Our new favorite BBQ! I noticed Off The Hook as we were driving home one day from an errand on North Oak Trafficway. The exterior looked inviting and the parking lot seemed adequately busy, so I noted to my husband that we would have to check it out soon. Several days later we brought our infant and a friend and were warmly greeted by staff who explained the ordering process and instantly made us feel welcomed. We didn't have to wait for seating but it's was nice to see a local business like this pretty busy with patrons. We had a hard time figuring out what we wanted (it honestly all looked good) but decided on brisket nachos, a pulled pork loaded potato and burnt ends with fries and baked beans. When I say everything we ate was phenomenal I mean it rivaled a lot of the major local spots that people flock to in KC for BBQ. I also loved the sauces and did feel the regular/spicy had enough of a variation to appeal to differing tastebuds (I'm a spicy fan and while it wasn't the hottest I've had it had some bite.) Despite some other reviews on here we felt the price was a great value - especially on the nachos and potato - for the amount of BBQ/food. The Mac and cheese we ordered for our daughter was also some of the best we've had out of the house and as a Texan I loved the flavor of the queso on the nachos. We have since returned many times and the service and food have been consistently good. We have brought friends and family each time who similarly rave about the food and good people serving it - and many have returned on their own without us. We also recently took the chance to try their (weekday morning) breakfast burritos after salivating over them on the menu...WOW is all I can say. Worth every penny - huge and had tons of flavor. My dad is quite the foodie and could not stop raving about them. I hope this business continues to have lots of success/growth and that they continue serving up good food here in the northland (and beyond, if they please.) Such a wonderful local spot! read more

A solid barbecue spot north of the river. It was busy on a Saturday afternoon just after the lunch rush, so I sat at the bar. Normally you would order at the register and take your seat, but since I was in a good spot a gentleman working up front took care of me. I ordered the spare rib meal, which was served with three ribs + your choice of meat + one side. The ribs were fantastic. Super smokey and were easily torn off the bone. I was hoping for a little more flavor from the sausage, but it was still solid. I added some sauce to help out. I loved the cheesy potatoes, which I thought was a nice change of pace. There's a lot of variety and a little something for everybody. Portions are sized so you won't go hungry. Please don't feel bashful if you need a to-go container. read more

The meats were some of the most tender and juicy bbq I've ever had! This sampler platter was the way to go! They have hot and mild sauce. The men working were very hospitable and greeted folks as they came in. You get your table, view the menu and order and pay at the counter. They then give your table number and bring out your food once ready. It has at least 12 tables inside and a few outside the establishment is below apartments. I went here earlier today for a Labor Day brunch, and this place is kind of average to just below average. I want to start off by noting that the wait staff are super friendly and attentive, and the shortcomings with this place have nothing to do with them as they were exceptional. I ordered a sampler platter, which comes with ribs, sausage, brisket, turkey, two chicken wings, with my sides being the baked beans and Mac and cheese. I also added on some burnt ends and pulled pork. In general, I did not get a lot of smoke on all the meat I ordered, which was a shame. The ribs were way overcooked. The sausage I think was supposed to be a Cajun andouille sausage, but it didn't really taste Cajun to me and was more standard issue. The brisket was sliced way too thin and was a bit on the drier side, but there was enough to sample. The turkey was kind of average. The pulled pork was slightly moist, but did not have a lot of flavor. As far as their standouts, I will say the chicken wings and burnt ends were the better things on the plate for me. The chicken wings were well seasoned and the burnt ends had that sought after soft, pillowy texture that makes them a joy to eat. The only fault I can really find with them is the aforementioned lack of smoke. As far as sides are concerned, the baked beans were overly sweet for me. The Mac and cheese was decent and sufficiently cheesy. The bbq sauce here might have been some of the worst I tried since I've been out here unfortunately. Table side they had a sweet and "regular" bbq sauce to try and both of them tasted like they had rubbing alcohol in it or something that was not sufficiently cooked out of it. I took some to go with my leftovers just to see if what I had on the table was no good or if it would taste the same and I just ended up throwing it away because it tasted the same. If you're in the area, it might be worth grabbing some of their wings and burnt ends, but it's not really worth its own journey. Due to yelp's limitations, I can't give it a 2.5 star, which is what I think it deserves, so I gave it 3 star since I didn't think it would've been fair to give it just 2. read more

Must try in the northland! Martell & Franklin are super welcoming from the minute you walk in. And throughout our time dining in, they made sure to check up on us. Of course I can't leave the review without sharing how great the food was. The brisket was incredibly juicy and tender. No sauce needed, but their sauce is also a nice complement to the meat. When I first visited right after their grand opening, I was left feeling apathetic. The food just didn't hit where it needed to. I wasn't in a rush to go back, but I did want to make sure to give them another try after some time had passed, in case the initial impression had been made prior to them ironing out any unforeseen issues as a new business. Recently, I tried their mac and cheese, burnt ends, potato salad, and beans. It's good. ...Just not amazing. The food seems fresh, the place always seems clean. The younger man that owns/runs the place is very nice. The parking can sometimes be an issue because they're located in a small trip mall connected to an apartment complex. Their prices are also just a little expensive in my humble opinion. The BBQ sauce isn't really anything to write home about. I would say that Off The Hook provides a very solid choice for BBQ in the northland. I like it better than F325 BBQ, Scott's Kitchen, and Wolfpack BBQ. It's similar in level to Char Bar, and maybe Oklahoma Joe's, but falls short to Q39. And I think it still has a way to go to beat Jack Stack BBQ. read more

I may have found a new favorite BBQ restaurant in KC!!! I seen the reviews were good and when we pulled up, there were already a few people inside & many more were coming in while we were . Order at the register and food is ready in about 10-15 minutes. I ordered a quarter pound of pulled pork and burnt ends entrée that came with baked beans. That was enough for two people to share. The pulled pork has a lot of flavor and it's juicy super yummy. The burnt ends were the same and not very fatty. Beans were a little sweet. I love this place! The service is fast and friendly. There are menus on the table and you order at the counter when you're ready. Kevin was super welcoming and knowledgeable about the menu. My husband has to eat gluten free and Kevin was able to share which items my husband could eat. All the meats, rubs, and sauces were gluten free. My husband enjoyed the ribs, bbq beans, and a loaded baked potato. He said it was delicious and he would get it again. I had the spicy brisket grilled cheese with a side of Mac n' cheese. It was delicious! The sandwich was a masterpiece of flavors. The Texas toast was perfectly grilled and loaded with tender brisket. It's got the perfect amount of pepper jack cheese, jalapeños, and onion straws. The flavors were balanced and it was the right amount of spicy to not overpower the flavor of the meat. The Mac n' cheese tasted like it was made with love like somebody's grandmother made it for the church dinner, rather than a bland afterthought for the kids menu. This is the new kid in town and honestly, it's not bad. When you walk in, do not be surprised at not smelling that smokey BBQ joint aroma. Being on the first floor of an apartment building, their smoker is outside the restaurant. I went on a Saturday afternoon and the place was busy. The staff is super nice and very welcoming. To get a little of everything, I opted for the sampler platter (a well priced $44.99) It offered ribs, sausage, brisket, turkey, wings, and two sides (I opted for mac & cheese and cole slaw). The brisket was tender and had good flavor. The ribs were fall of the bone, but just the perfect firmness. My only complaint is I am a bold smokey BBQ guy and this wasn't as bold as I like, but that in no way takes away from the quality or flavor of the food. The wings were also good, moist and had great flavor. This place shines as being the ONLY place I actually like the turkey. It was moist and had great flavor (try their smoked turkey melt, it is definitely a show stopper). The sides also did not disappoint. The mac & cheese was definitely cheesy, creamy, and flavorful. Not sure it was baked, but it didn't matter as all the flavor was there. The cole slaw was also very good. Not sure if they make it in house, but for not being a cole slaw fan, I would order it again... Correction, WILL order it again. They do offer phone in and online orders as well as you can reserve a table online (I highly reccomend this as the place stays pretty busy). So we stopped in here as we always are looking for bbq and wow did we hit it good , I've reviewed a lot of ribs in the USA and these were the most fall off spare ribs I've had , I even got a chance to talk with the owner and compliment him see pics , he brought out a jumbo wing which hardly anyone does any more , three step process I tell you what wow that was the best wing I've had no kidding !! ok i'll start with the good. The space is new so it's nice & clean. The staff is very friendly. The sauces are good but on the sweet side, but the so-called "spicy" is not even remotely spicy The french fries are good but that's not why anyone is going to a BBQ place. The BBQ itself is awful. i mean truly it's bad. The staff is so nice that I want the food to be good but it's objectively terrible. I went twice thinking the first time was an "off" day. Nope. It was worse the second time. Sliced brisket sandwich on trip one & burnt ends on trip two. Both were among the worst I've ever had but the burnt ends were an actual abomination. The burnt ends had zero bark & i have a hard time believing they were ever in an actual smoker. I don't mind fatty BBQ if it's good, but these were fatty in a terrible way & actually tasted like propane. As if they were cooked in an oven. To even call them burnt ends is sacrilegious. As i mentioned the brisket wasn't much better. Zero hint of smoke, no bark, no flavor. It just tasted kind of like no very good roast beef. How this place is getting such good reviews is beyond me. I have no idea what kind of smoker or wood they are allegedly using, but when you park outside there is no hint of bbq smoke or smell. That's a bad sign. The front door is a little challenge to discern. There are two doors and the main one is not marked well. The restaurant is very clean. The staff is friendly. You can tell they care. The Bbq is "off the hook." I got the rib combo plate with two pork ribs, burnt ends and beans. The rib meat fell off the bone. The burnt ends were juicy, beefy goodness. It all could of had a little more smoke flavor. The two sauces were nice and flavorful. The beans are ok. I give the Bbq and the service 4 stars. The value is 3 stars. I paid around $30 for lunch and still left a little hungry. They should add one more rib bone and couple more pieces of burnt ends. I would go back. Stopped in yesterday on opening day about 15 minutes after they opened their doors on their new brick and mortar location on N. Oak in Gladstone. The building is brand new with high visibility and has all new furnishings, a nice mural and photos, 9 stools at the bar, and about 15 tables with counter ordering and pick-up. Everyone was happy and welcoming and seemed ecstatic to finally get the doors open for paying customers. I love walking into a business and feeling that they are as excited to see me as I am to try the menu. They were on a limited menu while going through the soft opening. I chose the 4 ribs with a side of beans and ordered an extra side of fries also. The fries - nothing special. The Baked Beans were splendid - sweet, spicy and smoky. My 4 ribs had excellent flavor and were the poster child for "fall off the bone". I would have prefered a bit less tenderness and a bit more bark and grit but the flavor was exceptional and a lot of people prefer the "fall off the bone" approach when eating ribs - so in no means was it subpar, just not my most favored style of preparing. The plate came with bread, pickles and pickled onions. Two sauces at the table were excellent and on the sweet side, but I honestly couldn't tell the difference and they weren't labeled. I would give the ribs 4.5 stars and round up to 5 for the peripherals. read more

Best BBQ I've ever had. And I just went on a bbq tour of Kansas City where I tried the Big Four. Way better than any of those. The most tender meat I've ever eaten. Pork spare ribs were fall off the bone, literally. Brisket was super juicy and tender, don't even need teeth to bite and enjoy. Jumbo chicken wing was moist and flavorful. Potato salad was amazing and packed with flavor. And the spicy bbq sauce was perfect. Staff and owners were super welcoming and friendly. A bunch of regulars were there when I was there. The second you open the door, it hit you in the face!!! Success, of their ability to smoke meat. I set up at the counter just to take in what was coming out of this little window. It gave me quite a buzz before even taking a bite to hear all the sounds of taking the orders, the room full of joy of the food no loud music to muffle, pure enjoyment of a room full of flavor. It held its own melody after the first bite I felt like putty in their hands. You know the kind where your eyes rolled to the back of your head!!! I had the BBQ a few times at their old place. Really good. Since their new place has opened, I've been there a few times. I have not had a traditional BBQ meal, but I have not been disappointed. Weird that this place already has reviews years ago when it just opened not too long ago. Today, is their first day with a full menu open. I would suggest going early ASAP to get what you want because they do go out fast if you're expecting to get something in the afternoon especially the evening time. I am glad to see they open second shop or moved here closer to where I live. I finally got to try their ribs and they are deliciously tender cooked well and come right off the bones. Their BBQ is good. They have regular and spicy. I love the spicy even though it was not spicy to me but just tasted better and got myself a bottle of it for home. Next day, tried their burnt ends and they are amazingly soft and melts in your mouth, bread is delicious. The place where is located a bit weird under apartment complex and parking is not that great especially for this business. I was not greeted as I came in a few times so not quite sure how most of these reviews saying they were greeted especially by the owner. However, service and staff are nice and friendly every time i visited. Father and son are friendly and make you feel right at home. Lady cash register and server lady are friendly and nice as well.
