So like Joe K said, it's great to see more Korean chicken places in the Kansas City area. (S)KFC is amazing - the crispness of the chicken, the fantastic sauces. It's special. I'm excited just thinking about it. But oh man was I hoping for better. And I think this place could get there, if they can change some things. Joyce and Brandy laid it out well, so I'll just echo some main points: - The food could be better. Apparently it has been before. What I saw felt pretty low effort, the crispiness wasn't there. (South) Korean Fried Chicken is amazing because even with those delicious sauces, the chicken stays crispy. Best of both worlds! These wings were soggy. I didn't feel great after eating the meal. It wasn't ideal. - The service was nonexistent. I came up to the human at the counter, who directed me not to talk to her but to put in my order on the screen to the side. I hate these. I hate them so much. The UX on the terminal was clunky, the navigation in particular was so bad that there were whole sections of the menu that seemed to be missing. I now know to swipe left on the headers to scroll right to a second page of root-level categories, but be honest, just reading that in a sentence is confusing and annoying. Some people may like kiosks. That's fine! But mandating them is awkward and obnoxious. - I'm still on the service. There's a big menu. There are paper menus. There are little signs advertising fun looking items. I already know what I want. It is so much easier and more enjoyable to order with a real human and get their help. Why put the added friction of learning a clunky interface? An employee would be fluent in the system even if it's bad. And if my case is any indication, it's not helping their sales. I would totally have ordered more dishes if I'd known that was an option. It just looked like they were out so it wasn't available. - After putting in the order, I was prompted for a tip for the service. Which just felt like a coup de grace to my psyche. - It felt like there was no heart here. That's probably an ownership issue. I'm sympathetic to a point, it's not easy in general and there's a lot of pressure to cut costs (especially with the tariff arsonist disrupting supply chains). But the vibe here was dismal, you could feel it in the food and the staff. The space itself seems set up well to have large groups and good times. Could be a fun spot. But right now, the impression I get is that aside from the wings the kitchen does a lot of prepackaged instant food. So I'm not sure what they're trying to be - a decent wing place, or more of a fast-food/gas station type of spot. A vending machine with a deep fryer. One thing that I love about this place is that they have a kiosk to order from. I love being able to scroll through a menu, especially when it's a new place with a lot to choose from. I found that very convenient and much more relaxed than ordering at a counter with a line behind you. We ordered the wing portion of Soy Garlic Chicken and Pork Dumplings. I have never had wings like this before. They were breaded, and just the right amount of saucy. I liked having disposable gloves as an option to handle them, that is a game changer for me. They were very sweet, which I am not the biggest fan of. They did have a decent amount of heat, which I was warned about from other reviews. It was the perfect level of heat for me, I don't know if I would try their spicy version. I thought the Pork Dumplings were the star of the meal. They were large in size and cooked perfectly. Ordering at the screen you scroll a bunch of pages and find everything from Ramen noodle packets, to prepackaged sushi. Crab Rangoon had a really good flavor, but the wings themselves were the prize here. The flavor was a good honey sweet with the hint of garlic. Made to order chicken strips in a large variety of ways. I arrived ready to get Korean fried chicken with, what we refer to as, snow or crack - a mixture of sweet onion with a sweet mayo/yogurt sauce. The chicken was okay but slightly overcooked making it strong and dry in spots. There was plenty of onion on it but lacked the creamy sauce I expect. As usually the onion and sauce are mixed together and have fused. This had the cream poured on the dry chicken and then the raw onion on top. The can of coke was slightly cold but would have been better with a fountain drink. The price was around $25 for the chicken, can coke and 15% tip. It is enough chicken for 2+ people or 2-3 meals for 1, depending on how much you eat/setting. They also had Korean dishes like bulgogi. We were searching for Korean Fried Chicken and 92 Chicken was the closest match we could find in the greater KC area with good reviews. Parking was easy and there were lots of tables for groups. We ordered from a Kiosk with helpful pictures. The worker at the counter was helpful in answering our questions. Soft music playing in the background and the seating area was clean. Pork Dumpling came out of the kitchen within 5-10 minutes. It was crunchy and was the perfect appetizer. Garlic Soy Chicken was succulent, crunchy, the right amount of breading, and a sweat garlic taste with each bite. Caution: there was a mild amount of spice. Spicy Garlic Chicken was not as spicy as expected and was more sweet. It was only one level up from the non-spicy version. The sauce was still good, but it needs to be named something else like sweet chili soy garlic. Overall, solid 4 stars. Pricing was low because there are no servers and there's no fountain drinks. Their Korean fried chicken was amazing! I highly recommend this spot for a quick fix. Super crispy and the flavor was delicious. We also got their jap chae and it was also seasoned very well. This also made for amazing leftovers! Ordering was pretty straightforward. You can order from the kiosk and they serve it pretty quickly. The japchae noodles were overcooked & the dish was overly oily. The bugolgi was fine but also oily. Nothing to write home about. They make decent rice. The chicken tonkatsu was over cooked to the point where it was hard. The only thing exciting about 92 Chicken is the "EZ-Ramen" machines. They also offer buldak options. We got 4 dishes for 53$ which isn't horribly expensive but the portion sizes aren't huge & the food is mediocre. The cashier was nice though. I'm so disappointed with how drastically different the restaurant is from when it first opened to current. Before, there would be people greeting you and offering water, just super friendly. TL;DR: The chicken is good but leans on the more sweet and less spicy side. If that's what you're looking for, this is the place to go. If you want more authentic Korean fried chicken and sides, it's better to go to one of the nearby competitors. This is a decent place to come with friends who can't eat spicy food. It's too sweet and there's no nuance--it's not spicy, acidic, or savory. The food is never piping hot when you get it. It's just warm, with salt and sugar and the thought of spice. And the prices are too high. I'm honestly not sure why they're charging as much as CM Chicken and bb.q when 92's portions are smaller and the service is nonexistent. You order off a kiosk, get your own cups and water, and bring the ambiance yourself. The great thing about this place, in comparison to their sister chain, CM chicken, is the fact that there are so many more side options. They serve fish cake skewers, ramen, rice cakes, rice noodles, and of course their chicken. They offer the exact same chicken menu as CM chicken. And the taste is pretty similar. They don't offer sweet radish here though sadly. The boneless chicken is a little more dry, and less juicy meat. It tasted more of breading. I wish they would expand their sides a little more that were authentic to Korean side dishes. The chicken is pretty darn salty however and will make you thirsty throughout the day. The flavors are all good but nothing too unique. It does take them a long time to make because they have to double fry it but if you have the time and not in a huge rush, it's worth trying. This is our new favorite crispy Korean chicken wing place! Our old fave was CM chicken but this place has now moved up due to their expanded menu, room, and location! Conveniently.located across Oriental Market and Tou Le Jour! They have added a variety of new fresh wing flavors as well as expanded their space. Service was always, good to decent but was even better this last time that we went. Parking is available as they share the large parking lot with the other places mentioned.
