The food would bring me back! Started off with some apps, the Pla Muk Tord (calamari) crispy with a great sauce. Kanom Jeeb (friend dumpling) the sauce made them better but it drenched up more of the oil than I would have liked. The thai tea was great but would have been even better with some boba! We had a guay tiew rad nha noodle with chicken, the gravy made it better. And I liked a gauy tiew pad kee mau noodle better though. For dessert we had the lychee creme brulee, a MUST have SOO good creamy not too sweet, great consistency with pieces of lychee. Fried banana rolls with green tea ice cream was overall too sweet, maybe due to the honey on the plate also, but not bad. Came here for dinner with the bestie and this place definitely exceeded my expectations. Checked in and got a free beer and the good food made the experience even better. We started off with the spring rolls as an appetizer and it complimented my Brooklyn Lager very well. For our entrees we ordered the Pan Woon Sen and Guay Tiew Kua Gai. Both were full of flavor and just the right amount of spice. For dessert we shared the Lychee Creme Brûlée, which was to die for especially the surprise chunks of Lychee we were not expecting. The dark lighting with candle tea lights on the table during the dinner time makes this spot a cute place to take a date too. The decor is really pretty as well. Stumbled upon this place by random search and was surprised to find that the ambience was suited for dates as well as casual get togethers (thought it was going to be a hole in the wall, but it wasn't). The restaurant was packed on a Saturday night, but we were still able to get seated within 10 mins of waiting. Servers were friendly and service was decent. No complaints. The main staples I tend to order at every Thai restaurant is the tom yum soup and the salads, which I started off with as appetizers. Both the shrimp tom yum soup and mango shrimp salad were tangy with a spicy kick to it. The spice level is not volcano status but rather a mild level (or at least ask for mild if you can't handle spicy) so do attempt to get this! It's good! The sour spice will awaken your palette and leave you craving for more. For entrees, we got the pork tenderloin dish and a duck leg noodle soup. The pork was not only flavorful but tender and juicy as well, and served with a side of sticky rice. The duck noodle soup was rich in broth while the duck leg was very fatty but also tender. We tried a *lot* of dishes at Kitchen 79, but two things really stood out to me: the curry puffs and the spicy pork knuckle. It was worth the visit just for those! We had a reservation for four, but my friend and I arrived an hour early, so naturally we got a head start on appetizers. We tried the aforementioned puffs, the spring rolls, the calamari, and the fried tofu. The others ranged from okay to good, but the puffs were the only thing we doubled up on after trying. There's not much to dislike about the dish! Later, once our other friends got there, we got entrees for ourselves. I went with the spicy pork knuckes, which advertises two different heat sources. They weren't lying: it's hot. The pork itself was tender with the right amount of chewiness, and our free check-in lychee mimosas helped offset the spice. The menu at Kitchen 79 is giant, and filled with items you won't find at your typical Thai restaurant. For that reason in itself I'd be happy to return, but it doesn't hurt to know I've got some curry puffs waiting for me as well. read more

Atmosphere: Dimly lit, cozy place with bar seats. Could hardly see what I was eating. The table I sat at was oddly large for 2 ppl. My sister couldn't hear me from the other side. Food: If a Thai place should get 1 think right, it should be the pad thai. It was sweet and had a fishy smell like the fish they use in Vietnamese food. So that was a turn off, I've had good pad thai before, this was not even close. The pad see ew was also overly sweet with the fish well. My sister got green curry noodles which was watered down, so the flavor was almost non existent. The noodles were extra skinny so there's not much chewing happening. We finished with lychee cream brûlée, which wasn't too bad, the best thing we had there. The lychee fruit is at the bottom of the dish and the cream is sitting on top of it. Plus, the customer service is excellent, and as you know, NYC is terrible in this department generally. The owner is super lovely and simply an amazing person. Found this place on Yelp randomly and was drawn in by the high reviews and close location so I decided to give this place a try. The Jackson heights and nearby Elmhurst area is flooded with Thai food, so there's a lot of competition in this cuisine in the area. However, I've tried Ayada Thai and SriPraPhai several times, unimpressed, I decided to give this place a shot. As others have said, this place feels much more upscale.. similar to a restaurant you'd find in the city.. but for much cheaper prices. The lighting inside is a little dark for my preference, but definitely enjoyable for a romantic date. I started off with a Thai tea.. because.. who goes to eat Thai food without enjoying a Thai tea on the side? (Did you really go to a Thai restaurant?) $3 is $.50-$1.00 more expensive than how much other places charge for Thai tea, but I assure you that the quality of this tea is one of the best in the area. The portions.. is.. fair, most of my cup was ice and nothing compares to the LARGE jug of Thai tea from Ayada Thai. We also had the calamari for appetizers which was underwhelming since the batter was not crispy.. it was actually quite soggy even though it was warm and evidently just came out of the kitchen. My go-to Thai cuisine, that I get at every restaurant without fail is Pad See Ew.. so I would say I am some type of Pad See Ew expert.. this, was done correctly. The noodles are soft but chewy, flavorful, not too oily, chicken was soft and not rubbery tasting.. and the portion was right. My friend had a curry option (I don't remember the name exactly) but he enjoyed it though it was not something he typically liked having (so that is a plus). Overall, I would love to come back. First : finding parking in this area is absolute *H E L L. You've been warned! Also, I believe the 7 train runs here so that's an option. The store front doesn't have a sign above, only a circle inside the window that says "79" so it may be hard to find for some and it's also located within the block and not on the main Ave. This restaurant is absolutely gorgeous, the pictures do make it seem bigger than it is. The minor details are simply exquisite and there's no doubt that a lot of time and money was spend on the decor. The seats are leather, the chandeliers are stunning and the overall layout of the restaurant is great! They made such good use of the limited space they do have. The bathroom is so cute. The waiters have denim aprons and the dishes are served in either square or oval shaped plates. The water is served in beer glasses and there is a full bar (with a check in offer). Upon arrival, (7:30pm-Saturday), my bff and I were greeted right away and seated. We opted for the love seat which I absolutely adored. A very unusual seating area which would be perfect for a couple/date night. The staff was very helpful with the questions I asked, kudOs. What we got for under $50: the menu has so many options, it was hard to choose a dish! Curry Puffs: delish Dumplings: moist, savory, mMmmMm My friend got some worth of pineapple and chicken dish with white rice from the "wok" section. It was perfectly sweet and yummy! I got the 1st option of fried rice (I forgot the name but it's the first one in that section). I opted for medium spicy and got it with shrimp. This was really flavorful. I felt as though the rice was a bit grainy and the portion was unusually small. Teatree Fried Ice cream: they do serve this with flames. Eh, it tasted smoky and burnt. I would rate Kitchen 79 four and a half stars. I stopped in for the lunch special which included an appetizer and main course for under $8.50. I started with the kanom jeeb. This dish was very similar to shumai without shrimp. For the main course, I ordered the Thai red curry with chicken. The flavorful profile was magnificent. Spiciness from the curry, sweetness from the coconut, a hint more of bitterness and sweetness from the basil, and earthiness from bamboo. All in all, it was a very well balanced dish. Food : - the Som Tum Poo Dong Salad (papaya salad with the salty crab ); the salad part was pretty flavorful and tasty. The salty crab didn't really add much to the experience and I could have gone without it, perhaps I did not eat the crab the right way. - the Larb Gai Larb Moo Salad; pretty good and flavorful, similar to the other nearby Thai restaurants. -Peek Gai Mak Khamin Tord (chicken wings); they had flavor combination of salty, savory and some slight sweetness. I've already been to a lot of the Thai restaurants in the area so thought I'd give this one a try. I tried: Tod mun goong (deep fried shrimp cakes): I prefer the non deep fried versions. There wasn't any Thai spices in this at all (usually for these cakes you get kaffir lime, red curry flavor...) so it was really just deep fried shrimp paste. Gauy tiew pad kee mau with crispy pork: this came out a bit cool (sitting in the kitchen a while?) and it was a mistake to order crispy pork because it tasted hard/stale and quite unpleasant Moo yang (grilled marinated pork with sticky rice): really nothing special and a tad too sweet. Kanom jeen numya phoo (crab curry with Thai pasta): this was the only good dish. We asked for spicy but it was not very spicy at all (lots of coconut milk). There were a lot of nice crab chunks and went well with the bean sprouts, Thai "pasta", basil, and pickled greens. Overall, there are much better Thai choices in the area. We got the Peek Gao Make Khamin (fried chicken wings), Larb salad a d Gaeng Massaman Curry. Everything was delicious, the Larb salad was on par with other Larb salad I have gotten at Thai restaurants on Woodside ave a few blocks away. The Thai ice tea and Thai coffee comes in big beer mugs. On my second visit after awhile, the staff was very accommodating to our large group on a Friday night. The food was still good. I like how their Thai/Green Iced tea is served in such large cups. However I do prefer the iced tea elsewhere (Dek Sen, Chao Thai). I was most excited to order the lychee creme brûlée as that was my ultimate memory from the previous visit. I was unfortunately disappointed when they just dropped the check on our table and didn't tell us the kitchen was closing. Normally the staff warns you in advance and asks if you'd like to order anything else, but they just said the kitchen was closed after we said we wanted to order dessert. I know the creme brulees are premade in advance. You just dust it in sugar and torch it. I'm a bit miffed by this since this was the only reason I came here but aside from this, everything else was still good. read more

I don't know if there was a change in management or staffing but I promise I will NEVER return here again. I went a couple of nights ago with my girlfriend and ONE friend. A party of 3 people. I was seated immediately no problem. My girlfriend ordered drunken noodles and wanted it spicy, our friend ordered her dish and wanted it mild. I had ordered drunken noodles as well with the understanding that noodles don't just come spicy, so I didn't give a heat preference. The plates come and my plate looks like a ton of spice was thrown on it as it looked like my girlfriends dish as well. The male waiter never said that the dish naturally comes spicy. I took a bite and my nose immediately started dripping from how hot the spices were. I called the waiter over and asked if it could be remade mild, he tells me I have to pay for a new dish, which I was fine with. He then takes my plate to the kitchen which now I don't know wtf you're doing to my food and comes out to argue with me that drunken noodles comes only spicy... wtf am I supposed to be stupid. Just don't add the spice. He continues to argue with me and I told him forget it, I'll just get pineapple rice instead. I know that doesn't come spicy. He took a while to bring my to go dish of the drunken noodles out and then I was served with my dish of pineapple rice. I noticed right away that the plate used for my pineapple rice was the same as the one used for the drunken noodles, you could see the sauce stains still on the plate.. then when I was given the bill for the meal a 18% tip was automatically added to the bill for a party of 3 people. She was very nice and helped us through our menu options. The coconut soups are delicious as well as the entrees. This time around, we ordered the crispy duck and steamed fish. The fish takes longer to make but it's worth waiting for. The food can get a bit spicy but the cooks can make it milder or even less spicy. The veg curry was good but not really memorable flavor-wise. Although we wanted mango (didn't have) sticky rice, we enjoyed coconut ice cream with sticky rice (with exception for whipped cream which tasted commercial).
