We love the food, decoration and the service here, although the price is not cheap, each don is around $30, they have complimentary miso soup and recently they have more set meal on the menu, making the value higher. We ordered the set meal with salmon/avocdo and bara don with steamed egg (it is soooo yummy), must try. The eel don is really tasty too. The service is prompt and nothing to complain about. The environment is elegant and welcoming. We love to come back more often.
We came back to Hana Don recently and wasn't disappointed! We ordered their Sakura Set, which came with a special don, miso soup, roasted rice cakes and their daily dessert, we chose the cheesecake for this. We also ordered their prime rib katsu, creamy salmon roll and takayoki. I loved the donburi that came with the special set, the flavour profile of all the seafood was perfectly balanced. The rice cake was super chewy and the roasted salmon that accompanied it was delicious. The cheesecake was also great as it wasnt heavy and not too sweet. I always order takayoki when going to a Japanese resto and really liked the takayoki here. Finally, the prime rib katsu was done perfectly to our request. We always like dining at Hana Don as the space is nice and the servers are always very friendly. Would recommend for anyone who likes donburi!
Not all Japanese restaurants offer uni, but Hanadon does. I ordered the Hakaido dinner set that includes scallops, uni, and ikura - all my favourites. It comes with a bowl of soup. The seafood items were nice and fresh. But the bowl wasn't particularly large. For $45, I feel they could have offered more items.
Hana Don has 3 different locations in the GTA. The menus are very similar across all 3 locations. They serve a variety of dons (rice bowls) with fresh and premium ingredients, including uni (sea urchin), abalone, saltwater eel, octopus, Hokkaido sea scallops, to name a few. The signature and premium dons are certainly worth it - very fresh and great mix of ingredients. I love that they add little bits of cucumber and tamago in every don. Unatama Don (grilled freshwater eel and tamago on rice) is one of my favourite items here. House Salad comes in a pretty big portion, but it's mostly just iceberg lettuce (with a few slices of cucumber, cherry tomatoes, and avocado on top). All the donburis come with miso soup. Their miso soup is actually decent - has a little bit tofu and seaweed in it, unlike in many other Japanese / sushi restaurants where the miso soup is just broth.
This is the place where I will go when I'm craving for sashimi during work day! Lunch set was several dollars cheaper then the regular menu and everything is made freshly ! Nice staff and spacious seat :)
Service was quick and friendly. Food was good. They have dons starting from $18 up to $50+ depending on what you get. A good place for a meal. I suggest the dons over the katsu, the breading wasn't crispy, a bit soggy. This location doesn't serve ice cream like the fairview mall location.
I found my experience at Hana Don quite underwhelming. The rice and breading of the tonkatsu were way too soggy for my liking, and the set was pricey as well. I guess I might have ordered the wrong thing on the menu since Hana Don may specialize in seafood don...as the name suggests, but still. I'm not very motivated to come back

They do have an extensive menu so look carefully on the menu. If you love sushi rolls, don't miss out on this place, everything is fresh. Get there early so it won't be as crowded and your rolls will get done quickly.
Last minute reservation on Christmas Day and while they were 80% full, seating was provided quickly. Service was quick and very attentive, 5+ stars for their attentiveness. The food was pretty good, though no "wow" factor here. Some thoughts: the wagyu gunkan sushi was really good but OMG so oily. The chutoro sushi had too much ligaments that ruined the otherwise very fresh taste. Chicken karrage is as good as they come - juicy and not overly oily. The gyoza was a meh, the wine tofu was bland though the sauce is very good - if it was cooked for another 5 minutes or the tofu was thinner the broth would have permeated into the tofu. The grilled sea bass was VERY good , highly recommend to anyone who likes grilled fish.
Came here for lunch on a Monday afternoon. Learned they offer some amazing and well priced lunch specials and bento boxes on weekdays ( price range from $15 - $22). I got to try the Salmon bento box along with the pork tonkastu rice set. The bento box came with 6 pieces of California roll ( very fresh with soft rice) with two pieces of salmon teriyaki - salmon was perfectly cooked while I enjoyed the homemade teriyaki sauce. The pork katsu was hot and crispy yet still maintaining the softness of the pork meat. Overall, the restaurant had good Japanese decor with very quick and friendly service. I know they are also known for their donburi so will come back to try that next time!

It was served with uni and caviar, which made it flavorful, though I didn't expect it to be spicy and had to remove the wasabi paste. The main dish was a seafood rice bowl with tea you pour into it--very soothing after the raw appetizers and quite filling; we couldn't finish it between the two of us. Would recommend it for a nice lunch spot!
We went to Hana don for a celebration dinner. The dining room is on the small side but we'll laid out. We were greeted promptly and our very helpful sever went over the lobster spécial and other promotions that were happening. We opted to try out their dons first since it was our first time there. We each ordered different dons to try and ordered chawanmushi, tako wasa and à gold dragon roll to share. Food cane out relatively quickly and most of the dishes were good. My daughter didn't love her build your own don as she said her salmon tasted off. At a fist glance, the dons looked small but as we dug into our bowls, we were pretty surprised at how filling the bowls were. My husband and I both enjoyed our Nagoya don and the large premium hana don. The don was well prepared with fresh fish and Shari that was on a less vinegary side which I liked. We may come back to try other menu items if we're in the area.
The ingredients used in the Bara Don is very fresh with no fishy taste at all. The combo comes with a seafood steam egg and a miso soup for just $29. I think you can't beat that. The Tonkatsu is very crispy with a little fat which enhances the flavour. The pork is thick but yet not dry. The combo comes with rice, miso soup and a salad for $26. I think it's a good deal. Service is good, seating area and table are very clean. read more
Hana Don has always been my top 3 Japanese picks in York Region. Their food is always consistent and affordable (based on quality and quantity). We got the large premium hana don and pork katsu udon. We love their sashimi selection because it's so unique compared to other japanese restaurants. Everything was so fresh and tasty. For the udon, it's the same katsu you would normally get when served with rice, so definitely worth trying if you are craving something soupy! Since I went during lunar new year, they gave some coupons for next dine in experiences. One per table/per visit/cash only valid till April 1st. 5% off if you pay with cash. Service is great and the restaurant is never too loud (unless it's full house). read more

Friday is our usual dine out night. We read some good reviews about Hana Don, so made a visit here. Restaurant decor is not particularly Japanese but was pleasant overall, server confirmed food ingredients are imported from Japan despite Fukushima's discharge of radiation water into the sea. We ordered fried oyster, Gyu Don, Unatama Don and Bara Don and were served with free miso soup. Overall food qualities were satisfactory, but mindful that the Bara Don contained some small fish bones which are dangerous to swallow, the raw fish should be properly deboned before serving to customers. The sauce for the Unatama Don was a bit overdone and was too thick and sweet. Overall price is on the high side, we paid together with tax and tips about $105 for the dinner. We don't mind to visit the place again once in a while. read more

If you've never had a donburi, Hana Don is the place to try them out! Excellent quality and attentive service. My girlfriend and I love coming to Hana Don as a treat/celebration for ourselves. First and foremost, Hana Don offers Japanese cuisine including iconic appetizers (e.g. miso soup, chawanmushi, tako wasabi, tempura, edamame, gyoza) as well as nigiri, rolls, and sashimi. But the thing to look out for at this restaurant is their wide variety of different sushi 'dons'. For those unfamiliar, Japanese donburis are large bowls of rice accompanied with an assortment of toppings which could be cooked (i.e. Gyudon, Katsudon, Oyakodon), or raw fish. Hana Don is known for the latter. Every time I've been here, I'm amazed at the freshness and diversity of seafood in the bowls. My favourite is the Large Premium Hana Don. It comes with an assortment of fresh seafood (e.g. abalone, fatty tuna, scallop, hamachi, kinmedai, uni, ikura, shrimp). I may be biased, but I've found the scallop, uni, and shrimp to be my favourites time and time again. Each type of seafood offers a different texture and flavour, making each spoonful a delightful surprise. The dons come with a healthy mound of wasabi and ginger, which I highly recommend eating alongside the don to help cut the richness of the fish. A couple of honourable mentions include the Trio Toro Don and the Toyosu Don. Again, we love coming back and trying different dons offered by the restaurant. Feel free to drizzle soy sauce directly onto the don or pour it into a separate dish - the choice is yours! If you're looking to go, Hana Don offers the option to reserve a table in advance. FYI - the restaurant has high tables, dining tables, or sushi counter seatings to accommodate for everyone's needs. Service is always impeccable, with waiters coming around and refilling tea by themselves. They're extremely attentive, which helps make the dining experience much more enjoyable instead of waving down a waiter for more drinks. Although the prices aren't the cheapest, the quality and service more than make up for it. If you like fresh raw fish, give Hana Don a try! read more
I love the Don bowls especially the Angus Burger Steak and the Char Siu Don. Steak was so juicy and tender while the Char Siu just melted in my mouth. The Scallop Carpaccio has a flavorful taste and is so saucy to my liking. The Pearl and Hana rolls were so beautifully plated and delicious! read more
Came here on a Sunday evening for dinner and couldn't help but noticed some of the cute decor when we stepped in. We were seated quickly and service was good. The server took our order pretty quickly and food arrived shortly after we placed our order. We ordered the Chicken Katsu Udon, Sous Vide Beef Don, Spicy Salmon Roll, Avocado Roll, and Yam Tempura Roll. Everything was good and the proportion of the sushi was great too. Sashimi was fresh and high quality. We also ordered the Salmon Avocado Don as take out before and it was really good and fresh! One things I'd like to mention is that their avocado was always perfect in terms of ripeness and I wouldn't spot any brown spots! Would definitely come back but it is on the pricier side. read more
We came here for a celebration, we had approx 13 people and they put the tables together for us to fit . It is not recommended to have a large party as you will not be able to chat with eachother sitting in the booth with tables together. The prices were not cheap , the presentation was very nice, however the flavors and taste was just ok. My 13 year old loves sashimi and she ordered the charashi don and commented the food was just ok. She felt that the salmon didn't have too much taste, which I agreed with her. Finally got around to trying this place. Immediate impression is wow this place is decorated nicely. Great vibe inside and was promptly seated by the window. Ordered the Unagi Don (17.95) and 2 Roll Set of spider roll and spicy salmon roll (14.95). Both items come with either miso soup or a pop. The unagi don was very very very good. Grilled nicely with those little char marks and wasn't overdone on the sauce. Sometimes the sauce that comes with unagi is super heavy but not this one, a good mix of being thick and kind of sticking to the unagi and rice while also being not too too heavy. Rice was really nice too. The rolls on the other hand, were kind of mid. Was expecting a lot more but it just tasted like any other rolls I've had. Nothing special, bit disappointed. Go for the dons, not the rolls! Pretty good though, would return since its around the area and offers different selection compared to places like Donburi or Kome Shokudo. read more
This Japanese restaurant is located in a quiet strip mall and doesn't look like much from the outside. However, it is beautifully decorated with Japanese touches everywhere, open spacious dining area and great service. They specialize in Dons, so different ingredients over a bowl of rice but also have tonkatsu, sushi and other menu items. I had the Yamaimo Seafood Don, which had tuna, salmon, squid and quail egg with mountain yam sauce on sushi rice. It came picture perfect and artistically arranged, like in the menu picture. They are generous with the ingredients which are obviously high quality and very fresh. Cost is higher at around $25 a bowl, but you definitely get your money's worth. read more

Ambience is nice. Good decor. Table would space out a little more as I feel like I am sharing the table with the table next to me and hearing their whole conservation. (Which I prefer not.) Service is prompt and friendly. Food is yummy and nicely presented. Portion is quite small though. For the lunch rice bowl which costs over $20, I (female) still feel hungry after having it. We spent like $80 for our lunch and both myself and my husband were still not full. My husband had to go buy a Big Mac meal set afterward to fill his tummy. Overall, it is nice restaurant with yummy food. But you either need to have a small appetite or you have a deep pocket. read more

This place has a luxury vibe to it. I ordered from here for take out twice and twice for indoor dining. I really enjoyed it all those times. The salmon was so delicious and tasted so fresh. It didn't smell fishy or anything in that way. The avocado was green and fresh too. Always perfect! The rice is sushi rice with mushrooms inside, that is the best part. I never had a don that had something else inside. So unique and just memorable. Their prices are slightly on the higher rate, but it truly compliments the presentation, service, venue and food itself. The staff are so polite and respectful. They are prompt and kind. I would go here again and again. I've already brought two of my friends here. More to come! read more
This review is an average of a few visits. The first time we had takeout and the food was quite good. We came back when things started opening back up and it was quiet. The service was quick and the food was good. We had the katsu pork and it was quite good. The sushi platter was nice too and the kids loved the avocado rolls. This most recent time, it was a bit busier though when we got there it was at about 1/2 capacity. We tried a few rice bowls which were delicious, but the regular avocado rolls and tempura rolls were with rock hard avocados which really made them hard to eat since they should have a creamy texture. Basically the shrimp tempura roll just wasn't right without the avocado. Why 3 stars you ask? Well, all the other times I would have given probably 4/5 as the food was good. This time disregarding the avocados (because maybe they just weren't ripened yet) I would've still given a 4... but THEY ALLOWED A DOG into the dining room. That's a health and safety matter. This wasn't a service dog. It was a lady with the dog IN HER ARMS. I'm sorry, but that should not be allowed. If customers want to enjoy their meal with their furry family, then find a patio or order takeout. With that, it really dropped tonight's rating to 0 stars because if they break that rule who knows what's going on behind the scene read more

The donburis are still fantastic but the sashimi platter....overpriced for the selection and amount that's given. Quality of the fish is very good but it's not greater than some other places I've tried. read more
Hana Don sells a huge variety of sushi by the piece, including katsuo a.k.a. bonito or skipjack tuna ($4 per piece), which isn't a popular item elsewhere. There's something about the meaty textured fish with the light smoke ring that makes for an interesting bite. At Hana Don it was a little fishier tasting than pieces I've had previously, but it also didn't arrive with a glaze brushed onto the fish - the slightly sweet and salty barrier that balances the bonito flavours. They did try to temper the stronger fish with chopped scallions, it was nonetheless a decent bite to start off the meal. What you'll find missing from this post is a review of donburi, the focus of Hana Don's menu. Sadly, it's not a dish I enjoy. Don't worry, these are described and reviewed ad nauseum on Yelp and Google so think of this post as helping you decide what other dishes to add on. The grilled black cod with sakiyo sauce ($16) was delicious - the flesh moist and flaky and the skin perfectly crisped. The thicker pieces helped to create a meaty tender portion and I liked that it was cut in two to make it easier to share. The sake miso sauce was nice and light without that blast of sweetness that can sometimes make it taste like you're eating black cod with honey. Finishing the dish was a tube of pickled ginger, that I almost mistook as a straw, and was great for cleansing the palette. If you're hungry, go for the beef sukiyaki ($45) a huge pot filled with beef, mushrooms (meaty fresh shiitake, prince oyster mushrooms, and enoki), vegetables (bok choy, napa cabbage, and alfalfa sprouts), grilled tofu, and noodles. While the beef looks really marbled, once it's cooked through it tastes lean and a bit tough so it's best to eat the slices quickly. You round out the pot by cracking raw eggs into the sukiyaki broth and blending to create a slightly sweet egg drop soup. In retrospect, this was way too much food for two of us, so we left with full bellies and a doggy bag. They tried to warn us, but it's such a good addition for a cold winter's night. We might have been able to finish everything if we skipped the momo aburi oshizushi ($18) as there were a lot of pieces and each a fair size. Sandwiched between the sticky rice was a creamy tube of avocado and it's all topped with salmon and a reserved portion of kewpie, which I preferred as when there's too much mayo the rice becomes oily and heavy. An ingenious addition was the finely chopped cucumber and mango salsa garnish adding a lovely crunch and freshness to something that could be too heavy. read more
This was our first visit at Hana Don. We went there for Valentine's Day lunch The service is amazing and the restaurant is very clean with very nice aesthetics. We order a few lunch specials such as chicken cheese katsu, 3 rolls (Alaska Roll, Spicy Salmon roll and Spider roll). We also ordered the salmon donburi. The prices for lunch were on average about $15 before taxes. The food was fresh and tasted good. We will definitely be back to try other dishes read more

Premium Bara don: 10/10 It's was delish! Tho if you're not a fan of fishy taste, you shouldn't order this. The fish roe pops in your mouth leaving a fresh fishy flavour. The mix of sashimi was amazing, might I say best sashimi I tasted so far (bold statement). The little egg was a nice touch along with the cucumber to give texture to the dish leaving it much more interesting. Matcha cheesecake & Matcha ice cream: 8/10 It's good, definitely a good desserts to leave off with. Strong taste of matcha but not extremely overpowering. Visiting tons of bakeries in the GTA most Matcha dessert taste more sugary and sweet so the matcha flavour is quite drowned down. This one is a perfect ratio of flavour. Chicken karaage: 7.5/10 Not that crispy like other restaurant but still really juicy inside. Tho I don't recommend to order this as there are tons of other better things to order. Premium Hana don: 6/10 There was a huge ratio of rice to seafood which I didn't like. At first it looked like it was filled with huge selection of seafood but just underneath was tons of rice. The seafood itself was maybe worse quality then the Bara don. It wasn't tasting so fresh. Takoyaki: 9/10 The squid or octopus was so chewy and delicious, the sauce that was coated was absolutely amazing. The batter was very crispy too. It's not one of there most ordered appetizers surprisingly. I could eat more and more of these and never get tired. The dons here are fantastic, fresh, and look as instagram worthy as the menu photos. I can never remember the name of what I got but the fish selection was delicious and I felt the cuts were generous. A little detail I like is that rice is not only flavoured but also has mushroom bits in it for an extra tasty mouthful. Service is really nice but can be slow during peak periods. We came on a Tuesday night and they were still really busy, so call ahead and reserve if you can especially if you have a large group. I like the decor here and it feels really comfy. This Japanese spot is know for their seafood donburi bowls, but also serve other items as well. We visited on a weekday for dinner, and it was actually quite busy. We would recommend calling ahead for a table/reservation. The menu is quite large, however they didn't have everything available such as their more "special rolls" and hot dishes. We ordered: 1. Premium Bara Don This dish was a chef choice having bit of everything - uni, toro, octopus, salmon, ikura, etc. We found the fish fresh and the egg a complimenting touch. 2. Chicken Katsu Set with Cheese Crispy and filling. This deep fried dish was paired with a matcha and house Katsu sauce alongside a bowl of rice, and mashed potatoes. Definitely super filling and enjoyed the cheese. 3. Aburi Sushi Platter Lightly seared aburi sushi. We didn't find anything special about this dish. This dish was what you'd expect. 4. Salmon Salsa This dish had a twist, paired with a mango salsa and Thai spicy sauce. We didn't find it too spicy, and enjoyed the hint of sweetness. 5. Mackerel Typical and expected from any grilled mackerel. Overall, this restaurant is mediocre in food and a bit lacking in service. I'd recommend this restaurant if you want some higher end Japanese sushi north of Toronto (North of Hwy 7). Chose this restaurant over a typical Japanese restaurants because of how colourful the food looked in photos, and it seemed to have unique menu items. We ordered the yuzu mackerel as an appetizer and two bowls. I apologize in advance because I don't remember the names of the bowls and will simply describe them. One was with salmon, octopus or squid with a quail egg on top of a generous bed of Japanese rice (This one was savoury and left me feelimg fresh). The other was a rice bowl with premium cuts of fish that were lightly torched (This one has sweeter notes that complimented the smokey taste of the cooked edges of the sashimi). Overall, this restaurant was lovely. From the friendly staff, to the fun decor, to the higher quality cuts of sashimi, everything made for a very nice dining experience. **Tip: Make reservations if you want to dine here on the weekends** read more
