I work downtown and have been wanting to try Kobi-Q but for some reason hadn't until yesterday. I totally wish I had sooner. It s in a cool old building, there's a vault door that leads to the kitchen, and a large skylight over the bar and dining area with hanging plants. The Korean fried chicken is so good, I loved the dry rubbed ones the best, might actually be on the list of best fried chicken I have had. The Crab Rangoon was absolutely fantastic as well. I had Spicy BBQ Pork & Rice Cakes for my entree and asked for it to be extra spicy, a menu option, but found it rather bland, it lacked any of big bold character that I usually associate with Korean, however my experience with Korean food is rather limited especially compared to other Asian cuisines so I'll be reserving judgement on that dish. Overall great place to be, the service was top notch, and those Crab Rangoon and KFC wings were amongst the finest examples I have had of those items. Better than expected! There was only 1 server working that day, but service was still relatively fast. We came in for lunch and ordered the bibimbop with spicy pork, hot tea, and spicy tofu soup. The bibimbop with spicy pork was flavorful and hearty. The spicy tofu soup came hot, was filling and came with a side of rice. The hot tea was comforting and soothing on the stomach, but scalding when first served. Nice interior with a skylight and greenery. There was an older movie playing on the side that was entertaining. Prices are on the higher end for the dishes offered, but with the small Asian population in the area it's understandable and the flavors were good. Would recommmend. read more

I had very little expectations coming to Kobe Q. There are so many variations that can be had with Korean food so you never quite know what you're going to get when you go to a Korean restaurant. Kobe Q was surprisingly a great spot for delicious, flavor-filled food that makes you feel comforted and like you're eating at home. The service was a little spotty, but we didn't want a lot of attention and it was normal for the amount of people they had in the restaurant when we were there. We loved the ambience of the restaurant and it felt like we were in Korea inside the restaurant. I can't brag enough about how GOOD the food we had was. My only issue was the kimchi, which I prefer to be more fermented or spicy with more garlic. I enjoyed dinner here on a business trip and was pleasantly met with a beautiful, classic, yet eclectic ambiance in this old building cum restaurant. Having an allergy or catching the sniffles, I came to seek out some warming, spicy soup. It was just what the doctor ordered. I had the spicy tofu soup with beef as recommended by the server. It was chock full of all kinds of good things like mushrooms, large chunks of creamy tofu, red pepper, beef, and kimchi. It was served with an ample side of white rice which I dunked in to cool off the soup cooked in a piping hot stone bowl. Keeping with my theme of "hot", I had hot green tea. While comments abound that some dishes are not authentic, this one tasted great and that was all that mattered to me. Service was good, ambiance was nice and it wasn't too loud. We started with dumplings which were very basic, Spicy BBQ Pork which wasn't very spicy and the steak on top of vegetables, the steak was tough and a knife wasn't part of the roll up so I ate with my hand. I had been wanting to try Kobi Q for a while and was in the mood for noodles so I made my way there. Everyone I interacted with was friendly. The interior was nice. It's not the largest place but it's not tiny either. I ordered a drink and some food to go. They have a wide range of drinks: cocktails, wine, beer, and sake. I opted for a Bushido sake and my boyfriend went with a signature cocktail-Mad Tiger: Japanese whiskey, burnt orange, sage, and bitters. It was very similar to an old fashioned. We got an assortment of appetizers. The edamame is exactly what you'd expect from edamame. The crab Rangoon's were also good. I wasn't a huge fan of the pork dumplings. They were steamed which was fine. I just wasn't a fan of the pork filling. My boyfriend liked them so it's just a personal preference. The beef egg rolls weren't what I would consider an egg roll to be. It was more crispy spring rollesque. I did like the beef filling though. I'd recommend the edamame and the crab Rangoon out of everything we tried. For an entree, I ordered the Toshi Bowl: $12.50 A Vietnamese-inspired noodle bowl topped with grilled pork, veggies, lettuce, and crushed peanuts. It was a huge portion of. Definitely two meals work. The grilled pork was really good and had a good flavor. Everything was fresh. I'd definitely order it again and recommend it. I look forward to returning and trying more offerings. read more

Three Words : Garlic Mama Chicken. That's all that really needs to be said for this review but I'll elaborate. Many may miss the Kobi-Q that used to be in Westport, a mere relic of the past however, I do not share this sentiment. That Kobi-Q has sub-par sushi and substandard service this location though has a focused menu and subsequently, focused staff. The best dish by far on the menu is the succulent garlic mama chicken which has a crispy crunchy exterior covered in sticky no-too-sweet addictive sauce. The texture is something to be desired because I'm still dreaming of it. This dish is best consumed fresh unlike most traditional Chinese food that can withstand refrigeration and reheating this chicken will never be as satisfying as it is fresh out of the fryer and tossed recently. I'm telling you...eat as much as you can, even if that means skipping the rice. Other dishes on the menu are order-able but, none even come close. The crab wontons/Rangoon are a no brainer, of course, because who doesn't love deep fried pockets of creamy goodness? These aren't too heavy or overly filled with cream cheese, they have a light wonton wrapper that has perfect crunch without being overly oily. I liked the sweet and sour sauce as well, it didn't coat your teeth with sugar and had a nice balance. Another great starter is a little more health conscious...and green. That's edamame, which is always something I order if it's offered on the menu. Here at Kobi-Q there aren't any surprises when it comes to the preparation, the beans are fresh and salted and easily pop-able before a meal without filling you up too much (so you can still enjoy your garlic mama chicken) I've also sampled the short ribs which are more like small riblets. They fall off the bone and are very tender and not too fatty, but they still do have noticeable fat which I've been told gives things flavor. Haha, all jokes aside, this dish is tasty but, I wouldn't say it warrants the nearly 30 dollar price tag. The amount of meat to bone ratio, not to mention you only get 8 short (in length) ribs, isn't justified for the price especially because underneath isn't substantial rice but instead a sad salad of sorts. So far, these are some of my only complaints. For it being a trendy Asian fusion restaurant down in Crossroads it doesn't get too busy except for event nights so, it seems to be a safe early dinner option (note they don't stay open too late). read more

TLDR: beautiful interior with good food If you've ever been in a row home in Asia the interior will feel familiar. Right in the middle is a huge skylight which reminds me of the big central openings in traditional Asian row homes. The decor is traditional with enough modern touches to make it feel like a trendy Hong Kong bar. The food was excellent. It is non traditional from Korea in that any bonchon has to be bought. Because it is certainly a decent Korean restaurant I did not think it was anything special. And Priyansha did not care for her green curry at all. Too coconutty she said. Lacking flavor Lupe said. About Priyansha's green curry. I had the beef bi bin bap and the meat could have been more flavorful and was a little tough. And the egg while it did have a runny yolk could have been runnier. Man. On weekends, its the dinner menu all day. The Green Curry was very good and a solid choice for a healthier option - I wish it came with a bit more rice though! The Tonkatsu Cutlet was not warm when it was brought out and too much breading (not enough meat). The portion size of the Tonkatsu Cutlet is quite a bit smaller than when I came here a couple years ago... so would recommend the lunch special for best pricing. Love the natural lighting and plants at this place! The service was great and the food was delicious! I had the Korean wings, I did half with sauce and the other half rub. Both had great flavor! The shrimp Bi Bim Bap was really good as well. The only disappointment was the shrimp had no seasoning and was just plain. Next time I'll try another meat option. Although aesthetically pleasing, the food lacked the flavor of authentic Korean food. The food came out hot and fast, and the waiter was kind and helpful. It is a small place, but not too small, with a clean look. You have to pay to park in front of the building. I gave a three-star because the food wasn't nasty, but wasn't authentic, and more of an inspired taste. I ordered online from Kobi Q and my food was ready in about 10 minutes, which was perfect. It was raining so I went with the kimchi jigae. There is something about eating it while watching K dramas that just feels right. Warm, spicy, and super comforting. I also got the chicken tonkatsu and really liked the sauce they serve with it. Each dish with its own personality and distinct flavors, but all were right on the mark and nary a dish that we didn't like. We got the sichuan dry rub wings which don't look like much, but the instant I took a bite, I knew my tongue had found its match. Spicy yet a well blended hint of sweetness hidden underneath. The garlic mama chicken was a great contrast and still delectable. The tteokbokki took me back to a rainy day in Korea (the only shame being that we were eating it in 90 degree weather here in KC) but the cheese pulls were still insane. Also great value for your food. Decor was very cool, the mood lighting hit pretty hard made my date look like an absolute snacc. The servers were very kind, timely, and deserve a shoutout for seating us so close to their closing time. Kobi-Q has been one of those places where I think, "Maybe next time, I'll check this place out." Well, today was that day, and I would have been fine if that day never came at all. This is not to say I had a bad experience, it was a mix of nice and...meh. Overall, mid. It's crazy because I've heard good things from others. I normally only order a single entrée if I'm eating by myself, but I'm a fiend for crab rangoons and couldn't pass it up. They came out less puffy and crispier than the average crab rangoons--which I appreciated. The sauce that came with it had a yellower hue than the usual orange, and the flavor held a tang that left me wanting more. I think the sauce complimented the cream cheese very well! For my main dish, I was super excited to try their tofu stew (soondubu jjigae). I chose the beef option! It came out...not how I was expecting. You know how tofu stew is served in those stone bowls that retain heat so well, the dish is still bubbling and boiling as it's being brough to the table? Not this stew. This stew was stagnant in its stone (?) bowl. Okay...what about the flavor? I knew it was going to be spicy based on color and past tofu stew experiences, but I was surprised by a flavor profile similar to that of a Chinese hot and sour soup. Not a traditional Korean taste. The tofu stew was accompanied with a small bowl of rice, which is essential. However, the rice to stew ratio was far too wide, and I found myself for want of more rice only after getting through 1/3 of the stew! This is where my biggest disappointment developed, not just in the lacking of rice, but in the lacking of service. At 8pm on a Tuesday, the restaurant wasn't all that busy with maybe 4 tables occupied and 2 servers available. Between me (solo dining) and the tables I was sandwiched between (couples dining), the servers would ask the classic, "How's everything going?" to all but my lonesome self. Yes, I could have spoken up for myself if I so desperately wanted more rice, but the stew was already a whopping seventeen bucks. If I had to muster the energy to ask for more rice and end up being charged even more...the despair. I'd much rather be paid attention to as a customer and be satisfied enough from that interaction to indulge in more rice. The one time my server did loop back around for me was after I ate the rest of the riceless tofu stew. He filled my water! Thanks! It was time for the check by then. read more

I visited Kobi Q last month on a weeknight. There's seating at the bar as well as booths and tables. The menu is very vegan friendly - there were several options that can be made vegan with various substitutions called out for each dish. I ordered the Bi Bim Bap - a mixed rice bowl with carrots, zucchini, pickled cucumber, bean sprouts, kimchi, and a choice of protein, with a side of gochujang sauce. I picked the tofu ($15.50) but there was also Spicy BBQ Pork, Marinated Beef, Chicken, or Shrimp. I enjoyed the ambience, food, and variety of vegan options so I'll be back to try something new. read more

I've been wanting to try this place for a while and it did not disappoint. The flavors of both dishes were so good; savory, sweet and multi-dimension with each bite. The quantity of both dishes was great as well. We were able to take home both of our plates for a leftover meal the next day. My best friend was visiting from Seattle and we are big lovers of Korean food. I saw the menu and figured it was a perfect time to try this place finally! We got both flavors of the Korean Fried Chicken, Bibimbap, Korean BBQ Beef, and Pork Tonkatsu. Let me just say- I would've had pics to share but we inhaled our meal too quickly haha Korean Fried Chicken: CRISPY!!! And the wings are legit wings- no small, pathetic wings like BWW. My favorite between the two was the Szechuan Dry Rub. Gotta give this a try!! Bibimbap: Full of veggies, and the beef was well marinated and flavorful. Perfect amount of rice and protein. Korean BBQ Beef: My husband ate this and I didn't get a bite- but he ate all of it before I could snag one if that says anything! Tonkatsu: PERFECTLY breaded and it was paired with the classic Tonkatsu sauce. Tonkatsu is my favorite dish so I had to try it from here and I'm glad I did. Only thing I would change next time is getting a double portion of rice instead of the slaw that comes with it (I'm not a big slaw personally) In conclusion- absolutely recommend coming here and trying it out!
