Looking for a great breakfast place? Head to Knapps in Proctor district of Tacoma. First impression: very clean, quick and courteous server and fantastic coffee (you can actually taste it - not the watered down stuff of too many cafe's). I ordered the chicken fried steak with gravy on the side; it was probably the best I've ever had. Steak was tender, not he chewy stuff. Stopped by for a drink or two after farmer market. The place has been around for ages (someone told me) and they just had new owner recently. But we're for their well known drinks. Great staff, clean place, plenty of seats (booth, table, or bar counter). Old fashion decor of 70s/80s but well kept. Drinks are great, nothing fancy but strong and up to the lid...prices wise, sooo cheap that I was jealous that this is not nearby where I live in CA. Love it here, in the mid day and the vibe was lively with different conversations going on, like your friends or neighbors get together and having a good time. This is a solid, standard breakfast spot that also offers some lunch options. The breakfast portions are generous... you definitely get your money's worth. The restaurant appeared clean and the atmosphere was family-friendly. Our waitress was nice and did her job but didn't really go the extra mile. Now, I am giving this review based on a bar, diner type atmosphere, where I'm not looking for fine dining, but great food, interesting patrons, great service, and community. My husband and I needed to ship some Xmas gifts at the local UPS and decided to give Knapps a try. We live less than 5 minutes away and had never been. When we opened the door to the bar area, I thought there was a holiday party happening, but it was the normal Thursday night bingo party (yep!) and we were quickly welcomed, and offered our cards. So fun! Free, and now onto the food. I ordered wings and fries, and they were some of the best I've had in Tacoma. My husband ordered a burger and liked it, but mentioned that it needed seasoning. Katie, our amazing server, has been there 20+ years, and was fantastic! Now, it is a bar and we didn't drink the coffee or have breakfast. What we did have was really good! Ordered a French dip. The meat was chunks of overcooked meat, no cheese as menu stated, and bun only toasted on the bottom side. I knew I had a 16 hr shift ahead and I had to add my own cheese, air fry it for a nice texture myself. Whatever... hopes the taste would at least be there. It was flavorless but all I had to eat so I ate it. Ordered the potato salad as a side and it had so much onion I could barely eat it. Everyone was like "what are you eating? I can smell the onions". If you've ever wondered what kind of food those Sysco trucks deliver just stop on by Knapp's they carry the entire #10 can catalog from soups to gravy! This is quite literally the worst breakfast spot in Tacoma, the only reason it's lasted so long is because it's geriatric patrons who make up 90% of the customer base can't taste food anymore! I had biscuits and gravy, and the gravy felt like eating glue. It was so sticky and flavorless I couldn't imagine it coming from anything besides a good ole #10 can of sausage gravy, and with their recent health rating that was worse than last time I bet it was from yesterday too. The hashbrows were cooked well and crispy like we like but just tasted like old fryer oil. Maybe give that griddle a good scrub down more than once a week and it would've tasted better. I can't believe I wasted over $50 to eat here. If you want a decent breakfast go literally anywhere else. The waitress was also just about as good as the food, no personality and didn't really seem like she wanted to be there. You know how most come by and ask how the food is? I have been a customer for nearly 60 years. I had breakfast here today. The amazing server Angie who has been waiting on me for what seems like a lifetime. I sat at booth next to the counter as I looked at the Menu a lifetime of memories flooded my head. I suddenly remembered who sat in which seat at the counter and the conversations I had with them. I ordered the oatmeal combo which was fantastic and a great value. All of sudden my memory of having oatmeal at the counter when a man in his 90s sat next to me and told me the story of the street clock he built in honor of his late wife and his adventures of working on Big Ben during the war. As my visit progress it came to mind of being 4 years old and ordering a Milkshake while my grandma did hair nextdoor. This place has endured through generations and largely remains the same. It has great caring service and fantastic food at great prices that is a real value.. Tacoma is losing so much of it history. This is a great part of it. We had the perfect pancake. Crisp edges, some tooth to the skin, light and fluffy in the center, absolutely perfect! Also, the most delicious French Toast. This is a bite to be savored, as the flavors of the custard blossom with a little patience. Knapp's is in transition. As always the food was delicious and plentiful. Was part of a group of 15 for lunch. Lynn , the server , was great. She kept the coffee flowing for the caffeine fans. Came here at 8 am Sunday with my toddler. Seated quickly in a booth with a normal menu and kid menu, service was really friendly. Toddler got the pancake breakfast and I ordered the corned beef hash breakfast with fruit, along with milk and herbal tea. Kiddo liked the booth and her food and food came quick. Not busy when we arrived but quite a few more people when we left. Food was good, and it was nice to have a meal at a restaurant and feel very welcomed (not always the case dining solo with kid!). The ambiance and the staff are great. It is an older restaurant that is reminiscent of an old diner. I stopped in for breakfast around 9 AM on a weekday, I was seated immediately and serve, coffee and water, the coffee may well have been the worst coffee I've had anywhere this year. I ordered the biscuits and gravy and added two eggs. The eggs were fine. The hashbrowns were not bad. The biscuits were at best an abomination. They were not flaky. They had really no flavor at all. The menu described it as coming with broiled chicken breast, but what I got was a soggy chicken tender--not even close to what was advertised. Two words: Cobb Salad I love a Cobb salad. Today I walked into Knapps craving one but having no idea what I was in for. I have had my share of bad Cobbs in my 55 years. This was NOT one of them. It was delicious from first to last bite. Wow! They nailed it. Fresh quality ingredients make a difference! The waitstaff was a man with lots of energy and kindness. When I asked for an alternative dressing outside from bleu cheese he suggested 1000 island, as they make it fresh in-house. Then he said, I'll put it on the side in case you are not a fan and we want to switch it out". I loved it, and loved his ability to make me feel like a welcome customer. Never coming back here again...period. Like the prior reviews left today, July 21st, 2024, we were a different party and table of six seated toward the back of the restaurant in the larger private dining room. We arrived at 11:00 AM and were seated by 11:30 AM and our orders were taken rather quickly which we were all excited about. Cocktails and drinks were readily refilled and our waitress did come after about 30-45 minutes after ordering explaining that there was a delay in food and it would be but a little bit longer for food. Our food didn't arrive until around 1:00 PM and every dish was either cold or extremely lukewarm. We all explained to the waitress about our food and was told in no uncertain terms "We don't give discounts for bad service" Wait what! No discount for "bad service"?.... I feel terrible that I ever recommended this place to my Brunch Group and I can confidently say we will never be back and let others know to avoid this terrible "Old-School" Diner. read more

From the hearty oatmeal to the perfectly made scrambled eggs and, of course, the pancake, every bite was moan-worthy. Not only was the food sensational, but the service was top-notch as well. I was a little confused when different people came to check on us throughout the meal. I think we interacted with the entire staff at least once or twice each. All of the ladies were friendly and welcoming, making small talk with the customers and happily greeting people they recognize. This is our fall back breakfast spot and I mean that in the best way. Food is always consistent and simple grub, not overly greasy. Standard breakfast fare items. Sometimes simplicity is better when it comes to breakfast instead of good food being overly made up. We've had probably most items on the menu. We've been coming for probably about 4 years now, my husband longer and I don't recall ever having to wait for a table. There's ample seating and a bar on one side. Came back for breakfast and it hit the spot! I wanted basic good breakfast food and after walking around all of the other restaurants in Proctor and not finding anything on the menu I wanted, Knapps came through. I like diner style hash browns and they made theirs crunchy and great. The poached eggs on the Benedict were perfectly done, the hollandaise was surprisingly good. Also the only place in Proctor you can find a poached egg. Read asked for bacon extra crispy, and they completely delivered! All of the staff was so attentive to us even if we weren't at their table section. We will be coming back here more often. read more

Not sure why this place only has 3 stars? I live going to restaurants with a little history and the markings on the outside of the building let you know you are somewhat stepping back in time. My youngest and I were seated in the main area upon entering the restaurant. I love the touch of neon on the clocks and above the entrance to the lounge. The breakfast menu was not to overwhelming and made selection easy. My youngest went with 2 hotcakes and bacon. These pancakes are light and fluffy and really only need butter smeared all over them. I went with the monster omelet. Eggs fully loaded wit ham, sausage, bacon, onions, mushrooms and peppers. Then hash browns are incorporated into the fold and doused in country gravy. While I could do with a tad more pepper in the gravy, it's still solid. Their coffee is also strong and delicious. Most places have coffee that is weak, so glad that is not the case here. Will so come back again and maybe shoot for lunch or dinner. read more

We've walked by a lot but never stopped in. We keep saying we should try it out. Today we did. Despite the Procter Art Festival we were able to get seated immediately. Service was prompt and friendly. AC was very chilly. The old world bar behind the front door brought back many memories of breakfasts on the road at places like Ho Jo's. Felt like my kind of place. We ordered the Cali scramble with a hot cake and the corned beef hash with an English muffin. The eggs with hash were cooked exactly as ordered and the had had plenty of corned beef - although cubed rather than shredded as the menu indicated (cubed is the way my dad always made it). I'm a sucker for hash browns and these didn't disappoint. The hot cake was very large - took up a small platter. The scramble was tasty and had plenty of avocado, tomato, and bacon. We were very shocked at a $50 price tag for a sandwich that was so burnt there's was no way I was finishing it and a burger that was equally as burnt. The decor is very old and literally sticky & the smell was one of those that hit you hard as you walked in the door. The waitress tried to be nice but all the condiments were empty and it not only took forever for the cook to burn our meal but she was no where to be found for long periods.
