On Sunday, I got together with two friends for lunch at Hana Don. Markham has a location that I have yet to visit. My friends come to this one at CF Fairview Mall often and recommended that we come here. I booked a reservation for three at 12:30 pm online. It was easy. I drove over to this mall, which has changed a lot. There are more eateries that face Sheppard Avenue East and are connected to the mall, but you don't have direct access to it. The Moxie's is still there. I didn't recognize the others. Parking was challenging. This mall was busy. I ended up finding a spot close to the former Hudson's Bay store. I then walked over. I entered the eatery and a man greeted me. I let him know that I had a reservation under my name. He found it and guided me to a table in the corner of the eatery. My friend walked in and saw me through the window. They came over and we chatted while figuring out what we wanted to eat. We got these items: - Chicken katsu udon - Yuzu matcha soda (me) - Sirloin set (me) - Chicken teriyaki set - Dynamite roll One of my friends had udon for the first time. It was in broth. The chicken katsu came on a separate plate. I had a piece and it was tasty. She loved her meal. The udon was chewy. It looked good. My other friend was recovering from a cold, so we kept things safe by not sharing anything with him. He got the chicken teriyaki set and ate everything up. He ordered a dynamite roll and we had his California roll that came with his meal. I was pleased that his appetite was in good shape. She and I shared the California roll. It was delicious. It had imitation crab and avocado. This place was generous with ingredients in this roll. It was fresh and satisfying. I got the yuzu matcha soda. It was heavenly. I stirred it up before I drank it. It had the perfect balance of citrusy, sweet yuzu with good matcha and fizz. So refreshing! I loved my sirloin set. The sirloin steak don was exceptionally filling. The steak morsels were flavourful and perfectly cooked. It came with a lot of rice that was perfectly steamed. This set came with sashimi mori. I loved the salmon, but the smoked fish wasn't the best. The veggie tempura was excellent. The eggplant, sweet potato, and squash weren't greasy. They were crispy and yummy. The amazuzuke was excellent. I got white radish cubes that were pickled in what tasted like yuzu. Each cube cleansed my palate. I need to make some at home! The miso soup was excellent. I loved the cubed tofu. The salad was okay. The dressing tasted bland compared to everything else. It needed more miso or something. The sets were a great deal. The quality was superb. They are available every day between 11 am and 4 pm. We were too stuffed to get any dessert. The ube tiramisu intrigued me. I'll need to find room to enjoy it next time. It was busy here. The downside was that we had to flag our server to get more water and the bill. Otherwise, everything that we consumed was yummy. I paid with a credit card. I tipped and was done. Yay! I used the washroom before we left. The women's washroom was clean. No issues. This eatery is a great place to catch up with friends over delicious food. I've been to Hanadon multiple times - including their downtown location and they are quite consistent in terms of food and service. We're quickly greeted and seated at our table. They gave us some tea to start. We tried their aburi don and Nagoya don. These also come with miso soup which was a nice start. Had lunch at Hana Don in Fairview Mall with family. I went for the Toyosu Don, which came with sweet shrimp, salmon, white fish, scallop, and ikura on top of their premium sushi rice. The seafood was nicely arranged, and the rice itself was well done with that slightly warm and seasoned touch that works perfectly with the toppings. In hindsight, I should've gone with the large. But that's just me, I eat a lot. I think most people would be satisfied with the regular portion. The overall quality was definitely on the good side, though a part of me felt it could have been just a notch better. Still, no complaints really. The space itself is well put together. Not overly fancy but thoughtfully laid out. It felt comfortable and clean, and worked well for a relaxed family meal. Service was okay. Nothing to really complain about, but it wasn't the kind of attentive service you'd hope for when you're paying a premium for simple, clean food like this. Portion was good with lots of rice, a ring of thinly slice sou vide beef and an onsen egg. Unfortunately the best thing was the egg. The beef flavour was ok but lacked deep meat flavour and had a very odd texture to it - almost crumbly. My friend had the Hokkaido Don, which she found had less uni than advertised but she enjoyed the overall bowl. Therefore it seems raw food here is better than cooked food. We came back to this spot in Fairview Mall. Today was not such a great experience. A couple of things - they have changed the menu and they removed some things that were really quite good on it, including what used to be a shrimp appetizer in a spicy sauce. It's no longer on the menu. They do have a much broader option of choices for appetizers. So I suppose that's good - it was just a shame to see that one item that we like so much gone. The other thing was that the waitress made a terrible mistake with our order. She got the edamame appetizer, OK, and then we ordered two Tonkatsu but only brought one to the table. I mean ... seriously!!??? She came to the table with 1 tray and we are like where is the other? She gave us a somewhat blank look and then I said we ordered 2. Ie we each wanted this. It seemed to take a bit to get through to her what the mistake was; finally she got it, and then leisurely walked back to punch in the correction. I insisted my husband take it and so he ate his but basically he was done his meal before our mine even came to the table. The other part that was incredibly disappointing was that the restaurant didn't offer any kind of adjustment for the error, especially since we took the mistake without making a big fuss. Finally got to try Hana Don myself after hearing mixed reviews from everyone. I got the Deluxe Bara Don and my boyfriend got the Gyudon. The Deluxe Bara Don was fresh and delicious I was stuffed after finishing it! The only thing I wish was that there could be a little bit more uni. I didn't try the Gyudon but my boyfriend enjoyed it. There was a good amount of beef and rice, the dish was piping hot when it came out and he said it was very filling. The servers there were very nice and attentive. Hana Don is a chain restaurant that serves Japanese cuisine. Mainly rice dishes. I got to try the Gyu Don which is beef and rice and thought it to be just okay. In comparison to other places, I find that this was more on the pricey side, along with their appetizers. They did have rice and sushi specials which were really good deal, and I believe 50% off their beer during weekdays. Our waiter was very attentive and and prompt. The portion for the rice dish was pretty good. This place is located along Fairview Mall so parking can be tricky. I would go again if I were in the area, but I don't think it's a spot I'll go out of my way to try. read more

I'm bias because I love anything and everything toro so I thought it was really good and fresh! It's chopped toro (tuna) on top of a bed of sushi rice. Rice texture was perfect and had a slight vinegar seasoning to it. Toro was fresh and complimented the rice well. Soy sauce on the side for you to add based on your taste/ salt level you like. I don't think words alone can describe how much I love this place! Maybe the fact I went 3x in the same week will display how much I love their food & service. I've gone with a couple different friends and we've tried various items, all were delicious and presented exquisitely. I was not a fan of the cheese stuffed chicken and personally found it a bit bland for my taste, my picky eater friend did enjoy it. Seating is not the most comfortable but tables are spaced nicely, and the entire restaurant is bright and clean. They have a roll up wall which opens to a small patio in the front. It wasn't open the times I was there. Ample parking, although it's mall parking so if you go early you may need to circle for a spot. Great portion size for the entree's, and they're very filling. However, the Tempura seems a bit costly and they could add a bit of salad with it or a few extra pieces of yam to offset the cost. I've been here three times now. Twice with hubby & once with a friend. Food has been delicious every time we go here. When you walk in the door (enter from outside of the mall) the chefs & waitstaff are usually at the front to greet you. They are always smiling & friendly when I've come here. They have art hanging from the ceiling. There are some nice light fixtures at the front of the restaurant & the walls are pained a deep blue. The price for the torched sushi is about the same as other places. I tried a piece of hubby's chicken & it was crispy & tasty. Second time I came here with my friend I had the Gyu Don & she had the chicken katsu set. We shared some gyoza. The Gyu Don is very good. The beef is tasty & the rice was seasoned well. I just wished the beef was cut up into smaller pieces as it was in long strings. They gave me a big spoon (more like a soup spoon) to eat with & it was hard to eat the beef. Next time I have the Gyu Don I will ask for a knife to cut the beef. Third time I came here hubby & I went again. He had the Haddock set & I had the Sirloin beef Don. The Sirloin beef is cut into cubes so its much easier to eat. But the rice wasn't as yummy as the Gyu Don. I tried a piece of hubby's haddock & it was good. Cooked fresh & the fish tasted fresh & good quality. The service has always been good every time I come to this restaurant. The food is cooked & served quickly. Each dish has come to the table hot if it's meant to be hot. The restaurant hasn't been that busy when we come but maybe that's because we usually come not at the peak hours. This Fairview Mall location is Hana Don's newest location, with their grand opening just a few months ago. They have both indoor and outdoor patio seatings. The don selection here is excellent. There are regular and premium dons, with all kinds of seafood and vegetables. You can also create your own customized don by selecting from a list of different ingredients. I ordered the Veggie Don, which contained an assortment of vegetables including okra, shiitake mushrooms, cucumber, cherry tomatoes, white radish, avocado, tofu skin (the type used to make inari sushi), and tamago egg. You can make it vegan by ommitting the piece of tamago egg. I added on seared salmon on top of the Veggie Don, which came in 3 thick slices of seared salmon and a bit of red fish roe. My friends ordered the Nagoya Don (chopped toro and seared salmon) and Gyu Don, where you can add the optional melted cheese. We also had a Gold Dragon Roll to share. The sushi roll was good, but it was the dons that stood out more. All dons came with premium Japanese rice and bowl of miso soup. The rice was "premium Japanese" indeed! It was high quality rice. All the ingredients were also high quality, including the fresh vegetables and fish / seafood. Fifty percent off the Lobster Boom Don (B03) (regularly $55 for a 1.5 lb fresh lobster) for the grand opening caught our attention. The promotion runs for one week but we arrived four days into the promotion and were told that the lobster dons had all been reserved and there weren't any more for the rest of the week. That was disappointing but we decided to stay and try other dishes. We ordered the Large Premium Hana Don (B02), Soft Shell Crab Don (A08), and Ikayaki (Y13) (grilled whole squid with sweet soy). The green tea we were given was extremely hot. Just FYI that the little mugs are very hot to the touch. Another reviewer mentioned that their tea was never refilled but for us a server came by unprompted to refill tea for whomever needed it. The ikayaki arrived to the table first. I loved how the cherry tomato and lemon wedge were presented on the plate, so cute. The squid was cooked so well. It was still a bit tender and not chewy at all. The sweet soy sauce tasted like teriyaki sauce to me. The only thing was that the squid was not fully cut all the way through so many of the pieces were attached to others. The soft shell crab don is listed on the menu as having two pieces. The waitress explained to me that it means the whole crab was cut into two pieces and not that you only get two pieces haha. A couple of discrepancies with the photo in the menu and what was actually presented -- there didn't seem to be any sauce on the crab on the menu but it came with sauce drizzled all over it and I wasn't a fan of the sauce and there was quite a bit of it. On the menu there was a small piece of tamagoyaki stamped with Hana and flower on it but that didn't translate to the dish I received. In my opinion, there's a lot of rice with the don and we ended up packing up leftovers since we couldn't finish it. The large premium hana don had an assortment of seafood with an abalone in half of its shell. From what I could tell there weren't many duplicates of the seafood in the bowl and my dining companion enjoyed the don. I noticed an interesting thing on the menus. For the lunch donburi menu (available 11:30 am to 3:00 pm) the Chicken Karaage Don (L24) is $14.95 and is served with miso soup or pop. This same dish (A20) in the menu in the binder is $15 and is served with miso soup. I suppose it's better to get it at lunch for five cents less and with a choice of either miso soup or pop. read more

The service was great and a nice location to visit if you fancy shopping before or after at Fairview. The fish was fresh but the flavours were somewhat bland. There is a wide variety of rice bowls and you can even build your own. Their prices are a little bit high for what it is but given the freshness, it's overall a good experience. In general, I would say there are numerous other Japanese restaurants which do sushi and other dishes better but this is an decent experience for dons. read more

Love coming here for dons! Our favourite is the trio toro don (bluefin fatty tuna, medium fatty tuna and chopped fatty tuna) and the Hokkaido don (scallop, ikura and uni). The fish is super fresh and high quality. And the ride itself is exactly how it should be for a restaurant that specializes in dons- it's the perfect texture and flavour to complement the fish!! So many choices! I love that they had two full pages with gorgeous pictures of all the different donburi bowls that they had. They truly had something to satisfy every palate. They had elaborate fish bowls, a gyudon for those who aren't in raw stuff, and even a veggie only bowl! The Bara Don looked so good with all the different colours and assortment of fish. I couldn't pass of the promise of seared fish so I did the customer favourite Aburi Don. I thought everything from the fish to the rice was delicious. My boyfriend got the Gyu Don and I couldn't resist how good it smelled so we swapped bowls for a bit. The beef is sous vide and incredibly tender and a perfect medium rare. The sauce was also savory and very hearty - perfect for a freezing day in Toronto. The servers were frequently coming back to refill tea and check on us. The inside has a nice interior. I went to wash my hand and the toilet had neon lights and the lid opened up automatically. Only thing missing was a bidet. Other than that, the restaurant has a good size and plenty of seats. One downside would be the location, Kennedy Rd gets extremely busy during rush hour. As for the food, the broth was watery. I'm used to thicker broth for my ramen. The noodles were also not ramen, it wasn't yellow. More like egg noodles. The sushi quality is average.... I've had worse. Another thing to mention is they didn't give plates. The other good thing about this place is the service. The staff is very quick and helpful. Overall, it's good to finally cross this off my list. read more

The rice bowl was presented nice and the food is really fresh. We ordered the aburi bowl and another bowl with shrimp. Both are really good and the shrimp was exceptional! Super fresh and sweet. The service was good and food came out really fast during weekday lunch time. The only thing is that the bowl has way more rice than the seafood. read more

The restaurant was clean and nice. The staff was somewhat friendly. There was a Weekday Economic Combo menu available for dine in and cash. If you pay cash, there was a 5% discount on everything else. The portion size was ridiculously small. The mixed tempura came with two shrimps: one was half batter and the other was 3/4 batter. The filling in the rolls were 1/3 cucumber. Presentation of the bowls were nice, I guess that's how they've been luring people in. The rice bowls were small bowls, the food on the menu was definitely not worth the price. The only thing that I think was worth going for is the daily dine-in special that was cash only. Overall, would not by back for more. It really feels like another social media hyped up place. read more

Decided to return now that indoor dining is allowed again, and thought it'd be a great spot to treat the in-laws, who were craving sushi/sashimi. The place itself isn't visually impressive. It was brightly lit and kind of looked like your average sushi restaurant. However, that belies the quality of food and services we received. We received a spicy octopus amuse-bouche before we even placed our order, and that was a great first impression - however, our server informed us this is only an occasional thing. We ordered 3 different donburis - the trio toro don, large hana don, and premium bara don. All 3 came with miso soup - which was nice but nothing too special. For the donburis, the rice was again seasoned quite nicely with the sweetness from the vinegar being more subtle. The seafood was fresh and the toro melted in my mouth as expected. The house soy sauce was also quite nice, not too salty also with a subtle sweetness. The prices are intimidating, but if there's a place that does these donburis for much cheaper, I'd love to know about it! The service was friendly and attentive - our cups of tea were rarely empty. It seems they are still waiting on their liquor license, so they weren't serving alcohol yet - something to keep in mind if you're planning to come in early 2022. It did feel like the orders took a bit of time to come out, and the first donburi came out maybe 10-15 minutes earlier than the last one did. It wasn't very busy so I would worry about the wait during a dinner rush. Either way, happy I got to try other donburis here earlier than I expected.
