The food is pretty good. They have an expansive menu of deli items. So far I've only had their bresfast items. The veggie omlet is really good. The home fries are the bomb! I really do like Mrs Effie and crew. However, sometimes I feel that there is no consistency. Especially in the prices. I have never paid the same amount twice for the exact same thing. I don't know why the prices seem to fluctuate. The food here is ok but the location is very convenient if you work downtown. read more

Love their chicken salad sandwich on croissant, and their French fries are amazing! Always hot, crispy and one serving is more than enough for two people. Here's where the rating system kinda fails. In the entire continuum of restaurants, I give three stars...BUT in terms of just small local diners I would give four. The prices were reasonable ($11 for large omelet, hash brown, toast, coffee and a bottle of soda). And the food was VERY good. I had an omelet with gyro meat and feta --- yum! When I was living downtown, I would go to Kirbies 1-2 times a week. The main attraction for me was the french fries and it's seasoning. Always made fresh and sometimes (rarely) overcooked. Portions are good but price is a little inflated for the food. However it will always be dear to my heart because of the coma inducing french fries. read more

Like Koorosh said, Kirbie's is an awesome lunch time choice around the UMD med campus. They offer a large selection of sandwiches, subs, gyros, salads. You name it; they probably have it. The food portions are ginormous and very reasonably priced. You're pretty much guaranteed a food coma if you eat an entire lunch combo from here. They also have different lunch specials everyday. I tend to go for those because some of them come with the fries, which I can't resist. And if you're a breakfast sandwich person, they have the for less than $3! The business is family-owned and operated. Everyone who works there is super friendly. To avoid a really long wait, call your order in ahead of time, or go after 1pm. read more

The ambience is horrible and cafeteria style. I ordered the gyro the other reviewers recommended - it was disgusting. They used frozen pre-shaped flat sausages as the "gyro meat." The self-serve water they have was pink because it was mixed in with Hi-C (the fruit drink). Overall it was a revolting and overpriced experience. Lovely, family-owned coffee shop. It's a great spot for lunch or breakfast. They have all kinds of sandwiches, soups and salads. The service is fast and always comes with a smile. I've never had a disappointing experience here. I only wish they were open past 3pm on weekdays. read more

I was really surprised that this place was as packed as it was! Their food wasn't anything to write home about, but it was pretty decent and filling. I had the gyro, but I've definitely had better gyros from other places. I'll try another one of their menu items and compare and see if it's any better, maybe one of their specials or something. Good food, but staff made me feel like I made a mistake when picking up my food. I don't think it is good practice to blame a mistake from the kitchen on the customer. I was on my lunch break, and I went into Kirby's to order a sub and a salad. I was given a receipt with the ticket number of 80. I was told that when my number is called I can pick up my food and leave. When my number was called I picked up my bag with food in it and went back to my office which was many blocks away. went in the office, went to my desk and got the food out and it was missing the sub. OK, so they made a mistake and didn't get my sub in there. I went back to get the sub. Unfortunately, this place decided that it was my fault because when they call the number 80 I should have known that it comes from two different parts of their kitchen and they call 80 twice. Seems like a bad process, or at least one that should be explained when ordering. Or they just lied to make it seem like it wasn't their fault. Accountability helps you keep customers. this place is the best I have had for a small type restaurant..i have had several different items and all were superb and cooked the way I like it. the place is kept very clean for the traffic that they get daily..if u get there late for lunch expect a wait but it is worth it., the family who owns and runs this place are very sweet and really knows how to knock it out of the park. read more

if I could give negative 10 stars I would. I ordered a Flounder's Sub Special for $9.95. The sub was sloppy and soggy, the lettuce wilted, the fried onions were piled on the sub, weighing it down and making it impossible to eat. The hots were not spread evenly on the sub and appeared as if they were just thrown on--the sub went in the trash. When I called to complain, I was told by the owner to bring the "product back". When I explained to her that I would not be able to do that (lunch hour was over and I had thrown it away), she suggested I dig the sub from the trash and bring it back the following day! Really? Just so that you don't have to refund my money or provide a well-made sub? You are the epitome of poor business practice, and you suck in customer service. I will not be returning and will advise my colleagues not to service your establishment. read more

Food is okay at best. Management is horrible. As I approached the establishment a gentlemen was trying to get out the restaurant door with his walker. I opened the door for him and my friend went in to get her food. As I was standing outside waiting another woman in a power wheelchair rolled up and was trying to get in the restaurant. I opened the door for this woman, as soon as she went in my friend was coming out, so I continued to hold the door. As I let go of the door one of the managers came to the door and said for me to shut the door because I was letting all the cold air out. I was assisting his customers and all he is concerned about was the door being open for 30 seconds. As I got back to work I called the restaurant to ask for the manager's name. A woman answered and said she was one of the managers. I asked for the name of the male manager, she would not tell me. I explained the situation to her then again asked for his name, she refused to give it to me. If he did nothing wrong, why wouldn't she tell me his name? Long story short, the food is cheap in price, okay in quality, management sucks, establishment not handicap friendly and neither is management. They care more about their air conditioner than their customers. read more

Oh God. I actually forgot the name of this place and typed in google (for nastalgia's sake), greasy spoon, redwood st, baltimore... and it still exists! Kirbie's! I guess I am old cuz I got my lunch from here all the time.. back in the 70's and early 80's! That was back in the day when manufacturing still went on the the good old USA. There were tons of sewing factories around Kirbie's at that time (I worked in one). I remember their good food even to this day in 2016. My favorites were grilled cheese and tomato, and grilled ham & cheese. They were sooooo good and not cheap with any of the ingredients. Their fries were awesome too. Hopefully, it remained in the same family as when I used to go there almost every day. They were all so nice back then. If they are even half as good as they were long ago, they would still be twice as good as most places are now. this small sandwich/sub shop near the UMD med center is easily a diamond in the rough when it comes to baltimore's lunch joints. greek-family-owned so they make a lot of great Mediterranean food, but i'm continually suckered in by the awesome sandwiches and subs they make as well. reasonably priced specials and AMAZING french fries. best indicator that it's good is the line that stretches out the door at noon, every single weekday. read more
