinda huge miss since it's pho. - Broth. Usually I finish it but this was not the case. Flavoring was off. - Balance and Taste. OFF. I eat plenty of pho in California with the huge Vietnamese community that thrives there and this place was not hitting the mark. It's fine if an establishment wants to reinterpret pho and make it something interesting but this was not the case. If you are used to real pho and taste then I'd bypass this place. My experience of Pho is near bang on the same as the lovely Gemma G's. On arrival we encountered a slightly, distracted waiter but our actual server was quite sweet despite not knowing the menu very well. (I always need a recommendation - can't bare food envy!) I had the prawn rice paper rolls and they were ok but again felt as if they'd been sitting around for a while... For mains I had the house Pho, (beef broth, sliced steak, prawns + tofu) which was quite exciting to look at as it comes with a load of herbs and chilli to whack in according to your own preference, I whacked it ALL in and still felt it was lacking in flavour. The noodles are SO bland, I get that they need to compliment the other flavours but when most of the dish is bulked out by big noodles they overwhelmed me with their blandness. Pass the salt. Pass the chilli. Pass anything that stops me feeling beige! My companions curry was nothing to write home about. The food was ok. Not terrible, not amazing, just middle of the road. We'd arrived about 8.30pm on a Sunday and ordered a bottle of wine and although we'd finished the food we'd still had half a bottle left to finish. Again like Gemma's experience - they'd made it clear to us they wanted to shut up shop and had switched the music off and blasted all the lights on. We'd only been seated 45 mins at the most. I wanted to give this place a go as I love Vietnamese food. However my boyfriend and I were left so disappointed after the meal here. I had the veggie spring rolls as a starter which was tasty. But when our pho came, it all went downhill. The soup was tasteless and the noddles were just not cooked well. My chicken also tasted like it was shredded and then thrown in there at the last minute. My first taste of Vietnamese food & I loved it. The staff were super friendly & chatty, there was a really great atmosphere all around us. Luckily we booked ahead because it was really busy & I can see why. I tried the Pho Tam which is a tiger prawn noodle soup - the ingredients were so fresh & tasty, it was really good. Arriving in Brighton in February from Miami was a bit of a shock to the system! The frigid air instantly made us crave pho. This place was a short walk from our hotel on the seafront and was inviting and warm. My husband and I both ordered the vegan pho. While we enjoyed the warmth of the soup and the surroundings, the soup itself was mediocre. The broth was lacking the floral flavor typical of pho and the tofu's texture was a bit off. We also ordered their summer rolls with peanut sauce and those were quite delicious. I would go back here for the summer rolls, but not the pho. read more

Whenever I'm in Brighton I always go to Pho. It's my favourite restaurant! The restaurant itself is trendy, hip and modern which fits well being in Brighton. The staff are always quick, helpful and friendly and the food is so tasty and fresh every time. I usually take the Crispy pork spring rolls with peanut sauce and they are so delicious. I also take the tofu and mushroom cari which is just so yummy. It's packed full of fresh vegetables and fills you up. Portion sizes are great for the value of money! Would definitely recommend Pho to anybody visiting Brighton. The lunch deal between 12-5 is also worth going for. read more

For quite an eclectic town, it surprises me that Pho is Brighton's only Vietnamese offering. I've been here a few times now, I quite like it, but it's not one of those places that I feel I need to rush back to. Having spent some time in Vietnam a couple of years ago, I know that this isn't how true Pho is supposed to taste, but then again, I wouldn't expect it to taste exactly as it does in Vietnam, the ingredients are going to vary and this really isn't that bad a replica. I have also tried one of noodle dishes on a previous occasion, and again it was good but didn't wow me. This visit didn't start out great as the waitress that greeted us just waved her hand in the direction of the table. Not a great first impression! The waitress that then looked after us was much more friendly thankfully. Our order was taken swiftly and the starters delivered quickly - so quickly in fact that they arrived five minutes before our drinks! My prawn summer rolls were ok, a little stodgy, as if they were sat around for a while. My boyfriend's morning glory (he he!) was very tasty. I went for the steak pho. The broth itself was pretty tasty and you can embellish the dish as you wish with the sides - bean sprouts, chilli, coriander, mint, and a few other herbs that I couldn't identify, plus the various sauces on the table. Unfortunately, I overdid it on the chillies and kinda ruined my dish - a heads up on the heat level wouldn't go amiss in the future. My brother went for a spicy soup and was provided with a bib to protect his shirt - they obviously remembered him! A shared pudding of honey and ginger ice cream was plenty for four of us, and the total bill wasn't too excessive (f you forget the fact that this is supposed to be street food). The last time I went to Pho was about 5 years ago when I was still at Uni. I really didn't enjoy it, but I think that's because I went for something (Pho/Broth with noodles) that isn't really my cup of tea. However I went again last weekend, as Scott and I fancied somewhere different and I thought I would give it another shot. I'm really glad I did! We had a delicious starter of pork spring rolls and chicken wings. They were both really tasty and flavoursome. For the main I opted for the 'broken rice' with brisket. Scott had the same but with chicken. It came in a coconut based curry sauce that was really nice. I imagine it to be the Vietnamese version of a Katsu Curry. I first went here about 6 years ago. I think I tried some kind of duck wrap. It was like water wrapped in toilet paper with lettuce and a shred of duck. I'd never been so reluctant to part with currency. A couple of weeks ago I was out with Sophie and she done the thing where she was hinting that she wanted to eat out without saying those actual words. Food for Friends was busy, Gars always looks too mobbish and I don't like the ginger they scatter around Moshi Moshi. Oh and the light was out on the menu outside Jamie's so that stopped us from wanting to go in there. Wazzy wazzy no no. Which meant we were left with Pho. I was very reluctant but Sophie assured me that this place had changed. I think she was lying but she was annoying me and I just wanted to eat. They told us that we would have to wait 20 to 30 minutes for a table (it was a Friday night I think). This made me even more miserable. I began to calculate the total cost of food PLUS the cocktails that Sophie would now inevitably want to order. I was being robbed. Robbed by the bland duck thieves. She ordered about 18 cocktails and I had a single apple juice. It bugged me that my apple juice was so fresh that it went brown really quickly. Unappetizing as shit. Then we got pitched up next to 4 American girls. I think they were on holiday. I had to try really hard and filter out their conversation. It's not that they were loud, but their voices just weren't built for an open space like this. I tilted my body slightly to the side so I didn't have to see them spitting food everywhere. We were sat on the stools. I don't mind sitting on stools but I know Sophie hates it. Because I know she hates it, that made ME on edge. So up to this point, I would have gladly taken some Andrex lettuce to go and cut my losses. Then things got a lot better. We ordered a lot of food. I figured that if I played a numbers game, there would have to be something for me to enjoy. The spicy chicken wings were dreamy. I forgave them for everything solely on the basis of this sassy poultry. I am easy. Then we had some hog springers (pork spring rolls. I want this to catch on). Then broken rice and I think some kind of red chicken curry for main. It was all really, really good. I have no complaints. In fact, I think I could have eaten more. I wanted more rice so that I could swish it about in the sauce. I really liked the lighting in here. It softened the headache I had from all the mental arithmetic and Sophie yapping on at me. Oh you should probably know that they also offer NUS discount. I have learned my lesson. Just because somewhere is bad once, it doesn't mean you should NEVER go back. Had a nice enough meal here a few weeks ago. It was early evening and the big premises wasn't at all busy. The waitress who served us was super helpful, suggesting that I get the peanut sauce with my noodles rather than one with fish stock, as I chose the vegetarian tofu option. The food was nice if a bit bland, with really big portions. Would prefer if the sizes were slightly smaller and a bit cheaper to reflect that? It was ok, nothing fantastic. read more

I enjoyed my meal here. Came with the special lady on a Saturday night before the Brighton Half Marathon. The layout is nice, quite expansive with a sort of industrial feel. The food was certainly not five star quality but neither was it bad. For under £10 an entree I cannot complain because the meal was filling and, I thought, pretty tasty. I had a big salad with chicken and other stuff; the lady had a prawn curry. The food was delivered incredibly quickly, so I am guessing it was already made. The service was fine, well above average. We got what we wanted when we wanted it and the server seemed on her game. No complaints in this area. All and all a positive experience for me. She totally noticed just how bad it was. She said that it was probably cooked and left to be heated because true pho will not taste not that. The dish was completely tasteless! What is wrong with Britain? Are they afraid of flavors? I had to douse my bowl with a tub of chili sauce + something else. I was totally just drinking the sauces in the end. Pho noodles are not supposed to be thick, for one. The noodles they used are called "chang fun", not the ones that are usually used in real pho. Obviously for someone with coeliac disease, a restaurant where the majority of the food is naturally gluten free is going to be a dream come true! I grabbed a pho takeaway last week. We hadn't ordered ahead of time, so we popped in to order. The website says there can be a bit of a wait so it's best to call ahead to order if in a hurry. But it didn't feel like we waited long at all. They prepared our two beef pho soups in a few minutes and we were off. Once back at work, I was pleased to find the noodles and broth in separate containers. There was also a little baggy of extra coriander and chilis and whatnot, so you can really tailor your experience. And it was loads of food. I couldn't finish mine. I think next time I'd go for a spicy version, just for a bit more flavour than a beef broth. But otherwise, this is definitely on my list of places where I can get something good and not too absurdly priced. read more

This is one of my new favourites in town. On my travels I ended up in Vietnam for a while, and ate pho nearly every day. It was so delicious... The only time until recently I've been able to get it is if in London, so really happy this place has opened. The (pho) noodle soups are utterly delicious. Nicely designed place too. So, this is maybe an odd style of reviewing, but here we go.... I'm a 'North Lainer', but a leisurely stroll through the 'south' the other day I happened across Pho. Initially, I though, 'Hmmm... Looks like a big chain-type-thing... but was beckoned with a smile from the staff, which seemed sincere and inviting, and turned out to be exactly that. I went in and was seated at the front of the restaurant sound-tracked by a Warpaint track which immediately made me think, 'This is cool.' Anyway, enough about preconceptions and my being out of my normal habitat in the 'north'.... Pho was a superb experience in every sense. The food, service and atmosphere were all utterly delectable. I'm one of those people that ALWAYS order too much food due to be indecisive, so I tried lots of things that I'd never tried before, so left stuffed, but in that nice way that you only get from Asian cuisine. I'm going to use the English titles for the dishes for ease of communication.. So to start, I had the prawn summer rolls (fresh, not fried) and the spicy mango salad - these were the equivalent of an LSD explosion of flavour on my palette... The individual flavours all completely clear, but perfectly in unison and built perfectly to compliment each other. This was followed by the bun noodles with tofu and mushrooms, which immediately has become my favourite dish. It has this base of room temperature noodles (don't let this put you off..), fresh salad and an array of herbs, and then topped with a wok-fried blend of the tofu and mushrooms mixed with garlic, lemongrass, a bit of chili for good measure, then sprinkled with peanuts and fried shallots. This comes with a delicious fishy sauce that can be spicy or the regular version. This dish IS mindblowing.. Seriously, the flavour overload (in a good way) is insane! Once mixed, you have this wonderful fresh warm salad/noodle/stir-fry dish that will have you tipping the bowl back at the end and slurping every gulp of its goodness... I rarely get so excited about foo, but Pho has given me a religious/apple mac/drug-like experience that has no competitors in Brighton. You really have to 'see/taste to believe... I can't recommend this place highly enough. P.S. The girls that work here and the music were all absolutely wonderful too, adding to the fantastic experience. Love you Pho. read more

No, really. £6.95-£8.95 for a bowl of Pho is kind of silly. Especially outside of London. Keeping in mind this is definitely NOT authentic Vietnamese food..... I LOVE the Bun Cha Gio Chay. It's basically vermicelli rice noodles, fresh herbs, crunchy carrot and mooli pickle and crisp lettuce, garnished with roasted peanuts and fried shallots and topped with veggie spring rolls. I substitute the nuoc cham (non-veg friendly) sauce for the ginger-soy sauce. Sometimes you just crave some (non-authentic) noodles with veggies, spring rolls and peanuts. I know you feel me people and that's probably why there are so many high ratings on here. Well that and most people probably have no idea what real Pho tastes like. haha read more

Located in the lanes, this modern-decorated restaurant boasts a nice atmosphere, plenty of space inside and a lovely terrace for dinners al fresco! We'd eaten in the London branch of Pho before and were pleased we weren't disappointed with the Brighton restaurant. Lovely food, served quickly by friendly staff..... loved it. We visited Pho Brighton on the weekend and unfortunately, despite friendly staff, great atmosphere and great (tasting) food, we ended up with severe food poisoning from the starter (spring rolls with peanut sauce). Move over Wagamama! Really amazing salads which were made in front of us by a Vietnamese lady in the open kitchen. A brilliant summer option. The boyfriend had the hot and spicy beef pho (bun bo hue) which came with a plate of herbs and a hot chilli and fish sauce. The best soup he's ever had apparently. I've not been to Vietnam yet but as far as Brighton goes this is great. I love the open kitchen, the service was very attentive and the location with a sea view is unbeatable. read more

Having only just opened its doors, Brighton's Pho brings its customers an authentic taste and feel of Vietnamese cooking. However, the attentive staff and efficient service means that, even if it's packed to the rafters, you'll always be treated well. What's more is that this comes with a surprisingly reasonable price tag. Most main courses are around £7 and the portion sizes are huge, making it perfect for hungry students looking for a filling but healthy treat. With plenty of quirky dishes, including weasel coffee, made from beans that have passed through the digestive system of a weasel, Pho will please both foodies and indiscriminate types. This place was a great surprise when we stopped in for lunch this afternoon. I am relatively used to Pho places, which pop up in the US with such abundance that they're numbered instead of named. This restaurant really takes the concept from the typical deli atmosphere to something very special. I had the pho with tofu and mushrooms, and it arrived with a beautiful dish of fresh herbs that all looked beautiful. There is a wonderful depth of flavor that is complex and still very fresh. My boyfriend had Bun noodles, which I think he loved. My only complaints were that the bamboo chairs were extremely uncomfortable (I actually think I had lines in my bum when I stood up), and the service was a bit slow (not the food, but ordering/getting the bill). Neither of these things were enough to dissuade me from returning. read more

This is not what authentic pho tastes like. The broth was way too light and obviously not cooked for the 2-3 days it requires to get all the flavor from the bones. Additionally, the noodle was wrong. It's "fuh?" not "foe!" (Yes, it's correctly pronounced with a slight upward tone as if you're asking a question, Valley Girl Style, for those of you familiar with Valley speak.) This place is very happening, filled with hip looking people. The place was almost packed early on a Friday night (unsurprisingly). They had morning glory (aka haiwaiian watercress, water spinach, or ong choy) on the menu, something I try to find in Los Angeles at various Thai, Chinese & Vietnamese places, with no luck. They made it well, but the portion was very small. Their pho noodles is wider than what I'm used to, but it was good and the texture was great. The soup base was fresh & complex. The variety of the "stuff" you throw into your soup was great, too. In LA and San Gabriel Valley (Golden Deli), you just get mint leaves, bean sprouts, and a wedge of lime. Here, you got lots more. But please, ditch the stupid, unwieldly "ladle spoon" you use as soup spoons. It's just a gimmicky thing to try to impress tourists. read more

After reading some of the other reviews I feel like I ate at a different restaurant. Yes the noodles were the thick kind rather than the thin rice noodles, but other than that I feel the place compares favourably with Pho places in San Francisco, where I lived for 10 years. The rolls, both spring and summer to start with were excellent and my pho and my wife's cari were very tasty. The service was great and the desserts of strawberry and basil sorbet and banana fritters were the perfect end to the meal. I will return here for sure. read more

I really enjoy coming here after having such a positive first experience at their London restaurant. The food is generous and well proportioned, never taking too long to arrive, and the service is efficient and attentive, although sometimes lacking the warmth that a smaller venue would be able to offer. I don't hold this against them, though, because I know it's difficult to stay on top of things when you've got a busy restaurant. I am extremely pleased that kids are also well looked after, with kid friendly meals and colouring books with crayons provided. Two small complaints, however, is that sometimes there could be more veggies on the fairly starch-heavy platter and the kid's menu isn't posted on their Website. It seems like a small thing but kids are the most fussy eaters so I'm sure it would make a difference to more than a few people to see it there. The dining space is large and airy, with an open kitchen design. The bathrooms are large, clean and well designed, which always scores big points with me. Pho use Union Hand-Roasted coffee, which I have yet to try at their place, but both Taylor Street Baristas and Ground coffeehouses use Union and their coffees are awesome (see my other reviews). Hopefully, they have learned the proper methods for making espresso. I'll check next time I'm in. Overall, great place. What really defines quality, however, is how this place will look and feel after a couple of years. Will it come across as tired and formulaic (Wagamama?)? Or will it keep that edge? So so so so good. Went with a friend for dinner here last night, we both got the bun noodles with vegetable spring rolls. SO GOOD! Crispy and tasty spring rolls, glorious noodles, shredded vegetables and a sauce that literally made my mouth come! We shared a bottle of wine and the check only came to £33! WHAAAAAAT???!!! Definitely be back for more goodness. Can't wait to taste the broth, I've heard it's fab! read more
