Loved their new weekly specials as well as their later happy hour specials till 7:30pm! Came here on Thursday for their specials! Thursday is 50% off selected deep fried and raw food. They also have happy hour $5 drinks. I ordered Yuzu Tonic, which was delicious! We ordered the fried tofu, fried eggplant, stir fry rapini with ramen egg, calamari, and the happy hour wings and Sapporo beer combo, the lamb chops with fries, half salmon tataki with hamachi ceviche. Everything was delicious! Next time we have to try the rest of the menu! I also want to try the $15 ramen lunch special! read more

During the pandemic, I wanted to get ramen from Kiu Japanese Restaurant. I could not schedule my drop-by time with its hours of operation. My timing to drop by Kiu after an afternoon matinee at Cineplex was also messed up. Kiu was always closed after the movie was over. All those weird scheduling issues went away when I attended a Yelp event last December. We got to enjoy more traditional Japanese offerings. Kiu wanted a bit of a change from being known as the ramen place. This eatery is on the second floor with Cineplex, GoodLife Fitness, and more. You can get here by escalator or elevator. The Yelp event had the best sashimi. I sampled scallops, shrimp, and deep-fried shrimp heads. I also enjoyed proteins. They included New Zealand lamb, amazu chicken, and calamari. This eatery also had sushi. The torched sushi was especially excellent. I still haven't had ramen here. Someday, I will! Recently, during Lunar New Year, I was invited to my friend's place for dinner. I brought a dish. She brought a Kiu platter. It had something like thirty pieces of sashimi. It was chef's choice with the varieties. Everything was exceptionally fresh and yummy. I'm drooling reminiscing about how good the sashimi was. It was nice to know that you can still get takeout from this restaurant. I got the impression that the owners wanted more folks to enjoy the experience at their eatery. It was still special devouring amazing sashimi at my friend's place. There are individual gender-neutral washroom stalls in this eatery. Each one was wheelchair-accessible. I appreciated the mouthwash and toothpicks in the one that I used. It was clean and felt fancy. It's a wonderful restaurant. There are items at various prices to suit your budget. This restaurant is located on the second floor. When I walked into the restaurant, I was impressed by the ambiance. It was darker but that contributed to the more modern, sleek atmosphere. Service was very good and attentive. We were checked on several times, things were well explained to us. Waitstaff were always polite. Now on to the food... we ordered the taster 8 pressed sushi sampler, oroshi maguro, snow ebi ten rolls, grilled Atlantic salmon and calamari. We enjoyed all of it, but the stand outs for me were the torched sushi and the rolls. The Atlantic salmon was tasty and so was the calamari but they weren't outstanding. Price wise, the dishes are pricier. But on Mondays, the pressed sushi is 50% off and on Wednesdays, grilled menu items are 50% off. I'm not sure when this promotion is until. A disappointment was the three most popular Japanese whiskeys were sold out. My hubby had wanted to try one of them. read more

Decor When you first walk into Kiu you are immersed in the feeling on classy modern dark décor with Japanese accents and embellishments. You are thinking "this is nice and classy". You know someone spent alot of time and thought putting this together... from the décor, furniture, dinnerware and utensils... they are all in the same theme. Presentation Again alot of attention goes into each dish. You know you are in a fine dinning experience. Perfectly placed and decorated in a modern theme brining in some seasonal environmental elements (fall harvest theme). Taste With Sashimi, it's all about the freshness, quality of the product and the knife work. I have an sensitivity to fishiness and the fish was very good. I was really surprise by the lamb chop. I have an aversion to gamey flavours and this lamp was amazing... no gamey flavour at all (Sorry if you are a fan of the gamey meats). This was perfect for me. It totally change my mind about lamb and I'm will to try it at other places. The sauce was a nice pairing a little citrusy and creamy with a nice roasted flavor. Not sure what it was but I wanted more. The Amazu Chicken had a nice flavor and the Calamari was super crispy (though I would like a little more seasoning on squid as it's natural flavour is very subtle). Service The wait staff were extremely attentive ensuring our glasses were always topped ups. You never felt like you needed to work to get their attention. They were happy to answer question about the menu and how items were prepared. Not sure if it was an off day and where the problem occurred (kitchen or wait staff?) but I think our dishes were stuck in the "pass" a little longer than planned and ended up being cooler than I would have liked and the chicken was no longer crispy. If they arrived warmer and crisp the marks for taste would be higher. But the restaurant was full and it was a Wednesday night so they may not have been operating at full staff. The truffle carbonara udon here was delicious. The service was good and our food came quite quickly. They left a pitcher of water on our table as well which was helpful. The space is quite large, with plenty of seating available. The music playing in the background adds to the experience, as the restaurant wasn't too busy or noisy otherwise. Visited on a cold autumn evening. There was plenty of parking in the area (both surface and underground). The service however varied depending on the server. There was a server that was managing the front area and reception that was very rude and ignore any subtle signals to order (raising hand, waving hand, etc). There was another server that was japanese and apologized and answered any questions and told our order immediately. The food for the kaiseki hit the spot but it took ridiculously long for them to serve each dish. Also by the time they served the dessert portion. The dish that I requested earlier was sold out. To me, this is poor planning and left a bad taste for visitors. A restaurant should always make sure they have enough inventory before confirming the order. It would have been fine if they told us it was sold out prior to ordering. But to be told at the end, they sold out is very unprofessional. The service was great--attentive and efficient without being intrusive. I ordered the tonkotsu ramen, and it did not disappoint. The broth was packed with rich, savoury flavours, the pork was tender and creamy. Overall, Kiu is a solid spot for ramen, especially during the colder months. Kiu recently changed up their menu and I wanted to check out their kingyo set . Definitely filling and tasty for what you get I'd recommend trying out without fully breaking the bank. The cocktail drinks are on the sweet side not my favourite part of the meal. I got the seasonal pumpkin cocktail and got the matcha yuzu I believe cocktail. The service was paced out nicely although near the end we were so stuffed they were still able to pace it in a way we didn't feel rushed. It's always a great time overall at Kiu! read more

The is a nice restaurant in a relatively new cineplex building. I liked it because it was open late and served Japanese food. My boss had been here earlier in the week and mentioned how good the lamb chops were. 4 stars for the lamb chops in my opinion. There were four small pieces of lamb. They were tender, savory, and charred just right. Other folks may not like the lamb but I think it was cooked fine. A drawback is that it may not fill you up if you've got a big appetite like me! So I ordered a bowl of white rice on the side and that was *just* enough to satisfy my tummy! For fun I asked for sesame seeds to sprinkle on top for show. I like sesame seeds and it added flavor to the rice. 5 stars for the service. I came in late that night. There was still an hour left before they closed but they still served me with a smile. The waitress, Alvina, gave me descriptions and recommendations for different dishes. The food came out fairly quick too. (Thankfully I was seated near the kitchen.) If I come back I'll probably try the combo meals to taste a variety of what Kiu has to offer. read more

Our first visit here was shortly after they opened, since it's been a while we decided to drop by for dinner. Not a lot has changed with the interior. The menu was slightly different, there was a lot more donburi and udon bowls from what I last remember. Food was okay. They had a dinner for 2 combo ($95.00) that had several courses. Sashimi bowl was fresh and the sushi was okay, nothing remarkable. I don't recommend the udon bowls as the noodles were clearly packaged udon noodles and had a odd texture. In one of the photos you can see the noodles all clumped together in the bowl. The beef and broth in the bowls was okay though. The dinner combo comes with your standard ice cream dessert and you have several flavours to choose from including matcha and red bean. It was okay. For the price I am sure you can get better quality elsewhere. read more

Pros: they offer a tasting menu with wine pairing at a very reasonable price, delicious food, everything tasted so fresh, everything was very well- prepared, service was great and attentive, cocktail menu had unique offerings, mocktail menu was equally appealing, restroom was very clean, ample free parking. Japanese cuisine cravings? Try Kiu! My friend and I swung by for a Sunday lunch. I was surprised by how empty the restaurant was given the modern decor, but nevertheless decided to try Kiu out. The menu was divided into different sections: Noodles, set meals (Teishoku), Donburis, Sushi Dons, Sushi etc. I would say this place definitely has a wide range of Japanese dishes, diverse enough to satisfy a larger party's cravings. As always, we started off with an order of their Takowasabi. We were slightly disappointed by the portion size and the 4 pieces of limp nori - that's a dish we've definitely had better elsewhere. For mains, my friend ordered the Kamo Udon (cha siu style duck breast). Personally, I prefer chewier noodles with a bite and a cleaner broth - if you're like me, you may be dissatisfied with the cook on the udon itself. The rich and oily broth was not unexpected given the protein, but I do wish some of the fat and oil would've been skimmed. There was a generous portion of duck breast, albeit slightly overcooked. We both agreed that the duck could have been more tender and aromatic. I ordered the Edo Teishoku (rotating sushi bar specials), and absolutely loved the meal. Each Teishoku comes out with rice, miso soup, and 3 different dishes of tsukemono (pickled vegetables) that help to cleanse the palate after bites of rich, raw fish and seafood. My box came with sweet and creamy uni, salty ikura, and refreshing negitoro. I would say, this was definitely the highlight of the meal! The menu is a little bit on the pricier side, but I wouldn't mind coming back to try Kiu's sushi and sashimi selection from their sushi bar. I will, however, defer on the udon and get that elsewhere. read more

Since both the Chinese and Japanese culture celebrate Lunar Mid-Autumn Festival (Tsukimi in Japanese). I thought of an innovative way to celebrate this year Lunar Mid-Autumn Festival by having sushi instead of Cantonese cuisine to avoid the crowd. Everything we ordered at the Kiu Japanese Restaurant are delicious. Geoduck Sashimi: Geoduck Sashimi is my all-time favourite, which I haven't had it for at least 10 years simply because it is just too expensive. I actually saved the very last piece of Geoduck Sashimi for the end of the meal. The last piece is still crispy, bounce, and pure ocean sweetness. Kiwami Nigiri [11 pieces] x 2: Sushi chef skill is very good and you can taste the freshness of their fishes. The sushi rice is hand pressed just right, not too hard but does not fall apart. The sushi rice vinegar and salt are just right. Oshi Sushi [15 Pieces mixed]: Sushi chef skill is good and each type of Oshi Sushi have a different fish / seafood taste. As many lower-end sushi restaurant's Oshi Sushi tasted all the same. The sushi rice is pressed just right, not too hard but does not fall apart. You do notice the chef put more salt on the Oshi Sushi rice compare to the Nigiri sushi. Kiu Signature Maki [Hotate and Snow Crab]: Gimmick points for the restaurant server fire torched the Kiu Signature Maki right in front of the customer. The Hotate (scallops) is fresh and flavourful. Kamo Udo: The duck breast is tender and cooked just right, the Udo is not overcook, and the soup base is very flavourful but not salty. Baked Oysters: Typical Japanese style baked oyster with the right amount of Japanese mayo sauce and the oyster is very sweet. Chawanmushi: The steam egg is smooth and not overcook. It is a bit salty for me but my father loves it. Sashimi platter [9 pieces]: My dad enjoys their fishes so much, we ordered an additional nine pieces Sashimi platter just for him. Of course, I stolen a piece of Hotate and Tuna Sashimi from his Sashimi platter. Dessert: As we attempt to order the dessert, a lady came to our table and told us our 2 hours time is up. Asking us to finish up and leave. At that moment, my dad still has half the sashimi platter to be finish. Since the food is great and the waiter service is excellent, I forgive it this time. The restaurant did not tell my sister there is a two hours limitation when she made the reservation. If you are spending more than $500 CDN for a meal for four people and do not want to ask to leave at 2 hours sharp, than book somewhere else. It's our first time doing a la carte for sushi as we normally do AYCE, but this may be our last time coming here. As most reviewers mentioned, it has nice decor and an open sushi making area, however, compared to the price we paid for the quality / portion we received, it's a little "French-style"- small but well presented meal on a big plate. We have ordered the Nabeyaki Udon (Chicken, mushrooms, onsen tamago, and assorted vegetables with housemade udon and dashi), Gindara Miso Yaki (cod), Kiu Signature Roll, and Tekka Roll. All were well presented when brought to our table... The udon was served on a clay pot yet the udon didn't has that chewy, bounciness you looked for in a "housemade" udon, the broth tasted like diluted sukiyaki sauce, and the chicken pieces were really small. The cod... same thing, well seared fish on a stone plate with some tempura ginger sprout, didn't have the miso flavour at all. The signature roll was torched right in front of us (oooo fancy), which gave it a smokiness taste together with the scallop and snow scrab inside. Tekka roll... was just a blue fin tuna roll. Oh did I mention all the items on the menu were in translated Japanese with Chinese on the side? As some of us didn't study Japanese nor have the ability to read Chinese, how do one expect what to order? Yes, there were descriptions for each dish, however, some were also in Japanese which meant NOTHING to them. Luckily I was able to act as the dictionary for my friends. Basic Canadian Don . Kiu Restaurant has been the premier Japanese dining experience in the heart of Downtown Markham since time. Their menu items are priced on the relatively high end, which is compensated by a higher quality of ingredients used. . I opted for the Canadian Don, which had salmon, toro, and ikura sashimi on a bed of seasoned sushi rice. The salmon wasn't particularly special, but the ikura was very fresh and the mashed toro tastes quite good when mixed with the rice . I ended up paying $30 before taxes and tips for this bowl, which I found not worth it For the price I paid, I expected more ikura and toro but it seemed like half of the seafood was salmon sashimi. Sashimi was fresh, well cut and offered a nice range of higher quality including toro, scallops to say a few. Didn't have that tainted seafood flavour, which is great and can tell its fresh. Good temperature on the cuts. Udon broth was fragrant and not overly salted. Duck meat surprisingly was quite nice after the first chew but I didn't necessarily like the pairing of their duck with the udon soup. Tempura freshly battered and fried. Good crunch and texture with balanced seasoning. Oshisushi was good but nothing too spectacular. Can have less mayo and more flavour forward in this sense. My favourite would be the toro with truffle. Karaage was nice as chicken was juicy and good coating on the outside. Right meat to batter ratio, fresh oil used to try. Salmon carpaccio was nice with the yuzu citrus shining through. Onions gave it another dimension in flavour and texture. Best was the fish roe providing a good salty umami to the salmon. read more

Came here on a Wednesday evening and it was quite empty. The server was attentive and very detailed oriented in handling our order, such as checking dietary restrictions and offering to have certain ingredients on the side. We ordered the Teba Gyoza, Katsu Don, Avocado Maki, and Salmon Oshi. We asked specifically and were told that the egg in the Katsu Don would be fully cooked due to dietary restrictions but it actually arrived with runny egg white. We informed the server and were told that they'd make it again. However, when it came back steaming hot a few minutes later, although the egg was now fully cooked, the katsu was soggy and not crispy at all. It made us wonder if they just microwaved it. The Teba Gyoza was pretty interesting. The sushi rolls were good too. The Katsu Don was however disappointing; even though it tasted good flavour wise, the texture was not good due to the sogginess of the Katsu. Not sure if we'd come back anytime soon again. Misleading item on Ritual App, this is a problem with Ritual App+Kiu Restaurant. I really got into a pickle with this restaurant on the Ritual App, I ordered some fried chicken and two bowls of ramen sold as a kit. I was in the area looking for a nice hot bowl of something to enjoy with a friend outdoor. The kit on the ritual app did not disclose that the item was FROZEN and I needed a pot. It also did not disclose there were no cutlery. I am somewhat disappointed because it was priced like the dine in menu but required the addition of cooking and straining. I basically received two vacuum sealed bags. I hope this restaurant can update their menu items in the Ritual App to disclose this an At-Home-Cooking-Required-Kit. When I picked it up, I was shocked and I asked the girl very honestly this requires cooking?!? She assured me it's very easy, but I just drove 35min into town! Always come to downtown Markham cineplex but never noticed this place until I was looking up places to eat in Markham. Great service and great food. For food, my boyfriend and I split some torched sushi which they torch right in front of you. I got the teriyaki combo, while my boyfriend got the ramen. I was surprised as my meal came with so much food, very filling and so many options to choose from. This is a great spot to go to if you're ever craving Japanese food and in the area. Honestly THE best food I had in Toronto. So ecstatic that this place was a stones throw away from my hotel downtown. I must of ate here 3 times, for the 4 nights I was in town. I came specifically for the soup....soup always reels me in.....and stayed a bit longer for the fabulous cocktails. Some of the most amazing handmade cocktails I've ever had. I've been to a lot of niche speakeasy's and bars, trying to find the next best thing, but this bartender was something else, he was truly a genius; sitting at the bar you can just see this guys brain cranking out these insanely delicious cocktails, scheming of a new one, once he finished his current creation. I specifically sit at bars when I eat because you really get to see how the staff is and they took such care and preparation with each dish, cocktail, and with such intention. The food was simply amazing and flavorful, and what quality! So fresh. At the end of the night I asked the bartender to make me a drink for a dessert nightcap, with pistachio liqueur.....probably the best drink I've ever had. Visited Kiu last year in November for an anniversary celebration. I had booked ahead of time and Yelp asked me if it was an occasion, so I said it was our anniversary, which was true. We arrived and they took us to our table overlooking outside. When we arrived at the table, there a small bottle of champagne and a card congratulating us on our anniversary, which was really sweet. From there, we had looked through the menu and decided what we want to eat. The servers were very polite and extremely knowledgeable on the menu and how everything tasted. We visited Kiu for weekend lunch right before York Region was back to a new lockdown. Since we were a group of 4 and the restaurant could only sit 10 people at one time, they allowed us dine in their special VIP karaoke room, which was so beautiful and quiet! The highlight of everything we ordered was definitely the Tokusen Bara Chirashi Don. It was quite pricey but I feel it could serve 3-4 people as long as you order other dishes on the side. I love how fresh the sashimi on rice was and the ikura (salmon roe) added some really nice flavour. We also ordered Salmon Oshi Sushi and Chicken Karaage, which I felt were comparable to other higher end Japanese restaurants. My friends also tried their ramen which they felt was okay as well. We dined in for lunch with my husband and two little kids on Sunday lunch. When we arrived around 1 pm, the restaurant was empty. We were warmly welcomed by staff which was very pleasant. Our server was super nice and friendly. He offered some stickers and crayons for coloring which kept our super active toddler busy while eating. Overall very good but not the best sushi in town. The environment was pleasant and friendly service. For the price I thought it could have been tastier and even better service. The chicken karaage was very good and would order again. The 12 piece oshi sushi was good but the best was the salmon. If I come again I would only order the salmon aburi sushi. The lychee cheesecake desert was only ok. I would not order it again. Overall good but for the price it could be much better. read more

We went here for a pre-movie dinner and got three of their deluxe maki rolls: the kiu signature, snow crab and shrimp tempura, and spicy aburi salmon. The rolls were good but the signature roll is a really rich, acquired taste while you couldn't really taste the snow crab in the other roll. The vegetable tempura had a good variety and the service was great. Overall, a very convenient option if you're in the area. read more

Wanted to splurge for dinner and ended up coming to Kiu. We ordered a assortment of sashimi as well as an anago don. We got uni, kamatsu, aji, hirame, madai, akami, chutoro, and otoro. The aji and the tuna trio set was exceptionally good. Will highly recommend getting those 2 if you're are a sashimi lover. BC uni also never disappoints. Its super creamy and pairs with the seaweed and rice especially well. You can order the a la carte fish as sashimi or nigiri so you can choose which option you prefer for each type of fish. The anago don was amazing as the eel is completely different from the regular unagi don. Anago is a conger eel and the texture is super soft. There's a light layer of sauce and some sansho peppers in the don. I haven't had such amazing quality fish in a while and everything tasted amazing. The only complaint I have is that the fish is sometimes served not as cold as it should've been. But overall, all the sashimi is super fresh and our server was very experience recommending which type of fish to get and was very patient with us. Overall, I highly recommend Kiu if you're looking for a place for date night or even just a regular night. read more

This is my first time going back to Kiu since shut down dine in.  My expectation is high because it was really good before.  Things changed after I had my dinner tonight.  It is not bad but with comparison, it is definitely going a bit down hill. Ordered the bake oyster, eel rice, sashimi platter, striploin steak cube and custard pudding.  The bake oyster taste is good, but the size is small.  Sashimi is fresh and thick cut, but not really worth the price point.  Eel rice is really dry with almost no sauce.  The most surprise entree of the night is the medium rare steak on sizzling plate.  Japanese custard pudding is a nice touch at the end of the dinner.  If you would ask me if I will come back, I would not at this moment, but maybe in a few months down the road, I might! read more

Had lunch today around noon time and it was not busy at all. The restaurant was very spacious and had a lot of natural light coming in through the windows. We ordered two appetizers: takoyaki (a bit doughy and not memorable) and chicken karaage. The karaage was not too oily and the chicken inside was very juicy. The portion for the karaage could have been a little bit bigger. I ordered the chirashi and the fish was very fresh and flavourful. There was a good variety of different fish as well. I liked how it was topped with a nice serving of ikura. All the lunch specials came with miso soup and salad (ginger dressing). The tonkatsu was not bad. They had the mini mortar and pestle thing to grind up sesame seeds. The pork itself was quite flat and not as juicy as some other places that specialize in just tonkatsu. The unagi hitsumabushi was pretty delicious. Very generous amount of grilled eel over a bed of shredded egg and rice. It came with a dashi broth that can be poured over the rice to create a new way of eating the dish. The dashi broth itself was very nice and rich in bonito flavour. Service 4/5: The staff were very attentive but the kitchen prep could have been done better. My salad came without dressing but our server noticed and got me a replacement dressing on the side right away. Overall, I probably would not be begging to come back here again. It was good but nothing to write home about. However, it is a decent option for a Japanese meal during lunch hours if you are in the area catching a movie. read more
