Have driven by this spot each time I fly into Phoenix. Finally had an opportunity to try it. The ratings are mostly good, and I like the "hole-in-the-wall/ dive" spots -and this fits the bill. When I walked in -I should have left. The stench of sewer hit me at the door. It could be smelled throughout the restaurant. I ordered what is the number one item in Yelp -Fish n Chips. The fish was good -but certainly not great. The chips were mediocre at best. The fried shrooms were better than fair -but not great. I think my biggest criticism of the food was everything was fried really hard. There were only 2 redeeming factors here: 1. The meal was piping hot. 3. The portions are HUGE. Lots of food. I ate 1 piece of fish and 1 mushrooms. Are one fry. I kind of think this must have just been an "Off evening". The place was full of regulars -so maybe they are better than what I got! The food is consistently good and we love coming here for fish/shrimp and chips when we are in the area. Crispy and tasty without being greasy. Seems made to order and always hot. I wish they carried tartar sauce as a condiment. They have ketchup, cocktail, ranch dressing, and malt vinegar. I received two big pieces of fish and three little pieces to make up for a big piece. The fish was fresh and it was super crispy. Served food not even on menu, Then would not correct mistake. $10.75 Aztec salad consists of one piece of fish small amount of cabbage and tomato, 99% french fries. when brought to attention of staff that all looked like deer in the head lights. Nothing was done to rectify the problem, other than we were told the menus were old. The Sullivan family has built this business by treating customers right since 1947. My family and I have been going to this place for years......until now!!!! The Beeatch that took our order was very rude,unfriendly,crude and acted like she didn't want to be there!!!! I saw this place reviewed on the morning TV show in Phoenix and it was touted as a "must try". There were quite a few diners inside, so maybe they like nasty greasy food. We ordered the lobster tails, fried mushroom/zucchini combo, and 4 of their "famous" tacos. The tacos were flavorless and fell apart in my hand. They brag about a fresh sliced tomato on top of the taco. Hard to argue with it, but it was a paper thin slice of a cherry tomato. The fried mushrooms and zucchini were dripping with fryer grease and mushy. And lastly, the lobster. Overcooked and very small. If I have to say something positive, we didn't get sick. I tried placing an order at 6:40pm only to be told I have to take my food to go because they close at 7pm. OK. No problem. I ordered the fried zucchini and shrimp cocktail, which cost under $20. Good deal. The fried zucchini was delicious, but the shrimp cocktail was more like cold shrimp soup. I was not given any eating utensils or napkins. They also put the fried zucchini in the bag upside down so all the grease created a hole by the time I got back to my hotel a few blocks away. The atmosphere of the restaurant was very comfortable and suiting for the nautical theme of the restaurant. I feel that my words simply do not do this wonderful restaurant enough justice, and for that, you need to try this place for yourself. The hushpuppies and shrimp were truly phenomenal, and the wide variety of sauces allowed me to have the taste of the sea running through my mouth! Always so good. It isn't fancy, it is just done right. Lightly breaded fish... crunchy. And the fish itself, so fresh, firm but tender (not mushy, not over cooked...just perfect...every time). Love eating this delicious fish with a nice light cornmeal breading. The French fries are cooked perfectly, hot and crispy. I've been to other fish places and these portions are very generous. As always the fish and chips are so good. Hush puppies seem to have gotten lighter and nore delicious. My wife loves the fried zucchini whuch is great with the ranch dressing offered at the sauce bar. Speaking of the sauce, if I end up in a hospital I am demanding the cocktail sauce in an IV. When you just want some FABULOUS hot, fried cod. My gosh this fish is amazing. I had 1 piece of cod and I piece of shrimp. It was cooked perfectly and so delicious. Knock Kneed is pretty consistent too. They've been my go to for many many years. As a native Arizonan I know good fish is hard to find but this is the absolute BEST. Nothing fancy. We finally gave it a shot about a week ago after hubby picked me up at Sky Harbor. Overall disappointed. Food was okay - slightly over-fried. Quantity more than adequate. However, for what our 2 meals cost, there should have been waitstaff and ceramic dishes and "real" (not plastic) silverware. Underwhelmed enough that we won't go there again.
