Love it when businesses converted historic buildings, like this freight house across the tracks from Union States, into new businesses. The large airy room is perfect for this restaurant. And it has its own parking lot too. Easy to reach as well from KC's amazing Main Street streetcar. Wonderful service, a high point. Friends had urged me for years to try Jack Stack BBQ but I always seem to end up at Gates or Arthur Bryant's. So glad I made it finally to Jack Stack. This place is very upscale in its offerings, compared to the classics. Bigger menu and a full bar. The BBQ is high quality, with the sausage burnt ends as standouts. "If the meat is confident, the sauce is optional." -Anon Jack Stack's Freight House location in downtown was packed thanks to a big sporting event and so the hostess helpfully steered me to an outdoor table instead of waiting inside. It wasn't too hot yet, ordering from the QR code was simple, and the covered outdoor bar made grabbing a beer while I waited easy. My 115pm lunch arrived quickly (less than 20 minutes), still hot, well packed in to go containers if I so chose, and stocked with plenty of napkins, plasticware and an extra sauce pot. I opted to stay where I was and eat at the outside covered table. The brisket portion was generous and medium moist, and that was the highlight of the meal. Unfortunately, it was also overdone in my opinion and didn't need the sweet sauce already poured over it before it was served. The two beef ribs looked great but were chewy and stringy, which was disappointing in a city that usually excels at beef ribs. The cheesy corn bake missed the mark entirely, landing as a thin, runny "corn soup" rather than a proper side, and I gave up after a few spoonfuls. As I quoted at the start, confident meat doesn't need sauce. And next time, I'd stick with sides like potato salad or cornbread. I've had better barbecue in both KCK and KCMO, and while the service and setup were solid, the food itself lands this visit at three stars. Should have know by the.good bourbon selection that I was in for a treat. Sat in the bar area and got a very friendly waitress. Got the jumbo sandwich (without the bun) with brisket and turkey. The brisket had a nice flavor and was tender. The turkey was surprisingly moist as well. Have them put the sauce on the side. After all if any the BBQ is any good shouldn't need to hide it in a sauce. As I side I got the broccoli with garlic butter. This was probably the best broccoli I've had at a restaurant is a very long time. I've been very critical of KC BBQ, but this was a good representation of what BBQ should be like. Three of us looked for a highly rated bbq joint near the WWI museum and this popped up, so we visited. A huge free parking lot (if you get validation) is located right behind the restaurant. The smoke smell is evident before you enter the front door, a great sign! The restaurant itself is massive, so getting a table shouldn't be an issue. They have a huge bar with lots of seating too. Our waitress was awesome and helped us pick out a variety of meats and sides to try. We went with the Jack's Best (plus a cup of Beef Burnt End Stew) to share. Our recommended sides were slaw, potato salad, beans, and the cheesy corn bake. The beef rib was a meal in itself. The burnt ends and ribs were solid, but could have used a little more dry seasoning on them. The sausage was dense and very meaty tasting. I ordered the Kansas City Combo with beef burnt ends and brisket, along with the Roundup for 2 with pork ribs and more brisket. The ribs and brisket were both excellent and definitely the highlights of the meal. The burnt ends were just okay, even though many of the reviews seemed to rave about them. Jack Stack is a really cool restaurant in downtown Kansas City with fantastic ambiance. This was my second time visiting, and I'm glad I gave it another shot. The first time I came (about two years ago), I left a little disappointed because I had really high expectations and the brisket was slightly dry. Luckily, that seems like it was just an outlier. This time around, I came with a group of about 20 people and the service was excellent. Angela our server did a great job keeping up with a table that big--constantly refilling waters and checking in regularly, which is not easy with a group our size. The Stack sandwich is fantastic. The flavors all work really well together and make for a really satisfying BBQ sandwich. The fries were also very crispy and pair perfectly with their barbecue sauce. The real secret of the meal, though, is the sweet tea. They have multiple flavors (including white peach), and they are so good. Honestly, it might be the best sweet tea you've ever had. Luckily we had made reservation weeks ahead, so we got a table right away without waiting. The interior was super nice, almost like a wooden farmhouse. There were multiple bars, both were full with guests. There was also private room where a group was hosting an event. The menu had a lot of exciting bbq items alongside appetizers, soups and salads. First we order the bbq smoked chicken that came with fries. The chicken was excellent with such delicious flavor on the brown bbq skin. We also ordered the KC Combo with three picks that were beef brisket, beef burnt ends (suggested by our waiter) and lamb ribs. I started with lamb ribs and the taste was so good, I won't forget it for a long time. The tender meat was just falling off the bone. Incredibly rich seasoning and flavor. Then I tried the beef ones and I was equally impressed. Both brisket and burnt ends were top quality. All of them had good portion for two adults. The sides of broccoli and coleslaw were very good as well. We got a sundae for dessert and it was delicious as well. Our server such a pro. He was flawlessly managing multiple tables. Jack Stack was my first stop of the Big 4 KC BBQ institutions. Of the four it is the fanciest, with the feel of a fancy steakhouse. Super high ceilings, a fancy fireplace it seems like a converted lodge waitstaff that were dressed better than I was. Despite the fancy environs, there really wasn't any pretension. Our server was friendly with me as a noob to KC barbecue in general and my first time here in general and because of him we went with the 'Cue for Two,' getting the beef, pork and sausage option that came with cheesy corn, slaw and baked beans as an accompaniment. The beef was burnt ends, and the pork was the belly cut, meats that I'm a fan off and Jack's didn't disappoint. There wasn't enough burnt ends, in my opinion but the bark was a little on the thin side. However, the pork belly was tender and tasty while the sausage was seasoned just right. The sides too weren't too shabby either, I usually think slaw is just a throwaway side, literally something to toss out but it was a little sweet and light, not just a soulless glop. I just dined here today for an early lunch. While I can appreciate what I think they're going for, which is a more upscale BBQ joint, I honestly think the execution falls short when it comes to the food as it was very underwhelming. The service was very attentive as well, which makes it all the more disappointing. Due to the limitations of Yelp, I can't give Jack Stack 2.5 stars, which is what it actually deserves, so I had to resort to giving it 3 stars since it wouldn't be fair to give them 2. I ordered the pulled pork Mac and cheese appetizer and Kansas City Combo (pick 3) with lamb ribs ($5 substitution), burnt ends, and brisket and then I added on pulled pork, bone-in chicken, and smoked sausage. The portion sizes relative to price were decent overall. Other than the lamb ribs and the bone-in chicken which were the standouts overall and more juicy, the rest of the meat was incredibly dry with the burnt ends in particular being almost inedible. The burnt ends were only the charred bits without the soft pillowy meaty bits that make them a treat to eat in the first place. The sausage didn't have any standout flavor that was worth writing home about. The pulled pork, being dry, was also not really that flavorful. I also didn't really detect a strong smoke flavor at all, especially with the brisket which was also dry. I also felt that the although the Mac and cheese itself was rather unimpressive, it made eating the pulled pork easier. The only BBQ sauce they served me was more standard issue for me. I'm back Jack Stack Barbecue is a place I don't think I could ever skip if I'm in Kansas City. I really like the way they do their brisketsmoky, tender, and full of flavor. We also had appetizers, including onion rings and mushrooms, and they were all very good. This is one of those spots where you can tell they know what they're doing with barbecue. I wish I was exaggerating when I say that the burnt ends were as chewy as rubber. Each one of the 8 or so pieces of burnt ends were all so chewy. some even had visible non-rendered connective tissue. The Ribs were better. Still a little chewy, not super tender. Not fall off the bone as they should be. The brisket was better. The brisket was actually tender. I thought it was a little bland without BBQ, but other than that, I quite enjoyed the brisket. For my side I got the beans. Those were also pretty good. Personally, I wouldn't return. This place used to be awesome, but now it's an expensive disappointment. We waited about 30 minutes to get in, not terrible for a Friday night. Ordered burnt ends for two, they were out of pork. So we got beef burnt ends and sausage. The sides were potatoes, beans and corn bake . The corn was not terrible, but pretty runny. The beans tasted like they reheated them in a plastic container and melted the plastic. The cheesy potatoes were potatoes au gratin and tasted fairly decent. The burnt ends were a huge disappointment; all un-rendered fat. This is supposed to be one of the best BBQ restaurants around and they don't know how to render the fat out? They literally served us burnt fat on a plate and charged us $50 for that. Disgusting. The last several times we went to this location we began to notice the decline in quality, but this time it was glaringly apparent. Looks like they are trying to survive off of their reputation only while cutting corners on the food. It's a shame, because at one time this place was top notch, now it's just fat chunks on a plate with some runny cheese and reheated baked beans. The server was polite, but never checked on us and only refilled our water once, not our tea. Our meal was served by someone else as was our appetizer, and the appetizer was a very dry cornbread with honey butter. Years ago this place was in my top 5 restaurants, but now I'm putting it on my list of places to avoid. The ambiance is still nice and it smells like good food, but what you get is straight trash on a plate at a steep price. Just skip this one and try one of the other Freight House restaurants. Great dinner! We went to Jack stack before a concert at the memorial museum. This was very close. Our server was on top of it all night! He did a great job and kept track of a few changes that we had. My sandwich was delicious and HUGE. Had I eaten earlier in the day, I would say my husband and I could have split one but, was a bit hungrier today. We also tried their onion rings which were also very large. We were in town for a dance competition and our group of 18(!) stopped in to grab lunch during a break. The service here was phenomenal! Not only was the server friendly and provide great menu recommendations, but he split orders accurately, payment was quick (love the QR payment), and our large group - who included a few stragglers - all got our food on time and on schedule to get back to the competition for awards. Outside of service, the food was yummy and everyone was happy. We knew to expect KC style barbecue so no expectation surprises there and the sides were great too! Highly recommend this place for larger groups (if I come back into town for an event, I'll consider reserving their private room as we were sat in there and it was great). I came here for bbq with my friend when we were visiting Kansas City. We got chicken, ribs, and beans. The meat was tender and when to put the sauce on it, it was really good, but if it didn't have any sauce, it definitely lacked some flavor. We lovedț the baked beans they were super good and so were the drinks.. the restaurant has indoor and outdoor seating our server gave great recommendation and service was rather quick. read more
