I used to be a loyal Murasaki customer for years, ordering curry udon and curry rice with karaage chicken. But in the last year, quality and taste has gone downhill. It seems like the restaurant has changed hands as the sauce and chicken is different and they've reduced the portion sizes however maintaining prices. Undoubtedly one of the best Japanese restaurants in Brighton. That's quite an assertion to make, but if you've been there yourself you'll know what I'm talking about. If you like your sushi then perhaps try the Sushi Bento (5 pieces of nigiri sushi: salmon, tuna, prawn, mackerel & squid, 3 pieces of vegetable hosomaki, 2 pieces of futomaki, fishcakes plus edamame & pickles & a drink). However, since this is an Isakaya restaurant and not strictly sushi, there are plenty of other items on the menu to choose from including udon noodles and their tapas choices. My personal favourites have to be the Daikon & Seaweed salad in a Plumleaf dressing and Hash Browns in Teriyaki sauce. These is Japanese diner cuisine at its best. read more

I took my mum here on Saturday night. I walk past fairly often and it always looks very quiet. Luckily, I decided as it was a Saturday, to make a reservation. So glad I did! When we arrived, every table was reserved. We got to chose which table we wanted, we took the one in the corner which was quite private and very lovely. I'm a big fan of sake, so ordered a small bottle. It was barrel aged, something I'd not had before. I'm quite used to sweet sake's so it was nice to try something different - this had a very peppery flavour to it. Not everyone's cup of tea, my mum didn't like it, but I loved it and took the rest of the bottle home with me. Me and my mum shared loads of small dishes between us. We had tempura veg- delicious! tempura prawns with katsu, veggie gyozas, sashimi, miso aubergine, seaweed salad etc. etc. the list goes on! I think we ordered about 9 dishes between us, a definite over order! I used to work at an Asian restaurant so it was really nice to have dishes which reminded me of it. I'd also been craving veg gyozas for weeks! I really enjoyed eating there and would definitely come back again. Yum yum! read more

Thank the lord I live just round the corner from here. It has saved me a number of times when I'm feeling indecisive about what to eat, a feeling often fuelled by the huge amount of choice in Seven Dials. It's making me hungry just thinking about it. Murasaki serve up some great sushi, and during the lunchtime hours they do a range of deals all for around £5-7. There's the Sushi Bento, filled with classics such as nigiri, hosomaki, and fishcakes. This is another great choice for those indecisive moments. However, Murasaki is not just a sushi restaurant - they also have a substantial hot food menu, with noodles, gyoza and rice dishes available. The drinks selection is also good with Japanese beers, sake and green tea. I think Murasaki brings a little bit of Japan to Seven Dials roundabout. And if you'd rather it be brought to your living room then there's also a delivery service run from Murasaki Bento just around the corner. read more

I popped in to Murasaki for a quick lunch when I was snowed in at my Boyfriend's back in March. I had wanted to try it for ages and this seemed like the perfect opportunity. The place was packed for a Tuesday lunch time, presumably with people who had a bonus day off from work/school due to the adverse weather conditions, hence there was a strange holiday feeling that lifted the mood if not the temperature! I was seated on a small table by the radiator and was quickly given the menu. There was so much to chose from it's difficult to know where to start. To satisfy my need to try as much as possible I decided to go for the bamboo bento box which came with miso soup, 2x prawn katsu, 2x veggie gyoza, teriyaki tofu steak, 3x California roll and edamame. There was loads of food for just one person and I left absolutely stuffed. I also thought the price was pretty good at £7.95 although I think it is considerably more expensive in the evening. The only thing I didn't like was the green tea which had a very strange after taste, to the point that I left over half. There is a separate branch of this restaurant (Murasaki Bento) that does take away, this one is sit down only. The staff were friendly and efficient. I'll definitely be back to try more of the menu, but hopefully not in the snow! read more

Tucked away in the hub of the seven dial roundabout, Murasaki takes Japanese cuisine beyond the sushi franchises found elsewhere in the city. Being a Japanese restaurant, expect to be surprised by the wide ranging menu with tapas dishes, sushi boards and excellent tempura. If you prefer a more substantial plate, then main meals are available and anyone who has travelled to South East Asia will delight in seeing proper 12 inch tempura prawns on the menu! The restaurant has a welcoming ambience and the seating adopts an east/west fusion, offering tables or counters. This works well and depending on the size of your dining group you find that you are never cramped, nor attempting a balancing act should you opt for a tapas meal with extra table wear. The staff are friendly and attentive without becoming obtrusive and happy to help advise the sushi novice. There is a decent range of western and Japanese drinks on offer, including a respectable range of organic beverages. If you are going to visit the restaurant on the weekend, I would advise booking as seating is limited. Expect to be paying £10-20 per person for food, depending on your selection, with drinks at expected restaurant rates. In short, a bespoke approach to Japanese dining. read more

Best Japanese food I've had outside of Japan. There are some things missing from the menu, Okinomiyaki in particular, but their menu is online and seems accurate to me. We has a broad range of foods; tofu, beef, pork, vegetables and sashimi, everything was excellent. However the standout dish was the yakiniku. Utterly sublime. We had it with beef but it came with cabbage, onions and chillies. read more

It's always busy at Murasaki which shows just how great this place is. The selection of Japanese tapas is superb, I particularly favour the aubergine and tofu in miso. The staff are helpful and attentive without harrassing. Don't panic if bar seating is the only option available, the stools are extremely comfortable. Wholeheartedly disappointing. Had take-away this evening and was a real let down. There were only 2 decent dishes out of a dozen. Their Japanese hash browns are nothing but the frozen McCain ones. Their pumpkin korroke and chicken katsu are deep fried from frozen, apart from the sauce for the katsu, which was made and packaged by a company. The tempura was either over cooked or under cooked. The only redeeming dishes were their beef meatballs and their ginger chicken rice. Both very tasty. Will not be returning when their are far better Japanese options in Brighton. read more

Was staying around the corner and came here twice while I was in town. The sashimi was grrrrreat and the tempura too. The noodle soup I had earlier in my stay was so-so, and left me with a strong feeling of MSG-high on my tastebuds. My girlfriends lunchtime bento seemed better. read more

We booked here on the basis that it's not one but two of my trusted friends favourite restaurant, and it didn't disappoint last night. Four of us had an absolutely delicious meal: delightful pure sashimi, tasty crunchy tempura and some incredibly flavoursome meat dishes. Great food, arrived quickly and to be honest we felt we could have quite happily tried anything else from the 75% of the menu and been confident that it would've been equally scrumptious. Lovely sake and the usual beers and wines. The service was friendly, prompt and cheerful, and the ambience was cosy, warm and informal. Worth booking in advance, as we were lucky to get a table for four at 5 pm that afternoon and only then for the 9 pm sitting - earlier times were fully booked. read more

Although not my favourite for sushi, it is my favourite for general Japanese food. This is not because it's at the end of my road but rather that my wife is not a fan of sushi. Murasaki has a fantastic hot menu that we like to sit and pick at for hours. It is all complimented with a number of different Saki at varying temperatures from cold to hot and the fantastic Chu-Hi cocktails. A must for anyone who enjoys Japanese food in Brighton. read more

Love this place for a great mid week dinner. Food dishes come out pretty quickly. Pickled veg are yum! Never actually had sushi here as the specials always tempt us as does everything else. Dishes all a great size and prices are ok too, not that cheap but worth the prices. The guys working there always come and take your order quickly then leave you alonr so no hovering around bothering you like a lot of places. Although I'm no expert in Japanese food, I thought it was good overall. The food was well presented and tasted very fresh. The service was efficient considering there was only one server for the entire venue when we visited! The white Rioja was great also and went really nicely with the zesty flavours especially the dumplings. Will definitely visit again soon! read more

This is one of my favourate Japanese restaurants and I'm gutted that I no longer live round the corner. It's very small and would probably be quite uncomfortable with more than four people but is much better suited to a cosy dinner for two. Theres so many delicious things on the menu and I've always found the best way to do it is to to just order in drips and drabs like tapas, it also makes it really sociable. The decor is very authentic and the staff all wear kimonos but it doesn't feel gimiky. The menu is a taster style format though there are other options, it's definately a place to go if you want to try Japanese food that isn't just sushi. read more

this is a nice intimate little place. ideal for couples or a very small gathering rather than a big group, though. the price range is pretty good and accessible, even to those who are a bit out of pocket. i think you get what you pay for, which is always a plus. the staff are pretty attentive and friendly, which helps to make a comfortable atmosphere. however, they did get our order wrong and we didn't realise until it was too late, but i don't think that would be a point i would like to complain about, as the waitress made a genuine mistake and this was not out of doing a rubbish job. the food was good, although the chicken gyozas were slightly burnt. the sashimi was good and recommended if you can stomach raw fish. wasn't really a fan of how the food was presented, however, as the bowls resembled a giant dog bowl, but i guess it kept me laughing. read more

Murasaki is probably one of the most authentic and enjoyable Japanese dining experiences in Brighton. The food and presentation is very high quality and portion sizes are ample. The prices are quite reasonable and the staff are very friendly and helpful if you need assistance with the menu. The place being very small can get very busy which although creates a constantly buzzing atmosphere, can make it a difficult spontaneous event, especially at weekends. read more

Food was expensive and very salty, but okay. The manager was indifferent and asked us to pay without clearing our plates first or offering coffees/deserts. I asked if we could finish our wine and she said she supposed so as it would take some time to clear down - it was only 10pm and our bill was about £80 for 2 people so felt a bit disappointed with the attitude. read more

I go to this small, intimate restaurant all the time for sushi and sashimi. I rate it as the best in Brighton for Japanese food. The food is always fresh and really tasty. If you're not a fish lover go for the chicken ton katsu yum. read more
