Things have definitely changed here. Unfortunately not for the good. Something just fell off when we first arrived. It was a Saturday night and the place was practically empty. I guess the one good thing was our table wasn't full so we were not as cramped as you normally are at a Teppanyaki restaurant as all seats around The grill or occupied. The prices are a lot higher than other Teppanyaki restaurants and the portion sizes seem to have shrunk. Additionally, a slap a 19% gratuity on your bill with no mention of it anywhere. We came here for my guy's birthday. We had teppenyaki. I've never been here but he has. There is ample parking. When we walked in on a Wednesday evening. The bar area was closed but the host sat us within a few minutes with another party of people there celebrating a birthday as well. Aa appetizers we goy a couple sushi rolls. They were good but this place does not specialize in sushi. They specialize in teppanyaki ! And for entrees, I got the steak with fried chicken rice (upgrade from the white rice that it typically comes with - small upcharge for that - but I highly recommend). My guy got the scallops with fried chicken rice. And we shared. All the food was delicious. Our entrees did come with miso soup and small salad. Overall, the experience was awesome. Our server worked extremely hard to ensure we were always satisfied and not waiting too long for anything. Our chef was adorable in an older person kind of way. We made reservations for 10 guests, about a week early. The day comes and we arrive in time, yet it takes almost 15 minutes to get seated because "the cooks were running behind." The only reason we knew that is because we asked why were we waiting, it was not a self promoted piece of information offered from the host. Regardless, we're patient and understood. Well our turn finally comes, we get seated, order drinks, then get told we have to wait again, now because the "grill has to heat up." Understandable. I should add, this is not our first time visiting. We've visited a few times before and had pretty pleasant and efficient experiences. Nevertheless, the cook finally gets to our station after about 35-40 minutes of us checking in for your reservation. The place was pretty empty when we arrived, so it was a bit quiet of a vibe initially. From our previous experiences here and at other hibachi/teppan restaurants the cook does a great job of performing some tricks, having some fun, and incorporating us. Not this time around. It was a very rushed and very mundane. Once the cook finally finished cooking, the portions seemed smaller than we recall and the food was fine. Our bill ended up being $520, which is reasonable considering the 19% gratuity was included. It was not reasonable based on the experience as a whole. I look forward to Kobe Teppan & Sushi making the necessary changes to improve the experience for other guests. read more

My wife and I enjoyed lunch at Kobe, a Japanese Teppanyaki and sushi restaurant located in Tempe. The restaurant is beautiful inside, we especially liked the beautiful artwork and etched glass throughout the restaurant. We chose the Teppanyaki side and made our selections awaiting our skilled chef to preform. We always enjoy the precision knife work, and the skillful artistry of chefs who prepare your meal right before your eyes. We really enjoyed the experience the Teppan-Yaki- lunch New York steak and shrimp combination with Hibachi vegetables $23.99 was delicious I added chicken fried rice for $4.00 upcharge. I told myself I'd never go back years ago, only came again for a birthday we got invited to. Update one year later. It looks like Kobe is struggling because I showed up at 1:30 on a Tuesday and there was one other customer. Rough start: when I pulled my chair out, it was dirty from a previous customer. I sat at the sushi bar as usual and ordered a crab salad (Sunomomo) and a Sunshine roll with a glass of ice water. There was easy rock on the radio and Con Air on the television. Odd mix. My salad came in about 10 mins. So did the sushi chef. Watching him, I got the distinct feeling he was a chef from the kitchen who had made sushi a couple of times and was filling in. The salad was disappointing. The cucumbers were cut thick, the crab wasn't shredded and there was very little vinegar on it. The Sunshine Roll was okay. The lemon was cut very thick, the slices were utterly uneven and the rice didn't extend to the end of the roll. I didn't see my server until it was time to pay. The bill came to $23.74 plus tip. Actually, they automatically charged 19% tip Sadly, I couldn't recommend Kobe, one of my favorite restaurants, any more. read more

Our dinner reservation was for 5:30 When we arrived they were rushing us to sit and order, telling us they had another reservation.We went because it was my daughter birthday, the chef had barely finished making us our meal, when they brought her cake out, I couldn't finish eating because they brought out the cake In the middle of eating dinner and then the bill. We all order Kobe beef with different choices of seafood. I realized the Kobe beef is not the same quality anymore. I asked for mine is medium rare but the chef convinced me to do medium because the beef is marble and supposedly really good.. But when I tried it , It's dry and little chewy, I think he did it well done. My lobster is not really fresh either, it smells like it really old and tastes funky. But the chef is really nice. I tip him $15 for his performance. My total bill is $247 and gratuity is added on 19% which comes out $322. Normally if you go to a restaurant with 4 or more than 4 of a party, I understand it should include gratuity. I think this is little ripped off. I can't believe this is major disappointed to come back here after couple years. No wonder the restaurant is empty and slow for a Thursday night. Only reason why they get 2 stars is the wait staff was really nice and the bus guy kept our area clean. When you walk in you wonder what is that smell? Not a good start. We had the pleasure of visiting Kobe for the first time tonight in over a decade. We could not be more impressed. Several times my husband mentioned "it was the best night ever." I made reservations (for 9 of us) ahead of time and had zero wait and were impressed by the friendly service and exciting hibachi show. Highly recommend the filet and scallops and the langostino hand roll. We had NY strip steak, filet mignon, chicken, shrimp and scallops, and it was all super, soft, delicious and packed with flavor. Our chef sure out on an eventful dinner show. The kids LOVED IT. The onion train was just the best. I am so happy this place is operating like it used to be and that it survived the pandemic. Had lunch at Kobe today because I was craving sushi and fried tofu. Unfortunately, this was not a great experience. The sushi was fresh, but sparse. It came with tempura shrimp, which was pretty good, but there was nothing to dip it in like most tempura so was very bland. The tofu was the real problem. It was undercooked, under seasoned and was served with cold ginger salad dressing to dip it in....NOT GOOD.... I am used to a tangy and/or spicy teriyaki type of dipping sauce, but cold ginger salad dressing on undercooked and lukewarm tofu is just not appetizing.... And beware...they add a 19% tip automatically, regardless of the number of people in your party (I was a party of 1) and do not mention it when they bring you the bill, so if you are not paying attention, you could very easily double tip.... read more

They stated "we can't seat you our chefs are behind" even though I heard their conversation where they said "I don't have room and they already took the other orders". Wait was only 15 minutes, even during peak Friday dinner... but I think I know why: the food was saturated in teriyaki sauce which made it so salty it was inedible! The chef was fine. Not entertaining, but fine. But he squeezed maybe three times the amount of crap sauce on the food. No joke- the entire table (so our group and the other group) no one ate their food. Hubby & I had dinner here last night. This was our 4th or 5th time. I asked for a sangria, which I have had every time we've been here, she said they don't have it & can't make it. After telling her I get it every time, she told me it must have been 5 years ago then. We hadn't visited here 5 years ago. 3 of the times we came here were this year. Whatever, I go something else. I ordered the crispy crab puffs. I was very disappointed. They didn't have any cream cheese in them. They were filled with a crab mix. Hubby ordered sushi like he always does. This time each piece was super small. They were at least half the size, if not smaller, than they've ever been. Our waitress didn't come by very often. We were the only table during our visit. We had empty glasses and dirty plates sitting in front of us for awhile each course. With them now adding 19% tip I except better service. Allan was our cook & he was really good. Best cook we've had there. Our bill was &160.00 for 2 alcoholic drink, 2 appetizers & 2 meals. There are so many other places to go that are good with good service, and cheaper. After asking for suggestions for teppanyaki restaurants in the area, this was the top recommended place so I definitely had to give it a try! Unfortunately I felt incredibly let down by everything. 1. Customer Service: The service sucked. We arrived on a not-so-busy Friday afternoon. The server literally had one table to manage in total and she was absent the entire time. The chef kept having to flag her down (even during his show) because others at our table needed sauces, refills, napkins, etc. It was evident he was annoyed by her nonappearance. 2. Ambiance/Aesthetics: Definitely has a moldy smell and for some reason everything just seemed old. 3. Quality of Product/Service: Chef put on a good show but came off as condescending when engaging to the other people at the table. The food was okay. Nothing really stood out to us. Me and my daughter go here about once a week or every two weeks. Literally the best Teppanyaki place in the valley. I saw that it had 3.2 stars or whatever and I literally have no clue how. This place was the bomb. It has 3 sections ( sushi, dining area and teppanyaki) Started off with some appetizers. The tempura mushrooms were awesome as were the Gyoza. Moved on to the Miso soup which was unique and had tofu cubes really good. Moved on to the entree of teriyaki chicken with grilled onions and mushrooms. This was so good with the white rice. Finally, saved the best for last. Fried Cheesecake. The cake becomes a custard inside the frying and this was insane. This was one of the best places in the valley I have ever had. I want to start by saying that I love Japanese culture and have been a fan of the Kobe Steakhouse and Seafood in Orlando FL. I love the atmosphere of a comedic and talented chef that allows me to see from start to finish and get to know other guest while we al watch the entertainment. The price is up there but the cuisine and experience is usually the best. (This is for the Orlando FL location.) The Tempe Kobe is obviously not the same chain judging by the different name. I took my daughter to celebrate her Baptismal there 7 years ago and make it a habit to do the same every year. I made reservations for 4 for 6:30pm. We arrived early at 6:07pm and though the restaurant was empty they would not allow us to sit down at our table until 6:30pm. They could of allowed us to sit at our empty table and congregate with water. I told them it was a celebration of baptism. The chef Seth found this humorous and did not understand that it was a wholesome occasion. He made obscene jokes with comments like "let me love you long time" He told us to hold our mouths open so he can squirt sake in it from afar emulating ejaculation. I kept speaking to him in Japanese and he understood me, but spoke back in Spanish to be funny. He overcooked all of the food. He put the chicken on first and then the lobster, fish, shrimp and scallops... Finished them all off and then came back to the dried out chicken and cooked it again!! The drink which had no price on the menu Tokyo Tea which is the Japanese Long Island ice tea, tasted like lemon lime soda. In the end we were automatically charged 19% gratuity for just 4 people with no notice. They kept my credit card. Didn't call me to tell me they had it. When I called and asked them to mail it to me they said that I could come to pick it up. Our meal was $200 I expect white glove service and the top of line cuisine with an authentic Japanese atmosphere. Like the Asian experience at Hakkasan. All of the meats were dried out and vegetables over cooked. The chef had fire everywhere and did not seemed to have the onion volcano act perfected. He never did the egg trick that I've seen every single time I've gone. These are the kind of things that I would tip 20% for. Gratuity is usually automatic on large groups. If you like this restaurant, you would be advised to go soon they will not be open much longer, the last two times we've been in there two of us were the only two people in the restaurant at 5 PM for dinner, service is well done, but the quality of food and the process for getting the food has gone downhill so much in the last few years we've been coming here for over 10 years.
