The building itself is pretty small, so you can expect to be cosied up to people a bit, but there is nothing wrong with that for me. Mai Ped Ped Ped (meaning Quite Hot, Very Hot) certainly lives up to its name: the food is tangy, more often falling on the overly-spicy rather than the pleasantly-hot side of the palate. Unfortunately, this is a splinter in the side of their main concept. Lots of small plates that border on too-spicy-to-eat mean that the food can't be enjoyed quickly, nor that the multitude of flavours sit well on a burning tongue. However, it's not like the whole thing falls apart: if the tapas-angle is ignored, the conventional main menu certainly has a lot going for it. I particularly recommend the Drunken Duck (duck cooked in spirits): absolutely top nosh. Everything else I've tried is very tasty, but not particularly memorable: generally, spiciness is the all-pervading flavour. If that sounds overly negative, I certainly don't mean it to: if you're a fan a spicy Thai, Mai Ped Ped Ped certainly has a lot to offer, and could not be more centrally located. It doesn't jostle too heavily with any of the other Market Square/Lanes offerings, and is a great place to start an evening: spicy often leads to much beer consumption on my part! A quick final comment: make sure you get seated upstairs. The restructured town-house ambiance of Mai Ped Ped Ped, while suitably jovial, means that the downstairs area, next to the kitchen, often gets a little humid. Be warned! I went for the Kao Phad - Thai green curry fried rice with chicken, tiger prawns bamboo shoots, aubergines and Thai sweet basil leaves. The flavour was quite nice and had a good level of spiciness. However, the texture was very dry and they were very stingy on the meat and veg - it was verging on just being a plate of greenish rice. Nonetheless, the flavors were good and it is a much milder dish so I would recommend this to someone who wants a good flavored curry without too much spice. The prices were also reasonable. The rice was done well, though it didn't taste especially different to boiled rice, I must say, and the sizzling duck was tasty! The sauce was delicious, however the duck was a little bit fatty in places, which was a bit of a shame. It came with some crunchy onion and a few leaves, which were nice little garnishes to add something to the dish. I ate it all and enjoyed it very much! The service in here was pleasant, but it was a little bit slow and relaxed, especially considering we were the only people in the place! However, the staff were very smiley and polite, so other than this, there was nothing to put you off! As for prices, mine came to £10 (without a drink). I'd say the average main came to around £7-£9, with rice adding another £1.50, so all in all, the prices are pretty decent in here, particularly for the nice portion sizes. Renewed, refurbishsed and really rather good. When you eat in, the service is brisk and friendly. The red curry is very good and quite fiery. The thai pad thai has all the nutty, sticky goodness you'd expect. Save some pennies and take your own booze: the corkage is a quid. Cut costs even more by eating there during the week. There's an all you can eat buffet for a tenner on a Monday. Get 50% of your bill on a Wednesday. And rejoice, they do takeaway and delivery too so you can have it at home, piping hot if you don't want to put your glad rags on. It's all priced very reasonably too. This is a recession busting, cheap and cheerful place to eat and I hope it's here to stay.
