It's a beautiful and intimate restaurant in west SoHo that has a neighbourhood feel. Everyone is extremely warm and friendly here and you feel welcome right away. The menu changes daily so whatever is mentioned here most likely won't be available when you go. It's a small menu inspired from southern France and northern Italy. The dishes we had were generous in portion and quite decadent. Most appetizers are in the high teens to early $20s. Entrees are in the mid to high $30s. You receive a complimentary air flaky cracker / flat bread that's drizzled with olive oil and parsley. We had the rabbit cacciatora over polenta $21. This was a very delicious and rich starter and good to share. The monkfish came on a bed of white beans $36. The fish was a generous portion and was cooked perfectly. The beef was a braised and pulled off and very tender and came with greens $34. I found this dish a tad salty side. The portion was very generous. Atmosphere is bustling and lively as you can see into the kitchen and seating like at most places are fairly close to the next table. KenScale: 8.0/10 In the world of Michelin stars, San Pellegrino World's 50 Best Restaurants rankings and other numerous barometers through which we judge a restaurant's worth, it has been pointed out how a lot of female chefs are left out from the spotlight. When looking at the Chef's Table series from Netflix, the female chefs are still outnumbered by their male peers by a significant margin. New York City is certainly no exception; although you have chefs like April Bloomfield (of the Spotted Pig fame) or Amanda Cohen (from the vegetarian Dirt Candy), you tend to hear more often about Mario Batali, Andrew Carmellini, Michael White or the Torrisi / Carbone duos. So when I heard a trio of female chefs and restaurant manager who previously worked in London decided to open a new bistro in West Village, I was very intrigued. Could King be that trend-setting establishment that can show the female chefs can make magic happen on the table just as well as their male counterparts? I had a pleasant meal on a recent visit before Thanksgiving weekend started, but felt there were some misses too. The concise, daily changing menu at King has French and Northern Italian accent to it. I was certainly wowed by the two appetizers that my girlfriend and I had tried. Thinly shaved rose veal was absolutely spot on with artichokes, capers and parsley; the seasoning was minimal and the freshness of ingredients was there. Ceci e cicoria (a pile of chickpeas) with olive oil was also quite nice, with aromatic flavor of chickpeas that my girlfriend couldn't stop raving about. After the excellent appetizers, though, there were some hits and misses. I felt that the kitchen was doing a great job with sourcing fresh ingredients and maintaining optimal level of texture throughout, but seasoning and execution became slight issues. I liked how the monkfish was roasted but the pile of broth underneath felt slightly excessive as the fish quickly became disintegrated (I could've honestly had a lot better dish without the broth). The onglet (hanger steak) was similarly expertly cooked for juicy, tender texture, and worked nicely with soft polenta and spinach but the seasoning was uneven (I frankly wished they had just ditched salt altogether). The biggest disappointment of the night was in chocolate tart with crème fraiche that the server highly recommended; as a semi-expert in everything chocolate, my girlfriend remarked how this tart compensated for lack of cacao with a bit too generous addition of sugar, and I agree that it was forgettable. King has been one of the hottest tickets in the city since its opening that created a lot of buzz, so I would definitely recommend booking as early as possible. The dining space has the intimate, trendy feel to it typical of a West Village bistro. There is full bar with French- and Italian-centric wine selections. Despite my mixed experiences, I think King is worth a visit if you want to have a satisfying dinner in the neighborhood. Perhaps my expectations were too high when I stepped into the restaurant, but I do feel like the kitchen has a lot of potential over time to fix any glitches in its execution and really blossom into a great dining destination in West Village. read more

Beautiful interior. Resonably priced (but limited) menu. Highlights: Finochietta, spinach & ricotta ravioli, octopus w/ chickpeas/bottarga, whole roast lobster, and grilled onglet w/ potatoes, prosciutto. I don't typically write reviews but I had one of the absolute worst dining experiences of my life on Saturday and felt compelled to share our experience. We had a reservation for 3 at 6:00PM. One of us arrived at 5:45PM and the other two arrive late at 6:11PM. We were immediately bombarded by the hostess telling us multiple times we have to be out by 8PM sharp. (disclaimer: this is NYC & we are very used to time limits on reservations) We had not even been sitting for 30 seconds when our waitress rudely reminded us we have to be out by 8. She proceeded to check in every other minute pressuring us for our order. After the 3rd time we explained she had not even given us enough time to read through the menu where she reminded us that she isn't trying to rush us but we really need to be out by 8 - it is not even 6:30PM at this point. I would also like to add that we sat directly next to the hostess and when the couple next to us arrived late & anyone past that was not given the same rude remarks and treatment. The food was mediocre and they removed two dishes before we were even finished. At this point it is around 7:45 and our server comes and just drops the check on the table. Doesn't ask us if you want or need anything else etc just tosses us the check. I understand and respect time limits especially on a saturday night but as a paying customer the audacity they had to treat us the way they did was unmatched. The best part was no one was waiting for our table and there were several other tables open. We left and legitimately went to another restaurant as we were not satisfied and wanted dessert. I would never step foot in this restaurant again the food was not good enough to go back & the staff was beyond rude and disrespectful. I would like to add we had one and only person that treated us with human decency and was kind, helpful, and respectful and that was Paige. I would say that it's more a 3.5 vs 4 but I couldn't give a 3 star review. My friends and I have been wanting to try this since it opened. We've always been intrigued by the menu and the restaurant itself looks so nice and inviting. We finally got a reservation and we were so excited. Sitting at the bar was probably the highlight and definitely helped this review. The wine choice by the bartender (Matt) was perfect and he recommended the gnocchi which was AMAZING -but for $70 it better be. I wish it was a never-ending plate of gnocchi. Nothing else that we ordered really stood out to us. The veal chop was tasty but didn't amaze us. From memory we didn't like the skate or the onglet. Also, I thought the acoustics inside the restaurant was pretty bad and struggled to hear our conversation. Maybe we'll give it another go. read more

My husband and I have come to love King as an absolute favorite. But with COVID winter fast approaching we couldn't be more impressed with just how warm, considered, and inviting their outdoor space has been built. As ever, their staff is thoroughly exceptional. Each day's menu is at once comfortable and supremely well executed. Think Michelin execution with an effortless low-key neighborhood feel; rather what you might hope for other known places tucked in the side streets of SoHo and West Village yet actually performed to perfection. There was so much hype for King that I may have just had my expectations too high, but overall I was pretty disappointed with my meal. I really wanted to enjoy the experience, but much of the food felt like something a reasonably talented home cook could pull together for a weeknight meal. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't anything special. Food 3/5 Unfortunately, I forgot to grab a menu when I left (it changes daily!), so here is what I remember off of the top of my head. Instead of bread, there was a very thin crispy almost cracker like thing. It was delicious, and I had to stop myself from eating all of it! A great start to the meal. Pasta with chanterelle mushrooms: Pasta itself was cooked perfectly, but the normally distinct chanterelles were pretty flavorless. Polenta with greens: I honestly can't remember much about this dish, which is unfortunately a bit of a metaphor for the meal. It was fine. Pumpkin: Spiced pumpkin, pretty straightforward. Onglet with chickpeas: The onglet was cooked perfectly and was the highlight of the meal, but the chickpeas felt disconnected from the rest of the dish. I ended up leaving them on my plate. Chocolate tart: Not sure what happened here- tart seemed to be undercooked. It had a fluffy mushy texture, similar to something that is egg white based and wasn't fully baked. We left most of it behind and it ended the dinner on a low note. Drinks 4/5 We didn't find the cocktail menu particularly enticing, so we went with a bottle of wine. Wine selection is fairly robust, with a number of affordable options. Service: 2/5 The service itself was friendly, but timing wise, everything was SLOW. It took us almost an hour from being seated to get our first appetizer. About half of that time was spent waiting to order. Understand this place is new and was very busy, but it was still frustrating. Ambiance 4/5 Restaurant wasn't too loud and the decor was clean while still cozy. Overall, it's great to see a restaurant run by female chefs, and peering into the kitchen it was obvious a lot of care was going into the cooking. I love the idea of a simple, well done European influenced menu that changes daily. But, at this price point, the food just didn't feel worth it for the quality and creativity. read more

The staff was very knowledgeable about their foods and wines and they were very considerate. Our reservation however wasn't the time we reserved for because it is a very busy place. We probably had to wait around 15 minutes after. The ambiance is great and the staff makes sure you are well looked after throughout the course of your entire meal. The food itself was good however I'm not sure if the price point is fully worth it. While it was delicious, I feel like the price makes it the type of food that you should remember for a while and I personally don't feel that way about it. If you aren't worried about price points definitely give this place a try but if price does matter to you this might just be a fancy dining experience where you treat yourself and go to just have had the experience with people you love. read more

Had dinner here with my family and was really impressed by the quality of the food, service and ambiance. The decor of the restaurant is simplistic (in the best way) and immaculate with a beautiful bar and open kitchen. Owners Annie, Clare and Jess were kind enough to answer all of our questions on the daily menu and truly made us feel like guests in their home. The malfatti, quail, scallops, fish stew, hanger steak, borlotti beans and eggplant were all fantastic and the chocolate tart was a perfect end to the meal. Cocktails and wine were delicious and a wonderful departure from the "usual suspects" that run rampant across the rest of NYC. King may have just opened but it certainly doesn't show. Every aspect of the experience was memorable. Can't wait to return to try their next menu and I plan on being a regular. Kudos to the whole King team! read more

Came here with a friend on a Saturday night after making a reservation 3 weeks in advance. We arrived right on time and were able to be seated 15 minutes later in the main dining room. After perusing the menu, we decided to split a few things: Rabbit stew (4.5 stars): I can't quite remember what this dish was called, but it was rabbit stewed in red wine and it was quite tasty. It actually came with a good amount of meat as well and was my favorite savory dish of the night. Cheese ravioli with brown butter sauce (4.5 stars): Again, I can't quite remember everything from this dish other than the fact that it was delicious. Pasta was cooked perfectly and had great flavor. Steak entree (4.5 stars): Shocker, I can't quite remember even the cut of steak that they served that night, but it was fantastic. Skate (4 stars): This was probably the least impressive dish of the night, and even so it was prepared well and was a HUGE piece of fish. Chocolate cake (4 stars): The chocolate cake was light and airy, yet chock full of flavor. Caramel semifreddo (5 stars): One of the best desserts I have eaten in the city thus far. Definitely a must order. Overall, this place serves up some outstanding food and is worth the hype. The menu changes daily, so you know everything is fresh. Though the front dining room is a bit basic looking, the main dining room in back has a nice aesthetic and great energy. The service was friendly and attentive and we both enjoyed the meal very much. We took our almost two year old and they were accommodating with the seating. We ordered and shared two starters, two salads and shared the whole fish. The food was totally outstanding. Expectations can be a horrible thing. Too much prior information creates an anticipation, as if you already know what's coming. Surprise is muted. Technology allows us to experience before we get there, often eradicating the stimulation of wonderment. I already know what I want, but it didn't deliver what I thought I wanted. This happened at King, a well reviewed restaurant on the cusp of the Village, Soho, and Tribeca. Take your pick. It's in all three. On entering, the noise was deafening, almost frightening, the opposite of what was written about King. I expected a hushed maturity. Our server turned down the thumping bass at my request. As the noise diminished through the evening, the space emerged as charming and simple, clean, white and yellow, anchoring its corner downtown location. This was long after 10:00 P.M. Service was young, charming, and well aware, almost apologetic, of the cacophony. A short, concise menu appeared, quite different than what was displayed on the internet. King was continental, not Italian. One pasta was offered. Fortunately, it was very good. Salads disappointed, hard to do, but both woman left them uneaten. Our beef dishes were very good, but not great. The same could be said of the seafood. Nothing was special nor memorable. King was surprisingly disappointing. The olive oil cake paled in comparison to the olive oil cake we devoured at Babbo the night before. King is an expensive restaurant, at least a hundred a head for an okay meal. It wasn't worth it, and I won't return. Friends made it a wonderful evening. I wished I picked a different restaurant. My expectations envisioned a different crowned King. read more

The restaurant has received high marks from critics like the NY Times. I admit, the food is finely executed and pristine. The panisse was good, but the reviews made it seem like a must-order. Maybe I just don't like chickpeas enough? The other dishes (I recall we had a pork and a fish) were good, clean, but perhaps not amazing? Smaller portions too. Very well executed food, but I might argue, not so memorable especially at those prices. Also, seating was a negotiation with the hostess. There were no patrons when we arrived on a semi-rainy day. She wanted to cram three of us in a two-top. Then she wanted us to sit without an awning and offered to move us somewhere if it started raining again (it did). We finally were able to negotiate a four-top table under an awning, but it felt like haggling with a used-car salesman with multiple requests and trips back and forth to check with her system/manager. read more

This place has such a charming Lower Manhattan vibe and the staff seemed pretty cool, but l was kind of underwhelmed with our meal and I can't quite recommend this spot. I think everyone in my group felt that it was good, but not terribly memorable. It was a family get-together from both sides of the coast so seeing each other was what we remembered and enjoyed the most. I totally respect that this is their restaurant and their choices are completely up to them, but I have always felt that the approach of changing the menu daily is usually better in theory than in practice. It's an exciting idea for both chefs and foodies, but there's something to be said for developing your signatures and driving them into the public's consciousness. But once again, it's their restaurant and I'll never insist or even recommend that they do it any way but their own. The scallops were nice so we ordered more. It's safe to say that they were everyone's favorite. I had a hanger steak, as did a few others, and it was fine. It was topped with (I think) bibb lettuce and a sauce of sorts and it filled me up, even for a small portion. Normally I don't order steak when I dine out because I cook the best steaks that I've ever had. Maybe I should have gotten something else, but I don't remember the two other entree items looking too enticing. I live in San Diego and don't make it to NYC more than once a year, but the city is a mecca of acclaimed and innovative restaurants so I'll be checking out some other spots next time I'm back and most likely not returning here. Horrible dining experience. Horrible service. 25 minutes after we were seated to actually just place our dinner order. I tried to cancel the reservation because my date had dental work and could not eat crunchy food and was assured they would be off menu food that was soft. There was no off menu food. Drinks came 15 minutes after we started eating. I ordered scallops which were quite tasty but the vegetable they came with were swimming in Grease so thick I had to spit it out of my mouth. I know we have a pandemic but we were told to put a mask on every 10 minutes. Loud music. A waiter who barely understood English. And to top it off at the end of the meal, menus ensconsed in glass crashed to the floor very loudly. Expensive greasy food and crap service. read more

After eating at King last night, to whom can I recommend this restaurant? To someone who wants a standard but not stellar culinary experience, who should expect to abide by the chef's narrow vision of cuisine and flavor, and who enjoys being castigated in front of an entire restaurant if they don't sing the cook's praises. Let's begin with the positives: the design of the restaurant was pretty and fresh; the ravioli and winter salad appetizers were fantastic; and our waitress was pleasant if somewhat ineffective. Since all entrees and most appetizers contained animal protein, the restaurant graciously accommodated my vegetarian friend by concocting a "seasonal vegetable plate." That is where the trouble began. The vegetable plate appeared to be a sad mash of lentils, arugula, and some other unidentifiable green vegetable appearing to be soggy broccoli -- the waitress, true to what we would learn was the restaurant's policy of having an answer to everything, informed us this was actually spinach soaked in water for several days. I imagine you're as confused as we were by this. Despite feeling terrible about sending a dish back, which this friend has never done, she told the waitress she couldn't keep eating it due to an overwhelming flavor of olives and not much else. The waitress offered to send another portion of the ravioli appetizer instead. Simultaneously, my other friend asked for some sort of sauce or seasoning for his steak. 10 minutes pass. Neither seasoning nor ravioli appear. My vegetarian friend sees the waitress and asks her to not send the pasta at this point and just send the check in its place: two of us were long finished eating, and my steak-eating friend was sitting looking forlornly at his now-ice cold and still sauceless steak. Not sixty seconds later, a woman who subsequently announces herself to be the "head chef and co-owner" appears bearing the pasta, places it in front of my friend, and tells her she hopes my friend enjoys this more than the vegetable plate she sent out. As she is speaking with my friend, she drops a finger bowl in front of my fellow steak eater and says "dried chili flakes for her steak." My friend looks at the bowl incredulously, asking her: I waited ten minutes for a some chili flakes while my steak got cold." Her response is to ignore him. As she walks away, she turns her head to look at him, saying "I hope you enjoying ruining the flavor of your steak." My friend asked her: "What flavor?" The head chef / co-owner turns her back on us to talk to other patrons who were apparently more in favor that were we. My snubbed friend asked the table if we can get the check and leave quickly, since he'd never experienced such treatment in a restaurant and could not sit there any longer. As we're waiting and discussing how rude her behavior was, another woman who appeared to be a a senior position in the front of house turns to us and says: "Maybe you should try not talking about her when she's standing right there. There's no need to be such DICK." You would think it ends there. As we were trying to sign then bill and escape from this den of harassment as speedily as possible since all the staff are staring at us, the bartender takes it upon himself to insert his voice. He begins with an apology to the table but quickly pivots, telling us that we shouldn't take it personally. The irony of being told this after the cook's behavior was richer than the flavor of most of the food. He continued to explain that they were a small, tightly-knit team, like family, and they they tended to jump to have each other's backs and stick up for each other. Such is a justification of unacceptable treatment beneath the veil of an insincere apology. So if you're looking for a place where you can have your meal with a side of childish, insulting behavior flavored by a kitchen staff who has a higher opinion of their own abilities than they do of the customers they are supposedly servicing in this "neighborhood" restaurant then please, I urge you to make haste to book a table at King. read more

Their menu is very very small and limited, also changes frequently so can't go by the dishes listed online or on their website... so if you are someone with any dietary restrictions, watch out! The team here is friendly and whatever we ordered was great in terms of flavors and preparation (fava crostini, salami side, tortellini, and the skate but small portions). However, did not have the best experience with our server. He saw us typing our review and felt the need to tell us that "we should wait till later to make our comments". Totally inappropriate! That said, on conveying this to the manager, he made sure that this was checked upon and also served us free dessert. Not the best experience but will not call it my worst. read more

Horrible! Would not wish this dinner on anyone. When we got there, the heat was blasting on us, which was not only way too hot, but was also drying my contacts out. We asked the waiter if he could have it turned down and he looked nervous and said he would check. A woman came to us and explained that it's not possible. So, uncomfortable atmosphere = strike 1. The waiter recommended the pumpkin soup. Check the picture of it out - literally a giant bowl of lumpy, tasteless pumpkin and oil. Inedible. We told the waiter we didn't like it and he said "why not?" Because this isn't a soup at all, it's baby food. Strike 2. Next came the fish. All of the dishes look so unappetizing - no attention to color or texture. The fish is white with a white sauce and white potatoes. Truly mystifying how a chef would look at this plate and think he did a good job. Strike 3 you're out. No one came out to tell us they were sorry we hated their food and their hot box of a restaurant; no one seemed to care about their customers' experience. The waiter brought us our check and the $18 "soup" was still on it. We had to ask him to go back and take it off. Just bad and classless every which way. read more

Granted that this restaurant made it to NYC's top 10 for 2017, you'd think it deserves 5stars? Well, the menu is a bit limited, steak is not a meat of choice for most people neither is pork. Luckily there was sea bass for the rest of us and it was cooked PERFECTLY! Kudos to their chef!!! The other 2 items, broccoli rabe with grilled polenta and fennel salad were alright. The staff is extraordinarily kind, gentle and very patient. Service is very attentive ...superb. Above all, a lovely experience. The lacking star was cause the noise level was so high that we had to shout above the din to be heard! I was there treating my son to dinner upon my arrival from SF and had no energy to out shout the large group there, before us. read more

We were so excited to try King but overall disappointed. Started off so positive with their help to extend reservation from 5 to 8 and waive a minimum $ requirement as 50% of our party were non drinking age diners. The seating booked was the cabin, so uncomfortable in the cold temps -the heaters don't provide much heat at all and they are out of blankets so we had to grab them as other tables left. Willing to work through the cold we ordered cocktails, wine and starters...all great and brought to us quickly. What went wrong was our entree food order took over 1.5hrs to arrive and by this time every other table who were seated after us had already come and gone. We were very frustrated by this point, opted to just pay bill for what we'd drank/ate and not wait any longer for entrees abs go somewhere else. The food we did have was great but the discomfort in seating space and extremely long wait for entrees (over 1.5 hrs) makes it a tough one to recommend. read more

Lovely, intimate neighborhood spot with solid food and a bright, rustic ambiance. Not worth going out of your way for but a solid SoHo choice nonetheless, albeit a tad overpriced. Since the menu changes regularly, I won't bother commenting on specific dishes. As a general matter, the appetizers were far more enticing and inventive than the mains, which were on the plainer, ordinary side. Just got home from dinner at King and I have to say it was fantastic. They had some solid wine selections by the glass and the waiter was well prepared to help my wife and I choose a wine to pair with our meal. The menu changes every day, so I'm not sure if it matters what I tell you I had, but here goes. I had the pork shoulder and my wife had the fresh ricotta ravioli with pesto. Both were awesome! I kind of like that the menu changes so often because I can keep coming back to try new and creative dishes that it seems King is able to kick out on a consistent basis. I liked how the place was busy, but still able to turn over tables fast enough to accommodate walk ins. Not sure how that works in the winter without the outdoor seating, but impressive nonetheless. I went to King for the Sunday lunch which is done the first Sunday of every month. It comes with four courses and they were all great. Started with a farinata (chickpea pancake), fresh pasta with pesto, bass baked in salt and finished with a torta genovese with strawberries. The wine pairings were also excellent that went along with it. The lunch is 75 but the wine pairings are extra but definitely worth the up charge. Not a place to visit on a budget though hahaha. read more

From the time we walked in we knew it would be special! The staff couldn't be more helpful from the minute you walked in 'til you left. The menu offered seasonal and fresh ingredients with the meals perfectly prepared using fresh herbs and magic. My new favorite restaurant in manhattan! The food is so fresh and beautifully seasoned. The menu changes frequently, which I knew ahead of time and appreciate. The choices on the menu (attached) were few, which I didn't anticipate, but the outstanding quality of the dishes more than makes up for the somewhat limited selection. I've now met all three of the ladies running the show, plus another female assistant chef. It's so empowering and refreshing to see these young women succeed in such a bold endeavor. This is a three star spot. Based on reviews, I had expected mediocre service with great food. Fine by me! Service was lovely but food was sloppy and quickly prepared and plated. So disappointing. I had a mackerel starter. The almonds or pine nuts (whatever) were crunchy and raw. The sauce as promised on the hangar steak was absent. The chocolate cake was dry. Overpriced, mediocre food that made me and my friend sick. I had to send my grilled fish back to the kitchen because it was soaked in salt. The kitchen's next attempt was burnt on 1 side. Not sure what made us sick but I've had intestinal discomfort for 3 days now with spurts of diarrhea. Place seems in disarray because the menu which is printed daily doesn't accurately describe dishes. Romano beans showed up as garbanzo beans, and lentils showed up as rice. read more
