The food was amazing. The service was good. I think they need a little bit more training, but they were kind and professional. There's still a little rough around the edges. The ambience was nice. The first and only time I've been to this restaurant was a horrible experience. The whole night was off. They were constantly out of things that you were asking for that were on the menu. The chef was having a bad night. The food was not worth the price. I ordered overpriced truffle fries and literally received crinkle cut fries with some type of truffle oil on them, which were totally different from another table, not far from mine who ordered the same thing and got a totally different style of fry. I don't understand how you serve two different types of fries for the same item on the menu. It was way overpriced for the experience received. They were using staff from upstairs at the bar and the night just was not great at all. Unfortunately, it did not impress the guests that were from out of town as well. I will say the interior design is very nice but for such a new restaurant I was very surprised at the experience. Inside an old mansion, Kinsmith is part of the Trilogy Hotel in downtown Montgomery. Staying at the hotel, it was easy for our group to meet here for breakfast. Here's our experience. 1) Food: For breakfast, the menu is diverse from French toast to shrimp and grits. Each of us ordered a different dish and none of us were wowed by it. The French toast was overcooked and just not tasty for being encrusted with corn flakes. The shrimp and grits were runny. The avocado toast used old guacamole. Nothing stood out. 2) Drinks: We stuck with coffee, which was average. Cream and sugar are available on the tables. 3) Service: This is where they win. Our server was delightful and efficient, especially for serving a larger group. 4) Space: Its beautiful- historic and full of local art. read more

Was in town visiting family and broke away for a breakfast to myself. You have to walk through the hotel to get here. The front desk staff and the hotel will guide you. I had the omelet and it was loaded. I enjoyed every bite. The cheese grits were ok. Coffee was good and hot. I'd come back. It's small and inviting. Definitely check it out and try it. It's a beautifully decorated restaurant that is located inside the historical Murphy House that was built in 1851. If anything, you really need to see what the Trilogy Hotel has done to revitalize this space. Everything about this place just lures you in with their grand foyer leading you to the staircase. There is a full bar area to the right at the entrance, and the actual restaurant is near the staircase to the left. I wouldn't have known it was there, if not for the banner hanging from the mansion. I did glance over the dinner menu the first time I visited. It's a varied mix of southern with a little creole, but at a gourmet level. I was only in Montgomery for a short period of time. All I could do was try it for breakfast. If you're staying in the hotel on the weekend, then you may want to try their brunch. The Oxtail Benedict definitely caught my eye. The breakfast menu is limited. It's a hotel restaurant, so keep that in mind. I initially wanted the Kinsmith Omelet that I've read about. They were out of the pimento cheese. I ended up getting the Steak and Eggs. Everything was cooked exactly the way I ordered it. The steak usually is the highlight, but it was the biscuits and housemade jams that were the star on this plate. I would have liked the steak more had it not been marinated. I think I wasn't in love with the red-eye gravy. Other than that, I was happy with the rest of it. It was a very well presented meal with a mushroom, onion, & spinach stir-fry, and fresh fruit. But those buttermilk biscuits with the strawberry jam that had a touch of mint & basil was what won me over. The service was good as well. I actually wish I had taken her recommendation to get the Alabama Breakfast (the most popular item) with the Conecuh sausage. That's what I'll get next time. I was also blown away by the fact that they gave me some samples of jams to take with me. That was so sweet! They were all great. They should sell & package all of the flavors for tourists like me. I think it's cool that Marriott has two hotels housed within 3 historical buildings. I stayed at the SpringHill Suites which is next door to the Trilogy. The Trilogy (Autograph Collection) is more of a boutique hotel, but both have great historical architecture features and charm. It's in a historical area with lots of appeal. The breakfast at Kinsmith was good for a sit down meal versus a basic self-serve hotel breakfast. It's good to have both options in a Marriott property. I'd definitely revisit Kinsmith on my next trip to Montgomery. read more

I really wanted to LOVE Kinsmith, but I just liked it. (Don't get me wrong. I'd definitely go back.) I am a very positive person so let's start there: Our server was amazing! Very attentive and pleasant, which I really appreciate! The decor and ambiance were wonderful. Beautifully decorated, nice setting, comfortable seating. Our drinks were delicious! Now, to the not so positive: I had a steak. It was not the best steak I've had for the price. Lacked flavor and simply wasn't the quality I was looking forward to. I asked for medium and it was cooked a bit more than I liked. We also got the Gulf Seafood Risotto. Looked lovely and tasted pretty good. It, too, lacked the flavor I was expecting. However, we enjoyed it much more than we did the steak. Again, I'd definitely try it again. There were some other menu options that I was interested in trying out. read more

We came for the hype and left disappointed. We love our brunch but beyond a cool historical building the food here is lackluster. Service was the lowest quality I experienced in Montgomery. The server simply wasn't interested in providing any service. My friend ordered steak medium with the creamy spinach topping. I ordered poached eggs and vegetable hash. They were out of the creamy spinach topping and didn't bother sharing that information (when we ordered) they brought the steak and the plate was full of blood, it hadn't rested enough and was undercooked. The server seemed taken aback when asked about it so she told the chef to come out who made a scene and didn't even bother apologizing or comping anything. He said he'd cook the steak more but at that point my friend lost her appetite. My breakfast was lukewarm and flavorless. Mind you this place isn't budget friendly and it certainly was not worth it. read more

Our group of 11 ate here. The service was good and the small space is pretty and comfortable. Our food was where we were disappointed. I had the crabmeat Caesar which was good but not great due to stale croutons. Others had the wedge and that had too much lettuce for the amount of dressing. Most of the diners had the seafood risotto and all did not eat their shrimp that were under cooked. One diner had the ribeye special and felt that it was somewhat bland. It was served on top of the mashed potatoes (how is one supposed to cut the steak without a mashed potato mess ). The duck was excellent. One person had a tasty piece of cheesecake. We had high hopes based on previous reviews but the food must improve if Kinsmith is to be a place I will return to frequently. read more

Kinsmith Restaurant in the Trilogy Hotel Montgomery. After seeing the photo spreads during their grand opening, but not hearing much talk locally about it, my wife and I decided to go see for ourselves. The hotel and restaurant are absolutely beautiful...so NOT what you would expect in the Gump. We went early tonight, 5:30 and left about 7:15 and we were the only ones there. But I understand there was a lot going on downtown tonight for competition. The dining room is not very large but very well appointed. Our server was most pleasant and informative. I made reservations for brunch this past Sunday for a party of eight. When we arrived there were about four people in the room we were scheduled to dine in. There appeared to be two servers. The brunch menu is pretty limited and overpriced for what it is and the quality. Service was slow and we didn't receive one smile the entire visit. Several items on the limited menu were out of stock and every person had complaints about some aspect of their meal. Soupy grits, bad mixed drinks, a steak that was supposed to be cooked medium but came out well done, eggs that were overcooked, pancakes that were rubbery, overcooked bacon, bad coffee-- you get the gist. We were excited to try a new place because of all the positive reviews but this was not a great experience. I can say that the decor and ambiance was pleasant but the food and service left a lot to be desired. We will not be going back here again. read more

The food is terrible. I ordered the steak medallions and eggs. I asked for very soft scrambled eggs, almost runny with cheddar cheese. The server brought out hard scrambled eggs and asked me to check to make sure they weren't too runny. I told her, then looking at them, they were too hard. She ignored me. Plus, the eggs were liquid eggs out of a carton. I could tell by the texture of the eggs. We asked for water with lots of lemon. She brought two lemon slices. Server was nice. Service was terrible. Food was terrible. But when you are waiting to be seated and no one is at the stand, what could we expect? I looked inside the kitchen and cleared my throat to get her attention. When asking her how she was doing, her response was, "I'm bored"! No wonder the place is empty. Don't eat there unless it's free. Even then, weigh your options! read more

I'm hesitant to give a negative review to a new restaurant. There are always a few yips that come up and need correction. I will probably wait a couple of months and try again. Positives: Atmosphere was nice. Salad and good and my filet was well prepared and really tender Negative: long wait for food. NO COFFEE! Valet service $15 + tip and 20 min wait for car. Did I mention NO COFFEE! What restaurant serves dessert with NO COFFEE! Apparently the owner owns the Starbucks downstairs and wants you to go downstairs, buy your coffee and bring it back to the restaurant to drink with your dessert. Also note that the Starbucks is closed so you can't get coffee even if you were willing to do that. Three tables cancelled our dessert because of that. So Mr Starbucks, please note! NO COFFEE is a definite no go! read more

We went Saturday and had horrible service. There were 9 of us and it took an hour for all our drinks to finally come out. Out of the 9 drinks ordered, only three were right. One person asked for sparkling water and the waitress didn't know what that was. Since it took so long for drinks we canceled and the dinner order and left. This place was amazing. Came for our anniversary on a Thursday night, reservations through OpenTable, mentioned it was for an anniversary. The staff went out of their way to make it a great dining experience! The executive chef came by our table several times to offer recommendations. When my wife said she was intolerant to some fish products, he altered a recepie to still get her the dish she wanted! The food was all fantastic - though be prepared for large serving sizes! Kinsmith is a very well decorated space. The other patrons were all talking and yet it wasnt loud. Their was ample space between our table and the others around us. We were immediately seated and attended too by the hostess and then our waitress. The primary issue was the food. The purpose of dinner was to celebrate my daughters completion of B school at Maxwell so I wanted to treat her on het next to last day. The bread & salad was definitely the best part of the meal. The hushpuppies were too big and were not crispy or savory. We ordered the seafood risotto and steak. The seafood dish was watery and poorly seasoned & although the steak was medium as we perfer the setup of hashbrown and veggies left much to be desired. We left very underwhelmed. read more

Came to Montgomery for a consulting job. Stay at the Trilogy hotel and found this jewel of a restaurant right inside. The very southern-French fusion cousins is excellent. Mykol, served me and we had a great conversation about wines. He is very friendly and has great knowledge of the ingredients in the recipes. One of the best restaurant's attendees I ever had. The place is very cozy and ideal for conversations. You don't feel in a very noisy place at all. Highly recommended. read more

This was our first trip to Montgomery and we were looking for a restaurant near our hotel. Kinsmith was a couple of doors away. There was no difficulty getting a table. The restaurant was nicely appointed and conducive to quiet conversation. The wine list was bizarre. There were two lists with different prices for the same wines, but that didn't matter because they did not have most of those wines anyway. Our server was not very knowledgeable about wines nor was the sommelier. They offered us a glass of wine from an open bottle of meritage which we tasted. It was oxidized--seems like they do not know how to properly store open wine. The glass we finally ordered was from an unopened bottle and was fine. The food was reasonably good. Salad was generous and tasty. We both ordered seafood risotto which was tasty as well. Waiter was attentive, Prices were steep, especially for mediocre wine. read more

Our first visit to Kinsmith and we had a wonderful experience. Our hostess, although somewhat new, was charming and helpful. The restaurant industry is short-staffed across the country for the last 3+ years so I appreciate staff in the hospitality profession. Mike, our server, is absolutely a pro...the #1 server in Montgomery...if not more. You wouldn't notice a short staffed busy Monday night because Mike served us and took care of all the guests like the seasoned professional he is. We enjoyed the brown butter shrimp small plate with our drinks and entrées of FarmersChicken and Jerk Spiced Crusted Pork Belly were both rich and delicious. Modernising an old antebellum home and incorporating into a boutique hotel provided a unique ambiance experience that one could only marvel at the effort and results of such an undertaking.
