Decent Chinese fare at inexpensive prices. I visited for the second time for a reunion dinner with some friends. We were seated immediately and ordered 4 dishes, beef wonton noodle soup, fish ball noodle soup, poached egg/beef rice casserole and dry sauté beef noodles. For drinks we had the iced milk tea and pomelo honey. All of the dishes were tasty and filling! My favorite dish had to be the dry sauté beef noodles, it was flavorful and had a generous amount of beef. Also I discovered they have a really good hot sauce mix on the table that paired well with all of my dishes! Our bill for 4 people came out to be less than $50 including tip! Came here for breakfast because I was in the mood for some congee. I'm still baffled how any Chinese place can mess up on congee but this place managed to do just that. I got the pork and preserved egg congee while my sister got the minced beef congee. Both were pretty bland and tasteless, to the point where you ask "what am I eating?" Two thumbs down. We also got a side of squid and roast duck. Both were way over salty. So now we're stuck with really salty and really bland. Maybe they thought we wanted to eat those things together? They have some dim sum (mostly steamed rice noodles), clay pot rice, and other Chinese foods like noodle soups and rice dishes, and unfortunately they're all quite mediocre. I think they spread themselves too thin with the variety, and need to focus on something unique that they can perfect. The steamed rice rolls are all made fresh to order but they're not exactly great. Stay away from the shredded duck in particular- they put lettuce in there, and if you've ever had STEAMED LETTUCE you will understand how gross that is. The wonton noodle soup is pretty decent however - and at around $5.50 for a huge bowl of noodles and wontons it's pretty nice. The wontons here are smaller than other places, but they give you more pieces so it balances it. The soup is nice, and the noodles are plentiful and not too soggy either. The clay pot rices I am not a fan of. They are largely flavorless, and the toppings are all piled on top, and not throughout the rice. It depends too much on the soy sauce for flavor, and it's overall quite mediocre. They forgot about my order of chicken wings which I am quite disappointed about. The iced milk tea has a nice strong tea flavor which I am a fan of. The milk tea comes from King's Kitchen next door and they have a connected kitchen I believe. I definitely wouldn't come out of my way for King's Kitchen, but if other restaurants have a long wait, this is a decent place for lunch. Special note - you can get the clay pot rice for take-out, in the clay pot! You just need to pay an extra $2 per dish/pot. Bring the pot back in a few days or whenever you're free, and bring the receipt to get your $2 back per clay pot returned. You should also call ahead because it does take 20-30 minutes to cook the rice. The rice is perfectly cooked with the right amount of crisp at the bottom. There is a good amount of preserved meat on top and a sweet soy sauce to pour over the rice. I've tried the following and recommend all of them! - Preserved meat - nice mix of Chinese sausage and cured pork belly - Pork knuckle - Salted fish with minced meat The barbecue meat they have in front are also delicious! Why the ratings for King's kitchen are so low astounds me. This is a modern chinese spot that does their meats so well that it's always sells out by 8pm (bad for me cause I can't get it). Their duck, cha siew, and chickens are so flavorful yet not too fatty which I love! They have other menu items like noodle in soups, clay pots (20 min prep time), dim sum plates like congee and churn fun, and unique dishes like the tangy jellyfish appetizer. I'm a regular at King's for one thing and one thing only: the trio meat over rice to go. Trio meat combo (6.50): You get to choose 3 from bbq pork, roast pork, spareribs, roast duck, and chicken. I've tried them all and my favorite combo is spareribs, duck, and chicken. I usually come here for dinner around 6pm and they often run out of items like the roast pork and the spareribs. The man behind the counter chops up your meats of choice, lays them over a bed of white rice with a side of cabbage, pours some sauce over everything, and has you on your way within 5 min. I really want to try their claypot rice but haven't had a chance to dine in yet. All the meats I've tried are delicious and it's great value for the cheap price. Their next door bakery is still under construction but the restaurant is very much in business. With a deep, dining room space, it is modern with clean lines. Table seating is fairly comfortable, and easily movable to accommodate groups of different sizes up to about 8 - 10. Straightforward service as expected of Chinese restaurants. For lunch and dinner, the thing to have are their rice casseroles. Similar to their other branches, these are very good ones, the rice fluffy with a nice crispy layer against the earthenware pot they are served in. Toppings are generous and not excessively oily or salty. Most choices seem to be good. These include tender frog, subtly flavored preserved vegetable and minced meat, meaty spare ribs and Chinese sausage, and eel. The casseroles are served in their pots if ordered for take out for an extra $1, refundable if returned. For breakfast, the rice rolls are the way to go. Freshly made to order, there's a huge variety. One of the best is the delicate rice roll with plenty of dried shrimp and scallions incorporated. The skin is thin and decently smooth. Others that are thicker are rolled around minced beef, shrimp, preserved vegetable and minced pork, roast pork, and thousand year egg and lettuce. Some are wrapped around their freshly fried and excellent fritters, while others are rolled and sliced, then topped with beef brisket (which was not so good). This is a great place that I'd recommend for rice in clay pots (casseroles)! They also have a good mix of congee, rice noodles and appetizers like chicken wings, roast pork , duck , chicken etc.. For those unafraid of clogging a few arteries, I would recommend the dong po meat. This delicious pot of pork fat literally melts in your mouth. We ordered three clay pots to share. The taro with preserved meat, the black truffle chicken , and the poached egg with beef. The taro and preserved meats ( Chinese sausage and bacon fat). This was really good especially with some soy sauce drizzled over it. Don't forget to scrape the crisped up rice off the sides and bottom of the pot! Heard abt this place and decided to try it. My sis had the singapore chow mei fun and i had the roasted duck thigh w roasted slice pork over rice. Their coffee and milk tea are both very good, im pretty picky when it comes to these drinks becos usually its too sweet or too light or not brewed well. The roasted meats were good but i felt the duck was alil skinny so not much meat to chew on. I tried my sister's mei fun and it was definitely good, very big portion. We also ordered some food to bring home, a clay pot rice w chinese sausage and more duck and pork lol. They give u the clay pot when u order to take out but the one we had was alittle beat up so we threw it out after finishing. My boyfriend & I have been here twice for take-out during lunch time. I've never been here during the week, but during lunch hours (12PM - 3PM) on the weekends it is crazy packed! I didn't know that there was additional floor for seating/customers, but the main dining area is quite cramped and small. The decor is a little bit nicer than your average Chinese restaurant and very warm and bright. My boyfriend and I have only had their clay pot rices (to go) and generally it has taken about 20-25 minutes for it to be ready. We usually leave our numbers with the women that work at the counter and they give us a buzz when it's done. I'm not sure what the policy is now, but they have given us the pots without an extra charge for it. Taro with preserved meat in rice casserole - Absolutely love this one in every way and it's also pretty cheap - about $6-$8 (I forgot the actual amount). It really smells amazing when you open the lid. It smells like meaty heaven. The meat is obviously quite delicious and yummy. I love eating the crusty parts of the rice and it tastes especially good with the fat and juices from the preserved meat. YUM! Salted Fish and Minced meat in rice casserole - My boyfriend usually gets this in the last two times we've been here. This clay pot rice is very good in terms of taste and quality too, but a little too much salted fish in my opinion. The rice isn't as crusty in this version. Sadly, we haven't tried any of the other rice casseroles or dishes, but everything sounds good and looks good. I think I would much prefer doing take-out from here because it doesn't look very comfortable to eat in the tight space of the restaurant. This place has the BEST rice casseroles! If you come on a regular weeknight - there is no wait at all but beware they do close earlier than their 8th Ave location (10:00 PM SHARP). My usual to go items are Spare Ribs w/ Black Bean Sauce Rice Casserole, Eel Casserole & their bitter melon veggie dish (it's not on the menu). Their rice casseroles are cooked within 15 mins of ordering! It comes out in a very hot clay pot so be careful! The best way to eat them is to pour some soy sauce over it and mix everything together. I have no complains whatsoever as they are super tasty and did I mention how inexpensive these are?? I also want to mention their cha siu and duck are BOMB but it's hard to get them since they always sell out by the end of the night! If you want to order a veggie dish here - ask them what's in season or what they have in the kitchen (everyday is different). If you order their rice casserole in a pot, it will take about 10-15 minutes for it to come out. Their steamed rice noodles are average as well - kind of bland. Their fried wonton was delicious, because fried items are always delicious. The jelly fish item was tasty - crunchy and full of flavors. I recently found out there are two floors at King's Kitchen. The first floor is always packed, and sometimes they open the 2nd floor. I prefer eating at the 2nd floor more because it was more spacious. Ok, let me just get this out of the way, the food here may possibly be better than the other two locations. I never had an issue with their food, nothing amazing. I ordered the wontons in soup this time, but honestly couldn't remember if they've always been so tiny; I don't like that it's not very authentic in terms of size/wonton skin to meat filling ratio. They're pretty good though. The seating and decor is exactly the same as the other locations, but this one feels a little less cramped. You don't expect good service regardless of which King's Kitchen location you go to, but everyone deserves decent service. It wasn't very busy and there were times where several waiters were just standing there. The entire time we were there, I only had one cup of tea and I left our empty cups on the side of the table so they could see it. We asked for the check, acknowledged and then ignored. We asked for it again and then took out money to pay it. We wait for a while and no waiter comes around so we thought we would bring it to the register to pay, apparently not an option. We have to wait for a waiter to do it! The waiters here are doing a terrible job and customers shouldn't have to wait on them. Please fix your system and train your wait staff. I've been to several of the King's chain of restaurants and was prepared to feast on their offerings. But they may have lost a return visit due to their lapse in service and compounding it by playing the "stupid" card. Here's the story- we ordered a clay pot rice dish and a chow fun. After an acceptable wait, the chow fun was served. When my 90-year-old mother was half way through the dish, I finally signaled a server and inquired about my dish. She came back with the clay pot and uttered an apology that no one saw that the dish was ready. The clay pot contents lacked the usual temperature from the high cooking heat. As busy as the kitchen was last night, they could have forgotten to time the dishes to be served together. But the cooling of the clay pot suggest otherwise. I called the waiter that was servicing our table to register my disappointment. After recounting the timeline, his response was that clay pots rice dishes take a while longer to prepare than the chow fun. When I told him that the server appeared with the clay pot instantly when reminded and that she apologized that no one grabbed it from the pick-up table, he said that it couldn't have happened that way and continued with the longer cooking time of the clay pot rice dishes. We were getting ready to pay our bill, so there was nothing to do but chalk it up as a "bad" day for all. What prompted this protracted review is the fact that the waiter would not entertain that possibility that they messed up and let the clay pot sit, unnoticed, at the pick-up station. The congee here is pretty good - it's super cheap and you get a huge portion (large container for $3). The pork + preserved egg is my favorite cause they use ground pork instead of huge pork slices like most other places. The rice crepes are also a very large portion. We are giving a one star for the poor experience this weekend. We called 15min ahead to order take out - fish congee, preserved meat rice casserole, wonton noodle, roast duck noodle and soy sauce fried noodle. When we arrived, we waited another five minutes and when the order was ready we found that they made the Singapore style curry mei fun instead of soy sauce fried noodle. In Chinese both noodle dishes sound nothing alike, how can they mess it up? I told the waitress that is not what I ordered and she still asked me if I wanted it. I told her I don't want it and she asked another waitress what she should do. Of course you should remove it if it wasn't the customer's mistake! She was instructed to take the noodle out of the order. She recalculated the price and asked me to pay, but then I asked what about my soy sauce fried noodle? She asked me back "you still want it?" So I end up having to place the order again and wait another 15-20min. We also ordered a pound of fat roast pork. The waitress picked out a piece and weighed it. I saw a big chunk of fat and it was too fat so I asked her to find another one that is not very fat. She then found another piece, weighed it, and placed it in the queue to be chopped. Before the guy chopped it, I asked him if it's a fat piece, he told me no and said it's a very skinny piece. He yelled at the waitress about it and changed a fatty piece for me. After our food would not come for about 35 minutes, and people that ordered after us got their food. They had the audacity to run after and said it was NYC law to pay up 15%. Food is on par with the other King's Kitchen over in Dyker Heights, 8th avenue, but for some odd reason, service just isn't good here. Couldn't find my go to waiter which probably affected the service a bit. Go to dishes is still the rice roll wit shumai and roast park. Yum yum yum. Also will get their duck noodle soup or congee (rice porridge) which is full of flavors. They have soy sauce on the side for you to add that extra kick whenever needed. I think the crowd here is more of a day crowd on the weekends but you will find less people in the evenings on the weekend. Dining in on the weekday nights may be a little of a wait, but I never found it to be too bad. Super tight seats so you are literally squeezing to get by. For anyone who is dining in stores, you are given a little coupon off your next meal (depending on what your spend is, which also includes a minimum spend on your next meal). I don't recommend sitting right in the front. They told us we can't sit in the back because it's for the kitchen to eat lunch. We ordered 4 soups. 2/4 of the soups were cold. Although the food is good. I don't recommend eating here but takeout is good. When a 6 group came in they seat them all the way in back, so why couldn't they seat us back there.
