Kitchen No.1 - Orange chicken $10 - New American Near Me - Upper Marlboro, Maryland

Kitchen NO 1 has been in the strip mall location for a very long time. It is my main chinese food take-out place, and they actually deliver to a larger area than many delivery restaurants in the area, which is great if i actually want my food delivered to my house which is 10-15 minutes away. Now saying this, Kitchen No 1 isn't the restaurant it was a long time ago. It is in an area that doesn't get a huge amount of business, so i'm guessing it hasn't grown considerably over time. The food also is hit and miss. I have eaten there soooo many times over the years that I know what to get and what not to get for my money. Like many local chinese food places, the prices listed are never what you wind up paying, i don't know how that works out but i think many people learn to live with it. Usually the counter staff are well versed in English, usually the children or workers of parents who might not speak English well so there isn't any language problems. Now to the food. Again, you usually have to eat there a few times to start deciding what food you like and don't like, portions, etc. The fried rice I do not like. It isn't the fluffy vegetable fried rice that you often get in chinese restaurants, this is heavier, more sauce, large cuts of onions (i hate onions in my fried rice), and i call it the "dark underbelly" of fried rice. Also many dishes that come mixed with vegetables always seem to be heavy on the vegetables and light on the meat, and often the quality changes from week to week. Maybe different suppliers? As to the food I often order and love. The General Tso chicken is my favorite. Plenty of chicken, heavy General Tso sauce that actually appeals to me, and.. just chicken and lots of it. The Kung Pao dishes are nice also, lots of vegetables but plenty of fixins and good sauce. I often fall back on the Broccoli dishes like Shrimp/chicken/beef and broccoli, a fresh batch of Broccoli and enough meat to satisfy. Some of the other meat dishes fall into the "too many vegetables not enough meat" department to save costs of course. So i don't want to play such prices for mixed vegetables which cost must less than the filler meats. Overall the food is a bit higher than i would like, some dishes aren't worth the price, but they have always been nice and polite, deliver to a large area (i tip well since i live a bit away), and other than the fried rice, i like their dishes and sauces. read more

Ordered Orange Chicken last night. Way too many overcooked crispy droppings with NO meat inside. Sauce was too sweet with very little spicy heat flavor. They get a 'meh' rating from our family. I've been going to this place since 2014. Here and there the customer service is satisfactory and there's times it's piss poor. The service has never been above satisfactory OR Excellent. But last nights visit confirmed this business is below standard. The food is good, but comes with a price of rude customer service and respect. THEY speak to US any kind of way without remorse or tact. We're giving hard earned dollars and yet, THEY treat US like we're the problem. If you don't mind being spoken to like you're less than, Support Kitchen 1, but I refuse to give another dollar OR refer friends and family to spend their money for just decent Chinese food. I've been coming here for years. I love it. The foods great I order before hand and the foods always ready on time. They changed everything a couple months ago but foods always stayed the same. When I order delivery the most they've taken was 10 after estimated delivery time but Understand that if you want something on time get your lazy ass up and get it yourself. I would give them ZERO stars if I could. I had 5 orders. FIVE. EVERY single order had chicken in it, and the chicken had a rubbery taste and feeling. Specifically the sesame chicken had a syrupy after taste. All noodles tasted watered down. The lady who answered said, they boil their chicken. I don't care how they cooked it, it taste like rubber. They wouldn't even send their driver to come back to get the food either. Um.. not in 2017. They can put my money BACK on my card. My car is in the shop which is why we ordered delivery. Even still, there is NO way they're putting ME to work for THEIR mistake of BADLY cooked food. I have been a customer at Kitchen No. 1 for years, being a resident of Upper Marlboro practically my entire life. The food that they serve now is no where near what it used to be. This past year in particular has gotten increasingly worse. I'm convinced that the Kung Pao Chicken is no longer chicken, even though that's what was ordered. There is no way. The wings have to had been sitting out , and were spoiled . They tasted horrible, and they usually are very fresh and good but this time was horrible and really made me reconsider not ever eating here again. WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER! I have been patronizing this place in Upper Marlboro, MD for 14 years because it's close, so I dealt with the irritating ways. Most of the food is good. However, there is one lady in there who acts like she's doing us a favor by LETTING US order from them. She's MEAN AND NASTY! Ordering over the phone with her is horrible. I spend many dollars when I order and every time I ask for duck sauce or any kind of sauce she throws it and gives two. I offer to BUY more, (which I feel I shouldn't have to considering the amount of money I spend), and she yells or ignores then concedes to sell the sauce ($1 for 10 packs, sometimes 50 cents for 4 packs), throwing them. Not the first time. I'm fed up now so needless to say I will not be going back there after all these years. She ought to be thankful that the restaurant is EVEN GETTING ORDERS DURING THIS TIME OF COVID!!! I have been ordering from here for awhile since moving to Upper Marlboro and I have also had food delivered. On one occasion I ordered wings and they were not cooked well. But I ate them anyway but I just did not go to the restaurant for awhile because of this. On 1/8/2018 I ordered wings and fried rice. I frequent there often and I have never ordered french fries with wings.When I got home I discovered they gave me french fries instead of fried rice. I called and told them and I told her I could not come back that night but I would be in tomorrow to talk to the manager. I ate the wings anyway although they were hard and the fries were burned and hard. I saved them to take back.The whole ordered did not appear to be freshly cooked. When I returned the next day to show them they started speaking in Chinese very loudly and refused to give me a complete new order. They only wanted to give me the rice. At that point what was I going to do with the rice? They were very rude and very disrespectful. All the while speaking in Chinese. Just the fact that they messed up the order they should have been willing to replace the complete order in good faith. I will never order from here again. The first time I ate the food anyway but this time I had to say something to them about the service. Isn't the customer suppose to be right? They messed up the order. My gas, my time, and my money. The customer service at this place is the worst and they nickle and dime you for everything they charge you for ketchup and hot sauce. They advertise Chicken wings and Mumbo sauce but then charge you 50 cents for it. This place is the worst they don't respect their customers. I asked for a few extra hot mustard's and she told me that the mustard was for egg roll who are you to tell me how I want to eat my chicken and then she tried to snatch my bag back to get the Mumbo sauce back. Ordered take out which in the past has never been disappointing but this time has proved to be my last. The food was horrible. Since when does Won Ton soup have oil floating around in the broth. Family Unfriendly! I was bewildered by my family's experience here. We arrived at 2:00 and had a waitress come by at 2:04. No problem. I don't expect immediate service. What shocked me was when I asked for my kids to get the free sodas that came with the lunch special, I was told, "lunch is over." We were a paying family of five in a restaurant with 2 other families there. I asked why would you haggle over a few minutes on a clock and sodas for the kids that literally cost pennies to serve? When deciding to leave after the rude waitress made it uncomfortable to even stay, well this is where it got interesting... She screamed, yes screamed at my family, including my 9 year old daughter, that "you have no service here. Never come back again. You are not welcome here." What?? Never even got to the food, but if you value the experience of bringing your family out for a dining experience and being treated like human beings, then I would go anywhere else. As it was, we went to A&W and were treated like royalty. Just nice to check our sanity and realize we weren't crazy and it wasn't us. Could not recommend this place less. read more

As so many others have mentioned, the quality of this restaurant is nowhere near the level that I grew to love. I've gone to Kitchen No. 1 for years, so long that I remember when there was not an expanded dining area. A few years ago the familiar older employees changed to a younger staff. With it, the prices went up and the quality and quantity went down. My favorite dishes--the Kung Pao Shrimp and Shrimp with Broccoli--used to be delicious. Now, the flavors are different and the dishes are 90% broccoli with a few shrimp hidden within. So you pay over $9 for a generous portion of veggies. So while I have been disappointed for a while, I had still patronized this location due to the closeness to my job and a hope that it would return to its former glory. A few months ago, a dine in experience left me so disappointed, I vowed to never step foot in to this place again, and I haven't. I was there with coworkers for the lunch buffet. While the pans were a little slow to be refilled, it was generally acceptable. As we were leaving, the table sitting right next to us had just sat down with their first plates from the buffet and started eating. The waiter came over and told them the buffet was closed and actually picked up their plates from the table with their food. The lady literally still had her fork in her hand. When those diners questioned why the buffet was closing around 50 minutes before the posted end time, the waiter said "there was not enough people in the restaurant to keep it going" and he would "bring them the menu to order from." My group left right about the time the diners were complaining that the lack of business on their part shouldn't hinder them. I stopped off at the counter and talked to the girl at the counter and told her I was surprised by this decision on their part and it was not great service. She just politely listened and told me they would be receiving menus to get fresh food. Well, that's nice and all, but that also implies that the food on the buffet isn't fresh and it also limits those diners to one specific entree (no buffet variety,) prevents them from an all you can eat lunch (as was advertised) and requires them to pay a higher set price than the buffet. As such, I have avoided this place and have found a few other Chinese and Asian alternatives that I find to be all around better. read more

If I could give negative stars, I would. Worst customer service experience. Ever. Second time my family ordered delivery and they forgot an item, again. They wanted to give store credit for the next time we ordered, but we wanted the item with our meal. First they tried to say that if I wanted it, I would have to come get it myself or just get store credit. When I insisted that they send the item they forgot, they then started to insist that they included the item. I had to argue with the manager! She refused to believe that they forgot to put the item in with our food! SHE YELLED AT ME OVER THE PHONE! My family and I were furious at the treatment, so we took all of the food back to the restaurant for a refund. They COUNTED and checked all of the food, and STILL charged us for an eggroll and some crab rangoons! There was no apology at all, and when I asked if they were just going to continue to ignore me asking for the owners phone number, the lady in the back looked me in the eye and said, "YES!" I DEMANDED the owners phone number and the manager (same lady who yelled at me on the phone) told me that she doesn't have the owners phone number. She had been there for 2 years and he had only shown up to his own restaurant one or two times. I have never had such horrible customer service. My friend and I decided to go here for lunch at 12:30 on a Monday. We ordered the buffet before looking at it and found it very disappointing. There were about 12 pans on the buffet but only 2 had been refilled with food. The white rice and the brown rice were both empty. I asked a total of 4 times for more rice and it still had not been filled when we left 45 min later. To top it off they got angry at us when we said we were not happy about the food or service. Food was greasy, and tasted horrible. Broccoli was flowering. Service was lousy. Waiters behind the counter do not give a dam about the customers. One was clipping her nails and the other was watching Korean TV ignoring us all. There was no care, no pride and the food left us sick. For the money, I expected more. The food was hit and miss. The orange chicken was great! But I didn't really care for the rest of our order. The chicken and broccoli was odd - the chicken had an odd texture - the meat wasn't firm at all for chicken, and the fried rice extremely soft. The noodles were good though! Not sure I would order from here again. Great that they deliver, but I'm thinking it might be worth the drive to my odd neighborhood to satisfy my Chinese food fix! After eating there several times, I finally saw a roach in my food. The worst ever. Please believe ratings when you are informed there are roaches in your food. This is not a clean place.
