After reading several Yelp reviews and hearing recommendations from friends, we finally made our way to Knuckleheads one Saturday afternoon. I don't know why, but I exoected a dark dive bar...it was not that! Cool modern decor and a casual vibe. We had Delaney as our server, and she was a sweetheart!! Looking at the menu, we wanted one of everything! It was a very hard decision. We tried the wings to start, spicy bourbon BBQ. Yum! Wings were perfectly crispy and well sauced. We were pretty full after eating the wings so could not go for the huge burgers this time. We got hot dogs to share, one junkyard dog, one Flyin' Hawaiian. Both were excellent, but I preferred the junkyard dog. We also got an order of sweet potato fries to share, and they were just as good as other reviewers said. They are a must have!! I was also very happy that they had Downeast cider on the tap list. We will definitely be back to try so many other items from the menu that sounded great...pulled pork Mac and cheese melt, chicken n waffles, burgers, more wing flavors! We were intended for another locale, but as chance would have we were lost. Then through the fog, yes literally, the fog, Knuckleheads appeared and our direction was changed. Appearing like your average burger & dog joint from the outside. Inside, far from it. I was immediately drawn to the significant tap beer board with 20-30 high end brews. My Candy Shop Eyes and Glare went into hyper mode. I settled for a Founders Backwoods Bastard, fresh and well served. Onto the menu, "Woe" not your average. Flavors: spices, meats, sauces, vegetables, and grilled pineapple ALL creatively intermingled in a taste bud explosion! My experience here was horrible. We stood by the "wait to be seated" sign for at least 10 mins as waitresses kept walking by not acknowledging us. When we finally stopped one and asked if we could be seated the girl with purple ends in her hair gave us the worst attitude and clearly talked shit about us in front of our faces to her co-worker. And then, the food was also horrible. My family and I are big fried pickle lovers and these are the worst we ever had. It was overly seasoned in the worst way, and extremely thin there was barely any pickle and they were definitely fried twice. But the worst part was the "mac & cheese"... im not even kidding it was just noodles with butter. My Honey was away in Jersey, so because it was V-day, figured a bar would be the best choice to grab something to eat tonight. Usually I would head to Archie Moore's in Wallingford after work, but wanted to give Knuckleheads a try, never been there before. First thing I noticed when I got a seat at the bar -- no TV's. Wasn't like there was some great sporting event to watch at the time, but to be honest, the lack of any TV's at Knuckleheads would make me go elsewhere if there was a Game on. Nice variety of beers, I went with a Thimble Island American Ale (it was excellent, loved it). Ordered the Pulled Pork Mac & Cheese Melt with Sweet Potato fries. Food came out FAST (almost TOO fast). Thought the melt was OK, but nothing special. Sweet Potato fries were good though. Might give Knuckleheads another try though, maybe go with the Pig Wings next time. But it seems like a place frequented by a much younger crowd then myself -- when a Motley Crue song was playing on the stereo, the bartenders were asking, "who's this" ? Although they provide several "local" beers within the New England area, they also seem to have a diversified set of beers from across the country. Coming from the west coast, I was able to get a taste of home while venturing into the brews of the east coast. Always a welcome treat! Knucklehead burger was a hefty size and the fries were on point. Only complaint was that I ordered the burger medium rare, it came out closer to medium to medium well. Great atmosphere and very friendly staff. Decor is great and the over all look is nice. Its very underwhelming outside. When you step inside it's like a completely different place. When my boyfriend and I stepped inside, all the tables were taken but one so you know it's a popular place. Waitress left at 1:17 to get our stuff. Appetizer came out 1:27, food came out at 1:35. The only thing I think they should do to make the place a little better is if you're sitting in the seats that are taller, you can see the head lamps pretty well and they're dusty and dirty. They definitely need a good scrub. I've noticed theres little dust particles floating around like bigger than usual so I think cleaning the glass on the lamps would help alot. We started with the cheese curds for an appetizer. These are definitely home made and the breading is good. If you're hoping for frozen cheese curds then you dont want to order them here. "I would come back just for these"- my boyfriend says.the batter is a little sweet and it matches well with the cheese inside. Their maranara sauce is a little acidic. They probabaly could add more sugar when making it if its home made. It's not bad per say. It's just my moms is better xD I got the blood dog which was the mozzarella pepperoni and bacon and maranara sauce. My boyfriend got the pulled pork mac and cheese sandwich and coleslaw. My boyfriend said "I mean it's good, interesting." The coleslaw is to die for and this review deserves a 5 just for that xD Mac and cheese pulled pork is great. So to start with a drink I ordered a beer. Creme brûlée stout! Excellent! It really smells and tastes like the name! For dinner I had a Smoked Cuban melt. Pulled pork, ham, swiss and pickles with yellow mustard and mayo on grilled pressed rolls. Yes plural, it is served on TWO rolls panini style. The melt came with nice and crispy fries. Very very good! Had the homemade baked beans which were fantastic, and the mac and cheese which was also really good! I had to try the sweet potato fries from my wife and those where also goo. Went to knuckleheads last night for dinner. First time we dined there since it moved to North Main Street from Center Street. From the minute we walked in until we left it was a great dining experience! The host quickly took our names, the bartenders quickly served us while we waited for our table (totally reasonable wait time) and Trinity worked our table and did a great job. After reading some other good reviews, we decided to stop here yesterday for dinner before attending a concert nearby. When we arrived, the restaurant was busy and there were no available seats, so we put our name on the waitlist. The space itself has a bar, downstairs seating area, and an upstairs seating area as well. We were informed that bar is first come first serve so customers can skip the waitlist if they find an available table. Staff was friendly and the host/food runner informed incoming customers of the longer than usual wait because of the concert crowd and he kept checking in with customers who were waiting which was appreciated. All in all, even with the busier than usual crowd, the wait time only ended up being around 10-15 minutes. Food was delicious. We ordered the Big Jerk sandwich with chipotle mayo on the side and a side of sweet potato fries. The chicken was juicy and flavorful. The only thing that could've been better was if some of the bun didn't soak up as much of the juice from the pineapple on the sandwich. Aside from that, the side of sweet potato fries came in a generous sized portion and they had sweet glaze on them. HANDS DOWN some of the best sweet potato fries I've ever had.. if you like sweet potato fries order them from here..You won't regret it! We also ordered a Brisket Sandwich with the spicy bourbon bbq sauce and side of regular fries (not pictured). Was excited to see this Wallingford neighborhood favorite back in a new location. I've visited twice since it's reopen. Once for lunch with my family and a second time for drinks after dinner with three local friends. Lunch service was fine, new staff still trying to work out their flow during a very busy service and food was that familiar menu from before. My second experience however was awful. My friends and I arrived around 7:30 to a busy bar. There was a sign that said kitchen closed. We looked around to find a spot either at the bar or a table in the bar to sit. We found a table which a busser came over and offered to clean for us. Once sat we waited about 15 minutes to put in drinks when a staff member approached us to ask "how did you sneak in here" and let us know we needed to get up for another group. No offer made to be sat elsewhere when available or to assist us with drinks. Needless to say I won't be returning. read more

Really love this place, the food is very good and would highly recommend but the kitchen hours really make us scratch our heads. We always want to order to go, and either go to the website or call to find out that they are either not taking to go orders or the kitchen is completely closed. These are Friday and Saturday nights and they are completely closed on Sundays, what is usually the busiest times for a restaurant. They've lost out on a ton of business just from us, especially on Sundays when we have people over and want to order a ton of food for the game. We will continue to go here for lunch when we can, but with limited hours would really love to visit more! read more

This is a neighborhood pub burger joint putting extra creativity and spirit into their food inventions. Somebody in the kitchen mixes up sauces, usually with booze in them. They are tasting and tweaking. They keep adding this and that until they get to something a little special. The result: you can taste the love in the big burger with bleu cheese and a "scotch ale" sauce. The poutine has a strange gravy that is mouthwatering despite the fact that its almost... sweet. Sweet poutine is a new one for me, but I'm sure there's booze in it. Recommended. A hidden winner that's barely on the menu: the super rich chili they add to fries. It's so thick with flavor and meat that the scoop on the plate nearly stands up as a cube. It is exactly the savory powerhouse you want over potatoes. I have a love/hate relationship with Knuckleheads. My first impression. My son lives next door to the bar/restaurant and I recently moved in. I'm retired and disabled and I sit at least half my day next to my kitchen window which is usually open and what do I smell all day long... you guessed it.. Knuckleheads. All that lusciousness wafting past my nose ... I swear I have gained weight just from the smell. My first visit. My son and I went there after a long stay in the hospital. The place was getting packed. The waiter came over as we entered and offered his assistance. He helped guide me to a seat at an open table (I have use a walker). He made sure I was comfortable and then proceeded to talk about the selections of beer etc.. brought me a sample of a couple different IPA's. Then talked about the food selections. My son got the Caesar salad without the chicken as he is vegetarian. The portion was huge. My son loves it. It's one of his favorites. I ordered "The Knucklehead". Simple yet delicious. Cooked perfectly. This is my go to. Never fail perfect every time. All in all, if you are looking for a good place to go,I recommend Knuckleheads. Great food.. great beer.. great people. Fantastic spot! Buns for the hotdogs are really great. Had the junkyard dog with chili and coleslaw! For under $5 it was a meal! Other dogs at the table were a bacon wrapped dog with homemade beans, a bacon wrapped dog with onions/peppers and provolone and a "plain jane" with just kraut. This was phenomenal. We started with the Irish nachos. They were good. Tater tots with scallions, bacon, cheese and sour cream. I'm a little upset they took the risotto balls off the menu. A lot of draft beer selections. Not usually that many dark beers on tap. The burgers are enormous. My favorite is the boozed and bruised. It is Filled with blue cheese and is amazing. The pulled pork topped with Mac and cheese sandwich is one of a kind and great. The sweet potato fries here are the best I have ever have. They are kind of crinkle cut which isn't very common, but they are cooked with maple syrup and you can definitely taste that with every bite. This place is just great and I try to go every time I'm in Wallingford. It makes Archie Moore's across the street look awful. read more

We came to Knuckleheads on a Friday night before a show at the Oakdale. As expected it was busy. We had to wait for a table. There's not really a place to wait so they have you line up in the bathroom hallway. Luckily we didn't have to wait too long. We ordered from the extensive beer list, and our waitress was very knowledgeable in terms of the offerings. We also ordered some Fried Cheese Curds as an appetizer, but this didn't come until our main meals arrived. I really liked the Curds but wish they would have come out sooner. It was a large portion too which I always appreciate. For our main meals I had the Patty Melt and my husband had the Steakhouse burger with sweet potato fries. Both burgers were huge. I couldn't finish all of mine. I loved the sweet potato fries and wish I would have ordered them. 3 stars because our meal was good and I would come back, but next time we're in Wallingford for a show I wouldn't say "Oh we have to go to Knuckleheads again." read more

Excellent lunch here! I am glad to see such a fun joint in the center of Wallingford. Service was friendly, but seemed overwhelmed. It was a busy place at lunchtime, with all different types of people grabbing a bite to eat. I went with one of the specials--the triple threat dog--bacon wrapped hot dog topped with pulled pork and cheese sauce on a buttered, grilled bun. I did not want to give up a bite to the hubby it was so good (but I did anyway since I am such an awesome wife). I also got a side of the sweet potato fries--huge portion size with great sweet flavor to them. Tom had the Big Kahuna burger--with bacon, grilled onions, pineapple and chipotle mayo--he said it was the chipotle mayo that really made this burger and defined things for his tastebuds. I kept hearing about this pulled pork and mac 'n cheese melt, so I had to try it myself. It was exactly what I thought it would be, and it was pretty wonderful - cheese on both slices of buttery, toasty white bread, a layer of juicy barbecue pulled pork, and a layer of creamy mac 'n cheese, all coming together in crunchy, melty goodness. I came here with a friend for the first time today, and it won't be my last. The food is definitely not what you're looking for if you're on a diet, but if you want greasy, creative bar food, this place has it. Lots of burger options, bacon wrapped hot dogs, and a variety of wings. Prices are decent. With fries, my melt was $8.99, and our total dinner tab for two people with drinks came to just under $30 before tip. The beer selection is pretty great, too, with 30 taps. read more

I love Knuckleheads. The menu is amazing, to begin with. There is a burger for everyone there; I prefer the Kahuna burger without a bun. I've also had the nachos, hot dogs, and other apps and have always been happy with my food. I was sad when they changed the sweet potato fries but they are still the best in town. As for the beer... I would go every day if I could. Knuckleheads is great at supporting and promoting local beers by having Tap Takeovers on a regular basis. The bartenders are knowledgeable and friendly and will take a minute to go over the options with you if you're not sure what you want. You can't ever go there with a beer in mind, even if they had it on tap yesterday, because the 30-ish beers on tap are rotated regularly. I've been there when they've completely erased the list and started from scratch because so many logs tapped out. If the food and the beer were all that mattered, this would be a 5-star review. My only complaint is that the bar side is not the most comfortable place to hang out. There are only a handful of tables and they are taken quickly by people who couldn't get tables on the restaurant side... who then sit there all night. I wish there was a spot at the bar specifically for people who don't have a seat, otherwise you are elbowing people out of the way to order your own drinks, or standing in front of the waitress station and getting nasty looks. They have a back room that isn't really used for much of anything, so I wish they would expand back there and maybe put more tables. read more

Love Knucks. We frequent there quite a bit. My husband does Keto and they do an AWESOME lettuce bun burger for him. The wings are perfect. The sandwiches are bomb. I love their pretzel rolls too. I was going to the Fitz and the Tantrums show last night, and a friend suggested we go to this place for drinks and food beforehand. I'm not from the area, but she had been here before and it was clearly her first choice out of three places she mentioned, so I agreed. Knuckleheads has a really cool setup. It's half restaurant, half bar. We sat in the restaurant part. The menu mainly consists of hamburgers, hot dogs, and sandwiches. The hot dog selection was awesome. I'm not usually a hot dog person when I go out to eat, and I almost got the pulled pork/Mac and cheese melt, but I decided I would go with one of the hot dogs because I figured I wouldn't easily get to try another kind of hot dog like that anywhere else. All of the hot dogs came wrapped in bacon. The one I got was called the Chihuahua Dog - bacon wrapped dog, guacamole, jalapeños, sour cream, and salsa. Bigger than your regular hot dog. And so delicious. I tried a bite of my friend's Hybrid Moments hot dog (bacon, fried egg, cream cheese, American cheese, and Thai chili sauce)...awesome. There are no words. They have a really unique beer selection. I got the Local Option Morning Wood amber ale (which is actually out of a Chicago brewery). Probably wouldn't get it again because I tend to like lighter-tasting beer, but it was nice to try an option I had never heard of before. They had a specialty $5 cocktail, too, which seems unusual for a Friday night- a lot of bars seem to take advantage of the fact that people will be out drinking on a Friday night and don't offer many specialties, but the drink was really good, especially if you were willing to pay an extra $2 for the cucumber vodka upgrade- REALLY refreshing. Our waitress was Delaney and she was great. It was a really busy night, and it did take the food a long time to come out. One of the downsides was that some of us got our food before others (went in a group of five and the hot dogs came out a good 15 minutes before the burgers), so if you're the type who waits to eat your food until everyone is served, you would have been eating cold food. Luckily we weren't that kind of group. The sweet potato fries were the best I've ever had anywhere, and I get them at most restaurants I go to. They seem to have been baked in maple syrup. Didn't even need ketchup or any other kind of dip with them. I also ordered a side of mac and cheese (homage to my original menu selection), and I'm glad I got to experience that. Four stars due to some of the food coming out so much later, but it was worth the wait and seems like a really cool place to hang out. I decided to go sweet tater fries and boy did I ever make the right choice. Just an update Knuckleheads now has a bar right next to it called "The Taproom". I'm glad to see that they seem to really be doing so successful. Everything I've tried, I've never been disappointed. I really love this place. Last stop I got "The Mean Picholine" Dog. Bacon wrapped dog with peppers, onions, and provolone. I love peppers and it did not disappoint. I love Knucks! They have an excellent beer selection. I'm a huge IPA fan, but what I love about Knuckleheads is that they have a wide-variety that includes porters/stouts, lagers, etc., so there's something for every kind of beer drinker out there. Their hot dogs are fantastic and their brisket is my favorite thing! My friend got a chicken Caesar salad wrap and that was great, too! Fair warning to everyone out there, though, the actual bar area is small, but there's another dining area. They're usually busy on weekends, but I've always had a good experience. read more

Happy they are back open, but really don't like the new place. Thankfully the food is still fantastic! My biggest problem is the noise. It has definitely gone hipster. That I can live with, the noise is a real issue for me. If you like to have to yell across a table to whomever you came with, this the place for you. You cant come here expecting gourmet food; that being said if you want crispy delicious wings and hot dogs/burgers with a unique twist this is the place. Lets not forget the exceptional tap list. Went for our first time last night. Ordered the spicy bourbon bbq wings which were exactly what i was hoping; sweet, spicy and very crispy wings (even tho they didnt look crispy- i forget to take pics everything was so good and gone too fast). Next we shared a flying Hawaiian hot dog, yum! You have a bacon wrapped hot dog with grilled onions ans pineapple and a chipolte mayo. So good. Lastly was chili cheese fries- this was the disappointment. Fries were crispy, i do enjoy cheese sauce (its sinful) but the chili was def hormel out of a can chili. Wouldnt get the chili again but inwas easy to scoop off and eat around. We washed it all down with 2 Crispin ciders, which are hard to find in a liquor store let alone on tap at a bar. Service was quick and friendly despite us coming into the restaurant side at closing time. Cant wait to try some of the burgers and sandwiches. The mac and cheese looked awesome! read more
