Prawn toast

I was surprised to see that this restaurant was still open late at night, when I randomly decided I was hungry. It was very convenient, because I was rather craving Thai food. The food here was pretty standard fare thai food, but I enjoyed it. They didn't have Thai iced tea though, and the lady looked at me like I was crazy when I asked.. does this just not exist in England?

My go-to option for takeaway Thai in Brighton. High quality dishes (the green curry has a good level of spice to it) and reasonably priced.

For some reason I tend to be suspicious of takeaways that are too close to home- it's a twisted self-punishing philosophy that has me believing that I must make a massive effort if I want tasty food. This is England, we don't have nice affordable food on our doorsteps, do we?! Well I can now dispel this myth, as I have found the best Thai takeaway in town, right under my very nose! Delicious prawn toast, tom khan soup, pad Thai and spicy beef salad were among the orders from my flat this past weekend. The tom khan soup was literally the best I've ever tasted, it was just so lemongrassy...and it really helped to warm my cockles on a cold Autumn eve! The menu is vast with all the usual curries and noodles as well as more unusual fish and meat dishes. Prices are average. Now that I've started paying attention, this place is packed every time I walk past. It is not the loveliest of restaurants. Still, I am a fool for ignoring it for so long. Highly recommended.

Naturally the staff are adorable and friendly, and their extensive menus boasts of the favourites and more- I had the delicious Tom Khan Soup and the extremely spice Som Tam green salad. The exterior is deceptive, but it's unfair to prejudge a place like this when it's the food that really counts and this food is worth counting.

A previous thai restaurant has been reaping the rewards of good karma (Thais are generally Buddhists right?) and been reincarnated another step close to nirvana. Renewed, refurbishsed and really rather good. When you eat in, the service is brisk and friendly. The red curry is very good and quite fiery. The thai pad thai has all the nutty, sticky goodness you'd expect. Save some pennies and take your own booze: the corkage is a quid. Cut costs even more by eating there during the week. There's an all you can eat buffet for a tenner on a Monday. Get 50% of your bill on a Wednesday. And rejoice, they do takeaway and delivery too so you can have it at home, piping hot if you don't want to put your glad rags on. It's all priced very reasonably too. This is a recession busting, cheap and cheerful place to eat and I hope it's here to stay.

But it's still a good value Thai cafe-restaurant. The interior has had a welcome makeover, with a much fresher look, new flooring and much nicer furniture - bigger tables and much more comfortable chairs. The toilets are also much improved (and not before time). Overall, the ambience is pleasant and relaxed. The menu has rolled forward from the Little Buddha, so may change at some point soon, but the food we had this evening was an improvement on the Little Buddha - the soups was still very good, but my main course (a ginger and spring onion dish - I'm not good on Thai descriptions) seemed to have fresher flavours. The bill for two courses and corkage for two people (they do BYO but also have a licence) was a reasonable £22. Service was friendly and efficient, but to be fair it was fairly quiet as we went late. Take-away also available.

Very definitely freshly made, they dealt with our table of 6 with ease, even though they apologised when we ordered that they had no waiting staff in tonight! Starters at about £3 each and main meals from £9.50 for veggie, then £10+ for different meats. We were too happily full to even look at a dessert but we all had beautiful teas with our meal. The attention to detail, Brighton-style, was lovely. Our tea was served with matching cups and teapots for teas for 2, all different and original pretty china. The rice served shaped, in a star and hearts- twee and too girly for some, a cute attention to detail for me- It's nice to know it's not just been slopped on a plate! Prices, I would say, are standard for Thai but definitely good value for the calming, relaxed atmosphere and the freshness of the food. Not being a local, I would definitely risk getting lost on a daytrip to find it.

Very friendly and quick service, with generous portions. The only two things that may put people off is the relatively bright lighting and the basic decor. However, unless you're going out for a romantic meal, don't let this put you off because the food is fantastic - especially considering the good prices. Quite possibly the best Thai meal I've had in the UK for years; the freshest and juiciest prawn on toast I've possibly ever had; and a gorgeous red Thai curry sauce. The tofu tasted a bit 'deep fat fryer' but the rest of the meal was virtually done to perfection and my partner's meal (prawn red Thai curry) was, if anything, better. Oh, the wine list is very limited, but when the food is this good I'm more than happy to stick to Chang or Singha lager.

This is a relatively new restaurant that has opened up in the heart of the Lanes. The premises are massive, spread out over two floors with a fantastic roof terrace for those sunny Brighton days (few and far between as they are at the moment!). Although bright and airy, I felt the restaurant lacked a little ambiance and atmosphere. I came here with a large group of work friends and the service was great, all the food delivered quickly and at the same time. There is a varied drinks menu and I could definitely recommend the New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. They also have a comprehensive cocktail list which I didn't sample on this occasion. Now for the important part - the food! For starter I went for the soft shell crab which was absolutely delicious, and I would highly recommend it. Also exceptional was the pudding - green tea cheese cake - nom nom nom! Unfortunately, it was the main course that rather let the meal down. I went for the Kao Phad - Thai green curry fried rice with chicken, tiger prawns bamboo shoots, aubergines and Thai sweet basil leaves. The flavour was quite nice and had a good level of spiciness. However, the texture was very dry and they were very stingy on the meat and veg - it was verging on just being a plate of greenish rice. Maybe this is how the dish is meant to be served but it just wasn't for me. It was also accompanied by a clear soup that was ok, but again not that full of flavour. Having said that, the menu is very reasonably priced and I will definitely be back to try out some more dishes.

And for those sunny days in Brighton (if there are any), there is a rooftop terrace that looks quite nice. Will definitely be coming back for that in the summer. My friend and I both ordered a Thai ice tea but it was too sweet for both of us. However, things did look up. I ordered the chicken tom yum kuay teow noodles and as promised, it was quite spicy. For someone of Southeast Asian descent, it was a proper level of spice but I would air on the side of caution and ask them to make it less spicy if you are a spice novice. For me, it was perfect. Very satisfying and well-flavored. My friend ordered some prawn curry dish. For me, it was a bit on the sweet side but that is typical of Western-prepared Thai food. Nonetheless, the flavors were good and it is a much milder dish so I would recommend this to someone who wants a good flavored curry without too much spice. The prices were also reasonable. All in all, with 2 dishes and 2 glasses of Thai iced tea, service charge included, our bill came to less than 22 pounds. I would come back again to try their other dishes!

Unfortunately, the price doesn't really add up to the rather meager portions and not-exactly-exceptional cooking. It's all perfectly fine, but I can't think of many who would gladly pay higher prices for the same sort of thing you could pick up from a (slightly more classy) buffet. If that sounds harsh, it's because this place is trying very hard to be something it is not. The design is massively over the top: splashes of red and dark wood mixed in with water fountains. It doesn't look tacky, but the place is only as big as my lounge! This is clearly where the extra pound or two on my meal is going. Similarly, they have a ridiculously well stocked bar, again, in a place barely as big as my lounge-room: it's all so out of place and pointless. In the end, Sabai is small, and the food is not worth the expense: it stands to reason that somewhere so small is never very busy. You can get similar food for much less elsewhere.

Sabai can be found if you take a turn off North Street towards the pavilion gardens. Its a surprisingly large establishment and they've obviously forked out on the interior design. They call themselves a 'Thai Gastrobar' which I guess means they are looking to attract people in to the venue just for the bar as well as dining. They have a some outside tables on the pedestrianised street outside which are great for watching the crowds drift past towards the park They also do set menu of 4 (small) courses for under 20 quid.

Admittedly, I do always order the same thing though: chicken satay to start, and beef Pad Thai for a main. But it's always amazing. And so reasonably priced! It's perfect for a lazy evening for me. Tips: it's cash only and the Co-op on the corner's ATM is not always great for being in service. It's also BYOB, but the Co-op DOES have you covered for that! It also is quite small, so I'd call for a reservation if you want to go after 6:30pm on a weekend. Staff are always lovely. Definitely a firm favourite. :)

Update: January 2009…read more Last week they were open again in Seven Dials, and as busy as ever. Not quite sure what is going on - best to ring ahead to check! ------------------------ Update: October 2008 The restaurant in Seven Dials has now closed: the branch at 42 Waterloo Street, Hove, BN3 1AY remains open. Tel: 01273 733 733 ------------------------- This is an incredibly popular Thai restaurant in the Seven Dials area, where booking is essential every night of the week. The reason for its popularity isn't hard to find: a wide range of reasonably authentic Thai dishes, all at very reasonable prices. They do an especially wide range of fish dishes, including the 'Red Snapper' of the title (although I presume this is bought in frozen, since it's not found in UK waters?). They don't have an alcohol license, so bring your own - this also helps keep prices down. Although the menu focuses on fish and meat, there are plenty of vegetarian options (they will do any dish with tofu, on request). If you ask, they will also stir-fry or steam your fish if you prefer it not to be deep fried. Portions of rice and noodles are generous, so order one between two. Expect a two-course dinner for two to come to about £15 a head. The lunch-time menu is very good value too. Despite being very busy, service is always pretty good and friendly and, being a small place, you have no trouble finding someone to help if you need it. Slight downers: because it's small it does get very crowded, so it's not the place for a quiet romantic meal. Also the lavatory is accessed via the outside, and gets a bit chilly in winter. But it would be churlish to deduct a star just for that
