Our experience here was extremely disappointing. We're a blended family, and the server treated us noticeably different from every other table -- speaking warmly to others but being curt and dismissive toward us. She threw our beverages and silverware onto the table and even set my husband's card down instead of handing it back when his hand was out. The food itself was mediocre at best -- bland and lacking any real flavor. We won't be returning. read more

This is my second Brunch stop since it began two weeks ago. The Brunch menu is a delightful assortment of omelets, breakfast sandwiches, pancakes anyway you could like them, as well as steak and eggs. Be sure to order the biscuits! They are brown, crunchy and everybit as good as Mama's. If you are out and about on Saturday morning, give Sommer's Place a try. It used to be fantastic. We went back this week and found it disappointing comparatively. They don't offer the 2 for one crab claw special anymore. Ordered an 8 oz prime rib. They said on Friday you must order the larger cut. Ordered rib combo and shrimp. They said there were no ribs. Ordered catfish. They said that catfish was not available on Friday night. All of these things were on the menu by the way. Had to order my 3rd choice - which is not what I came there for in the 1st place. Wait staff was great. Food we got was good. But what we got was not what came for and spent $92. read more

The decor may not be the best. But if you stop to look at the pictures around the walls, you get a good amount of history of the place that is interesting. The service is really good, and the food is always terrific. We are aware of some changes of being open, but we can work with it so long as they can stay open. This place probably has the best food and prices in Montgomery. Their workforce is made up of good considerate people. read more

Sommers place isn't a very memorable place for us, but the food wasn't bad. They have a very large menu and home cooked food with lots of sides. We would give this spot a three out of five. This is a Montgomery staple. It's a good place; always packed at lunch. I do feel like they can be inconsistent with the quality of food but when they get it right, it's really good. Very heavy food, though they do offer salads and such. Things can sometimes be way too salty or greasy. If you are a vegetarian, expect to only eat carbs like mashed potatoes and bread. I do wish they didn't cook all of their veggies with meat, but it's still good. The staff is usually very busy, so sometimes they can get a little stressed and come off as rude, which is understandable. It's a very unchanging place, the decor has mostly remained the same since opening, but it's a vibe. Give it a try! read more

It's our first time here and I have to say the food didn't let us down. First I was very happy with the 2 for 1 crab claws. It's been a long time since my husband and I have had crab claws so good. For our entree's I ordered the prime rib and shrimp and my husband got the ribeye. The prime rib was to die for. It was so moist and tender it practically melted in my mouth. My husband ribeye sadly wasn't as good. He said it was dry and he had to use extra steak sauce. If you get a chance I highly recommend the crab claws and prime rib. I can't rave enough. The atmosphere was pleasant. The service was slow. However they were quit busy and the waitress did seem to have her hands full. Overall; we will definitely come back and will recommend this place to a friend. read more

If you're looking for a good southern cooked meal, highly recommend. The food was just right and the service made me feel right at home. Janea our server greeted us with a big smile, was patient and thoughtful in her recommendations and made sure my mom and I felt welcome. Southern Hospitality at its best. Been here only twice. Once this evening and once a couple of years ago. Not impressed either time. Left the first time thinking the crab claws (their "special" I guess) were bland and over priced. My meal was terribly bland as well. My girlfriend wanted to go tonight, so I went. Tonight. Same thing. 1/2 pound of crab claws only had flavor after dunking then in cocktail sauce. For $24...those little claws should freakin' sing to me. My chicken, bacon Swiss sandwich only had taste because of the ranch dressing I poured over it. I went to Sommer's Place for the first and last time today. My mother raves about their French onion soup and blueberry crisp. After a brief wait, we're seated and provided menus. Our server comes by, doesn't greet us or introduce herself, only says,"What can I get you to drink?" She returns a few minutes later with our drinks and takes our order. I got French onion soup and a house salad. When she returned, my mother asked her for an order of blueberry and peach crisp. I did not see either on the menu (this will be important later). Throughout the experience, or server remained cold, but it was lunch, so I gave her grace as I waited tables for nearly a decade and I know how it goes. I finish my salad and soup, and move on to the peach crisp. One, nothing is crisp about it; call it what it is: cobbler. Second, it has walnuts. Having never been to this restaurant, and not looking at the dessert menu prior to ordering my lunch, I did not see the note several inches below it that said it contains walnuts. I bite into a nut, and immediately spit it into my napkin. I asked her when she walked by if they were walnuts, and stated that I have an allergy. Before she asked if I was okay or wanted anything else, she said,"it's right there on the menu." I apologized, having never been there, and she cut me off to say,"are you gonna be okay?" but not in a concerned manner at all. Before I could even say anything, she started listing other options for me, which I said the blueberry would be fine and moved on. A menu was still on our table, and I looked at it before she came back. Under the platters (meat and two or three) it's listed above the blueberry crisp, with an asterisk next to it, and two inches below it is the allergen warning. Considering I got soup and a salad, not a platter, and someone else ordered the cobbler for me, she could've handled it with half an ounce of compassion. We were pleasantly surprised to find this little, local joint. From the outside it looks like a sports bar, with the fluorescent signage and advertisements of specials. Once you're inside, you'll realize it is far from that at all. The menu consists of plenty of variety. Luckily, we were seated before 7pm and was able to order the 2 for 1 special for crab claws. I have never had fried crab claws and these were so good. So so good!! The rest of our meal was just as delicious. The wait staff was friendly. We visited Sommer's Place Friday night for the steak and lobster specials. It doesn't get better than this special. We each got the filet mignon and lobster tail. Salad and one side comes with. I ordered the blue cheese dressing -- if they don't make it in house, they have a great source. It was delicious with nice chunks of cheese. Our steaks were juicy and tender, and the lobster tails were cooked perfectly and served with drawn butter. I had a baked potato which was good, served with butter and sour cream on the said. My husband had fries which were very tasty and crisp and well seasoned. I shouldn't forget, each meal was only around $20. You may also get other combinations of steak and lobster or just steak or just lobster. This special is only on FRIDAY NIGHT. I highly recommend you try this place. read more

The menu is quite expansive, but since we were in the mood for seafood that's mainly what we ordered except for our daughter who had the spinach salad. Which to start with, they ran out of spinach and had to go to Winn Dixie to purchase more, causing our wait to be extended. The highlight of our visit was the fried salmon. I've had a hard time ordering this in most establishments, even to the point of having the chef in a very popular Charleston restaurant only make it for me out of curiosity. I've done it at home on multiple occasions and been very pleased; Sommer's was better than mine! The other foods; however, were not as good. The oysters and shrimp tasted as if they were fried in older oil. The crab claws did as well and were peculiarly small. The wait staff was about average. They seemed to be mainly teenagers-early 20s. All in all, even with the fried salmon being good. I'll probably not be back. I've experienced better in town and would most likely try and get one of those chefs to make the salmon for me. Honestly - we were not impressed at all. Very bland food! We ordered the baked ziti and it was pretty much all thrown together from a can or frozen bag. The sauce was runny and we would have rather eaten out of a Ragu or Prego jar. The sauce needed a lot more flavor! It's Italian!! Don't serve it if you can't cook it. The ziti pasta was bland too, the cheese was thrown on top of the sauce and it wasn't baked all together at all. It was horrible. On top of that, our high school waitress with tattooed hearts near the back of her ear was extremely fake and didn't wait on us until she felt the need to... It was a church night I guess because the place was packed and we were complete outsiders to the folks that all knew each other. The owners walked around the restaurant greeting everyone - well except us because we didn't belong in their little click. Overall, this place left a sour taste in our mouths. We think the only reason this place is still in business is because of the regulars that visit and want to come see a cartoon picture of themselves on the wall. Yes! They have caricature drawings of their friends on the wall using a blank sheet of 8.5 x 11 white paper. Very weird! Horrible decor in my opinion. One more thing- lots of old folks!!!!! We had a late start on a Sunday, so were trying to find a place that was still serving breakfast at 11ish. The first few places we drove by were closed so we ended up here. There were lots of cars, so we figured it was safe. Once inside I looked at the reviews here on Yelp and some of them were making me nervous. The overall feel is basic, simple and straightforward. A place were your parents would be equally comfortable eating. The comments about regulars is valid, as the wait staff seemed to stop at every other table and talk to someone. Most of the staff seemed to be in their early 20s. I ordered the chicken bacon swiss burger, and she order the pot roast. I think they both came in about 5 min(!) My burger was very good and her pot roast was even better; it just melt in your mouth. Service was friendly, and the place was not too noisy but definitely a family place with people of all ages. By the time we were leaving at 12:30ish, the church crowd was starting to arrive and there was a line up for seating. Very popular with lots of regulars and I'm sure we'll be back. read more

We had our Christmas Lunch ordered from Sommers Place. I think they gave us slop. We've had our office lunch from them for the past four years at least. I checked into this place by just driving by. From the outside, it looks comparatively small and deceptive. But once inside, the décor is nice and neat, with plants and pictures along the wall to give it a more decadent look. From the entrance, the bar is decent-sized and inviting, and off to the left and right, there are tables where you can be seated. The lighting is low, which is perfect for the right ambiance to bring a date for a romantic evening. Overall, the menu is diverse with a nice selection of appetizers, entrees' and other culinary delights. I opted for the Chipotle Shrimp, followed by the Ribeye with baked potato and salad. For drinks, it was a simple rum and coke. The appetizer was good, maybe a bit more coating of the chipotle sauce than I liked, but it was better than average. The steak - which was cooked to a perfect medium rare - was a bit on the gristly side. It was good, nonetheless, but the one main problem I had, is that it didn't have any seasoning whatsoever. It would have been nice, but one of the ongoing problems with other places is that they over season a steak and mask the true flavor of the meat. One dash of salt and pepper from the table and it was good to go. So, a mixed bag of sorts. The server was nice and polite and everything arrived when it needed, instead of throwing food on the table all at once, which I've had the displeasure of getting sometimes. The presentation was nicely done, although, for my preferences, I would have opted for maybe slightly bigger plates. The shrimp seemed to want to run away when I moved towards it with a fork. You know a place is struggling to get customers in when they have to resort to running specials on Facebook. I have been to Sommer's Place (and the now defunct Sommer's Grill). Sommer's Place, in my opinion, has gone downhill and the quality of the food is subpar. The food tastes bland, its always served a little below warm, and in my opinion is worse than Ryan's Buffet or Goldan Corral. The service is horrible, there seems to be a lot of turnover and the manager (middle aged guy) was extremely rude and tried to argue with my wife over the order she placed. I will say the beer was cold, so that was a good thing. They didnt have much of a selection and was out of what I wanted, so I had to choose a standard domestic brew. I doubt this place will be around in a few years, unless it changes drastically. I would encourage trying a real local venue where the food and service are much better. You can use this site to find some better options. read more
