I recently attended a private event here, and after an excellent event, and hearing from the chef first hand how they are a scratch kitchen, I was eager to go back for regular service. Unfortunately I didn't love Knotty Deck as much as I hoped I would. It was still very good. The deck and the view of the trees and hills is spectacular. Josh Klaus was playing that night, and I absolutely loved him. The ambience of the place is great, and it's a super convenient spot for me to stop on my way home from the office. However, I've paid the same amount for better meals in other restaurants in Austin. I had the grass fed burger and fries ($13) and a side of the brussels sprouts ($6). The burger was a bit on the dry and bland side. The brussels sprouts were quite good and a very generous portion. However these prices are the same as some of the best burgers and brussels sprouts in town, and these were not the best. I feel that the prices are set for people on expense accounts and not to draw in locals. I definitely need to go back and try other items to find the best that Knotty Deck has to offer. read more

Omg these people are on drugs! I had to go to the station to order every round of drinks except two. Even my food orders (we had two orders). The drink orders taken at the table were messed up each time. By that I mean we had to repeat them, or go to the station to order. Our final order was taken three times before it arrived. The GM said he'd comp that round. Guess what. Yep, it was on the ticket. Excuse? A lot is happening tonight. For the first two hours, three servers were covering 8 people on three tables. A party of12 did come in at eight. I think four people should be able to cover less than 30 people three tables plus the party. read more

I am giving this place 3 stars but only because the burger was so awesome. The burger and fries were pretty satisfying, I was pleasantly surprised. I also added a fried egg to send it over the top. It was a great decision, also ask for their in house hot sauce. Everything else was horrible and the service was absolutely pathetic. Drinks to FOREVER and no matter how many times I asked, I never got extra limes for my vodka soda. I asked for extra limes when I ordered my drink, reminded him when he brought the drinks. I requested them again when our food arrived and again when we ordered another round. This went on and on- it's was honestly comical. Needless to say, I never got the limes. Oh well the crappy service and lack on likes was worth it, the burger was up there with my favorites. We sat outside, the patio is pretty cool for a relaxed dinner or a few cocktails. We took a look at the restaurant and since there is nothing special and our reservation was not available we decided to leave. Just don't give the option of reserve a table if you cannot guarantee that it's going to be there waiting for us when we arrive at the restaurant on time. read more

This was our 3rd weekend stay at the Renaissance Austin in the last 18 mos. We were delighted to discover the beautiful deck, and the MOST un-hotel-like food, and menu I've encountered anywhere. (And we're foodies). They've had new seasonal offerings each time, along with their "standards" which are anything but. Shishito peppers, wild boar spare ribs with a perfectly crispy bulgogi sauce and cucumber/radish slaw, the Knotty Burger, habanero mango wings, house-made hummus, pork tacos, and Knotty fries with smoked beef brisket. The seasonal salads are always wonderful as well. Unfortunately, I don't have photos from our past visits. The wait staff has always been consistently personable and helpful, and when they've looked a little short-staffed we've seen managers and hostesses helping out. Saturday night our waiter told us about a sandwich the chef was trying out and my husband went with his suggestion. A house-smoked corned beef Ruben on marbles rye with slaw/thousand island dressing that were house-made as well. It was so good that I only got a photo of the remaining few bites! We'd already had plans to go to one of the top rated BBQ spots in Austin yesterday, and were disappointed that we didn't opt to stay and eat at the Knotty Deck again. As we're driving back to Frisco today I'm planning our return trip! Tip: go after 5-they have a full small-bites menu for the patio. We enjoyed a very pleasant evening at the Knotty deck. We sat outside and sipped a Blackberry whiskey cocktail that was not too sweet and plenty strong. The baby potatoes side dish was perfectly cooked and perfectly seasoned and could make you forget all about French fries. The peach salad was delightful and they fettuccine primavera was light and flavorful. We also tried the ahi tuna guacamole and my boyfriend liked it but it was very Limey. Today was the second time my wife and I attempted to have dinner and drinks here. And for the second time we sat and waited for ten to fifteen minutes with no service. We watched another couple walk in and before they could even sit down a server was waiting with menus. The table directly next to us, got menus and drinks in the time that we sat there. Disappointing as we live in Great Hills and were hoping we could add this is our list of neighborhood fav spots. We won't be returning. read more

Absolute garbage. We came for brunch and ordered bloody marys and an appetizer. Our drinks were watered down and flavorless. 25 minutes later there was no sign of our appetizer (chips and queso... how long does that take?). We only saw our waiter once -- at the beginning when he took our order. Looking around, there were several tables that were clearly waiting for the check for a long time and getting no service. The venue is beautiful, spacious and clean. The cocktail menu and wine lists were extensive. The food was phenomenal. Everything from the food and ambiance this place was amazing. Knotty Deck & Bar is a wonderful place to relax outside with a cool glass of wine while overlooking the Arboretum. It's conveniently located in the Renaissance Hotel so if you have a little too many glasses of wine you can just book a room while your there. Definitely will be back soon! read more

To be fair, it's a 3.5. Classy and upscale interior as you find in many nice hotel bars these days. Interesting drink menu with craft cocktails and a good beer selection. The food menu is upscale southern. Tried the pig ear fries which seemed like a novelty and the shrimp and grits which were tasty. Brisket taco was ok, hard to compete with so many good tacos in town. The back patio was lovely. All in all not a bad place to get a drink or bite if you happen to be in the area but not a place you'd make a special trip for. read more

Knotty Deck is the latest iteration of the hotel bar at the Renaissance. It's a nice, well-suited hotel bar. Staff is friendly, drinks and food are good. Nice deck. But it really is just a hotel bar, nothing particularly noteworthy. A good place to grab a drink if you're staying at the Renaissance; a decent place to meet friends for a drink after work. But if your looking for something special in the NW Austin / Arboretum area I would keep looking. read more

The deck area with the fire pit, twinkle lights, soft seating, and bars was quite the venue! All of the food is made from scratch- bacon is cured in house. The fig and pecan brackets bruscetta and crispy fried pork belly wraps were our favorites. The brisket taco was good, but had too much bbq sauce that drowned the brisket flavor, in my opinion. Let me tell y'all... I came here for happy hour and was pleasantly surprised. We sat in the bar section and even though it was clearly busy, our server andrew took phenomenal care of us. We ordered the brisket tacos and they WERE AMAZING!! as well as the famous Mac n cheese also very good, especially together. After learning we are locals, Andrew took his time to sit down with us and explained the dinner and brunch menu as well as their barrel aging program. After going to their Thanksgiving Buffet which was amazing we decided to go back to eat there for Christmas. This was the first year they decided to have a 3 course meal instead of the buffet and since we loved our meal at Thanksgiving we decided to go anyway. What an extreme disappointment in the food and presentation and we vowed never to go there unless a buffet was served. The quality and choices were amazing at the buffet and this meal was a rip off and very low quality. I certainly hope they will rethink the buffet and maybe advertise more for it as the locals I'm sure would enjoy too. We are looking forward to the Easter Buffet next. read more

Been staying at this hotel for many years and many other Marriotts for business travel. It is my hotel of choice and usually never disappoints. The bar menu and food at this Marriott is much better than the other ones I stay at and I know when I stay at this one, the food is always going to be above average. They changed the bar to a bar/restaurant and the changes are just as good as the previous food menu. The only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is I had a hard time getting service at my table. I had to go to the bar to get a waiter to our table and then had to go back to make my order. Literally we waited 15 minutes before I went to the bar and it really was not that crowded. We ate here multiple times while staying at the Renaissance for a conference. While the food was good and the servers were very friendly, it was slow and staff lacked attentiveness to new customers. Once a server came to the table, they were all very nice and checked in frequently. Multiple times we sat for 10-15 mins before anyone even acknowledged us. The food was also very slow, with exceptions to the last morning. I had to get up and get menus and had to wave a server down to get a drink and place an order. The only person I encountered that didn't appear friendly or enjoying their job was the hostess. She was working each time we were there and I can't remember a smile once, her attitude was dismissive and unenthusiastic. The rest of the staff was pleasant. read more
