The food is no doubt, great. But here are my issues. I went there Monday night to place an order to go. No issues. The place wasn't too packed, it had about 9 guests. I ended up waiting for 45 minutes. I noticed that they were making numerous to go plates for either friends or family because the ones who left with the food came out from the kitchen, gathered up the kids, then left. This took about 20 minutes. My food hadn't been started on. It was started on after. Second, the sushi portions are extremely small!!! No bigger than the width of a kielbasa sausage. This is a classic example of a no frills, strip mall restaurant that in its no frills-ness is doing everything right. Japanese and Korean is what's on the sign and that's what you get. No doubt a Korean menu at the core, but with the addition of a sushi bar. Of this I was skeptical at first, but who cares when Kodori gets both the sushi and Korean right?! Sushi is good. Above average. Maybe among the best to be found in this 'hood. Prices are more than fair. Beverage options include a nice list of Imported beers, wines, soju, Japanese soda, teas. Meals always start with banchan, as typical of Korean restaurants. However, they also give miso and salad (similar to what you'd expect of Japanese). These are complimentary and filling. On this visit, me and my 8-year-old started with a few maki rolls and an order of fried pork gyoza (way good, especially the dipping sauce). For entrees she had the Bibimbap with galbi. I had the bone-in galbi and rice. Both delicious and good value. Service and atmosphere are no frills, but the place feels good--and above all, tastes good. Family run and honest. It was worth the hour drive for some decent sushi. Food options are great, taste was delicious, restaurant was nice and clean, and the staff were amazing. But there was a minor downside with our server. His attitude was great but he wasn't knowledgeable about the menu items and we had a little misunderstanding with our order. Came here for lunch during the week- I do believe the time may have impacted my review, I'd suspect higher-traffic times food quality goes up as this seems to be a very popular location for the area. Customer service was fine, with exception of the Philadelphia roll the prices were definitely too high for the quality (see pictures). I'd give their overall food quality a C-/D+ (or 2.0- out of 5). Customer Service C+ (2.75 out of 5). Time for food to come out - great (5/5) as I saw the sushi being prepared, which is great... but that alone wasn't redemptive. [Paid for - Philadelphia Roll] The smoked salmon tasted if it was on its last leg. It was edible but vaguely sour as if the due-by date had passed. Recently passed but definitely passed. If you love salmon you would've tasted the sourness immediately... doused in enough soy sauce/wasabi/ginger anyone would've missed it but I *LOVE* the taste of salmon (smoked, raw, broiled, everything) so I dont drown sushi in other flavors so was taken aback at the taste. And given smoked salmon is technically a 'cooked' sushi, ouch. But it was about $4.50 which is much cheaper than what I'm used to for Philadelphia Rolls elsewhere so this raises the score (C). [Paid for - Spicy Tuna Salad] The spicy tuna salad was very disappointing (see pics), more expensive, less fresh-tasting and much smaller than the roll which was $3 less. The salad's lettuce was obviously from the hard edges of an iceberg lettuce ball & was wilted (see pics) the food was edible, small, and not fresh. The "spicy" part tasting like Wishbone French Dressing with sprinkles of cayenne pepper in it .... splattered on top of old tuna chunks. Again, think gas station.I didn't finish it because I *couldn't* finish it. And if you knew me... my inability to finish this is pretty damning. (D-/F+) [Paid for - Salmon Sashimi] Drown in soy sauce, wasabi and ginger was great! Without them, was.... edible? Not fresh, not worth the price size, taste, and freshness wise (see pics). (D+) Maryland is a coastal state and Waldorf is eastern Maryland so why isnt the seafood fresher? Heck, there is a supermarket a mile away, why isn't the seafood fresher? I've had landlocked Texan supermarket sushi fresher than this. [Complimentary - Kimchi and other Korean dish appetizers] The kimchi and other freebies with the food looked and tasted as if they were served in the dishes they were served in days earlier... like they were leftover from customer rejects. When briefly tasted it tasted like old food. Now, I love kimchi, have eaten at Korean restaurants, & even have a few books on fermenting foods so it certainly wasn't just a dislike of the cuisine. It tasted as if it was exposed to excess aeration due to poor storage ----it was just sour-tasting, seemed old, and was not good. (F) [Complimentary] The bowl the miso was served in a very heavily used bowl (see pic) where the paint was deeply chipped off. I wish Id seen that before I ate it... but was free and pretty good regardless of it missing any seaweed. I can't confidently say I didn't eat any straggily paint chips. (D+/D) I think they should nix the complimentary foods if they're basically just... compost. I could tell this is a small operation so I feel like a mega-jerk because I'm usually very forgiving but I definitely wasted my money here? It was equivalent to buying 7-11 gas station sushi, chugging a chilled beer bottle in a paper bag, and eating it in on the curb --- except I had to pay for a server and restaurant prices. I'll never come back or recommend this place to anyone. Maybe it is better on the weekends and evenings? Either way, drive out further. read more

The food here is delicious. The decor and ambience is nothing to write home about. This is what you would call your local, hole in the wall with yummy food. My husband is half Korean and he knows good Asian food and this is definitely one of those places. It is a small place and can fill up fast during lunchtime or on the weekend for dinner time. My husband loves to get the Galbi which is a Korean dish. He gets this every time and always enjoys it. I am not a big sushi eater but there is one roll here that I absolutely love and it is called the Redskin roll. It has imitation crab inside, among other things, and it is deep fried and covered with their Kodori spicy sauce. It is delicious! It seems a little pricey to me at $13.50 but I guess all sushi can be. It is delicious enough where it worth paying that to me once in a while. They serve everyone a miso soup and small ginger dressing side salad which just consists of iceberg lettuce. It is simple and plain but I always really enjoy it. They bring out several small dishes of kimchi and other Asian type bonchon. If you're looking for a fancy, date night dinner place this is probably not your first go to choice but if you just want some great Asian food then this is your place!! read more

Always came here every week with my mom and brothers after work. Today on 8/15/2019 they got my moms order wrong. No big deal. She had trouble explaining herself to the server. There was a language barrier. No big deal either. My mom was asking about the scallops thats supposed to come in her food and she couldn't understand what the Spanish speaking woman was saying and the server couldn't understand her. She asked the girl twice, she went to the back when she finally understood. Another server came back and brought my mom the sauce that was supposed to come with the food that the other server forgot. My mom asked again and the other server got snippy saying "Yeah, I know its coming when its ready" in her annoyed "happy" voice AFTER THE FIRST SERVER SAID THERE WERE NO SCALLOPS BUT LO AND BEHOLD THERES SCALLOPS. 10 seconds later the first server went to the back and said something to the other server insulting and the other second server agreed. We aren't stupid nor deaf. How rude. Can't you wait until you're out of sight before insulting a paying customer? Loud enough to be heard? They were literally at the door way to the kitchen. I asked the first server for her name she said Karina then she said Cindy (the Latina woman who needs to get off her phone and stop being loud) and the other one is Yuri or Julie or whatever. I still gave a tip even though they don't deserve it. This was an unfortunate experience. We won't be coming back after they made us uncomfortable with their unprofessionalism but hey the food here is good and they finally have the A/C going. read more

The Kim sushi is the best!!!!!!!! Soooo good. The entrees are 4 star... very good but not the best I've had. Service is very prompt. As soon as you walk in you are asked what drink... and provided kimchi and all the fixings... soup and salad. I'd come back here for sushi only as this was the main delight here!! So, since I wrote my last review which I wrote when I was 'hangry', I've had a few months to calm down. We wanted sushi, and so I suggested we try this place since I never really gave them a chance (well, technically they never let me give them a chance...) We got there at around 8:50. All the signs were off so I was confused because their door and Yelp says they close at 9:30. There were quite a few people inside so we decided to go in. When we went in, we got strange looks from the staff and asked if we were going to take our order to go. I don't like taking food to go, so I said no. She informed us that they're about to close, and when I asked if they still close at 9:30 she said they're closing early today. I'd rather eat somewhere else then take food to go, so I said thanks anyways. She told us we could sit down, so I gave in. And I'm very happy that I did! After that awkward entrance, the staff was actually very friendly. We were given 3 small trays of (I think it's called Banchan?), a salad with an orange dressing, and soup broth with tofu. I'm not sure exactly what they're called (or what they are) I've been to many sushi places but I've never got these complimentary dishes before! They were all very tasty! For my sushi, I got a maryland roll and my husband got a California roll and a shrimp tempera roll. I came here 2 days ago and I haven't been able to stop thinking about that Maryland roll! Soooo it's Friday afternoon at work and I am craving some sushi. Came across this place after a yelp search and the rest is a wrap! From drooling at my fellow yelpers' pics I already knew I wanted to try the Maryland Roll and the Spicy Crab Roll. When I arrived I was amazed at how I never even noticed this place off of 301 smh. Probably because its so small (I'm not even exaggerating), but don't let its size fool you they make some bomb ass sushi! For a Friday evening around 7pm, all but 2 tables were full. I went to the register and let them know I was ordering take-out and a gentleman happily gave me an order sheet and pen. The order sheet was very straightforward and on the back listed each rolls' ingredients and if it's fried, baked, raw, spicy, etc. I ended up choosing the Sunshine and Sunrise Rolls for my fiancé and the Maryland and Spicy Crab Rolls for myself. As I sat and waited for my order, I noticed a steady stream of people coming in. I was quoted about a 15min wait but waited about 30min - no biggie though as I wasn't in a rush. Once ready I quickly checked my order, grabbed some chop sticks and headed for the door. The ride home was pure torture!!! When I finally settled in and opened the styrofoam container it was like the Gods were singing too me - Rolls so perfectly prepared and arranged UGH I couldn't wait to dig in! ALL OF THE ROLLS WERE SUPERB and I will definitely be ordering them again but I also want to try others as I am sure they are all ah-maz-balls!! First impressions: This is a very, VERY chill place. This is a small unassuming little japanese/korean restaurant. It's obviously very popular given the lunch crowd today. The staff are very pleasant and extremely efficient. They carry American and Japanese beers. The menu is very well stocked with both Korean and Japanese items. The food is delicious and the portion size is perfect. Superb sushi. I have been eating here almost every week since the covid lockdown, and the sushi is always great. The staff are always friendly. Just recently chose to order the sushi platter for Father's Day and it was fantastic. The pork dumplings are also delicious. My daughter says the sushi here has a better texture than a place in VA I took her to awhile back. This restaurant wants to serve Japanese and Korean cuisine but ends up serving half a-- imitation Japanese and imitation Korean foods. The tempura is terrible. The batter is thick! They don't even use the proper tempura batter! The tempura sauce is soy sauce with sugar. The sweet soy chicken is really pathetic - small pieces of chicken dipped in very thick batter deep fried and the swimming in thick sweet soy sauce concoction that makes the batter soggy. The kimchi and other Korean side dishes/ appetizers are awful. The tempura sushi rolls are swimming in mayonnaise. the Gyoza soup is supposed the be the Korean Duk Man Doo but it came out without the duk and they put carrots and cucumber in the soup! not a good match. You don't put carrots and cucumber in Duk ManDo! It just does not taste right! The dining room feels icky and sticky. It's raining and very humid today and they decide not to have the Airconditioning on and open the door instead. The dining room is humid and uncomfortable. Really not a good dining experience. I would not get sushi here since the refrigerated case that contains the sushi is dripping in condensation since they decided to turn off the AC and let the humidity in.! It is a tiny place, we kind of enjoyed it, we were hungry; it was too express and practical for our taste. The food was nothing to come back for, but ok for a quick stop. For sure never order the seafood salad it is just a punch of lettuce with fake crab, no close to ok at all; the sushi rolls were ok, too much sauce and very little fish pieces. The only reason I am giving 3 stars its for the miso soup and salad they give as entries to everyone and the service was ok, according to the kind of place. They charge way too much "mandatory" gratuity 18% and I found that rude, does not give space to tip up according to the service and the food. Oh Kodori! :D Back when I first discovered the Waldorf area, this was my go to every time I was in there. I love sushi and am super picky, so I was in shock when this little hole in the wall was serving up top notch sushi! Ohhhh yeahhhh :D I usually order my food to go. I get the hurricane roll, spicy California, and a green salad with extra ginger dressing! It is soooooo delicious and actually very filling. I have yet to dine in because it is a very small space. I feel like I would get claustrophobic in there! But maybe one day so I can sample a few more items on the menu! It is a very clean establishment, great customer service, and there is plenty of parking for customers. The only true downfall about this place is when you call in to place an order for pickup, whatever time they tell you it will be ready, add 10-15 minutes too it. When it comes to food, I am always on time, and not once was my food done when they said it would be. It was only recently when I added a few minutes to my wait time that my food was ready to go as soon as I walked in. Favs: The hurricane roll and the ginger dressing are toooo good! Very Fresh! As one goes farther out from DC proper, into the outer edges of the metropolitan area, the general belief is that the quality of the ethnic food pales with every additional mile. Certainly, on the surface, Charles County, a rapidly growing jurisdiction just south of Prince George's, suffers from this. Even with its expanding population, it is not yet known as a "mecca" of any particular ethnic cuisine (not yet anyway). For example, when one thinks of Waldorf, Charles County's most prominent destination (with its host of strip malls and storefronts on both sides of Rte. 301), neither Japanese food nor Korean food comes to mind particularly (or any other ethnic food for that matter). However, there it is...Kodori (plying its trade as a dual Japanese and Korean establishment amidst the many chain restaurants and fast food outlets that dot the area's landscape). Relatively speaking, Kodori's Japanese menu is actually decently representative (ranging from tonkatsu, various tempuras, teriyakis, several kinds of udons, donburis, and, of course, an array of sushi rolls). On the Korean side, it features galbi, bulgogi, grilled pork, and various kinds of bibimbap (as its main offerings). At my table, I was able to sample both the Waldorf Roll and the Hurricane Roll (from Kodori's long list of special rolls). The Waldorf Roll, consisting of tuna, yellowtail, and eel topped with a signature "crunch sauce," was competently assembled and admittedly tasty (despite its slight girth and puzzling lack of real crunch). The Hurricane Roll, consisting of fried shrimp and imitation crab topped with hot sauce, was dense, smallish in stature, but passable. Both rolls relied heavily on their drizzled sauces. Indeed, it was hard to immediately gauge the freshness of the fish and the vinegared rice with the force of the sauces (which served both to assail the diner and mask the fish and rice as needed). The one Korean dish at my table, the galbi bibimbap consisted of a typical layout of toppings (though, the fried egg was overcooked and the veggies were less than optimally fresh and snappy). The amount of rice underneath too was meager (and was missing the crunchy bottom layer that marks the best dolsot "earthernware" bibimbaps). The saddest part of the dish was the utterly unimpressive slivers of meat that the kitchen passed off as their version of "galbi." The beef was generally tough, overly lean, and dry. The accompanying banchan were limited, served in little slotted trays (rather than in individual side dishes), and lacked "zip" in its texture and taste. An opening salvo of run-of-the-mill miso soup, an unconvincing salad with orange/ginger dressing, and tiny beef dumplings (that seemed to be gathered from the freezer aisle at H-Mart) did not impress either. In the end, Kodori was a better Japanese restaurant than a Korean one on this given night. However, when compared with other Japanese and Korean restaurants in the greater DC area (especially, those more proximate to the city itself) or where there are a greater number of Asians in the constituent population, Kodori simply seems amateurish. I guess, it is not their fault. An old classmate of mine, who worked three jobs and also had to care for his younger siblings, use to say, "Do enough to get by. Life, in total, is hard enough." "Just do enough to get by," he said. "Sometimes, that's all anyone can do. Hopefully, nobody will notice." Believe me. I understand. read more

Sushi. Sushi. Sushi. Superb. Superb. Superb. But I digress. Swung by for a late lunch on a Saturday. Doesn't look like much from the outside; seedy, frankly. However, nearly two o'clock and the place is still doing a very brisk trade. That's a good sign. We didn't start off on a decent foot, however. I was looking for gluten free soy sauce; they didn't have any, but I decided to give the place I try anyway. I went to Food Lion to buy GF soy sauce after we ordered. And order, we did. Garden salad with ginger dressing. Seaweed salad. Shrimp spring rolls. Banchans. Yaki udon. Chicken teriyaki. And, we had maki rolls: Cucumber. California. Tuna. Salmon. Spicy Tuna. Spicy Salmon. And the Pain in the Butt special roll. A feast. And spectacular. I think you can tell a lot about a place by the basic sushi rolls. Let's see a cucumber roll. How about a plain tuna roll. The basic rolls tell a great deal about the care and quality put into every roll. I would hope the elaborate special rolls, creations from the mind of the chef, are great. In some restaurants, I've seen the "simple" rolls delegated down to the most junior member of the team; the master infrequently preparing the basics. Anyway, simple rolls: and Kodori has nailed it. And the one "special" roll we had which was, frankly, perhaps the best sushi roll I've eaten in at least a year. One other comment about the sushi. I'm not a fan of using scrape (but I understand the economies of it). At Kodori, it appears that they do use scrape, but mix it with freshly chopped meat. The spicy tuna and the spicy salmon were both very good. They'd fare well in a competition; I could have used a bit more kick, but I say that about nearly every roll. I would almost say it about the Pain the Butt special roll, but I shall not. In terms of GF eating. You can eat GF, but I'd worry about cross contamination. They didn't seem to be all that "up" on GF. I did, however, leave them the bottle of LaChoi soy sauce I purchased, so they'll have GF soy sauce the next time I stop in. And I will stop in again. Oh, and a note about my score. They've earned a solid four in my book. Now, frankly, the sushi was a five, easily, but the service was, as another Yelper mentions, er, choppy. Had the service been a little more attentive, had they perhaps been more accommodating with the GF, certainly they would have rated five stars. But, I'm tell you, that one roll was the best I've had in at least a year. read more

I like this place. It is small and quaint. Don't get discouraged if you can't find it at first because this place is easy to pass. The bulgogi was good but not great. I lived in Korea for a year so I think my expectations were a little high. The sushi was good and the kimchee was alright. They have soju here so definitely grab a bottle. When I go to Waldorf I would pick this 10 times out 10 over one of the chain restaurants. read more

One of my world wide TOP sushi places! Sushi and food are always amazing! Top quality, which I can't find anywhere else. Staff is friendly and it's nice to be remembered and greeted. The soup and salads are delicious and I can always get more of the little dishes if needed. I have not found a roll or sashimi I don't like. I have not heard colored the menu too much, as I simply have to have their sushi. Friends, however, love the HUGE lunch box choices and the Korean BBQ (Gal Bi). Kodori is THE BEST in Japanese food. This is my mother's favorite place to eat and she knows Japanese food because she is Japanese! It's a family owned restaurant and they are always very nice and accommodating when we dine there. The sushi is made fresh to order and the hot food is great also. I always order the Sweet Dream Chicken dish from the kitchen which is always great! Kodori is becoming so popular that they are outgrowing the location they are currently in and if you go during dinner time, about 7ish, you may have to wait for a table. There is no waiting area so we usually go around 5:30pm. Weekends are the most crowded but the food is well worth the wait. There's also plenty of parking so no worries about that. They do have a sushi bar area if you want to sit there but even that area has limited seating. Maybe six chairs. read more

I came here for a birthday dinner with the in-laws. Set in Waldorf, you could easily pass by this place. However, I was pleasantly surprised. Inside, the interior is small, cute, and cozy. The waitstaff and the sushi guy are all nice and friendly. I ordered their donkatsu, which I was quite disappointed in the fact that it was really thin, but the upside was that it came out really crispy. The donkatsu sauce was great - thick and syrupy. The banchan was alright, and I actually didn't mind the cucumber moochim. My husband had the galbi bibimbop, which was pretty good (and you can customize the level of spiciness by putting in however much kochujang you want). My in-laws loved their mandoo gook, which came with an abundance of dumplings and a nice hearty broth. We also ordered some galbi on the side, and while not the most charcoaled as I'd like, it was still tender and had good solid flavor (a little more sweet than savory). Good food at a great price! In effort to broaden my horizons and culture this palate of mine, I tried this place after the homie @Kendra W. told me I should try it out and I'm glad she did! When I got there the place was super busy...good sign. So I got carry out and took my lunch to the parking lot. I had the Bul Go Gi Box and enjoyed that entire box! It came with rice on top of marinated beef, salad, sushi, kimchi, tempura and some other green spinach-like stuff that was pretty good.
