Salt and Pepper Squid
Abby J.

Thoughts as we left the restaurant: the food was tasty, the staff was nice enough to sit us close to closing time, and the the ambience was simple and quiet. We tried the salt and pepper squid appetizer (great), the pomelo salad (fresh with a kick), the chicken curry (warm and hearty), and an elderflower drink (sweet accompaniment to the meal.) All made for a flavorful meal and an enjoyable experience in the Lanes.

Delicious food. I really enjoyed the Massaman Curry with Tofu and Veggies. People were very nice, as well. I would recommend it.

I LOVE this concept. Thai? Oh yeah. Tapas? Absolutely…read more In a converted house with small, homely feeling rooms, this place has a lovely feel and a great menu. The 'Thai Tapas' dishes are exactly what you would expect - the same concept as Spanish tapas, with small portions that you can combine to make a meal. There is a lot more to this place than that though - main dishes are also good. I went for the standard green curry, and it would certainly give any other Thai place in this city a run for its money. They also do a lunch deal for around a fiver for 2 courses. Service could have been faster when I visited, but that might just have been bad luck.

The quality of the food is excellent, but big prices for little meals means this Thai restaurant falls a little short. Mai Ped Ped Ped (meaning Quite Hot, Very Hot) certainly lives up to its name: the food is tangy, more often falling on the overly-spicy rather than the pleasantly-hot side of the palate. Unfortunately, this is a splinter in the side of their main concept. Lots of small plates that border on too-spicy-to-eat mean that the food can't be enjoyed quickly, nor that the multitude of flavours sit well on a burning tongue. However, it's not like the whole thing falls apart: if the tapas-angle is ignored, the conventional main menu certainly has a lot going for it. I particularly recommend the Drunken Duck (duck cooked in spirits): absolutely top nosh. Everything else I've tried is very tasty, but not particularly memorable: generally, spiciness is the all-pervading flavour. If that sounds overly negative, I certainly don't mean it to: if you're a fan a spicy Thai, Mai Ped Ped Ped certainly has a lot to offer, and could not be more centrally located. It doesn't jostle too heavily with any of the other Market Square/Lanes offerings, and is a great place to start an evening: spicy often leads to much beer consumption on my part! A quick final comment: make sure you get seated upstairs. The restructured town-house ambiance of Mai Ped Ped Ped, while suitably jovial, means that the downstairs area, next to the kitchen, often gets a little humid. Be warned! UPDATE: My fiancee wanted me to add that the Thai Green Curry is the best she's ever had, and well worth the price!

This is a relatively new restaurant that has opened up in the heart of the Lanes. The premises are massive, spread out over two floors with a fantastic roof terrace for those sunny Brighton days (few and far between as they are at the moment!). Although bright and airy, I felt the restaurant lacked a little ambiance and atmosphere. I came here with a large group of work friends and the service was great, all the food delivered quickly and at the same time. There is a varied drinks menu and I could definitely recommend the New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. They also have a comprehensive cocktail list which I didn't sample on this occasion. Now for the important part - the food! For starter I went for the soft shell crab which was absolutely delicious, and I would highly recommend it. Also exceptional was the pudding - green tea cheese cake - nom nom nom! Unfortunately, it was the main course that rather let the meal down. I went for the Kao Phad - Thai green curry fried rice with chicken, tiger prawns bamboo shoots, aubergines and Thai sweet basil leaves. The flavour was quite nice and had a good level of spiciness. However, the texture was very dry and they were very stingy on the meat and veg - it was verging on just being a plate of greenish rice. Maybe this is how the dish is meant to be served but it just wasn't for me. It was also accompanied by a clear soup that was ok, but again not that full of flavour. Having said that, the menu is very reasonably priced and I will definitely be back to try out some more dishes.

And for those sunny days in Brighton (if there are any), there is a rooftop terrace that looks quite nice. Will definitely be coming back for that in the summer. My friend and I both ordered a Thai ice tea but it was too sweet for both of us. However, things did look up. I ordered the chicken tom yum kuay teow noodles and as promised, it was quite spicy. For someone of Southeast Asian descent, it was a proper level of spice but I would air on the side of caution and ask them to make it less spicy if you are a spice novice. For me, it was perfect. Very satisfying and well-flavored. My friend ordered some prawn curry dish. For me, it was a bit on the sweet side but that is typical of Western-prepared Thai food. Nonetheless, the flavors were good and it is a much milder dish so I would recommend this to someone who wants a good flavored curry without too much spice. The prices were also reasonable. All in all, with 2 dishes and 2 glasses of Thai iced tea, service charge included, our bill came to less than 22 pounds. I would come back again to try their other dishes!

Unfortunately, the price doesn't really add up to the rather meager portions and not-exactly-exceptional cooking. It's all perfectly fine, but I can't think of many who would gladly pay higher prices for the same sort of thing you could pick up from a (slightly more classy) buffet. If that sounds harsh, it's because this place is trying very hard to be something it is not. The design is massively over the top: splashes of red and dark wood mixed in with water fountains. It doesn't look tacky, but the place is only as big as my lounge! This is clearly where the extra pound or two on my meal is going. Similarly, they have a ridiculously well stocked bar, again, in a place barely as big as my lounge-room: it's all so out of place and pointless. In the end, Sabai is small, and the food is not worth the expense: it stands to reason that somewhere so small is never very busy. You can get similar food for much less elsewhere.

Sabai can be found if you take a turn off North Street towards the pavilion gardens. Its a surprisingly large establishment and they've obviously forked out on the interior design. They call themselves a 'Thai Gastrobar' which I guess means they are looking to attract people in to the venue just for the bar as well as dining. They have a some outside tables on the pedestrianised street outside which are great for watching the crowds drift past towards the park They also do set menu of 4 (small) courses for under 20 quid.

I guess there's always a danger of disappointment when a restaurant comes so highly recommended, but I just didn't find Sukhothai to be all that outstanding! I am a big fan of Thai food and hence, well versed in the many Thai restaurants of Brighton. Long story short, I've had better! The restaurant itself is comfortable and traditionally decked-out- it's a nice enough space in which to dine, sure! And the waitresses were friendly and attentive, possibly a little too attentive, since there weren't many customers to tend to. The food, however, was just a bit...unexceptional. I missed the ornate garnishes at Muang Thai and the tasty dishes at Thai Orchid. My green curry was fine, the flavours were good, but it wasn't nearly spicy enough. My dining companion's Pad Thai was also tasty, but there were no peanuts!! All in all, pretty standard food in a nice enough restaurant. The location near the seafront is handy if you're visiting, but not so great if you live in a residential area out of town.

A group of us had planned to go for dinner elsewhere but our first choice was fully booked, so we wandered a few streets along to this place, to see whether they could squeeze us in. Being a Thursday night, we'd been a little shocked about how packed the first place was but, happily, Sukhothai Palace was completely empty, so fitting us in was no bother at all. The woman seated us at a lovely table and handed us the menus. The decor in really nice in here - it felt a lot more upmarket than I had been expecting actually and I was impressed by it all. That being said, the atmosphere was a little lacking, with us being the only customers in the place for the majority of the time we were in there. The menu is great - there is so much choice and variety that I doubt anyone who struggle to find something they liked the sound of. I opted for the sizzling duck with jasmine rice. The food arrived and the portions were hearty, which is always a plus in my book. The rice was done well, though it didn't taste especially different to boiled rice, I must say, and the sizzling duck was tasty! The sauce was delicious, however the duck was a little bit fatty in places, which was a bit of a shame. It came with some crunchy onion and a few leaves, which were nice little garnishes to add something to the dish. I ate it all and enjoyed it very much! The service in here was pleasant, but it was a little bit slow and relaxed, especially considering we were the only people in the place! However, the staff were very smiley and polite, so other than this, there was nothing to put you off! As for prices, mine came to £10 (without a drink). I'd say the average main came to around £7-£9, with rice adding another £1.50, so all in all, the prices are pretty decent in here, particularly for the nice portion sizes. This was a really pleasant experience and I'll probably be back to try more!

The interior has had a welcome makeover, with a much fresher look, new flooring and much nicer furniture - bigger tables and much more comfortable chairs. The toilets are also much improved (and not before time). Overall, the ambience is pleasant and relaxed. The menu has rolled forward from the Little Buddha, so may change at some point soon, but the food we had this evening was an improvement on the Little Buddha - the soups was still very good, but my main course (a ginger and spring onion dish - I'm not good on Thai descriptions) seemed to have fresher flavours. The bill for two courses and corkage for two people (they do BYO but also have a licence) was a reasonable £22. Service was friendly and efficient, but to be fair it was fairly quiet as we went late. Take-away also available.
