After trying Broken Rice and their banh mi, I also stopped by San's to try theirs. Overall, I think there were some things than San's did better - the banh mi was bigger for roughly the same price, and the loaf was better made as well. However, I will say that even then, the bread at San's wasn't quite what I wanted - the exterior crust was soft, and not crisp and flaky like I want and expect from a traditional banh mi. I love a Banh Mi sandwiches and now I have another place to go, San's Sandwiches in Gladstone, MO. We got the #4, pork simmered in Chinese char siu sauce. My favorite part was the broth on the side. Their bun bo hue is so good if you like spicy beef noodles. Can't go wrong with their banh mi. They definitely change it up, doesn't look like they make their own bread anymore due to high demands but they still got a good size portions of their banh mi. I like this place. The Vietnamese food is delicious and all the dishes are good portions. Everything comes out hot and fresh. They don't skimp on the meat and veggies on any of the dishes. Another great Vietnamese Banh Mi place in a plaza full of Vietnamese places, not what you would expect to find a few miles north of downtown Kansas City. It is definitely the best Plaza in town for this kind of food. So these are amazing sandwiches and the plaza also has the best boba in the state, Go Cha, which is just across the plaza. Visited for lunch on a quiet Monday. As other reviewers have said, you're supposed to find a table yourself, and then they will bring a menu to you. There is a language barrier, but the menus have lots of photos so you're pretty sure to know what you're ordering. I had the fried egg roll dish, which was a bowl full of greens, a fried egg roll, and cooked pork. I also had a spring roll, with peanut sauce. There was so much flavor, and the pork was delicious; like bacon. My favorite dish here is their Bo Ne, which is their sizzling beef plate with egg, pate, homemade meatballs, and a banh mi roll. How to eat this is to tear a piece of the bread, dip it in the juices and pate, add a slice of steak or egg on top and eat it. It's delicious! Tonight, I paid a visit to San's Sandwich's, in Gladstone. It wasn't my first time eating Vietnamese food, but it was my first-time eating Pho. I started with Hoi Cuon (Spring Rolls) and Peanut Sauce. The rolls came four to an order. I have had peanut sauce in the past but never one like this. There was a thick peanut sauce in the bottom of the bowl with some peanut chunks on top of that with little bit of a red paste that had a nice hint of spice to it. I mixed all three together and put a nice smear of that mixture on each bite of roll. I was in peanut heaven. For the Pho I ordered Pho Dac Biet, a beef and rice noodle soup. In a huge bowl they brought me a tender chunks and slices of beef, enough rice noodles to feed three large men, and covered that with a rich beef broth that had a hint of mint to it. I still like to come here for sandwiches but here are some warnings! 1. You just walk in and sit down at any open/clean table. 2. You have to flag down the waiter 3. You may have to get a menu and point to the items you want and say the amount you want because the person at the counter may not speak English at all. 4. They have an autistic son who may make the experience awkward. He followed us out of the restaurant and tried to get us to go into the dollar store next door. Pointing to the store and saying the word "train" Over and over. We just told him "No" and "sorry" and kept walking. 5. Beware of the bathroom. It's next to a room where the owners children hang out. Also it's kind of dark and they only have hand sanitizer in bathroom the day I went. With all of this said, I still come here and will continue to come here because I like the food. My original review stands, but with some edits (below) and more thoughts having now attended this place a few times. Primary I would add to my earlier comment that their Bahn Mi's are okay, but they are small, not generous with the veg and there are better choices about six blocks south on Oak. Part of the Vietnamese development in Gladstone known Little Saigon Plaza, they offer mainly Bahn Me, but there are other - better - parts of the menu. This is a nice open space with an open kitchen and when we walked in, we were quickly greeted and shown a seat. We have never had an issue with communicating with the staff at this restaurant with just the slightest effort it was very easy to cut through most any accent and communicate. We have had an issue with service in that they bring the food out as they make it. Diner goes like this, if htey actually remember to bring the whole order, you get something, five minutes later I get something, five minutes later that guy gets something and by the time the fourth person gets their food, the first person is done eating. I would recommend ordering to go to avoid this issue. As I noted above, all the Bahn Mi we've had have been delicious in flavor with bread that is expected and normal assortment of veg (just skimpy). Overall the sandwich was okay. Bun Bo Hue or spicy beef soup (#12). The soup was very, very good. Strong beef flavor with generous amounts of beef and bean sprouts. The earthly flavor of the fresh vegetables cut through the richness of the broth. The noodles were also generous and homey with a delightful thickness and good bite resistance. Lac Nuoi or skillet beef (#10) and OMG, this is pay-dirt! The skillet is pate, beef, fried egg, meatballs (Xiu Mai) along with lettuce, cucumber and cabbage with half of one of their sandwich rolls. The pate, was creamy and perfectly seasoned. The beef and meatballs too had an excellent flavor, with a very subtle crunch. The skillet is almost a deconstructed sandwich, but a delicious dish! Was recommended here by my husband's friend to try out their banh mi sandwiches. The flavor and all the dishes we ordered were really really good! I'm from the San Fernando Valley in California so I am around authentic restaurants and I've searched far and wide in Kansas City for some really good Vietnamese food and this was it! Their peanut sauce with a kick of spice together with their spring rolls was my absolute favorite and I LOVE spring rolls. I'm also very picky about my spring rolls and this is now my favorite place to order some spring rolls. Their pho broth was really good and so was the combination ban mi sandwich my husband got. Everything tastes so fresh and again, the correct flavors were there. I could not recommend this spot enough. This place has the best Vietnamese breakfast aka steak & eggs on a skillet with a warm baguette on the side. Always hits the spot on a Sunday morning with their addicting cafe sua da aka Vietnamese iced coffee. The balance in the coffee is just right, not too sweet but sweet enough, and it's strong. Their spring rolls are amazing too, the sauce that comes with it is sooo good! Service is quick, usually it's only one person running the tables but trust me, it's efficient. I came here with very low expectations due to reviews from other Yelpers. However, I was pleasantly surprised. We were dining in, so we sat down at a table after grabbing a menu from the counter to look at. The restaurant wasn't very busy, and aside from my boyfriend and I, there were only 2 other tables dining in. We did wait a bit before someone came out to take our order, but when she noticed us, she apologized for not noticing earlier. We ordered the combination sandwich, cold cut sandwich, and Chinese pork sandwich. All the sandwiches other than the combination sandwich were $4.5, but if you order 2 sandwiches, you get a $1 discount, so our total was $13, with a dollar added for tax. All the sandwiches were delicious. I noticed some yelpers complain about pickled cabbage in their sandwiches, their bread not being toasted, and no Vietnamese mayo in their sandwiches, but I did not have those issues. The bread was nicely toasted for me, evident by the warmth of the sandwich and some burnt edges in the bread, and I made sure to check that I had Vietnamese mayo inside before eating it. There was also no sign of pickled cabbage in the sandwich, so either they're listening to the feedback given on these reviews, or the quality can vary on a day to day basis. One thing that I did notice off about the combination sandwich however was the grilled pork. I saw no traces of it in combination sandwich amongst the cilantro, carrots and radish, jalapeno, Vietnamese ham, and steamed pork, despite the menu stating that it was a part of the sandwich. That was a disappointment, but didn't ruin the overall experience for me. There were also yelper comments about kids noisely running around the restaurant during their visit, and although I did notice kids in the restaurant, they were quietly hanging out in a back room by the bathroom. My guess is that they're the owner's kids and were brought to work since there was no one at home to watch them. All in all, the food here is good, and the service is fine, as long as you're patient. It looks like the restaurant is family owned and operated, so they're a little short staffed, but everyone here is nice, and just working hard to make a living. read more

As the Pagoda Plaza on North Oak keeps expanding, I like to pop by to see what's new. This time I grabbed a bahn mi combination and some bun bo hue from San's Sandwiches. I came in about 1:30 and placed my take out order. There was only one table with a couple and another customer getting take out. One of the reasons for the low stars is the language barrier. I'm sure I wasn't pronouncing things correctly but there was a huge barrier in just placing my order. The English skills of the two ladies was really nonexistent. After pointing and some repeating we got there but it was a bit of a hassle. It took about 20+ minutes to get my order which seemed like a long time for not being busy. While one lady made my sandwich I believe she microwaved my baguette to warm it up but it just made it dry, stale and unpleasant to eat. The fillings were plentiful and tasty but overall not good because of the bread. The bun bo hue was packed well and I like the texture of the noodles they used. The broth built up the heat as you ate it but I didn't think it was that flavorful other than the spice and the fresh herbs I added. There was also a kind of funkiness from fish sauce or something that I didn't really like. I'm no expert at bun bo hue, I've probably only had it once before so I don't know if that's what it's supposed to taste like but I don't think I'd get it again. With incredibly better noodle soup a few doors down I think you can skip this place unless you're really craving a bahn mi. You can get 2 for $8 if you really want. read more

Surprisingly enough I really do enjoy this place. I've had 4/6 sandwiches, their pho and their bun bo hue. I'm really impressed! However, I didn't like their banh mi xiu mai , it had too much tomato paste. Also the fact that they microwaves their thit nuong to reheat it, but that was still good. What really got me impressed was the bun bo hue, spicy beef noodle, not only was I impressed but my parents were too! This says a lot seeing that my dad used to be a chef and owned his own Vietnamese restaurant. One awkward thing about this place, you don't know if you order at the counter or seat yourself and order at the table. After noticing the poor reviews below, I have to say that after two visits, this is my favorite place nearby the office to pick up a sandwich to bring back to the office for lunch. It's not a "polished" dining experience yet. If you are blown away by different, then you might feel uncomfortable with the layout and ordering process. I guess. Is it fast? Nope. Is it super tasty and satisfying for lunch at $4.50? Uhhhh... yeah. Are you kidding me? Keep going to Good-Sub-Johns. The bread is really good. The veggies are fresh and different. My family was excited to come and try this new restaurant in the Northland because I've missed some authentic Vietnamese sandwiches with homemade mayo and pate. San's did not steer me wrong because even my toddler loves to eat the pate & mayo spread on the bread. Granted the pickled cabbage at first bite did stump me, I figured hey cabbage is another healthy vegetable what better way to diversify my plate & be colorful. San's might be the only one presenting in this fashion, but the trend has grown on me and the uniqueness that is San's is still a yummy choice for lunch or early dinner. My favorite dish by far when I'm able to dine in is #10 Skillet Beef with pate, meatball, fried egg, pickled veggies & side of bread. We love to combine pieces and use your creativity to do as you please. Dip, stuff, or just fork it. It comes in a sizzling skillet and the methodology reminds me of the skillets that come out when you order fajitas at a Mexican restaurant, because the skillet has the "stuff" and it's your choice to create your fajita with the tortillas provided on the side. Granted San's sandwiches is a Vietnamese sandwich shop and does not have fajitas. If I were to make a simile with my experience I would say the bread on the side is to the tortillas in a Mexican restaurant, both options allowing the consumer to choose how the entree is assembled and gobbled up into their belly. But if you are not the type that still wants to work (put together) their meal then a sandwich is the better route to go. When I'm in a hurry or my kids are asleep in the car and I have to alternate with the hubby, I tend to eat either of the below sandwiches #1 grilled pork #9 combination #8 steamed pork The business is definitely evolving and I also witnessed as we dined the children that was mentioned by some other people. The one thing I noticed reviewers have not mentioned was the obviousness that the children were Autistic. In that respect, the many times I've eaten with my family at this restaurant, I've overlooked the children and saw this as a positive thing where I wouldn't have to be embarrassed if my toddlers suddenly had a tantrum, because its hard to find a kid and family friendly atmosphere. Decided to give this place a try after recently discovering the Pagoda shopping plaza on North Oak Traffic way. The Combination Banh Mi(#8)was good. Toasted perfectly with a good helping of meat. I didn't taste any homemade Mayo which is usually included on a Vietnamese sandwich and a key ingredient. It was warm and toasted just right. $5 is a little pricey for that sandwich. Also order Bun Bo Hue which was the Sunday special. Nice flavor and all the meats were tender. Priced right at $8. They also had Pho as a special on the day I went. My friends & I decided to try San Sandwiches out of the other 2 restaurants that served pho & Bun Bo Hue. This place was highly recommended for the great taste of their broth & boy were they right. My BBH was very tasteful & my friend said his beef pho was good too! My BBH came with pork blood but it didn't have a seasoned taste to it & just tasted like blood. One of the reasons I get the BBH is for the pork blood. When I cook pork blood I season it so it will have at least a different taste than just blood taste. This was the first restaurant that it was bland & the broth of the BBH didn't help it taste any better. We also ordered the fresh spring rolls which had noodles, lettuce, shrimp & some type of meat in it. Maybe marinated pork which didn't hit my palette as much as I wanted it to. The peanut sauce however made it so much better. We ordered the Vietnamese ice coffee which they prepared it for you & put it in a Togo cup with ice instead of the usual glass cup with the small metal drip filter with the ground coffee in it. I didn't see them make it but it took awhile to get so I'll assume it was done fresh. The cà phê đá just didn't seem as strong for some reason. All in all it was still good though. The restaurant wasn't that big & decor was different. The server which I guess is the owner was very helpful & friendly. He checked up on us & asked how the food was which was nice. From time to time, a restaurant may run out of a certain ingredient and a menu item becomes unavailable. This is understandable for mom-and-pop businesses or almost anywhere when it gets towards the end of the day. What is not understandable is when a business runs out of it main ingredient and then completely fails to communicate it. I came here a few weeks ago with my family for dinner. This was a Sunday evening a little after 7 P.M. so there was a little less than an hour until closing. It was moderately busy but definitely not to the point where no one could spare a moment to greet us. We awkwardly stood for a brief moment and then decided to seat ourselves at a clean table. We sat for a long few minutes confused as to whether someone would come acknowledge us or if we should go to the counter to order. Finally, we overheard a staff member telling someone at one of the other tables that there is no more bread. We sat awkwardly for another minute wondering if someone is going to come talk to us. No one did so we got up and asked the woman at the counter who confirmed that there is indeed no more bread and therefore no more sandwiches. Fed up with the pathetic service and communication, we left and went next door to another restaurant. Overall, it was an entirely horrible experience and an utter waste of our time. Regardless of whether or not there is table service, any one of the staff members floating around or at the counter could have told us what was going on when we entered the door and during the many minutes that we were sitting there. It definitely would have been nice to have been told directly that the restaurant's main ingredient is out instead of happening to overhear from someone's casual conversation. The fact that a sandwich place runs out of bread and does not bother to tell their customers is a complete joke. I do not care if they have bread next time.
