Some fashion hair barrettes which I do think were a bit overpriced but other items were very reasonable. I regret passing on some cute slipper shoes. I'll take pics on my next visit. The store is packed with cute, kitschy, Korean gifts. I was there with a group of people and could have spent more time looking around if my group were not in a hurry. When I arrived in the morning, I almost thought they were closed because the store looked pretty dark from outside, but the open sign was there and I was greeted politely when I went in. The shop has a lot of cute, curated items, with maybe a stronger focus on stationery and paper goods than the small figures or novelty items I was personally hoping for. There is also a little trinket exchange cabinet, which is a fun concept and worth checking out even if you are just browsing. Overall, the selection felt thoughtfully chosen, just more in line with stationery and gifts than I was looking for that day. One thing that stood out to me was the lighting. Even on a sunny day with large windows, the interior felt quite dim, especially when browsing smaller items. A bit more overhead lighting would make it easier to really see what they offer. That said, the atmosphere was calm and the staff was friendly without being overbearing, which I appreciated. Their jewelry section, which is mostly earrings and accent rings, is sourced from artisans both locally and regionally. Detail: the up-cycled clothes, such as Chiefs-themed distressed jeans, are ridiculously cool. This gem of a store has been so clutch over the years for picking up gifts. Some of the people in my life are, um, a little hard to shop for, but when I come in here, I always come away with something great. It's all so well-curated; some gifts are classy, some funny, and many are versatile. It beats the socks off of going into a big box store in a million ways. Being in a charming stretch of a walkable area adds to its appeal, and the staff is always friendly. They also have Pickwick candles which are some of the best in town. These soy candles will last multiple seasons and almost all of them smell amazing. Cheers to this shop, they're doing it right and have saved my bacon every December since they've opened.

Even the kitchen sink, located on the second floor, is stuffed with options. The second floor has nooks and crannies in which to get lost, but don't forget the third floor! Distinctive holiday finds, everyday gifts...it's almost like a Spencer's Gifts collided with a World Market and spread joy all over. My most recent trip left me in possession of locally made jelly (peach cinnamon!), two new ornaments for the holiday display, maybe the best yard sign ever, stocking stuffers, and decals for my daughter's burgeoning collection. Hammerpress has a super unique collection of paper goods, candles, soaps, and cards, which makes it a great location for a niche gift. They have beautiful cards for all occasions. There are tons of fancy pens and hand-painted, recycled-paper journals. I droll over all of their carefully curated candles and unique perfumes. This is not a cheap place to shop for a gift, but it's worth it! The recipient of the gift will feel so special and artsy. There is usually plenty of parking on the streets of the West Bottoms, unless it's a First Friday weekend - then expect to have to stroll a far distance, but Hammerpress is located conveniently close to some of my favorite antique shops.

As a college student I'd look forward to an excuse to trek to KCMO from Lawrence to shop here and pick up some local goodies. They've been doing this so long, you could probably even make an argument that they were kind of the original shop local spot here in the city. Flash forward and Hammerpress has migrated from their OG location to further down SW BLVD, and now to this new spot in the heart of the West Bottoms. It had been a while since I visited so I wasn't sure where they had moved to, but it seems fitting that they'd end up in the West Bottoms as many of the artists that once had studios in the Crossroads have migrated that direction as well, and it seems true to both their craft as printers, and their vibe as artists to be in yet another cool, up and coming, hip neighborhood. All of this being said, this new spot is by far their coolest. From the arched entryway, to the bright interior, you're going to find everything you've come to expect from Hammerpress. Beautiful art prints? Check! Locally made greeting cards? Check! other stationary and art goodies? check and check! Next time you need a card go check them out - you won't regret it!
