Currently my favorite bar in the city. Great staff. Great beer/cider selection (all in cans). You can bring in food (it's a block from a Chipotle). Free popcorn. Great music playing (no live music). Great spot to drink and catch up with someone. The two tops have hooks under the table AND outlets below them. Only two tv's and they're always playing movies/shows instead of sports. (I've seen Stars Wars, Son-in-law, X-files, Start Trek TNG). Great happy hour deals. They've got Geeks who Drink trivia (haven't been yet). Easy to get to and easy jumping off spot, if you choose. This place checks off all the boxes. I wish the jukebox worked, but then again people tend to have terrible selection in music, so I'm fine having the bar stay in control of that. read more

I love a good divey bar and Kingfisher certainly fits the bill. It's really easy to miss as Kingfisher just blends into the background on 14th Street but just follow the popcorn smell and you will have no problem finding it. The beer can list is long and craft-oriented and they even have sparkling wine in a can too. They had on zombie-beavers (one of the greatest-worst movies ever on Netflix) during the visit too. Staff was friendly enough and it was never really crowded even later on at night. Highly recommend stopping in if you're looking for a more unpretentious spot for a drink. read more

This is one of my favorite bars in D.C. -- especially for happy hour, which runs until 8 p.m.! That's an hour later than most places on 14th Street. Important stuff. But it's also a great bar. You may not even notice the place from the street; there's a small entry way directly to the left of the liquor store. Once downstairs you'll find it's super clean, offers free popcorn and lots of games, allows you to bring in whatever food you want, usually plays something interesting on the TV (last couple visits: Lethal Weapon, Star Trek TNG, Alien, Happy Gilmore), and features probably the coolest staff at any bar in D.C. It's got a nice vibe. Worth noting: it's in a basement, so no outdoor seating. But, AC. read more

A new local fave. Unpretentious, comfortable basement bar with a staff that is perfect all week long. In a bar where most everything (even the wine) comes in a can, the cocktails are generous and sneakily excellent. The Campfire old fashioned is a personal favorite, but their whole cocktail list is great. Trivia on Tuesday nights is by Geeks Who Drink, a nice change from the local District Trivia monopoly. Was walking down 14th street one night when I stumbled upon a new bar called Kingfisher. My initial reaction, as I'm sure is most people's, was, "Nyomygod, is this a bar based on the classic 1991 Robin Williams and Jeff Bridges comedy-drama film, The Fisher King?" I was disappointed but, sadly, not surprised to learn that no, of course it is not. Having said that, they were showing Free Willy on the TV, so maybe it wasn't such a crazy thought after all. I know, I know, Free Willy is an American treasure and can't really be put in the same realm, let alone conversation, as The Fisher King, which is arguably one of the worst Robin Williams movies of all time (slightly worse than Jack but slightly better than RV). However, they're both early '90s so in that way they are related. Aaaaaanyway, it was a Thursday night and I was on a first date. Not the most conventional place for a first date, I'll admit, but it worked because the drinks are good and it was relatively quiet as the bar is still new. This place is basically a dive bar but with bartenders who are knowledgeable and capable of making fancy drinks. Additionally, there's free popcorn! That's right, there's popcorn and they'll just give it to you. No money required in the transaction. All you have to do is ask and you get all the popcorn your stomach can handle which, for me, is a shit ton of popcorn. It's arguably the greatest thing that the Native Americans have ever done...as opposed to inventing lacrosse which is irrefutably the worst thing that they've ever done. So to summarize the good things: Good drinks at reasonable prices. Free popcorn! On 14th street but not overrun with awful people who like to spill their drinks on you while they grind on other awful people (I'm looking at you upstairs at Provision). Oh and did I mention there's a jukebox? Because there is...although it's not quite functional yet...but they said it will be soon (sorry to put you on such a roller coaster of emotions there). In the meantime, the music is provided by the bartender's ipod which plays a lot of 1960s and sometimes 1990s. Perfect. My one complaint is that when I ordered my date's drink--a grapefruit-flavored Hefeweizen--the bartender should have warned me that it's not really an alcoholic drink (2.5% ABV). I mean, it's a first date, we're nervous--we're going to need alcohol. More importantly, she's going to need alcohol as I had already made a very unsuccessful Fisher King reference earlier in the date. Which is on me. I mean, that was truly a high risk/low reward reference to go with. I can see that now. Luckily, and this is 100% true, later in the night when I made a The Cutting Edge reference, we had already switched to alcoholic drinks. She did not get that reference either; however, because of the magic of alcohol, it was ok. Also, that's a much more solid reference--one that you can be proud to bring home to mom and dad. Anyway, the date went great (despite my compulsion to make early '90s movie references). The bartenders were super friendly. The popcorn was delicious. And I got to watch Free Willy on mute for an hour. That's just a solid Thursday night. Can't wait to go back and take the jukebox out for a test drive! Let's just hope they have "The Best of Smash Mouth" on it because I'm going play the F- out of Walking on the Sun. read more

This bar is EXACTLY what Logan Circle needed! Not pretentious, laid back, cool vibe, cheap(ish) beers and wines. This is the place you wanna go to when you can't handle the crowds and/or the bridge and tunnel scene at most of the other 14th street spots. Legit no idea what was here before, but they did a beautiful renovation. Lots of open space, cute tables, fun movies on the projector, and super friendly staff. Ill definitely be back! Good spot for happy hour. Decently priced drinks, patient staff, cool interior, however it can get busy during peak times (especially on fridays/in summer) so try arriving early or visiting with a smaller group. Went in on a Saturday night shortly after they opened and they were playing a sweet Gorillaz album and had Austin Powers on the TVs...groovy baby! Overall a solid little basement bar on 14th st. There aren't too many frills, but it does the trick for a casual night out. You can also ask for literally as many bowls of popcorn as you want and they will keep refilling them, and they have old bay seasoning to top it off with! read more

It doesn't get any more "basement bar" than this! Kids of the 80s and 90s will love this place as they play cult classics on the TV, you can play trivial pursuit or other popular board game with your table buddies and you can munch on popcorn with all sorts of seasonings. It's dark and cozy and friendly and definitely no frills- just like your basement at home. I would recommend this spot for beer and other canned drinks rather than cocktails (unless you're looking for a simple well drink). So nice we went twice! Ended up here during our D.C. trip for Geeks Who Drink trivia night. Enjoyed it so much we came again two nights later for late night fun. Huge beer selection, all in cans (with koozies). Loved that they had some sours available; I'm a fan of Goses and sometimes struggle to find them in bars in my city, Boston. Free popcorn to munch on while you drink, clean bathrooms, bag hooks under the tables, board games, friendly bartenders. We also loved trivia night! The host was entertaining and the free beer for bonus question winners is a nice touch. read more

Look, if you're going into this bar thinking it's going to be like every other spot on 14th Street, I would keep on walking. BUT, this is one of my favorite, lesser-known spots in DC that has a great, relaxed atmosphere and is just a good place for an after-work drink or catch up with old friends that won't break the bank (a rarity now in the 14th Street corridor). They aren't pretentious in what they're serving -- only food they serve is popcorn, but you can BYOF, and they only serve canned beers/wines/ciders in addition to liquor -- but you get a free koozie with your first drink, they have games and trivia nights on a weekly basis, and they are always playing old/obscure Netflix movies that can bring back memories or be a good way to break the ice if you're on a date. It's a dive, but in the best way possible. read more

Strong, reasonably priced cocktails that are actually really tasty. They have a good beer selection too. We came here as a pregame before going out and I had a good time. I came in from Baltimore and I have to say, this is an awesome D.C. bar. I walked in and they had Forrest Gump on one TV and Gladiator on another. I turn to my right and there is a bookcase of board games. Chess, checkers, battleship, chutes and ladders, monopoly, Trivial pursuit. Then they have a mixed drink called "The Littlefinger" (Game of Thrones reference) with his picture on the bar wall next to the drink description. I go to sit down to find out it's Bingo Night and there's free popcorn to be had. I mean what more can people ask for, this place gets it. They have a wide selection of beer (light, mediums, and darks) that all come in cans which is cool. They don't serve food but allow you to deliver food to the bar. 5 stars for this joint. read more

If you are looking for your own Cheers in DC, look no further. The staff is friendly and provides excellent service. A great, vast selection of beer which they serve in cans (so you can remember what you are drinking). It's a cozy dive in the best way. Overall laid-back vibe, lots of games to play and they always playing culturally-relevant movies. They have trivia and bingo nights. Not the kind of bar where you pay $18 for an artisanal cocktail to brush elbows with a K Street bigwig. They have been super accommodating with orders during COVID restrictions. Okay, are you guys kidding me? I added a star because the staff is GREAT and the free popcorn and seasonings is cool. I can't really get down on this idea that it's a cool unpretentious neighborhood bar or divey bar because hey cool look it's in a basement and the beer is in cans because it's SO DAMN EXPENSIVE. $5 for a Narragansett -- a TWELVE OUNCE. I didn't know 'gansett came in non-tallboys until I paid $5 here. Hot ciders were $12. Plenty of local beers in cans ($6-8). I love the place, but if I'm looking for a divey bar, I'm hard pressed to pay $5 for a Narragansett here instead of $2.50 PBR or Natty Boh at Desperado's. read more

Came here a couple weekends ago with several friends and we were enjoying our night playing board games and drinking our canned wines/beers until my friend was confronted by the bartender for not tipping enough. Whether the service is good or not, people may have their own circumstances or reasons for tipping amounts. Please don't approach your customers and act entitled to a certain percentage of tip. read more

So I was in the neighborhood and decided to stop somewhere new for a beer before heading home and I'm SO glad I ran into here! Although there are no drafts, there's an extensive bottles/cans list with some pretty awesome beer & a shot combos. The bartenders(Sam and Jay)were also very attentive and sucked me into TWO more rounds with some tasty canned wines! Which wasn't too bad considering they also serve free popcorn, with a toppings basket?! I'll definitely be coming back for some post-work drinks! read more

I honestly cannot think of something that would make this place better. In fact, it's everything that it's missing -- pushy crowds, fancy fingerfoods, standard pop music, a pretentious atmosphere, overstuffed leather booths -- that I love about it. Make no mistake, this is not your average 14th Street bar (THANK GOD). Don't get me wrong, it can get crowded at Kingfisher; it's one of those bars where you can time it so that you can grab a table and play board games/propound a detailed critique of the awesome and/or awesomely bad films that show on the bar's TVs with friends (weekdays, until 6, 6:30ish), or revel in the company of other individuals who are not above canned wine (some may, in fact, be charmed by it and how surprisingly good it tastes) or pausing a conversation for that scene in MIB where Will Smith delivers an alien baby. This, by the way, is my favorite thing about Kingfisher: the other people there. Kingfisher, by dint of its design, menu, and all of the intangibles that goes into influencing a place's atmosphere, has found a mix that attracts the kind of people that you don't mind scooting over for at the bar. I've never come here and NOT had a fun interaction/conversation with a total stranger. If you've been in DC for a bit, you know that's a rarity (and it makes my Midwestern heart so glad to know that such places do exist). Okay, back to the other stuff. I've generally found the playlists that have been put on to be great, and suited to encourage either conversation or dancing as the evening demands. You can eat whatever you want, because Kingfisher lets you bring in outside food; I appreciate that their focus is on just making a solid bar happen instead of squeezing in a kitchen to service high-end happy hour snacks. They do have popcorn, but it doesn't have truffles shaved on top. Sriracha, parmesan, garlic powder, etc, are on hand, but you put it on YO DAMN SELF. Which means that you can mix it up however you want. Sometimes you will make mistakes. You will be forgiven, and if you ask politely, you will be given new popcorn. That's the last key piece of all this: the staff, from doorperson to barback to bartender, are phenomenal. They're friendly without feeling needlessly flattering, interesting to talk to, and good at managing the room. The bartenders give great recommendations and create some excellent cocktails. You get the sense that they would be willing to be friends with you, but there's always a layer of professionalism present -- to reference above, the bartenders will restock your popcorn for you with a smile, but if you decide to be a dick and, say, start a popcorn war with your buddies or go behind the bar to try and refill it yourself, they'll let you know (politely) that that's not okay (no one wants your hands in the popcorn machine anyway).This might seem like a strange thing to highlight, but it 1) makes me feel more comfortable knowing that they're always keeping an eye on those things--and is probably why I've seen no major issues there, since they handle things before they get out of control and 2) it makes it clear that they're not playing favorites/everyone's treated fairly. Again, the people here (working and visiting) are a huge part of what makes this place so wonderful. Kingfisher is my happy hour bar, chill Thursday night bar, work events bar, and "I've been out all night and don't have the energy to pretend to care how I look while dancing anymore" bar. I've never regretted going, and I've never brought a friend who hasn't walked out uttering some version of, "Hey, I really liked that place." High five, y'all (which, by the way, are free at Kingfisher). read more

This bar is so great, and really, it's just what the doctor ordered for 14th Street. Kingfisher's shtick is that everything they serve is in a can, except the liquor. They also have delicious free popcorn, and are not stingy about seconds! The bartenders are so friendly, and happy hour is 7 days a week until 8pm. Every time I've been in there, the bartenders are great about letting you know that it's last call for happy hour prices. The bar is in a basement and has a divey feel, but it's not gross. I love the intentionally bad movies that they play (though I've been in there when a bad movie I love is playing). read more

This was my favorite neighborhood bar and go-to recommendation to others...until now. I was floored by the male bartender's behavior. My friend ordered a round of bday shots from the female bartender and paid in cash, waiting to tip at the end of all of our rounds as we planned to stay for at least another one or two before moving to the next bar. We asked the male bartender for another round of drinks for the 6 of us and were told, "most people who order a round tip" and then walked away refusing to serve us. I've been a server, I totally get that tips are your livelihood. But how unbelievably inappropriate and presumptive. Regardless of whether someone tips with each drink piece meal or at the end or not at all, this is a business. Sell drinks. And don't cut off your nose to spite your face. read more
